“Refudiating” Palin’s Racist Tweet
It feels strange weighing in on a house of worship thousands of miles away, well, at least for me. A proposed mosque two blocks from Ground Zero has Palin tweeting on a Sunday afternoon.
According to Politico:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s City Hall hit back at Palin, first tweeting “@SarahPalinUSA mind your business.”
The aide, policy hand Andrea Batista Schlesinger, followed that up with:
“@SarahPalinUSA whose hearts? Racist hearts?”
Bloomberg has defended the plan for the mosque, arguing that blocking it would impinge on religious freedom
This is a local issue for New Yorkers. I’m weighing in on Sarah Palin. She’s local for Alaskans.
9/11 for NYC, was a day many Alaskans couldn’t fathom. I’d never been there. My father didn’t know about the terrorist attack for weeks because he was on the Koyukuk River hunting moose. Another hunter was informed after a military escort surrounded his small aircraft on his return to town. Last year I visited New York City and wept when I realized how terrifying it must have been. I had no context until I stood in the canyons of buildings.

The “stab through the heart” of 9/11 was felt by many, including Muslims. This article tells of some victims that day:
Imagine being the family of Salman Hamdani. The 23-year-old New York City police cadet was a part-time ambulance driver, incoming medical student, and devout Muslim. When he disappeared on September 11, law enforcement officials came to his family, seeking him for questioning in relation to the terrorist attacks. They allegedly believed he was somehow involved. His whereabouts were undetermined for over six months, until his remains were finally identified. He was found near the North Tower, with his EMT medical bag beside him, presumably doing everything he could to help those in need. His family could finally rest, knowing that he died the hero they always knew him to be.
Imagine being Baraheen Ashrafi, nine months pregnant with her second child. Her husband, Mohammad Chowdhury, was a waiter at Windows of the World restaurant, on the top floors of Tower One. The morning of September 11, they prayed salaat-l-fajr (the pre-dawn prayer) together, and he went off to work. She never saw him again. Their son, Farqad, was born 48 hours after the attacks — one of the first 9/11 orphans to be born.

Maybe Sarah Palin’s soon to be released, little book of “Clever Sayings That Rock!” will include George Santayana’s “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. Almost 110,000 Japanese Americans were interned in 26 different camps after the Pearl Harbor attacks. 33,000 Japanese Americans served in the US Military during the same time.

This is great! I couldn’t agree more. All of this incite, disgust, knowledge of the constitution, humor, etc,etc I think exposes a real problem we have here in America. There is a substantial minority of people in this country that actually like this media whore. And prove it by giving her lots of money. She wouldn’t exist without them. They are the snarling dogs that love every bit of red meat she throws at them. They love to hate. They have been around for a long time. The Nazis whipped them up to hate the Jews. Joe McCarthy whipped them up to hate the commies and pinkos, John Birch got them hating everybody that wasn’t like him. Go back in history, there’s always been a group that wanted to listen to some one who spewed hatred. The problem we have is that we cant let them rule this country. By law they have the right to vote. So it’s up to us to make sure they never win.

After you read what the developer (who wants to build the community center in NY) did on 9/11 and how he was personally affected by the heinousness of the crime that took the lives of too many on that day, take a look at the contribution Sarah Palin made to the city of NY (can’t find any–gee that’s a surprise! I have lived in the NY Metro area all of my life. On 9/11, I could see the destruction from the hill at the top of my street — a street called Grandview. The issue of the Mosque/Islamic Cultural Center two blocks from the WTC site is a very difficult one for most people in this area. Just about every issue related to the WTC site and/or 9/11 is difficult for us. There is a wound here that will never heal.
I doubt that any of you realize that there were many Muslims in the NY metro area dancing in the streets celebrating on 9/11. I live 30 minutes from NYC, and two towns away from me there is a large Muslim population. I saw the news footage of their impromptu celebration, before it was abruptly cut off for fear of an outbreak of widespread violence. That night, a Hispanic man whose pregnant wife had just died in the WTC collapse, murdered two of the Muslim revelers. A friend of mine knew the man and his wife from church.
While Palin’s twit tweet was stupid and inappropriate (as per usual), I beg the rest of you to refrain from judging or automatically labelling as racist the people in MY area who are uncomfortable with the proximity of that Islamic Cultural Center to the World Trade Center site. Why? Why there? I think that for many if not most of us, it comes from a place of great pain, not hatred.

If I remember correctly, the footage was then passed off/aired by the media to the information-hungry public as something it was NOT; it was aired *as if* it was footage taken in NYC/the US. There was so much confusion; nothing was making any sense; the media was grabbing at any bits and pieces they could to try to get a handle on it. As a result, they aired that particular footage *without* making clear to the public the location of its shooting, and its images have remained in the memory of many AS IF those images were legit to the happenings of the day *in* the US. Since it’s been proven/authenticated/certified (by the originating source) that the footage of the “impromptu celebrations”/celebrators were *not* celebrating –impromptu or otherwise– in NYC, its environs, and/or even in the US, any ensuing stories about “a Hispanic man whose pregnant wife had just died in the WTC collapse, murdered two of the Muslim revelers” is necessarily obligated to collapse in the rubbish heap due to its being based on an incident (the “impromptu celebrations”) that never happened!
Therefore, whether related by “a friend” who “knew the man and his wife from church” or not, the “Hispanic man” story is wildly apocryphal, a total fabrication, utter bunk. And, strange tho’ it might be, the relating/telling of it *really* gets my blood a’boiling.

Actually, Beth, I was not referring to the CNN footage of the Palestinians in Jerusalem. I was referring to footage I saw taken in downtown Paterson, New Jersey. It is two towns away from me, and you may want to give me a tiny speck of credit for being able to recognize it’s downtown streets and being able to rather easily differentiate them from the streets of Jerusalem. I have actually spoken to some people in Paterson’s Muslim community, and they admitted that there were people who celebrated openly on 9/11. New Jersey is one of the most diverse places on the planet, and I believe also the most densely populated state in the U.S. I live on a small dead-end street of 10 houses, and everyone on my street has a different ethnic background: Dutch, Greek, Irish, Italian, Egyptian, Algerian, African, Spanish and Israeli. Lots of variation in skin colors, cultures and religions, and we all seem to genuinely appreciate each other’s differences to the extent that we even feel them. For the most part, I think we’re so used to the diversity that we simply see each other as neighbors, as people. The vast majority of Muslims in New Jersey are probably good, peaceful people. Some, however, are not, as evidenced by the the links of some of the 9/11 terrorists (and other radical Islamic terrorists, including those responsible for the 1993 attack on the WTC and those planning the attack on Fort Dix) to New Jersey.
As to the murder that my friend from Paterson told me about: Since her church went to the trouble of fundraising for the man’s legal defense, I’m going to assume that the story is probably true. If you don’t, then you don’t. I would strongly recommend, however, that you visit downtown Paterson sometime and talk to the people there who were actually there on 9/11. You may find it even more persuasive than snopes and youtube COMBINED.
It’s sad when people feel entitled to judge the legitimacy and “gravitas” of other people’s feelings about a traumatic event. Would it have pissed you off a little less if I had shared with you that I spent 9/11 waiting to find out if my brother was still alive, and not if, but HOW MANY people I knew died in the WTC?
I personally don’t like going to Ground Zero, because I find it too painful, but some people in this area find it a comforting place to grieve, where they feel more of a connection to someone they lost than they do at a grave that contains either no remains at all or nothing more than a smattering of human tissue scraped off of a girder. And I can certainly understand why they might prefer to do so out of the virtual shadow of an Islamic Cultural Center. I certainly would not want to see a German Cultural Center built in close proximity to a Holocaust Memorial. The terrorists don’t represent all Muslims any more than the Nazis represented all Germans, but in both cases, something dangerous and malevolent grew out of the larger group — not exclusively, of course, but undeniably the malignancy could not exist without its host.

I, too, am a NYC resident, in the East Village (which is lower Manhattan). I disliked the WTC even when it was under construction, because those high glass towers changed the weather around them, and not in a good way. I avoided them for years. However, I never wanted them to go down in flames, and take so many human lives with them. We lived with the stench from their burning for months.
There is no reason why, in diverse New York, a mosque should be denied two blocks from the WTC site. Manhattan, which is New York County, is quite diverse (though Queens has the distinction of being the most ethnically diverse county on the planet). We have people from all over, of every faith, and plenty with none. My neighborhood is quite small (we have very few buildings over six stories), yet there’s an Islamic center/mosque about six minutes’ walk from my apartment. (There are churches of several denominations and synagogues nearby, too.) Right now, there’s nowhere in the Financial District for Muslims to gather for prayer. Some of them attend Friday prayer in the mosque near my home. More of them go to Queens or Brooklyn. I see a mosque near the WTC site as an opportunity for healing. I think it should be built, although I acknowledge that many feel differently.

This one finally got me riled enough to post something. I was born in Alaska, grew up in Palmer and graduated from Palmer in 1981, so am something of a contemporary of Palin’s. I moved to New York City and lived there for many years. I was working there during the first WTC bombing and experienced the horror of that, which was minor compared to what my friends and family experienced in 2001.
New York City has dealt with racial and religious diversity so much better than the valley (Mat-Su) has, and Palin needs to mind her own flippin’ redneck business. I am tired of her superiority, her ignorance and manifest stupidity.

I have thought a couple of times to write to my Pastor a sincere and honest letter re. Palin and how he is wasting his time defending her. But here is the thing (brace yourselves) – I’ve been brought up to not criticise the Pastor in such a open & direct way. I’ve thought about it a lot and I know I wouldn’t just write him a letter attacking him personally or his ministry but yet, something holds me back. I feel like a coward for not speaking up which doesn’t help.
Thing is, I really respect what he is doing and of course the thought has occurred to me that becasuse I respect my pastor, I SHOULD speak up.
Being a woman doesn’t help either. I have to tread a fine line between being submissive to the senior Pastor’s leading and telling the truth with love. It’s definitely been perplexing me for weeks. But perhaps now that I’ve forgiven him as I should and as the Lord would want, maybe the next step is to think on how I might contribute in a positive way.
Here’s the thing: I have a strong feeling that it isn’t really my pastor that has the Palin conviction, that it’s the pastor’s wife. You know why I say that? Because just before he announced his ringing endorsement of Palin he had this to say:
“I’m not saying whether she should or should not be President. (Nice little nip in the bud about it not being political but I wasn’t biting) But she has been attacked constantly by the “My Way machine”. My wife read a book all about it.”
Cue stunned WTF silence from me and spouse (who wanted to yell out – Which book?! Going Rogue?!?)
So yeah – see what I mean? I think it goes much deeper than just admiration for a fellow so called Christian. The pastor’s wife is probably a Palinbot. Probably?….I’m being kind. I would say “definitely” because right after the endorsement – a photo of Pastor’s Wife + Palin flashes onto the projector – I just about freaking died from sheer shock. Never in my life of going to church have I ever seen this happen. I called home to Australia to tell the news to my parents and my sister who are also Christians and they were just as stunned at the blatant politicisation of the American Church.
Delicate situation, to say the least.
My vote: write the letter to both of them. When people don’t speak up forcefully, you end up with pre-9/11 documents that leaders ignore, a war in Iraq when there were no WMDs, and Grifter Gov $P.

I appreciated his sermon about people who do insist on rebelling against God’s authority in their lives – I’m a christian, I believe in submitting to God’s rule for my life. But it was supremely ironic that he would use Palin as an example of someone being “persecuted”.
Palin is not being persecuted – she’s being held accountable for all the lies she tells and all her wrong-doing as governor. BIG BIG difference to being persecuted for doing the right thing.
A quick question: If you write something, send it, and then you erase it from the original location of its writing, is that the same as it never having been written at all?
The reason I ask is, in checking the SarahPalinUSA Twitter page/website (I don’t Twitter, myself), there’s, gosh darn it, NO evidence of the twit Tweeting: “Peaceful Muslims; pls refudiate”. To be sure, the follow-up/back-peddling nonsense-Tweets are still there, but not that one.
Is she trying to refudiate her abject ignorance by taking it down? What’s she trying to do?
Is she under the impression that if it isn’t among the listings of Tweets she’s made, that it’s been permanently erased from the collective archive of our nation’s memory –and, equally, magically forgotten by all who’ve seen it? Does she also believe a woman with “carnal knowlege” of a specific man (resulting in the child that woman is holding in her arms) is a virgin because that woman is no longer with that particular man? Makes just as much sense.

I’m a native New Yorker and am raising my family here. I read every profile of every victim of 9/11 and there were immigrants from 89 nations among the dead. I remember the Muslim family that lost both their grown children who worked at Windows on the World and their mother’s wrenching hope that they were with each other when they died. I still cry over the loss these fellow New Yorkers suffered. The proposed mosque/community center is 2 blocks from Ground Zero and if you know this area it may as well be 2 miles for all the impact and/or sightlines it will offer to what is ultimately built there. New York City is the defacto capital of the world and it is only proper that we welcome the world’s diversity. This is America’s strength and the hope we offer for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If we become less American over these attacks then the terrorists win. I’m sorry your half-term former governor feels qualified to comment but this is seriously none of her business. She should crack a dictionary and look to her own house. We have a mayor and representatives who are doing the job we elected them to do which is far more than anyone can say for Mrs. Palin.

I hate Christians.
No not really. But so many I have interacted with were over the top crazy and did weird things that make no sense no matter what sort of god you have. I know that out there among the sane good doers of the world MANY are Christians. But in my personal life most of the people who have ever caused me grief (stolen, engaged in unethical business, lied and not the small stuff) were all Christians. I can’t get past that. Two employees I fired while managing a science store (selling telescopes, dino bones and meteorite bits) that I remember most. One was fired for stealing, I found a huge stash in his locker, he had claimed that he was a devout Christians, going to service 3 days a week. Another was a 7th day Adventist, this one was fired for lying and trying to steal commissions from other peoples sales. Another broader instance; I was the best man at a Catholic wedding. The groom had known the priest for 15 years. The priest was asking me about what church I went to and when I said I did not go to church he literally turned his back on me and walked off.
Even the Christians I am friends with always follow their own version of Christianity that has nothing to do with what is in that double book set. It’s so confusing.
Yet I hold out hope that most Christians are good people trying to do good works, I just don’t see much evidence of it.

It is NOT possible to determine a person’s Faith (or lack, thereof) just by looking at them, yet that is exactly what the rhetoric from the likes of $P would have people do — look at someone and judge them ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
The real kicker in this line of thinking, though, is that since it *isn’t* possible to tell, just by looking at someone, what their religion is (a person can *choose* to follow any religion their little heart desires…or follow none at all), you *have* to fall back to the next ‘clue’ in line…their skin color. Ergo: skin color, an unchangeable fact, ultimately becomes the default by which ‘evil’ is revealed, judged, and known by those who ‘think’ about *others* as $P does. Her tweets are never about improving something. These newest ones are her interfering on a sensitive subject that doesn’t concern her one bit. The funniest thing about her word creation is that neither of the original words is a good choice either. I know most of you all know the meanings, as this blog’s target audience is the reasonably well-informed, but just to make the point:
Her “corrected” version used the word “refute” incorrectly. It means to prove false with evidence or argument, so she is asking peaceful Muslims to cite evidence to disprove the existence of a mosque that has not yet been built?
“Repudiate” might be technically correct, but it’s a very strong word; really, she’s asking peaceful people to reject, condemn, or disown the building of a house of worship (for their own religion) and multicultural community center?
I can’t believe she tried comparing herself to Shakespeare. Like he created words out of ignorance instead of actual thoughtful creativity. I doubt she has even ever read any of his work….she strikes me as the type to read Clif’s Notes, if at all.
A friend of mine who is conservative posted a link about the mosque on her facebook page a few months ago when the story was on Fox News website. I generally leave politics out of my conversations but had to weigh in this time. We had a discussion offline and her main points were that it’s just too sensitive. As if Muslim Americans were just cackling to themselves on 9/11. As if Muslim Americans don’t love this country as much as the next American and as if Muslim Americans didn’t die in those 2 towers. As if all Muslims by default are either jihadists or worse.
We agreed to disagree and I am sure she is following this latest development closely. Seeing as our pastor all but endorsed Palin from the pulpit, calling her a faithful Christian who loves God (PUKE) – I am also sure my friend thinks Palin is a hero now. It just never freaking ends does it? Everything it black and white, for us or against us, all Muslims are bad or have the capacity to be bad, all Christians are good and never ever lie.
Then in the same breath we sing Amazing Grace, that saved a WRETCH like me and blithely proclaim ourselves as sinner who are SAVED, nothing more. Sinners. Well, except you happen to be a Muslim, in which you are Satan’s spawn, capable of genocide and have no redemption value.
Her other points were that Christians shouldn’t allow interfaith tolerance. Because “tolerating” other faiths meant we contribute to their “acceptance” and since all other faiths outside of the Christian one is satanic, ipso facto, we are supporting satanic faiths.
I reminded her that religious freedoms extends to ALL in this country and that it is an individual choice whether someone accepts Jesus as Saviour by FAITH or not. Just because Christians get rid of all other religions in the land, it does not mean everyone will become Christians BY DEFAULT cuz there are….no other choices. By FAITH alone which implies a individual choice to accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ – does that have no meaning anymore?

You know, this friend of mine is dear to me and in all other respects, she is a lovely person but when you hear fearmongering on a regular basis, it gets into your system, you know? Same for my pastor – not even he is immune to the constant lies. I just want to ask them to please please do some research, do some reading and broaden their understanding of the world and not be afraid to LOOK and SEE and make up their own minds, without Fox News.
I think in the end, the best thing I can do is continue to pray for my pastor that he will one day see he made a big mistake about Palin and hopefully be able to admit that to the congregation. I asked God this weekend to help me forgive him because I was really angry about it for a while. But anger doesn’t solve anything. Prayer is the best way to deal with this kind of blindness. I also pray for my friend – her heart is in the right place but when you have grown up with the same ideology, same people, same small town, it’s often hard to adjust. It baffles me a little though because she is in the Armed Forces and have been to places like Saudi Arabia which makes me wonder – haven’t you seen for yourself that not all Muslims are jihadists? And that not all Palestinians support Hamas and Hezbollah?
Are my friends born of the Spirit? I would say most that profess to be Christians are. But there are definitely a few who display too many Palin-like traits…..just enough for me to wonder. But I don’t know for sure, it’s not for me to judge so I pray for them also.
It occurs to me that Fox & Friends, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh plus so many other conservative media really are doing the Devil’s work because they lie all day every day about everything. It’s astonishing. To the point that authentic honest God-loving Christians are deceived. It also occurs to me that perhaps this is what the good book was warning about, in part, when it spoke of false teachers & false prophets. I hope that my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ will start to exercise some discernment instead of believing everything a person says, just because they first say “I am a Christian.”

When our prayers *have* to be augmented by our actions? I know I’ve found that to be the case time after time after time; possibly this would also be such a case. Yup, I’m pretty sure it would be.

While we [almost] all here can agree on Palin…
as a site with concern for democratic values, and women’s rights, one would be wise to thoughtfully read Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s latest book: NOMAD, and then see if one can, with a straight face and good conscience, defend any mosque in the West, and particularly near the Jihadist triumph of ‘9-11’.
I think we do more harm when we paint people with a broad brush.

I have compassion for the families. However, I also believe that it is time for healing and a greater level of understanding. We can’t make it convenient to harbor resentment or fear. And we can only become stronger and find some sense of peace when we open our hearts. Fear grows out of the inability to understand each other. To seek many books of many point of views may challenge thoughts but may close the divide.
As a person *very* concerned with “democratic values, and women’s rights” -among many *other* issues I feel vitally important– I would suggest using Ms Ali’s ‘take’/’instructions’ on how to view (and act towards) *other* religions, particularily Islam, makes as much sense as taking ANY one person’s ‘take’/’instructions’ as the definitive conclusion on the issue.
The ideas she espouses (that people *should* judge entire religions as ‘good’ or ‘bad’) are *not* ideas I will adopt/make. To me, personally, she represents all I cringe over re: the ‘conservative mind’ — she would insist a religion of many many millions be judged by the actions of a small, small few. Should I also judge the competence, intelligence, and honor of ALL Alaskans by the actions and deeds of the likes of Palin, Ted Stevens, and Mayor Sullivan? That, I believe, is what she would have me (and others) do — make sweeping and pejorative judgements of an *entirety,* based on the actions and deeds of a few. I will *not* do that.
So yes, “with a straight face” and with a clear conscience, I *do* defend ALL places set aside for worship and thoughtful contemplation in this nation; particularily one encorporated into a long-established center devoted to providing recreation and services to my fellow citizens.

Perfect. If Scary had any sense of shame or embarrassment, she’d be feeling it as she reads those words.
If Sarah is a christian, she should please wake up. God does answer prayer. And the prayer of the nation’s african-americans’ and white american’s (true christians) prayers were answered in the election of our new President, I sincerely believe it. After the horrific historical slavery trade and blight on US history, many of their prayers and tears were kept in a bottle in heaven, and God heard their cry, and he chose to have a black President to serve them. When President Obama was elected, I personally felt that the U.S. finally broke through it’s prejudices and proved they could put their trust in all elected officials, regardless of color. It was an emotional time.
Sarah did not win. Maybe, just my opinion, she was chosen to lose, so that media could finally wake up and see the nasty underbelly of some, not all, but of some, republican operatives, their true hearts, otherwise, if McCain had won, we might not be exposed to all this ugly almost “racist” underlay.
I’m just talking about the spiritual theme here. Christians are supposed to respectfully regard the laws and believe that all things are done for a purpose, God’s purpose. I have never heard Sarah Palin utter one word of compassion for the people who died on September 11, along with their families, friends, and all of the people who miss them. I don’t believe I have ever heard Sarah utter compassion for the people who have suffered destruction in Haiti, on the Gulf, in homeless shelters, in emergency rooms, anywhere. For a woman who wears her religion on her sleeve, the only pictures that I have seen of Sarah visiting church was (1) after an arson fire and (2) to have a witch doctor lay hands on Sarah in some funny business of hocus pocus.
I have never heard Sarah talk about being stabbed in the heart before. (That is a very strong religious message of how Mary felt when she learned of Christ’s crucifixion. Mary is pictured with seven swords plunged into her bleeding heart. Is that your point of reference, Sarah?)
When Sarah imagined insults about her youngest child thanks to the Family Guy’s TV program, it was Bristol who “wrote” the face book post instead of the “wounded” Sarah. When Sarah and John lost the 2008 election, I would have imagined that a greater loss, a bigger wound than the thought of a mosque in New York City. I didn’t hear about the American voters stabbing her in the heart then, either. If we want to go all democracy on the rest of the world then we had better get our poop in a group on our own soil. We had better try to live by the standards that our country was built on. We had better start coming together in peace and justice and stop tearing each other apart in the name of one person’s ideas being better or more right than another’s.
The ability to understand that this was an American tragedy that affected all of us and then the ability to accept that those who are responsible are individuals and not an entire group of people who happen to share the same religion.
For Pete’s sake, would this all be going on if the people who flew those planes had declared themselves to be WASPs??? Doing it in the name of Jesus? And don’t kid yourself, worse things have been done the world over in the name of Jesus. Sad to say.

I’m a native NY’er, and I bop around and revisit these political websites every so often, I’m glad I swung back around to mudflats, it’s such a great site. Anyway, I just want to let you know that I completely agree with you. There are other fellow NYer’s who are very upset about the idea of the Mosque being built, but I’m glad that Bloomberg and I agree on this issue. Folks are letting their emotions just completely drive every decision they make.
Could you imagine, in the history books, what a middle-finger this would be to the islamic extremists who were behind this atrocity, if our city had a Mosque near the WTC? Have the lessons of King, Ghandi, and the rest just not penetrated our collective thick skulls? It is really a shame.

Thank you for this post. I have spent the last minutes enjoying the snarky humor that is burning up the web, but I have a sick sinking feeling about what was said in her initial tweets. I listened to the open meeting on CNN web last week regarding the mosque and New Yorkers were given mic time to express their feelings. I cannot describe how terribly depressing it was to listen to my fellow Americans stereotyping with such anger. And this ignorant woman fans the flames. She is the worst kind of idiot – an angry, spiteful, mean one.
Sadly, why would be surprised at stereotyping after the new immigration law in AZ? The ignorance is infectious.
Did she actually or honestly type that? For those that think this woman is brillant, she sure does some pretty asinine things.
I fear we are taking a step back in history and still not learning from what we all went through…what dark ages we could be heading for if people like her are listened to.
I live in NYC today and used to live about two blocks from the WTC complex. To write that this mosque isn’t registering as a concern to most NYC residents is an understatement. Most of the people who showed up at that “open” televised meeting don’t live in NYC, or even the immediate suburbs of NYC.
Certainly there is a group of 9/11 families who are deeply offended at anything occurring in lower Manhattan. There’s a group who want the WTC complex to remain undeveloped as a permanent scar, sorry, memorial.
But the rest of us: we want to move on. We have our moments, especially in the first weeks of September. Come around a corner in the city just the right way and you can still be shocked at the hole in the skyline, even 8,9 years later.
Moving on doesn’t mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean conceding defeat. It means accepting the event as part of our lives and getting on with living as best we can.
More often than not, the people who raise the bloody shirt of 9/11 lost no one, live nowhere near NYC, and likely despises those of us who did and do.

Can you imagine what Britain would look like if they had never rebuilt after the Blitz of WWII? It is appropriate to remember, to mourn, and to take reasonable measures to prevent any further such tragedies, but to stop living is to give our enemies a victory they do not deserve.
Palin would not be pleased if the people of NYC all decided to weigh in on uniquely Alaskan issues. In fact, Alaskans are often particularly unappreciative of Outside opinions and influence on local issues, and the AIP, of which Todd was a member, is evidence of that. The location of a mosque in NYC is none of her business, and her choice to paint all members of a particular faith with the same brush is racist and disgusting, and indicative of her lack of knowledge and extremely narrow world view. I so appreciate her giving us yet one more reason why she should never be allowed near the White House.

I was born a third generation Long Islander and have many wonderful memories of spending time in NYC. I was living here in western NY on 9/11 and watched in horror as the towers fell. The son and soon-to-be-daughter-in-law of a close friend of mine were in the second plane to hit the WTC. I know several police officers and EMTs who were involved in the response. I grieved as I looked as pictures I had taken of some British friends during a visit to the towers. Each time I pass the skyline on the way to LI, I feel an emptiness inside that echoes the empty place where the towers had stood.
The terrorists who committed this horrific crime wanted to bring this country to its knees. They wanted to show the world how evil we Americans are. To move on with our lives and to rebuild is the best way to show them that we cannot be broken. The best way to honor those who died, and to diminish the terrorists’ act, is to become a better, stronger and more compassionate nation. We must never forget, but we must also not allow the past to haunt and paralyze us. We must NEVER allow hate to guide us…or we become like them.
Although the events of 9/11 affected all Americans and people around the world, a celebrity politician in Alaska has no business using this controversy as a means to gain publicity for herself. She cares nothing for the people who died, for their families and communities, or for the NYers who face Ground Zero, and the memories of those we lost, every day.
To use this as an opportunity to gain some media attention is simply despicable.

Mudfarmer, Lilybart and Bubbles, my mother was at a conference near the White House the day of the attacks. She was an honored guest as an Alaskan Elder at a humanities forum. I had to tell her what was going on – hearing the sirens in her background as she wasn’t aware of the goings on with her jetlag.
It was a day of uncertainty and though we were not affected the way New Yorkers were, we can only imagine the terror and the sense of loss and violation. It wasn’t just white Christian businessmen lost that day – as any reader of any and all newspapers could ascertain, the WTC was made up of all colors and faith.
My family and I went to New York shortly after to support the city. We were treated so nicely, every local was hospitable, strong and magnanimous. It is hard to imagine that only hate could mark the event. We felt a lot of love in that great community.
Sarah has done us a favor, illustrating how much she would chose not to represent the rights of all Americans under her Administration. We’ll keep this over head Sarah, and it is only one example of why you can’t lead.

Sarah Palin is a total embarrassment to Alaska, and our whole country since many other countries pay attention to our national politics. She has nothing positive or constructive to offer, EVER!
