Open Thread – Moose Twins Update
I saw some rustling in the trees this afternoon, and caught a few fleeting glimpses of reddish brown, and an occasional set of ears in the area behind the garden where Brenda the moose had her twins, but they didn’t come out in the open until late this evening. At about 10:45, I noticed something dark pass by the sliding glass door and sure enough, mama and the babies had come out to explore.
The first thing I noticed was how much steadier they seemed on their feet after just 36 hours. They are still trying to master those tall gangly legs, but they are well on their way. The kids had a great time playing with the toys in the yard, and even checked out the swingset for quite a while. One of them really seemed to take an interest in the toys, and also tried to frolic, which was quite amusing because the legs seemed to have a mind of their own and he almost wiped out on a couple of occasions. Then when he started to nose the big red inflatable buoy, I knew who he reminded me of. Brian. Although Brian is a full grown bull now, he has so far not outgrown his youthful enthusiasm and often plays around with the stuff in the yard, and engages in spontaneous frolic on the lawn.
The other sibling seems a bit more tentative and definitely hungrier. He would wander a little too far and then let out a noise which I can only describe as part meow, part squeaky toy and part baby alligator. It was almost painfully cute. And right on cue, mom was there. She walked about half the distance to the baby and made her own version of the noise; a soft breathy “Eh. Eh.” and the baby trotted over and began nursing. There were lots of licks and nuzzles all around.
I was sitting in the thresshold of the door the whole time with my feet outside on the step, and the camera was clicking almost nonstop. The light was very low, and I knew that most of the shots would probably be a bit blurry. But I snapped over 300 images in that half hour, figuring that at least a few would be good. I’m glad I did.
None of the family seemed the least bit interested in me, and mom led the babies right past me at one point, less than 10 feet away.
Then the little Brian-like one bent over and began eating grass in the “downward facing moose” yoga pose, and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this little guy took after dad.
After about half an hour, and a complete tour around the yard, they returned home to their little spot behind the garden and disappeared behind the grass and bushes. I was left sitting half way in and half way out of my house feeling absolutely thrilled. Brenda had made eye contact with me a couple times, but never with any fear or hostility. It was more like an, “Oh, it’s you.” And, when she walked right past me so close, it was almost as if she was showing off her new family.
I am resisting naming the little ones. As much as I don’t want to think about it, statistics tell us that it’s very possible at least one of these guys won’t make it to his first birthday. (I say “he”, although we won’t know for a while what gender they are) There are bears in the area, and all creatures must do what they need to do to survive; many at the expense of others. But for right now, these little guys (or gals) are having great fun exploring this new world that is full of green grass, and swingsets, and rose bushes, and yellow trucks, and soft places to sleep and warm milk. And some creature that keeps taking pictures.
Here’s to wishing that Andree, etc., will finally file a Writ of Mandamus in an effort to force the personnel board to actually investigate an ethics complaint. Seems to me that the investigators are taking political instead of substantive considerations/actions in dismissing each and every one of these complaints. Put the matter before a judge in the appropriate jurisdiction and get an evidentiary hearing on the appropriateness and legality of dismissing all those complaints en masse.
From my view, some portions of all of the complaints could be dismissed due to interpretation. But there is substance in nearly every single ethics complaint which requires an investigation of the facts. To dismiss all of these complaints in their entirety without further consideration or competent explanation represents an abuse of quasi-judicial power and is legally dangerous.
And unlawful.
Someone with standing needs to file a writ with the appropriate court and force the issue into an evidentiary hearing. The board needs to be kicked in the arse and there is no better way of compelling it to fulfill its statutory obligations than to present it with a Writ of Mandamus.
What an adorable sight! The most exotic animal I’ve seen here in GA is a oppossum stuck up a tree. He was frozen with fear so there wasn’t much to see.
LOVE the pictures!
AKM isn’t the only one with twin moose babies – but Brenda looks a whole lot healthier than this poor moose mommy

@ Honesty in Gov. Sorry to say I didnt. I got names in the White Pages.Com that were identical to mu daughter-in-law’s but they were older ladies who did not know her. Plus I found out that I was not spelling the city right. It’s Beaufort, South Carolina not Buford, South Carolina. So, I am still searching. Thank you for your concern.

Well… best of luck in your search. When we were tracking/looking for the HS graduates we had no idea what City. We left it blank and just let the search field/filter empty. You get a larger search of names initially on the page…. but it would list everybodys age…. so it was no problem.
Never used anywho.com which nswfm recommended but it is worth a shot. Hang in there… you will find her.
@nswfm: Thanks for the information. I will try that and let you know if I have any luck. Fingers are crossed.

What’s NUCCA? Muscle testing? How did you get off thyroid hormone?( just asking ‘cuz I take them) what do you take instead?
And the kitty kids are closer to grandma and grandpaw, plus all kinds of sunny patches to follow around every day.
C aka C, a lot of medical issues went away when I moved back to CA. Found a great NUCCA chiropractor, got off thyroid hormones, stopped the colds/sinus infections. Also stopped the constant travel which was the exposure to the germ mobiles of the whole air travel. Life is pretty good near the water. Plus, my kitty kids have a lot more room to run around like 12 YO kittens.
Califpat, try anywho.com to find people. Good luck!
Skin thread is back up.

Can I ask a stupid question about meth?
I used to get sinus infections a lot when living in NYC and would often use psudafed(sp) alone or with Advil or Tylenol for the sinus headache. Luckily, I’ve not had to buy this stuff since 2003, but now you need to register your first kid to get these pills.
How do the people who make meth get enough to make it, and a normal sick person is treated like a criminal?
~~~~~~~~~~~
there used to be “recipes” about how to make meth. I think they use all kind of stuff, but this pseudophrine was a important part.
I used to get sinus problems and sudafed made me sleepy, so I used to take chlor-Pheniramine for allergy, I used to be a vet tech and we used that for the dogs allergy.
I hardly every use that anymore, but for sinus problems/cold/allergy I would recommend the “neti pot” Uses salt water to wash and irrigate the sinuses. You can buy them pretty much anywhere now. 🙂
I guess Cali agrees with you?
I just can’t describe my emotions at your moose-family pictures. Thank you SO MUCH for them, and for the love you radiate about them and towards them. Such a profoundly important commodity it is. Just a few wild creatures on the planet trying to survive in such a basically hostile world, for them. But SOMEONE cares about them…
I have never seen a moose, LET ALONE MOOSELETS!! The lump I got in my throat at your first picture of them has only grown larger at these update pictures. Such precious, beautiful, wonderful little miracles I have never seen before.
Many question have come to me since I saw your first picture. I wonder if in due time, you might share some more info…
1. What, if you know, is the mortality situation of TWINS for moose (apart from the predator threat, etc)? In mean, is there truly enough for two, and does a mother favor one and neglect one, etc?
2. Wondered if one seems significantly stronger than the other (more so than one just maybe being a female)?
3. About how far is their nest from your actual house (that glass door you speak of) and how far is it away from your garden… just trying to assess, I guess, how safe these particular moose parents feel around you. It SOUNDS LIKE Brian at least, feels pretty darn familiar towards you! In fact, you say you have had so many families born right there, really shows you that moose do communicate with each other and they know that is a safe place. Just wondering how close the whole operation is to actual PEOPLE and people houses.
4. Better thee than me… I would be desperately fighting off very strong maternal instincts right about now, trying NOT to talk to the family and NOT, NOT to feed them anything (in winter I probably would cave in). And just generally I would be having one heck of a time to keep myself from turning into their grandmother, their fairy godmother, their all-you-can-eat-buffet maintainer and Lord knows what else. And I know perfectly well, all that is NOT helping them survive in the long run and building too much trust of humans is definitely putting them at risk…
I don’t know how you handle it because you can’t fool me, you are fighting the same urges on some level. Are you having a beastly battle with these types of things?
5. Wondering how “dog” feels about this situation? Is he a risk to the babies? Ha, probably not when he’s looking down the broad nose of Brenda… but he must be interested. What does he say about it?
I’m just a dyed-in-the-wool animal lover and really interested in how they live their lives… I guess I prefer them to the human kind on many levels. I guess it’s just easier to understand why they do what they do, than it is with humans.
Thanks for any info.
Isabella–it’s the job of the Lt. Gov. to swear in legislators, so no surprize there…
Okay, my husband made me laugh really hard when he said last night that he heard that Brenda was actually in Eagle River when she went into labor but decided to make the trip back to your yard in South Anchorage (I think that’s where you are, Potter perhaps?) to give birth as she did not want her twins to be Eagle River babies!
He called it Brenda’s “wild gallop” and I know we don’t discuss those issues here but it still made me giggle.
That’s quite cute..DH saying that… 🙂
Still waiting to see the new mooses around here. Mom usually has twins each year and we’ve had two years running that they have survived to adulthood. We have seen last years’ babies up and down the woods along the cul-de-sac looking “lost” as mom as kicked them out in anticipation of the new ones but have yet to see her or the new babies.
Thanks for the photos! They were spectacular!
Way to capture nature at it’s best! I LOVE these pics of the babies and mom. We get deer, racoons and an occasional bear. We have a bald eagle that nests in a tree behind us, but I have never seen anything like these pics. Thanks for sharing what must be an awesome and precious experience.
Thank you AKM! These pictures, like many of your posts, have brightened my day.
And another – this time mocking the proposal by Sec’y Chu to mandate white roofs and lighter colored asphalt to combat global warming.
Palin: In the meantime, read this: Energy Secretary Chu wants to REGULATE roof, road color to slow global warming… http://tinyurl.com/q5ad59
Perhaps someone should explain to Palin why white roof coatings are such a huge seller here in the Southwest where they are not mandated as they are in CA. We already know that our cities are “heat islands” due to their solar gain, and we know that countering the solar gain of individual buildings is largely done by burning carbon fuels. Once again, Palin’s scientific ignorance has her swatting fruit flies and talking teabaggerish nonsense about energy issues.
How come Palin, didn’t swear him in?
It’s a short article, I tried to use as little as possible, in the spirit of “fair use” (AP has been snarky about copying in the past) but that’s the spiffiest bits.
I don’t know if this has been posted and I missed it: New York Magazine’s preview of “GQ’s upcoming funny, sympathetic story on Levi Johnston”
I just posted an “Update”, but it seems to have vanished. I will wait to repost in case it shows up, but another ethics complaint against the Governor was dismissed.
AKM……. (Just a suggestion.)
Those who are not logged into the Forum may not know the most up-to-date info that Hope has posted and her route or time schedule.
She has found another truck to accompany her… a mini-convoy.
Would it be possible to put a little map here on the main thread with little flags or push-pins at locations she has scheduled for stops…?
Those reading the main thread might know of some neighbors or friends
(non-Mudpuppies) that they could suggest reading the blog or just tell them in the next two days. If they knew the stop was right by their front door… they might help out as well.
And we sure hope that as she makes her way past Anchorage…. that Your Camera will capture the moment as well. I’m sure Brenda won’t mind if you take the camera of her for awhile.
She’s not like GINO who has to be the focus of the camera ALL the time.
**UPDATE**
Investigator advises dismissing Palin complaint
Andree McLeod asserted that Palin violated the Executive Branch Ethics Act in two ways.
The Anchorage woman, who has filed numerous ethics complaints against the governor, points to a press release from the governor’s office announcing that John McCain had selected her to be his vice presidential running mate. The other involved Palin’s participation at a National Republic Congressional Committee dinner.
Those are great pictures, and the baby moose are so comically gangly! Makes me wonder how it must feel to give birth to babies with such loooonng legs and big heads….and two at once. Ouch!
Thank you AKM for such sweet pics. My daughter will LOVE these!
It is just dark here in Ireland at 10.15pm. There will be what we call a stretch in the evening….so our hours of daylight will also get better. We might make it to 10.30 or 10.45 in June. But we have no meese!!!
I can appreciate how hard it was to get those photos with that light level….Sometimes it takes 300 shots to get 20 good ones.
@ crystalwolfe
You crack me up! You oughta be a PI yourself, you tricky keep-an-eye-on-everything-Palin girl! What would we do without you?
Oh, my! Marvelous pictures…thank you! Just tooooooo adorable.
I’ve been thinking about this iceberg thing as I’ve been trying to wait patiently. If Levi gives too much up now, he won’t get his book deal which I imagine would be very important to him personally and, of course, financially. I’m not sure what to think. Well, I must read the links…maybe I’ll know more then.
GINO sure likes to travel around and sign bills sitting outside. Is this normal? I don’t know if other govs do this. or is this just a way to spend the states dime travelling her around to sign bills and have a photo op doing it. Did she have a personal outting in Fairbanks to make her want to travel up there and have the state pay for it? Why couldn’t she just sign them in her office at her desk without the camera? Just wondering?
If you go to the photos on the ak website, it shows her signing bills in Wrangell and God knows where else. Just curious, why all of the travel? LMAO, why didn’t she take her picture of vetoing the energy stimulus bill and post it on the ak website?
Dang , I love that Nora O’Donnell !!
Not to worry, Dr. Patois. I still enjoyed reading the piece.
TBNT and UKLady, sorry, I went to that Huffpost story from Syrin’s blog and paid no attention to the date. My bad, but nice to see someone was paying attention last December!
Who bought the big red shiney new truck Levi was driving ??
Thanks for the picks AKM. We have only deer here, and I am glad. Our island is not big enough for moose.
The little moose are cute. I find the big ones to be a bit intimidateing in real life. They are much to big for me.
@West Coast Annie
Methinks Levi is definately looking for a modelling job!
“Todd Palin Offered to Buy Daughter Bristol a Car If She’d Dump Levi Johnston”
I just love the pic of the kids by the swingset! Priceless.
Thanks AKM.
I was just organizing pictures and took another look at the moose pics – it appears Brenda may have some serious battle scars high on her left side. To have scars that far off the ground, maybe Brenda has had an unpleasant meet-up with a bear? If so, what a story she could tell!
Those twins are sweeter than sweet! Thank you so much for delighting us all AKM! If you do name them, Brodie is a Gaelic name meaning muddy place. Sharon is Hebrew for flat land at the foot of Mt Carmel or fertile plain. If 2 boys, Smedley means flat meadow.
FYI Brian is Gaelic for noble, strong and virtuous and Brenda is Norse for sword. Hopefully, that will come in handy for Brenda when defending her babies.
Also too, what we already knew…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/casey-ganemccalla/top-5-corrupt-politicians_b_150224.html
I think our President is getting ready to fly over my humble abode….
Thank you AK for this beautiful treat. You take some great pictures! Brenda is one smart moose for picking your garden as the place to introduce her babies to the world.
As a drama teacher, I can’t resist the names Romeo and Juliet for the little ones, but we will rewrite the script so they live forever and have little ones named Sasha and Malia, ” a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”
love reading about them…they are so cute
They are just precious. Thank you so much.
I’m so glad Brian and Brenda are trusting of you enough to share their family. And I’m hoping it’s geographic trust only, so they don’t get trustful in a place not so safe for them.
And I pray the twins beat the odds and get their names on their one year birthdays.
With Les Garas post on the other thread about the Energy money and the other AK website (We’re not that Stupid) promoting a bumper sticker for Sarah maybe a new pin (or bumper sticker ) is in order.
Something simple and easy to yell at anti- Palin rallies.
Although, this being Brian, maybe he will stick around and help. He does seem much more social than most bull moose (party animal that he is and all!)
To add to InJuneau’s response:
And if Brenda was chasing Brian down the driveway just before giving birth, and if Brenda has taken over the backyard, it might actually be a while before the next Brian sighting. He has been informed that he is not welcome.
Remind us of anyone we know?
Don’t know much about moose, but I’m pretty sure dads don’t stick around to help. They can be rather aggressive toward the young, so it’s prob. just as well…
A question for those in the know about Stars’ comment about Brian coming home..?
Do the Brian’s of the Moose World have a role in staying around and protecting the ‘ little ones’..? Does he stay around and are they seen together. Some animal species will let the Mother do all the work raising the young and other animals the father chips in.(gathering food etc….not applicable here )
LOL, fancy picking out a fellow Mudflatter. Have you noticed in the ADN comments lately, the anti SP posts are always most recommended and the pro SP post have 4 recommends. I suspect Peelanders are fighting a losing battle there.
______________
Well to explain first, I used to be “EyeOnYou” over there, but when they started that delete everything phase, all but a couple of my posts were deleted (everything I wrote on Palin topics were gone, but everything else was left) and when I wrote and questioned that, they stated that they did not have the wherewithal to go back and point out what I had done wrong (nothing as I was careful to be respectful and follow the rules) but since I still has comments viewable that I was not banned. I simply deleted that account and started a new one (keeping copies of everything I write now for proof of bias in case I should need it, not that it matters much).
Anyhow, a few comments that were before mine are now gone and they were ones calling Palin a moron and such, but no swear words, or comments that were off topic, just pointing out the idiocy of the Governor and her “hiring freeze”, so it is curious to try and figure out exactly who decides on what is acceptable and what isn’t.
I notice, like you that the majority of the “peelanders” and other fans have more or less given up the invasion tactics that used to happen constantly, but there are a couple of peelanders that still post over there.
Which one? The federal dollars thread?
I clicked over to Palin’s twitter account last night. Thought it was interesting that Palin is following John McCain and JMcC is NOT following Palin.
Eric Cantor, Gov. Richardson and Newt Gingrich are also not following Palin. Huckabee is a follower. The other politicians were following thousands and I didn’t attempt to see if Palin was in their sights. I do think Palin deserves some credit for (apparently, following the lead of JMcC, Cantor & Newt) limiting the people she’s following.
In regard to all of this discussion of Sarah’s clothing, white jacket, open toed shoes, short skirt– isn’t there anything decent to wear in any of those black garbage bags?
I love getting a peak at the playful new babes. I get the giggles imagining what it would be like to live in such a place where a moose would give birth in my yard and where it would still be light at 10:45pm.
I wonder why SP didn’t accessorize the miniskirt with the strappy red sandals from the May 25 Fairbanks Memorial Day (#86 Polly). (Is it possible it wasn’t a miniskirt and just a “not for sitting’ skirt? Michelle Obama wore one of those for an tv interview awhile back.)
How disrespectful can she be? I mean, I know it’s Memorial Day and you can wear white now, but I have a book for her: “What NOT to Wear”. Looking at her outfit: none of it goes together. Second of all: each individual piece was inappropriate for the event. The least she could do is show a little respect to the men and women, and their families, who have sacrificed their lives for us. UGH, she just makes me angry.
But on a happier note: Thanks AKM for the lovely pictures! We had a “Brenda” who lived near us in Eagle River. She had twins each year we lived there. Most years they (sadly) became bear food, but one winter I saw a “teenager” moose with Momma. They hung out in our yard and the neighbors yard for the whole afternoon. I took tons of pics and I’m glad I did. Must find them. one spring she bedded down in my neighbors yard while in labor for 45 minutes. Poor dear – the babies weren’t in a hurry. She headed off down the road, and two days later we saw her with the twins for that year in the woods behind our fence. They are always adorable, but momma is going to be very protective.
peepeeland… a very on-the-mark description of those folks. what a bunch of whiners. I saw what they wrote about Linda K-B…
“To summarise, they feel that Kellen Biegel’s behaviour is obsessive, that she is attempting to stifle the current administration in Alaska, that she is looking for information to hurt Governor Palin, that she is searching for dirt, that her initial blanket request for email records was an abuse of the system, that her complaints and requests take government employees away from their regular duties, that costs should not be borne by the tax payer, that Kellen Biegel’s actions are not an exercise in informing the public, that Kellen Biegel is not transparent about what she is looking for, that what Kellen Biegel is now engaged in is a “fishing expedition” – though some have called it a witch-hunt.”
Guess we can put the peelanders into the category of “don’t like the 1st amendment when anyone but us utilize it legally.” As for process… the peelanders wouldn’t know what a process is unless it’s the cheese they wash down with their whine.
Just worked out a reason for the governor having difficulty in deciding whether to attend an event or not.
On the Alaskan Government website at http://www.gov.state.ak.us/gov_eventinvite.php there is a form to fill in to invite the governor to an event and the key question might be “Is the First Family invited?:”
[Of course the answer to a following question “What specifically is requested of the Governor?: ” might trip up people with more honesty than diplomacy….]
They have this statement “It says it’s written by a Melvin Martin, but we’re suspicious. Read with caution:”… and mention ‘checking the facts ‘ but the reader has not been told which facts were wrong. They sort of let them assume that ‘SOME’ of the story is true. ..which would be wrong.
Very interesting and creative. A certain bunch of ‘cons’ readers could go nutz with this though. They are not allowed/supposed to think on their own. They are told what to think.
Ah Ha! So that why GINO was having Piper SELL Lemonade a few weeks ago…. 8)
Of course! It must have been a fundraiser for the poor scurvy-infested villagers in the Mat-Su Valley…
Amusing, and an equal opportunity satirist, obviously. Mudflats and its readership get a whole two paragraphs.
Thanks for posting these great photos.
We (the various species) are all in this together.
Alaska Report has removed the “iceberg” warning, that was headed Palin’s way. Guess maybe it melted.
Just skimmed the disaster request…..the same sentence that refers to 30 percent living below the poverty line also says (paraphrasing because I can’t cut and paste for some reason) ‘Sufficiency is a necessity….
isn’t there some movement to get rid of the ‘sufficiency’ rights for Natives? This quote might be useful in that context as well.
Exact quotes to the Fed Government….works for me.
Finished reading “bloggers on the bus” I liked it but they didn’t spend nearly enough time with all the Alaskan Bloggers..
And for all the peepee’rs if they read it they will for sure find out, WE ARE NOT BEING PAID BY OBAMA!
Triva, from the book, Gino used to read Phil’s site all the time! Wonder if she still does? And the Freepers, all they really have is their faux noise, and talk radio, as far as blogging they bat a ZERO!
And their recycled sayings…PDS for example is recycled CDS! How original! It seems all in all they are pretty lame…they are pretty much bloggers to nowhere, lol!
Thanks redwoodmuse. I love the poster idea and the good advice.
AKM, the pics of the “kids” are just precious! I do believe the “Moose” to be your totem animal b/c you have so many magical experiences with them… 🙂
The personnel board is meeting today and public comments are being taken!
There are pics on the SOA website with Gino in her red ho shoes…@ a Memorial day ceremony don’t know if its the same one Shannyn went to…?
But she simply, totally lacks a shred of “class”!
redwoodmuse
that 30% quote came directly from SP’s own request to the feds for disaster assistance!
Yet, when the fuel crisis was in full swing, the claim was that most folks made too much money to qualify for assistance. Amazing how the story can change, ain’t it!
I’m going to remember that “quote them exactly” – thanks for passing it on.
Nan
late for work again
#@ 5 UKLady – thanks for the link to Shannyn’s post. She says it all in one sentence: “She just looked cheap.”
How the heck did haraS get this far without a clue as to appropriate attire for business meetings and memorial services?
@#40 Nan – right on as usual. I particularly liked this part “THAT, dearies, is the definition of insanity. Or chutzpah. Or both.” Personally, I think “both.”
@ #44 London Bridges – Fabulously funny! I remember when my older sister got sent home because her hemline was more than three inches off the floor while kneeling.
Loved the moose (mistyped ‘mood’- LOL that too) pictures. Great to see first on my email routine this morning. Besides the usual ‘awwwwww’ all I could think of was the mooselets seem about equal parts elbows, knees and noses – still so very cute.
About Scarah and her mini skirts and f….me shoes, maybe she’s been paying attention to Mudflats and has realized no one understands her word salad – so she’s using her clothing and shoes to distract – this way, folks don’t listen, they either look on in lust…..or horror.
@problem child and @nan – if I understand correctly, despite her veto there might still be some wiggle from for the energy funds part of the stimulus package…I hope so.
In any case, the two paragraphs (can’t seem to get my cut/paste for quotes working) re: high cost of fuel in W AK and folks choosing between fuel and food, and the reference (thanks nan) to 30 percent of the folks living below the poverty line need to be pulled out, slapped on a poster, with her ‘no’ on there.
Long time ago one of my journalism instructors, a tough lady and one of the first women journalists reporting from Vietnam told the class that the best way to hang someone is to ‘quote them exactly’. I’ve never forgotten that. I pass this tip on to all you AK folks in a gesture of solidarity and friendship.
now off to read Shannyn on Huffpo.
and then I’ve got to get the second issue of our newspaper to bed today…
What a contrast to ponder this morning! On one hand, the innocence and charm of new life finding its way in the world. Stark contrast to that bare leg picture of the Governor of Alaska and a description of her diva behavior. The dress is not appropriate consider the serious ocassion– and how she does love those open toe shoes, too, also.
i’ve just been slumming a bit and made my first (and last) visit to cons4palin.
they certainly are obsessed with AKmuckraker, aren’t they?
i was disappointed not to find a pic of palin in her mini honorin’ the troops.
oh well.
those baby meeses sure are cute!
Thanks for the great pics AKM. And I just think its amazing how Brenda trust you with the twins. I just love how cute those little guys or gals, are. And Brenda knows where the safest spots to stay in are, right in your backyard, and that may just be enough for the little ones to make it. As for GINO,is anyone of us really surprised by this nitwit any more? To be dressed like that at a ceremony such as this is a total disgrace. The woman has no decency in her what so ever. No one can ever say Sarah Palin is very reliable when it comes to public occasions. Dressed like that, i’m sure she doesn’t know what the term strict etiquette behavior means.
It’s gray and yucky here in VA and frolicking mooselet pics are a definite pick-me-up. Thanks AKM!
Awwww. Thanks AKM for the baby pics and the write-up. I even showed them to my guy as he was getting ready for work and got a big smile out of him, too. He really liked the ones where they were playing with the toys in the yard.
Delightful baby pictures AKM. Taken between 10:30 and 11 PM- this is a great reminder of your long summer days, and you are still nearly a month from Solstice!
Awww…so wonderful! What beautiful moosies 🙂 Definitely Brian’s offspring: playing with swingsets and toys must be genetic. Thanks for sharing-
Good thing Sarah didn’t wear that getup to school. Otherwise, her parents would have received a call from the principal’s office to come and take her home, covered in a draw-string trash bag!
cute lil buggers!
Brian, get a DNA test done to make sure they are yours!
😉
a.k.m.. great pictures of brenda and the babies. yes, i believe she brought them out to introduce them to you. she knows you are a friend because brian told her so….b
Thank you for the pictures. I keep coming back to look at them.
“Western Alaska communities have the highest average heating fuel ($7/gallon) and gasoline prices ($6.75/gallon). Most rely on limited seasonal employment … Residents were choosing between food and fuel even before the floods and several communities affected by the floods had requested state economic disaster declarations.”
_________________________
She can stand there with her bare face hangin’ out (not counting makeup) and say they have the highest prices and choosing between food and fuel and STILL try to justify turning down the energy stimulus funds?
THAT, dearies, is the definition of insanity. Or chutzpah. Or both.
Also (too), in the request for FEMA, she states that 30% of the residents are below the poverty level… Although during the winter, we kept reading about how the residents there made too much money to qualify for financial assistance during the food vs fuel crisis.
ARGGHHH!!!
UN-freaking-believable!
And Nicolas Tucker speaks, yet again (and takes pictures, this time):
http://community.adn.com/adn/node/141356
“Emmonak is still under water. Water has receded some, but may take days due to amount of water coming down from upriver. Our river is clear of ice in the front and, perhaps, along the way to the bay. Don’t know about the main Yukon and the mouths to the south of us, about 20 miles. Two major ones were still intact as of yesterday. It appears the worst is over.”
Wow!
Doh! Only had 1 coffee, so I need to correct my description of earlier post. I used “precariously” – I meant to say “vicariously”.
Those baby moose are adorable.
On to the outrage — ADN has the letter to President Obama requesting federal disaster aid: http://media.adn.com/smedia/2009/05/26/18/Federal_Request-alaska_gov_20090525_153251.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf
Note the hypocricy in the following from page 3:
“Western Alaska communities have the highest average heating fuel ($7/gallon) and gasoline prices ($6.75/gallon). Most rely on limited seasonal employment … Residents were choosing between food and fuel even before the floods and several communities affected by the floods had requested state economic disaster declarations.”
Writing Raven has more @ Alaska Real.
Thank you for sharing this. What a magical experience.
What fun!!
Specially amazing to see such pictures when I am already cooking in my own juices in the desert…..
OMG, they are so cute it makes me want to move to Alaska!
Fantastic photos. Thank you for sharing. Hope Brian is back home again after being out drinking moosejuice with his mates – no doubt a little tired and emotional?
I don’t know, the guys do the celebrating and us girls just do the work. Same thing happened here Brenda (empathic hug).
What a wonderful way to end my day with these brilliant images – can’t stop smiling.
Terrific photos — if the blogging in your jammies thing doesn’t work out, you should definitely consider a career in photography. I always love your nature photos, especially the tiny/macro ones.
After looking at these photos, how could anyone even consider hunting these beautiful creatures?
Big announcement in North Dakota today — the Rep. governor’s office has invited Scarah to speak at their big oil & gas conference next year. Now, I love the governor of my home state but, what are they thinking? Especially after reading about this latest can’t-get-my-schedule-straight-gate. If she show, I envision the red leather jacket, a super-short and super-tight mini-skirt and those red stiletto heels. She’ll have all those oil guys panting after her… YUCK!
I think Gov. is trying to live precariously through her daughter Bristol, hoping the Candies Foundation might give her a modeling job. Really inappropriate dressing for this most highly-respected event. I think she’s unraveling.
And, on a good note, the mooselets are as cute as can be. It’s true that we get attached to them – and worry about their safety. Hope they get lots of nurturing and stay away from hunters or poachers.
Thank you for the lovely photos! Indeed a wonderful way to start the day! I have horses and have had our share of babies, and it looks like they borrowed those legs as they have no idea what to do with them!
Mini-skirt = LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!!! I am the MOST IMPORTANT AND SEXIEST PERSON IN THE ROOM!!
Just read Shannyn’s article in Huffpo, and saw the picture. What a downer after reading about Brenda and her babes. Animals in the wild have more class than Gino!
WTF Gino is way out of fashion. A 44yr OLD women in a mini skirt. Gino has NO class.
Disgusting ! !
AKM, if moose mommies are half as tough as they say, that was quite a compliment Brenda paid you. 🙂
Great pics! I hope Brenda stays around for more appearances with her little ones as they grow – they’re so adorable!
Just adorable! Thank you for sharing some of your 300 (!) shots. You got some really good ones. I agree with SillyWabbit, the babies deserve names whether they survive the year or not. Also, it’s common for children to name animals before the gender is known, so you end up with “Queenie” being a male and “Homer” being a female. C’est la vie. It’s kind of cute.
What a great way to start my day. So adorable. Thanks AKM.
AKM,
Thanks for the delightful pictures and description of Brenda and her babes. Reading that was a very refreshing, enjoyable way to start my day.
A doe and her, now maybe 5-6 month old, fawn have very occasionally started coming into my area (They were never here before, but houses have been built all over around here. The animals are showing up much more in what little open space is left.) I, also, enjoyed watching them check out the front yard and browse from the trees down by the creek in front. A few days later, I found out that they had also enjoyed, to the very last morsel including the root, the Artichoke plant that used to exist in my garden in the back.
Everyone is a sucker for baby pictures, including me. Those are great! Thanks for sharing.
I don’t think it would be bad to name them, even if one doesn’t make it, they are still worthy of names. Just please, no Palin names! That NOONE deserves 😉
And she’s done it again: “Despite several months of notice, the governor didn’t commit to be at the ceremony until the morning of the event-hence her conspicuous absence in the program. Before the program went to the printers, the governor had been given a deadline. Silence. … Governor Palin insisted she be sat on stage and demanded time for a speech. She spoke before the invocation and flag presentation as to not be “off program.” It was certainly appropriate for the governor to speak at such a high level ceremony, but her high level maintenance made it difficult for those that planned”
I’d be furious if I were the event planners. And does Miss Sarah not realize how RUDE that kind of behaviour is? Does she not think for one moment how unprofessional it makes her look? How unreliable? This antic has now become the one that I let get my goat (or moose) about her.
Babygate, shmabygate … how about “can’t-get-my-schedule-straighty-gate”?
UK Lady – Touche !! We better be careful , or ‘pups from around the world will start posting places for sarah…….
This morning while we waited for the school bus, I showed the baby moose pictures to 2 grandchildren – a girl in kindergarten and a boy in 3rd grade- and they just loved them! Their favorites were the swing-set and toy truck shots:)
Thanks for the baby pictures. Now we’re all surrogate aunts and uncles for the newbies. They are so cute and I hope they’ll survive to grow up. I was fortunate enough to see young moose twins in Maine several summers ago. They were all gangly legs and so funny and adorable. People got out of their cars and were lined up on both sides of the highway just silently watching them and smiling. Finally the twins untangled themselves from their legs and disappeared into the woods. Sometimes life gives you these memorable moments of magic. Go Brenda!
SP was wearing a mini skirt becaus she was jealous of these baby moose—they are all legs, and she didn’t want too be forgotten.
Lol, also, too, somewhere for Scarah to go on her holidays so she could fit in.
Amazing pics. You are so lucky!
Just saw the huff po pic of Palin…..what was she thinking wearing a mini skirt to an event like that?
How wonderful. During my “earth mother” stage, I had goats. To see them walking around and trying to leap in the first hours of life, was quite a joy.
Life can be amazing.
UK Lady – Thanks for the link. Once again , Shannyn nails it. sarah is a clueless , disrespectful , flakey dumb-ass who dresses like a street walkin’ hooker on a day to honor our countries heroes and fallen. She belongs here :
Ohhh, the babies are beautiful, the pictures are fantastic and many thanks to Brenda and to you, AKM for sharing it all with us.
Here’s hoping for the best for both little ones. They’re terriific.
Wow, these are wonderful pictures, AKM!! I want to have some baby moose in my back yard, too! Wait, I don’t really have a backyard. Anyway, these two are supersweet. Thanks a lot for giving us such lovely first-hand accounts about Alaska’s amazing wildlife.
How fortunate you are!!!!!
Thanks for sharing. Great job!
Yay!! Baby pictures!
I am tentative, too, about getting attached to them so early. There’s a reason there are twins… increases the odds of one surviving. Perhaps they will thrive off your good juju and do just fine.
Be careful out there. Mama meese can be dangerous, as you well know.
they really are cute, though. 🙂
Oh, thank you so much for these. What a great thing this was for me to wake up to. Congratulations, Brenda, my nominee for Mom of the Year!
Cute x 2 !! Does it get any better than this ?!?! I fully realize the laws of nature , but I hope they both make it. Put “Buf” out there to chase away the “bad” guys…………
LOVE the pictures! What a truly awesome experience for you! WOW> I get excited when the little fledglings start bouncing around. . .I couldn’t imagine the thrill of baby moose (meese?) in the yard!
So very adorable! Thank your for sharing them with us. I’m wondering how large your property is for Brenda to feel so comfortable birthing in your backyard. I love the pictures of the babies with the little kid toys.
