Putting the goober in gubernatorial -

Friday, January 28, 2022

Aaaaaaaaaaa!

Zounds! That’s not who you think it is. The movie based on the political best-seller Game Change is coming to HBO, and actress Julianne Moore will have the .. um.. honor of playing our favorite ex-half-governor.  Yes, we only have one ex-half-governor which is why she is, by default, our favorite.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Moore has “nailed” the Palin look, complete with glasses, updo, and a patriotic flag pin. But conoisseurs of Palin accessory trivia will note that it is in actuality a blue star pin. Palin wore the pin religiously throughout the campaign, signifying that she had a child in the military. The pin vanished as suddenly and silently as Track vanished from the military.

My only critique of Ms. Moore’s caricature of the caricature that is Sarah Palin is the “point.” I would respectfully direct the actress’ attention to Sarah Palin’s preferred method of indicating something in her physical space – the scary knuckle.

The scary knuckle is not only used as a pointing tool, but also (as above) to make rapid-fire noogie-like motions for emphasis. I simply bring this up because it’s those small details that can really make or break a production.

Production of the movie begins this very day, with Ed Harris playing John McCain and Woody Harrelson as McCain adviser Steve Schmidt.

So, what’s the real Sarah up to today?  Latest is she’s challenging President Obama to produce his academic papers from college and his “um.. uhh… Harvard Law Review papers.”  I presume if she decides to declare a 2012 presidential candidacy, we’ll be treated to her own academic treatises like “Why I think being a sportscaster would be really cool” and “Asians – Why are there so many?” After all, she’s got five whole colleges worth of stuff to share.

“Game Change” covers both parties in the 2008 election. Since I haven’t heard of who is playing Obama, does this mean that just the Republican side will be a part of this TV series?

The book is 436 pages long, anhd SP doesn’t appear until page 359.

    • mike from iowa says:

Let’s get to the real important issues of the day. Poor little old me, as in Mike from Iowa, was not chosen as one of the most beautiful royals ever. I can’t begin to tell you how much that hurts. My feelings would be crushed if I had any. Birthers don’t care about Obama’s birth certificate. It is and always has been how the Potus’ skin color clashes with flowing white robes and pointy hats.

      • Dagian says:

I bet if you asked nicely, a whole herd of kindergarten children would make glittery paper crowns and twinkly scepters for you to choose from.

That’s gotta be better than some big old media splash, right?

Hmm, what would your title be?

        • ks sunflower says:

Well, maybe Mike can find a fitting title by going to:

          http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/royals/index.html

You put in your first and last name (be careful of using your real name if you don’t want us all to know, Mike) and your city and the site produces a “Royal Wedding name” complete with title.

It’s just a fun, silly thing. My daughter and I may be half a continent apart, but we are planning to make some recycle some odds and ends (and produce bags) to produce little fascinators (the hats Kate Middleton wears), bake some scones, and converse on Skype whilst we watch online streaming of the royal wedding late tonight into tomorrow morning.

It’s just a fun bonding thing to do. We’re not obsessed with the Royal Family but we are both historians (me as an amateur and her as a professional). Cheers to you, Mike. Let us know how Mike from Iowa translates into royalty. Dagian’s suggestion of paper crowns and sceptors might be more appropriate than you know.

Oh, and be sure to check the gender choice, because our daughter put her father’s name in and it came out as Queen such-and-such of so-and-so. 🙂

          • ks sunflower says:

er — . . .planning to recycle . . . not “planning to make some recycle” Okay – no more editing on the fly for me.

          • mike from iowa says:

Could I be dumb enuf to use my real name? Is there no end to the non-sense? Will the rill royals tie the knot right? Do I rilly look like a young Robert redford? Tune in tomorrow to find out.

Ah, not so fast I’m afraid. I saw one of the so-called “Heads” of the tea party on one of the afternoon shows (they all run together) saying that now, with the birth certificate, the real work of verifying whether the President meets the constitutional requirements of being a citizen could begin. The “Head” said that the President’s father conveyed his Kenyan citizenship on the President at birth. Really?

I wonder, are these not the same people who were up in arms about the “anchor” babies and “terror” babies being born in the US of non-citizens so that their children could have US citizenship? Hmmm. Guess that doesn’t apply to the President.

And, Orly Taitz is headed to court again with some nonsense about Obama commiting Social Security fraud.

      Head spinning.

      • mike from iowa says:

Tea Party Nation is saying that Obama’s long form birth certificate could be a forgery,so they aren’t leting this go.

    I can’t imagine:
    1) Julianne Moore
    2) Ed Harris
    3) Woody Harrelson

… participating in this unless they knew what they were getting into. These guys usually portray fairly socially-significant characters — meaning that they seem to have some sort of social conscience. They don’t accept a role without knowing what they’re doing.

I have no idea what their politics are. But their movies, at least to me, seem to be at least an attempt to make a social/political statement.

Just can’t imagine that this would be good for our ex-gov. But it kinda pains me that she’s still getting all this media attention she should have lost a long time ago.

Rumor on the screenwriting front is that the Alaska scenes will be shot in a mock-up Yup’ik village on the Yukon, actually filmed in New Zealand, with Palin bringing cookies and praying over the people who are starving.
Okay, I made that up. Forgive me, I’m just a bitter novelist/screenwriter, worried that we’ll be thrown under the bus here, regardless of how accurate Palin’s role is played. So help me if there is one single bearded dude in flannel, most teeth missing, sitting at a bar, planning to build a bridge that goes to, say, no where.

OK. I’m taking on the Birthers. I’m becoming a Diploma-er. Yes. I want to see Sarah’s Diploma. The long form. The one with the transcripts attached from her colleges–any of them, all of them.
I don’t believe that she graduated from a US college with an approved Division I football team. I believe she paid to have her parents move, prior to her birth, to Hawaii so she could have resident tuition breaks. Ask any of the militia guys. Idaho is its own potato, uh, country just like Hawaii, so they share tuition breaks.
They also save money by keeping their entire campus on a box top. Saving up your box tops to get stainless steel flatware is totally out. Now, send in 2 boxtops and 50 cents and get your BA by return post. No socialist fascist Europeanist currency accepted. Or upgrade to a BS for 3 boxtops and 75 cents and get a free compass that always points far right. A masters degrees is 4 boxtops and a dollar. Includes a magic de-witcher ring. No PhDs. Boxtop U isn’t an elitist college.
So, Sarah, where’s that diploma? Do you have one that doesn’t say, “Socialist, Publicly Supported University of Idaho” on it? Hmmmmm?

Big smiles to you! My eldest son was texting and throwing kindly wit out this morning. I don’t think you have to go that far for McDonald’s but that is irrelevant. This might not clear either but we responded with a request for circumcision records (o:

      • Pinwheel says:

That I-9 form needs to be provided by every prospective employee, regardless. It is a very wimpy way to be sure of legal employability. I had to provide this when I was 50 and 60 years old. Get used to it. Keep the papers safe and close.

    • yukonbushgrma says:

      EXACTLY!!!

And why exactly have they been persecuting our President about his birth certificate?

The Rethugs’ thing comes down to race, I think. Trump has made it very apparent. He’s questioning why BO got into Columbia and Harvard. He says it’s because he had some kind of waiver, and it’s apparent Trump thinks BO got in due to his race. Bullpuckey!

      Well, Sarah. What’s your story?

      Yep, Baker’s ….. I agree, let’s see $P’s papers.

      • Some of the media are calling out Trump and the other repubs that continue with this idiotic line of questioning. The whole thing about how President Obama got into Columbia or Harvard really doesn’t matter. He got in and he did well. Trump is trying to make it sound like there was something shady, as he did with the birth certificate nonsense.

Back on topic, what I see with Sarah’s knuckly pointing is someone who is incredibly tense. That’s not just a knuckle but a clenched fist. Maybe it’s all that weird stuff she drinks and eats instead of real healthy food.

    • Pinwheel says:

I thought what we really wanted was to see the baby’s birth certificate, Trig? Talk about child abuse.

      • Irishgirl says:

And the media just let her get away with it. This paragraph from Sarah Jones’ excellent article linked above says it all for me.

“The press allowed Palin to use her baby shamelessly while never fact checking the myth behind her image. No one dared to touch the patently frightening way Palin used Trig on her book tour, lugging him out into the cold rain at night with no socks, no pants, and no hat. We were all supposed to turn the other way in case Palin accused us of being elitists.”

I’m trying to think of parallels with this in the media. The only thing I can think of is the time when Michael Jackson held his baby out over a balcony in Germany. We all heard about that.

  11. Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

Pinwheel – I can’t disagree with you because I have never seen or heard of this issue in Brasil. That is not to say that it is not a country with a lot of illegal activity. It is.

There is indeed the kind of misogyny that one associates with catholicism. It may express itself as you have described. Nothing in my now nearly seven years of continuous presense here indicates that but perhaps I am blind. Unfortunately, injustice, is not uncommon. I don’t know where you reside, but if it is in the US, if I were you, I would be more concerned for your own rights in terms of equal status as human beings. Yes there are problems here, but let me ask you since you raised an issue, do you have any direct and personal experience with Brasil? Have you ever been here?

    • michigander says:

I don’t pretend to be as educated in world policy as you nor Pinwheel but I will speak up. One of my nephews has been living in Brazil for most of the past 5 (more?) years. He is in love with a girl and yet our? country is barring her from coming here to marry. My sister doesn’t explain it well but I have talked to my nephew and my understanding is he has to live and work in Brasil for a certain amount of time before she can come to the United States with him. All I know is she can not come here to marry him because of immigration laws. I am not sure from which country or perhaps both?

Sorry to sound foolish but I do care and this troubles me.

    • Pinwheel says:

      Krubozumo Nyankoye:

Thank you for your response. Not for lack of dreams, but I have yet to visit Brazil. My comments are based on International press accounts of the treachery against women in Brazil. I have spent a significant portion of my life as an advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse in America. I have studied experiences of women and children from around the world. And I continue to advocate for equal rights, equal protection, awareness, education and training, triage and support.

The society in which I live continues to tolerate too much abuse and violence against women and children. Its’ perpetuation is encouraged by religious institutions and cults in America. It is perpetuated by ignorance and ‘noblesse oblige’. It is perpetuated by political establishments and corporate greed.

I live in Alaska, many of the past 20 years in the ‘Bush’. And I have 40 other years in America. My experiences encourage me that conditions of violence against women and children may change. However, we, as a community, must be ever vigilant. The loss of one is one too many.

      nem

      • ks sunflower says:

Thank you, Pinwheel, for the work you do and for expressing your concerns about it so well. I hope your vision comes true when you say you are encouraged that conditions may change. I join you in that hope.

I was told by a colleague from Australian that the motto of one of its branches of armed forces is: the price of freedom is constant vigilance. Your ending comment reminded me of its truth and urgency.

      • bubbles says:

        ((((Pinwheel))))
        thank you ♥.

      • Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

        Pinwheel,

Thank you also for your considered response. I have no such expertise as you in that field. So I will take you at your word. The fact that I am unaware of a cultural mindset here in this diverse country is in no sense any evidence that such a mindset does not exist. I was just a little surprised by what you said because frankly I must be blind. But I also have a very selective experience. I don’t spend much time at all in big urban areas.

There is no question Brasil could be improved upon as it now is. For S. America it is not too bad, at least by comparison. But there is much that could be done.

Yes vigilance is essential. Which is exactly why the corporate overlords are so willing to inflict additional pain suffering and uncertainty on – well everyone else. It tends to be a distraction.

As a human being, I have always had a profound respect for the equivalance of every other human being to me. I treat them as I would wish to be treated.

I think one must bear in mind that within memory Brasil was ruled by a military dictatorship. I was never here during that time but I have been in several others for extended periods and I can tell you in no uncertain terms it is not pleasant. I know it sounds hyperbolic and absurd but from my strange perspective here I sense the US is in danger of falling into a kind of corporate dictatorship. To some extent it is already there.

We are about equal in age, so we have probably experienced many similar periods of strife and relative calm. But our society and our individual histories are deeply complex. As if the Grand Canyon was composed entirely of laminated shales and the lamellae were 2mm thick.

  12. Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

Since I have nothing nice to say about you all know who, I will say nothing at all.

I was sorry to read you had been ill, and in a dangerous way. Was it viral or bacterial? It can be very difficult to recover from either so take time and recover completely.

There was a fantastic photograph of the aurora borealis taken from North Pole, AK recently on the NASA site, Astronomy Picture Of the Day, just google APOD and it should be in the archive. I always start my day by viewing the most recent of the images posted there. It gives one a little perspective on how important our earthly concerns really are. Or at least which ones are really worth thinking about.

I hope your book sells well. I will be interested in reading it but I will probably not be able to obtain a copy here until about July. I will look forward to it.

In a feeble attempt to make this comment on topic I will remark that at present a woman is president of Brasil. There is no obsession with polls, not much theater for the news media. President Rousseff so far has just gone to work. But then, she is well educated and has deep political experience. For example she was arrested and imprisoned and reportedly tortured during the military dictatorship. That was 1970 or so. She is a socialist. Since people here seem to understand the meaning of that word, she is also very popular. She is of course the first woman to be President of Brasil. Whether or not anyone recalls it, she was recently honored by a State Visit by none other than the President of the US. Reportedly, some significant progress was made in finding areas for cooperation between the two largest democracies in the western hemisphere. A more friendly atmosphere would probably do both countries some good. There has been a certain undercurrent of animosity between us since the dictatorship was overthrown and representative government established. It has done nothing but good for Brasil of course, but apparently it irked some of the Wall Street oligarcs enough that disputes over ethanol, cotton and exchange rates soured what should be a natural alliance. The people of Brasil know nothing of Obama, except that he did them the honor of coming here to discuss with their head of state the mutual interests and concerns facing both countries. Do a little research mudflatters and tell me who the last president to visit Brasil was.

    Best wishes to all…

    • Pinwheel says:

Richard Nixon? circa 1970, or was that when he was VP. I’m not completely sure. Excellent observation, Krubozumo Nyankoye. The resource extractors, global industrialists, environmental tyrants, misogynists do not want the “Western World’ to look too closely at Brazil. But, hey, the Olympic Committee thinks its OK for the ‘Games”.

I shall have much greater faith in the current Brazilian government when I learn that women no longer simply disappear, and men may murdur their women with impunity. The climate, the culture, the religion no longer is an excuse for treachery against women in Brazil.

      • Pinwheel says:

“and men may no longer murder their women with impunity” Dreadful, nem.

When I get Blind Allegiance…..whew and eeks! I am still working on people – proving Palin’s true colors helps educate and protect against future threats o:

      • ks sunflower says:

Wow – I know I started in the wee hours, but I also barely made it past 30 pages because of the intensity. It is well-written and easy to read, but the sheer force of the insights and reaffirmations of what we wondered about or what we’ve known makes for quite an intense read.

It was nice to see AKMuckraker (Jeanne Devon) quoted and an excerpt from one of her college papers included. Jeanne was born to write about Palin. That is clear. I am eager to read the Bailey-Morris-Devon book as well.

Truly, this Spring is going to be difficult for Sarah unless her narcissism is so profound that she cannot perceive criticism. I have little doubt that Sarah’s fame has reached its zenith and will now decline steeply. She will be infamous, not famous. Only those who willfully refuse to face the facts or lack the intellectual ability to understand the magnitude of her deceit will remain devotees.

By autumn, I wonder if the Palin brand will be worth anything at all. I imagine she will continue to think so, but I suspect the money flow will be the indicator of her political power. If it continues to dwindle, and power brokers back off from her because she will be perceived as damaged goods, then perhaps at long last, Palin will be forced into footnote status. I doubt she will go willingly or quietly, but go she shall because her moments are now numbered and diminishing quickly.

        • yukonbushgrma says:

          ks sunflower —

I can sense that this is heavy in your heart. It is in mine too.

What I fear is that there are so many now who listen to the faux-news and have no idea what is going on in our government.

I was born in Wisconsin. I’ve been keeping an eye on the Supreme Court election recount there, just started today. Already this morning they had an “irregularity” in Waukesha County — the same place where Kathy Nickolaus, County Clerk, presided and had numerous troubles in past years.

I’m worried for our election process. I worried about it in 2000, 2004 and 2008. I read Bradblog over and over during those years. There’s something wrong with our election system, and I think we need to go back to hand-counted ballots that are supervised by real people.

Right now I’m a city clerk, for just a little tiny town. But I feel I’m doing my job, and I try to do the best I can. It’s an honor, and why wouldn’t someone want to do the very best they could?

          • ks sunflower says:

Yukonbushgrma, how I wish we could somehow clone you and your sense of honor and distribute thousands of you across this land. We need people who feel as you do, who have the pride and sense of noble purpose you have to be a part of the electoral process. You are right when you say, “It’s an honor” and ask “. . ., and why wouldn’t someone want do the very best they could.” Why not indeed?

If more people were like you, if more people served with the same sense of honor that you do, there would be trust in our system once again.

Of course, I think we have to get rid of those damn electronic voting machines and block the media for predicting winners before polls close.

I read this week that not only is Tea Party trying to establish outposts in Europe, but the Dieboldt (sp?) is trying to convert several European countries to using their machines. What a disaster that could be! The Koch brothers are rumored to be behind the push. There is not proof as yet, but it does seem to make sense. With the economic struggles and social changes in Europe due to immigration, they, too, are ripe for the exploitation of fear. Apparently, some pundits believe that the wealthier countries are becoming reactionary for fear of the economic decline of other countries in EU. I can only hope that the Europeans as a whole have a strong sense of history ingrained in their collective memory and avoid the rise of fascist movements. I sometimes wonder if we are realizing the danger of having corporate power so heavily aligned with government too late.

Keep up the good work Yukonbushgrma. I, for one, am glad you are doing the work you are doing. I hope your community realizes how lucky it is to have you in it.

The preview doesn’t work on this side of the pond. The suspense is killing me.

      • ks sunflower says:

Oh, my sympathies, Irishgirl. You really are missing a good read. However, build up your stamina. It is intense and there are many good reads coming our way. The suspense will merely mean that you will experience a bigger and better catharsis when you do read this. I think you will feel it has been worth the wait – just as I suspect the Baily, Morris, Devon book will strike us. I am only 37 pages into it this morning but am already looking forward to reviewing it for several sites.

I hope the wink is on the correct side of the face. That’s the only thing that bothered me about Tina Fey’s version (or maybe Qittypants’ version?).

    • Some of us can only wink with one side of the face. I’m one of the afflicted. Odd, but true. Maybe that explains Tina Fey — just not a dual winker.

      • It took me a long time to learn to wink. I hadn’t thought about it, but I do wink differently depending on which side it is. Left side wink is easy; right side wink means I have to screw up my face to do it.

Jeanne, I am so glad to see you posting again. Not that we didn’t enjoy the substitutes, we did. However, there is only one you – a unique voice who can voice our concerns, our frustrations and our joys as one.

Your blog was the first I discovered in my quest for information on that unknown SP in 2008. I posted several times – a first for me. I tried different monikers until I found myself in ks sunflower. I had never posted a comment on a blog ever until then. But your essays caught my attention and earned my respect. I keep coming back because this blog has done the impossible – become even better over time.

Thank you for having such great subs in your absence, but thank you for coming back to us.

    • AKMuckraker says:

Thank you! Yes, feeling a bit better day by day… I am mastering the fine art of the prolonged nap. Will be posting more frequently as my brief moments of consciousness permit. 🙂

      • leenie17 says:

Napping is a very good thing. And a much underappreciated art, also, too. Sleep well!

        Jeanne, we love you.

Take care of yourself ……. BUT we all do love hearing from you.

If someone has already posted this, I apologize for the redundancy.

However, if you haven’t read this yet, it may make you smile. I found it in the comments over at IM and other places.

The title alone pleased me: “The Toe-Sucking Media and the Many Myths of Sarah Palin”

    • Diane says:

      It was great!
She is getting more frantic and crazy
Still have not heard 1 solution to our problems, just criticize, criticize and more criticism.

I honestly don’t think she will run as a republican. Because then people can ask questions of her and demand that she produce things like birth certificates, college degrees and emails from the time she was Governor.

    • Irishgirl says:

It’s one of the best articles I’ve read on the subject. She really nailed it.

    • beaglemom says:

Super article. I’d love to see it on the op-ed pages of major American newspapers.

  20. g says:

    Harvard Law Review papers

Are there no libraries in Alaska?

    • benlomond2 says:

Sarah dosen’t go to them any more…after her run in with the Wasilla librarian about what books to stock… or unstock !

    • Dagian says:

Libraries? If it’s more than 140 characters, why would she bother?

  21. mike from iowa says:

Ms Moore has got the fingerpointing down pat. I wonder if She can nail the attitude. She is actually a pretty good actress from what I’ve seen or scene of her.

  22. @coolgreenpines says:

I wasn’t being unjustly cruel when I questioned if Julianne Moore got sick seeing herself as SarahPalinUSA!! I can’t imagine otherwise. Feel nauseous just looking at it. Truly.

But oh…I cannot wait to see this movie!

  23. Ndjinn says:

With that cast, I kind of have to see it.

  24. aussiegal77 says:

Asian – why are there so many??? Bwahahahahaha! It’s because, my pretty Sarah, we’re gonna take over THE WORLD by being really good at math!!!!! Except me. I’m terrible at math…..=(…..to the eternal shame of my parents, I had to have a math tutor in high school!

But still – I plan on taking over the world. As soon as I figure out how……bwahahahahaha!

    • Dagian says:

A dear friend of Thing 1 is Asian–adopted by a white couple. He hates math, he’s terrible at it, he tells people that his complete ineptitude proves he was kicked out of the “Asian kid club”.

Of course, when the two of them get together to moan and complain about math, it’s okay. She is blonde! So they both enjoy the guilty pleasure of loathing & complaining about the same subject.

He’s the antithesis of the stereotype, she’s the embodiment. They ‘get’ each other in that respect.

They are both music majors and that’s how they plan to take over the world. Tremble–they are coming for you… 😎

  25. Skagway Kid says:

Palin’s fall in into quicksand with Trump trash could spell the end of the grifters. We would have to wait for the movie sequel. Ryan’s brain dead concept of bring the country into solvency appears to put another nail in the republican game plan. These are bad boys and they gotta go. Let them sail away on the SS Ludite.

  26. SME says:

Yes the twit and her telling knuckle. If people pay attention you will see that the bigger the lie the more she drives it home with her knuckle pointing.

  27. Leota2 says:

Poor Ms. Moore. She’s gonna need a rest and a whole lot of hugs after finishing up this acting job.

Oh my, Sarah wants President Obama’s papers? Which ones? Any of them, all of them?
Cheese and crackers Sarah’s a loon. C’mon Sarah, let’s see yours. No—not Pipers homework (you know you never got an A in anything).

  28. naughtymonkey says:

Can you say “tardive dyskinesia’? Julianne needs to get the tongue movements and the lip smacking down pat.

  29. Irishgirl says:

Hey….you must be feeling better. I’d be scared of that knuckle too. And the rest of the hand for that matter. Jullianne has her work cut out for her. 🙂

  30. bubbles says:

Dang! i almost made it here first. oh well…
the first chapters on Geoffrey Dunn’s book is available. there is no question of theft of property. this is merely a teaser i expect but it is enough to see that Mr. Dunn writes a nice page.

    enjoy.

  31. Lori in Los Angeles says:

AKM – you missed sarah’s GREATEST academic paper of ALL time – “Who’s Your Daddy?”
It was published in the ADN and it looks like she wrote it herself.

    PS -get well soon!
