Palin Thanks (almost) Everyone for Bin Laden’s Capture.

I listened with the rest of the nation last night as the news leaked about the death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of U.S. forces on the ground in Pakistan. And I listened to the President deliver (as usual) a thoughtful, respectful, address to the nation.

And then, I wondered, what would critics of the president say? What would they say about the fact that Barack Obama as Commander-in-Chief did in two years what George W. Bush as Commander-in-Chief couldn’t do in eight?

The last words in the President’s speech urged us to remember the unity we felt as a nation on 9/11, and to feel that again for a moment, as we remember the victims and know that justice in some form has been served. Is it possible, I thought, that we’d have one of those moments? Is it conceivable that just like on 9/11, Americans from all points on the political spectrum would come together to reflect, and support the President as Commander-in-Chief? Just for a minute?

Riiiiiight.

Let’s check out Sarah Palin’s Facebook entry from last night. She proves once again that no response to current events, no matter how historic, can be too petty or small. You’ve got to hand it to her, really.  Her predictable reactions are almost becoming comforting – like watching the sun rise and set – if the sun was a spiteful passive-aggressive middle school girl.

Anyway, let’s take a look. My notes in red.

Americans tonight are united in celebration and gratitude. (So far, so good. That’s a whole sentence!) God bless all the brave men and women in our military (and their Commander-in-Chief?) and our intelligence services (and the President?) who contributed to carrying out the successful mission to bring Bin Laden to justice and who laid the groundwork over the years (lovely nod to George W. Bush who really “laid that groundwork over the years”) to make this victory possible (Nope, wouldn’t have been possible without Dubya). It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of these brave Americans who relentlessly hunted down our enemy (NOT anything to do with their Commander-in-Chief… remember that).

This is a victory for the American people (not the current administration), for the victims who were heartlessly murdered on September 11 and in Al Qaeda’s other numerous attacks (not the current administration), and for all the peace-loving people of the world (except Barack Obama).

May God bless our troops (but not their Commander-in-Chief) and our intelligence services (but not the President they work for), and God bless America!

– Sarah Palin

Wow.

Well, we can all feel confident knowing that if this had been the McCain/Palin administration, there would have been no gratitude, or hat-tipping, or acknowledgment for the Commander-in-Chief who gave the orders either. Somehow the VP would have made it all possible.

And fear not. Now that we learn bin Laden was buried at sea in an undisclosed location, we can now expect “the Deathers” to make an appearance. “Suuuuure he was buried at sea. Does anyone have a death certificate?”

*****************************************************UPDATE:

Lest we think that the pettiness stops with Sarah, let’s look at the entire Alaska Congressional delegation and what they had to say.

“His death is a direct result of the determination of America’s military and intelligence forces — and it casts a well-deserved spotlight on our men and women who fight in the shadows.” – Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

“I applaud our military men and women, President Obama, and our intelligence officers for this historic moment. Since the unforgettable tragedy of September 11 nearly a decade ago, Americans have waited for justice to be served.

“It was a decade-long commitment by two presidents and thousands of American service members that I hope brings some sense of relief for the families of 9/11 victims and will help break the Al Qaeda network worldwide. ~Senator Mark Begich (D-AK)

The United States military is the strongest military in the world and it has seen this incredibly difficult mission through and the intelligence efforts by those Americans who have dedicated themselves to this search are to be commended.~Congressman Don Young (R-AK)

It’s like watching a giant game of mental Twister to see how these “patriotic Americans” on the right side of the aisle will contort their words in any way possible to not give an ounce of credit to the administration or the Commander-in-Chief of the military they supposedly love. By contrast, our Democratic Senator not only thanked the President, but even gave a little nod to the one before him. I may not agree with that sentiment, but there’s something to be said when being too gracious is your worst fault.

But while most of the attendees had no problem coming up with answers (Eliot Spitzer said Brian Williams, as did Andrea Mitchell, while SNL’s Bill Hader went for The New Yorker’s David Grann), Palin fumbled when asked.

“Oh my goodness, that’s a great question,” she said, before turning to her husband Todd and asking for his input.

When Todd also balked, Palin came back and said, “Um, gosh, that’s a great question, I have to think about it, OK? Because there are many.”

As Palin walked away from the camera, she ran into her Fox News pal Greta Van Susteren, and then turned back to the NBC cameras to shout, “Greta Van Susteren is the most influential journalist!”

“I await the reaction of the local bitter-enders to President Barack Obama’s success in finally eliminating Osama bin Laden.

Within a couple of days, he visited the Alabama disaster area, attended the White House correspondents’ dinner, got in his daily basketball exercise, played a partial round of golf, presided at five meetings to finalize the strike and then gave the order.

And just think, Sarah Palin found governing a state with fewer than 800,000 people too much work.

Here’s the deal with Sarah. Last year, Sarah basked in the glory of constant publicity and attention. She loves being a celebrity. Media attention towards Sarah fell after the Giffords shootings, cross hairs and blood libel. Polls showed Sarah dropping. Then, a guy with a bad comb over and plenty of bluster stole her spotlight. He stole it by insulting the President, questioning his birth and his ability to get into Columbia and Harvard. Even when faced with the birth certificate, he continued to steal Sarah’s spotlight by holding news conferences to boast about how proud he was. He was the focus of the best jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner, a dinner without a Palin joke and without Palin.

Sarah is just like Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction,” screaming, “I will not be ignored!” In order to get noticed, Sarah loosened up her mean mouth and insulted the President the way that Trump did. It worked; you noticed her.

I am wondering, though, given how lame Donald’s Firing gimmicks have seemed on his Reality Show (I ain’t watching anymore, when the Guy team kept BEGGING Gary Busey to be fired! but Trump would NOT), Trump’s Roast at the Press Dinner, fear of being Beck-like advertisers boycotting – – would NBC actually decide to simply decide to NOT May 16th renew the next contract?

Hope so. Stop rewarding a buffoon!

People used to joke that if President Obama had single-handedly captured Osama bin Laden the right would still criticize.

    Now I know it wasn’t a joke.

    • Cammie says:

The sad truth, isn’t it? If anything, they’re furious with him for catching bin Laden. Scary people, truly.

  8. Jay says:

To not have the character to give credit where it’s due goes to show how unpatriotic the right is these days. It’s sad and humiliating to witness adults behaving this way.

  9. Hubby and I seem to have an odd sense of timing when it comes to travel and big news events. Back when OJ was being chased on the internet, we were on our way to Guatemala. We saw the news in the airport, read it in the newspaper in Guatemala city and then had no news for the next three weeks. I was afraid they’d find out we didn’t know anything and pick us to be on a jury.

We were supposed to fly to San Diego on Sept 12, 2001. Of course we didn’t. But we did fly out on the first flight out of Seattle on that Friday. We had fun at the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland during the day and spent our evenings glued to the TV.

So, Sunday night I was finishing packing for our trip to Orlando. I turned the TV on late, after I’d heard fireworks in the neighborhood. And Monday we went to the airport, expecting I’m not sure what. Things seemed more relaxed than they’ve been for ten years. The pilot mentioned that this is a good day for Americans. I spent much of the long flight reading all the articles in the Seattle Times.

And then I find out that SP still doesn’t get it. People who criticize President Obama for any of the decisions and actions he has taken in this action end up looking like poor excuses of Americans and poor excuses of humanity. Bin Laden attacked us and a whole lot of people before. What do they hope to accomplish in not acknowledging that our President just made some very difficult and complicated decisons that give all of us a sense that at least there was some justice for 9/11.

  10. MinNJ says:

I am thrilled that Obama bin Laden is dead and celebrate the death of a madman, a serial killer and a mass murderer. Sometimes evil is best gone from this earth, and we pay, as citiziens, an army to make that happen. It is in the best interests of safety for us and for the world that he is dead. Democracy has its price, and I’m not willing to be shy about paying it.

I might remind those who are old or experienced enough to know that there are worse things than death, and I might remind those who believe that God is waiting for us all. Amen.

  11. Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

Something that bears mentioning which I saw on another blog, apologies I don’t remember who the blogger was. The title was something like “What Obama did NOT do.” The premise is simple, he was informed apparently early last September that the intelligence indicated they had found bin Laden. Faced with a decidedly unfavorable mid-term election in two months he could have rushed to try to pull off this coup before that election for the obvious game changer it would have been. He didn’t.

Millie made another good point @31, this could have blown up in his face. One helicopter on this mission failed apparently. So it was not absolutely smooth sailing. But it was obvious very carefully planned and prepared and it was executed without a single casualty. We don’t know what the operational orders were but they appear to have been crystal clear. Overrun the compound, if anyone resists, kill them. The same compound could have been leveled by drone strikes but without the surgical precision, and without the absolute certainty. It would have been far less of a political risk.

Something else he did NOT do which the original blogger did not mention is wait for a moment of greater political advantage. It took less than a year for the Bush regime to switch their focus from terrorism to Iraq’s oil. To them the real political advantage consisted in maintaining the myth of bin Laden to gin up fear whenever it was convenient to do so. Like just before elections by elevating terror alerts.

So to some here and many elsewhere who claim that this achievment unites us all, I have to disagree. Those whose sole interest is their own grip on power, or their racist hatred or whatever, are not part of US. They have reacted in lock step once again, their mantra is oppose deny denigrate belittle obstruct. They are not worthy of being called citizens, they are seditious.

As to the matter of celebrating the death of a man, I would point out that I am celebrating the death of a monster. Whatever human characters OBL had were erased almost 3000 times on one day. In and of itself his death is not much of a milestone – particularly in terms of the oft repeated phrase – justice delayed is justice denied. The attention of the Bush regime turned to wider political and economic goals, probably within days of Sept. 11, 2001. They tortured captives to generate false “evidence” that Iraq was somehow involved in the attacks. They lied to the UN, they lied to our allies, and they lied to us.

How twisted and perverse has the discourse become in the US? Why even ask the liars and criminals for their opinion on this matter? Cheney and Bush and many others should be in the dock at the Hague. War crimes are war crimes and THE war crime that heads the list is what is called unprovoked aggression. So I applaude and celebrate the death of the monster. And I decry and condemn the feckless fools who’s only effort is to divide us against ourselves.

    Cry oh beloved country.

I think this is worth reading though it is a little long. The events recounted occurred within 3 months of the attacks. Although the article itself does not say so the subtext seems pretty clear to me, there was pure political calculus involved in allowing this monster to go on murdering innocents.

  12. Fantastic analysis Jeanne. I, too, am waiting for the “deathers” to start rattling about with a whole new asinine shtick. But really, Obama had a kick ass week. Is Rick a TROLL?

    • Laurie says:

Could be. Although there are many people who don’t understand why we wrapped it up so quickly with a burial. I think they have forgotten that the United States of America does not drag dead bodies around to celebrate justice being served by the death of our enemy. We provided a burial according to his religious traditions because we are a civilized society. We obtained what justice we could from causing his death and the quicker we are finished with him the better off we are. He took too much from us already.

      • beaglemom says:

The burial was done quickly because that is the Muslim tradition. I’m glad that we did that. The whole operation was simply remarkable from start to finish. Those who are raising questions now don’t seem to have much confidence in our military and intelligence personnel, do they? And yet they’re out there “supporting” the troops. The troops today have a Commander-in-Chief whom they can truly respect; he doesn’t play “dress up” like their previous CIC.

There is so much confusion right now…aside from emotion. My son and husband wondered why he wasn’t taken alive. We are trusting the judgement of military on the scene and our President that they did and will do what is best for the world.

If he refused to be taken alive and in fact the people around him were orderd to shoot him rather than let him be captured it makes complete sense to take them out and him quickly.

As far as proving his death, I don’t want to see pictures nor videos. Personally, I don’t think that is healthy, simply sick and inflaming. I would rather see a copy of a document proving DNA evidence on the news (if anything).

Honestly, I was saddened a bit to see the celebrating in the streets. I don’t think anyone’s death should be celebrated.

I hope this is the beginning of a new chapter. Of course there will not be any parts in the chapter where the GOP behaves with decency — they appear to be utterly incapable.

I believe we “got him”, but not so sure he’s dead. He would be the most valuable of informants if he were to be captured alive. Not sure why they’d want him dead unless they figured there was nothing they could wring from him if captured alive. They way everything was rushed from killing to identifying to “burial at sea seems pretty weak to me. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear sometime way in the future that he was captured, his death faked, and he spent the rest of his miserable life being “rendered”. And if that is what happened to him, I have no problem with that. But this story of death and disposal is way too convenient and I can imagine it being a cover up for obvious reasons.

    • beth says:

He resisted his capture…he fought back…there was a firefight…he was hit by a bullet(s)…he was killed in the firefight. He was buried according to Islamic tradition, within 24-hours of his death. He was buried at sea to prevent his specific burial place from becoming a shrine/symbol of his ‘power’. However, I felt your skepticism when I first heard about the burial at sea. That one is a an eyebrow raiser. And fundamentally, I agree with your statement about believing in facts only once there is indisputable proof of facts. Yes, I believe he’s dead, and I believe he’s dead because of an operation carried out over the weekend that is much like how it was described. But I can’t say for sure it’s a fact.

And their drawing conclusions right away that Pakistani officials weren’t in on this, and why hadn’t Pakistani government known OBL was in that area?

Basically, they were downplaying every detail to put doubts and suspicion in this administration’s motives.

Silly excuses why they don’t give President Obama credit: he was busy laughing and joking at the WHCD, or he didn’t say “please”, or he didn’t check first with others, or…………….expect many tonight on the bloviating O’Reillies et al.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), made the following statement this evening regarding the announcement made by President Obama that Osama Bin Laden has been killed:

“I am overjoyed that we finally got the world’s top terrorist. The world is a better and more just place now that Osama bin Laden is no longer in it. I hope the families of the victims of the September 11th attacks will sleep easier tonight and every night hence knowing that justice has been done. I commend the President and his team, as well as our men and women in uniform and our intelligence professionals, for this superb achievement.”

“But while we take heart in the news that Osama bin Laden is dead, we must be mindful that al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies are still lethal and determined enemies, and we must remain vigilant to defeat them.”

[chuckle] I can’t help but notice the second part of what McCain said is *identical* to what POTUS told us all last night — that we have to keep up the vigil in protecting our nation.

It may just be that I’m so damned disgusted by *everything* the GOP/Baggers are doing (or trying to do) to our country, that I’m reading more into the second part of McCain’s statement than I should, but it just seems to me he’s saying: “I’m glad bin Laden is dead, but listen up, Mr. President — I’m the wise one, here, and I’m advising/telling you, that you must not stop being vigilant. You might have gotten bin Laden, Mr. President, but don’t you even entertain the notion you can relax, now, on terrorism and its threat to our nation.” It just sounds to me like McCain is ‘schooling’ POTUS *as if* remaining vigilant is solely the brainchild of the aged Senator from AZ and it’s *not* something POTUS had clearly articulated to citizens last night as something we all must continue doing.

How difficult would’ve it been for McCain to say: “But while we take heart in the news that Osama bin Laden is dead, as our President reminded us last night, we must be mindful that al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies are still lethal and determined enemies, and we must remain vigilant to defeat them”? beth.

PS — didn’t McCain announce on the campaign trail that he knew *exactly* where bin Laden was and as *soon* as he was elected president, he’d capture/kill him? b.

WASHINGTON, July 3 — The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.

    C.I.A. Closes bin Laden Unit

The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.

The decision is a milestone for the agency, which formed the unit before Osama bin Laden became a household name and bolstered its ranks after the Sept. 11 attacks, when President Bush pledged to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice “dead or alive.”

    http://nyti.ms/a91OmY #gop

    Then:

For your amusement and future reference, here’s what Bush has said about bin Laden at various points in time, depending on how he was trying to spin things:

“The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him.”
    – G.W. Bush, 9/13/01

“I want justice…There’s an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive,'”
    – G.W. Bush, 9/17/01, UPI

“…Secondly, he is not escaping us. This is a guy, who, three months ago, was in control of a county [sic]. Now he’s maybe in control of a cave. He’s on the run. Listen, a while ago I said to the American people, our objective is more than bin Laden. But one of the things for certain is we’re going to get him running and keep him running, and bring him to justice. And that’s what’s happening. He’s on the run, if he’s running at all. So we don’t know whether he’s in cave with the door shut, or a cave with the door open — we just don’t know….”
    – Bush, in remarks in a Press Availablity with the Press Travel Pool,
The Prairie Chapel Ranch, Crawford TX, 12/28/01, as reported on
    official White House site

“I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.”
    – G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

“I am truly not that concerned about him.”
    – G.W. Bush, repsonding to a question about bin Laden’s whereabouts,
    3/13/02 (The New American, 4/8/02)

    Finally:

Right wingers are out in full force trying to deny that President Obama did something their guy did not do

. No matter what they write, say or spew, or how difficult it is for them to get over the burning sting of bitterness eating away at their ids, the truth is that the Republican meme about being tough on national security has been a joke ever since Bush ignored the warnings of an attack, but today, it is not even a joke. It is a distant memory.

President Obama joins just a handful of Presidents with top notch national security and anti-terrorism cred now.

This bears repeating because it is true and because it is the one thing the trolls do not want you to say.

    So say it again.

As an example of right wing bitterness, Sarah Palin only managed to eek out congratulations to the military, showing that once again she has no idea what just happened or how it happened and once again, she is too eaten alive by jealousy of the President to bother pretending to be an American even now (yes, dear, that was a dig at your AIP affiliations. You said you wanted to play, no?).

But why would we think she would change her tune and suddenly side with her country, when she has spent the last 2 years ginning up hate against her President, often on foreign soil and military bases.

    Way to go, Sarah.

Right behind her is Rush Limbaugh, who is currently chocking on his own hubris and hatred for his country.

Who wants Osama if the meanie who won the election gets him?

Heavens knows where Trump and the rest of the clown show is, but if the Republican statements are any indication of how today will go, it seems the Republicans love them some George Bush when Obama does good things.

My belief is that in years to come President Obama will be recognized as one of our greatest presidents.

The reason for this name is everything, and I mean EVERYTHING the republicans tried to do to smear this man has back fired, proven to be untrue or it slips off his graceful shoulders like teflon.

While Donald McBirther and QuittyPants were behaving like the Mad Hatters that they are, The President was doing his job quietly, with strength and intelligence and getting results.

I was not expecting the responses her followers made to ‘her’ Fb proclamation, though.

The comments going beyond “Bless our Troops” (and/or the obligatory fawning over Missy Quity Pants) invariably praise to the hilt GWB for his invaluable leadership leading to the capture of bin Ladin. If there is mention of POTUS in their posting, it is to slam hell out of him for [insert grievance, here] and to not only dismiss his role in the capture, but to reiterate how he is [insert: destroying America, a socialist, weakening the US, an apologist for Islam, etc., here].

$arah knows her followers all too well… they picked up on exactly what she was saying; they completed the statement(s) she wanted to, but couldn’t, (as a contender for the GOP/Baggy nod for the 2012 run) make.

While Limbaugh pointed out that President Obama was successful because he continued President Bush’s, a cynic might have expected the host to harp on this point. That’s not at all what happened:

“…. it may be that President Obama single-handedly came up with the technique in order to pull this off. You see, the military wanted to go in there and bomb as they always do. They wanted to drop missiles and drop bombs and a number of totally destructive techniques here. But President Obama, perhaps the only qualified member in the room to deal with this, insisted on the Special Forces. No one else thought of that. President Obama. Not a single intelligence adviser, not a single national security adviser, not a single military adviser came up with the idea of using SEAL Team 6 or any Special Forces.”

Long story short, he mocks our president’s beautifully poignant speech that put the attention on the 9/11 victims where it deserves, and tries to insinuate the speech was all about Obama. The man is a drug-addled sicko, and it is depressing that his voice is broadcast to our Armed Forces.

        • Lynn says:

Cammie, you are exactly right. Rush was being as sarcastic, hateful, and dog whistle-y as ever, and I hate the rush to praise him for grace where there is none. If anyone can stomach listening to the whole audio of his show, it is obvious.

      • GhostbusterTX says:

Huh. I read that, and reached the opposite conclusion. Seemed to me that he was mocking the very idea that Obama could take any credit for this event. Not a single adviser thought of using Special Forces? Really? Basically a snarky riff. The “it may be…” introducing the scenario is the tell.

If so, this insinuation by Limbaugh, that Obama is being given more credit than he deserves, is parallel to the teleprompter lie – when faced with an incontrovertible accomplishment of the President, simply assert, all evidence to the contrary, that he didn’t really have anything much to do with it.

Of course I may be completely missing the mark here; I’d have to actually watch the video to hear more context and tone of voice – and I’m just not willing to do that, sorry!

        • Linda says:

RL was being hateful…who in the military or administration would have given him the inside info on who made suggestions and what course was of action was called for by whom. He’s just evil and always will be.

          • Cammie says:

Exactly. Does anyone really believe this monster who refers to our president as a “man-child” would ever give Obama credit for anything? People, these are the bad guys. They don’t do anything decent.

        • A Fan From Chicago says:

You’re entirely correct. It was total, slimey sarcasm. I listened till the first commercial break and it was Rush at his most repulsive. Don’t know how Mediate missed the point so badly. • Laurie says:

There is a debate at Andrew Sullivan’s blog about whether this was genuine praise and compliment or sarcasm. I don’t think Mr Limbaugh is capable of anything genuine.

    • Elizabeth says:

This mission has the fingerprints of the President all over it, in my opinion. There were no grandiose heroics and firepower. The strike was by Navy Seals trained to rescue hostages, extremely well planned, practiced, and executed. The US took control of the body, which was taken back to the aircraft carrier, examined, then prepared for an Islamic burial at sea. The body was treated with respect; none of the awful exhibitions we saw with Sadim Husseins’ sons’ deaths. In other words: thoughtfully planned, detail orientated, experts involved, and quietly, efficiently, (and deadly) carried out. Only three people died, and one injured. Those Seals were amazing!.

      • AKRNC says:

The RWNJ’s are having a fit at hearing that the body was treated with respect and given an Islamic burial. They really are so ignorant that they believe that to treat a dead body with respect is a sign of weakness on the part of the U.S. military. Palin’s FB page is filled with complaints about how President Obama deserves no credit because he was simply carrying out Bush’s previous policies. If that were the case, OBL would be alive and well today with nobody looking for him. They truly rejoice in their ignorance, believing that the White House should be vacated today by the Obamas so Palin can move in and make everything right with the world. The thought is more horrifying than I can even comprehend.

It’s difficult for me to feel exhilaration at the death of a human, but there is a feeling of huge relief and closure. It’s interesting that this issue was at the forefront of the last election campaign, with both contenders announcing that this would be done under their command. Then, it made me feel a little queasy that Bin Laden himself became nothing much more than a political football when it felt to me that some of biggest and unsettling issues overall were the fear and racism on which 911 pulled back the covers. I believe that’s what I am going to be witnessing now – the fear and racism on the right writhing in attempts to find new justification and a new serpent head to replace the one now dumped in the sea.

It was a weird feeling to come down from camping in a cabin on a snowy mountain to be greeted with this news shortly after returning home. I’m faced with my difficult feelings about rejoicing over death, but had I lost a dear loved one myself in the disaster I wonder if it would still be difficult? What ideas or thoughts of actual act of harm to another would not leave me feeling unsettled and confused?

Well, I found one. With no desire to read any comments or “news articles” by whack nuts & flying monkeys sure to follow this momentous and strange occasion, I avoided more news sites and checked on my dog blogs, then Sis and Barbies in PlasticLand. Oddly, I found the answer to my question of “What ideas or thoughts of actual harm to another would not leave me feeling unsettled and confused?”. Palin in an orange jumpsuit! Now that is something I can wrap my head around and giggle over. I know, I’m badder than I thought I was.

I kind of know how you feel – bittersweet, glad that he was killed and yet looking back over the 10 years there has been so much death and distruction that was a consequence of his hatred of the US – is that all there is? Is this what all the caos has been about, the death of this mad man and his ideals? Living here in Portsmouth, NH there were many people in this area that were killed on those planes. The first couple of terrorist boarded the plane in Portland, Me – 45 minutes north and then more got on in Boston, an hour to the south. The beginings of that terrible day started close to here, a unsettling feeling in itself. Today there are memorials, plaques, ball fields, gymnasiums, town bridges and parks named after the victims, a 5 k run to raise money for another victim’s cause. We are reminded year round of the people, who due to nothing else but fate, were in the wrong place at the wrong time and killed for nothing less than that they are American. Many of the planes that come back from Germany, filled with soliders returning home, land at Pease Airfield, also located in Portsmouth and there are the Pease greeters that shake every one of those soliders hands, give words of thanks, and anything else they may need. Every landing is an grand event of appreciation for these military folks. So yes it is nice that bin Laden is dead but having closure – not really, just the reality of moving on with our lives very slowly promising to never forget our neighbors and friends who either died on September 11th or are involved in combat. Time move on, even when there are times that you want the world to stop if only for a moment.

      • bubbles says:

        yes indeed and well said.

      • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

I think part of the closure for me is putting to rest the “race to find and kill bin Laden” fraught with political posturing as a way to win an election. That never settled well with me, and now as you said, real work begins anew as the world turns today just as it did yesterday.

The current Right is all about co-opting symbols and symbolic events to twist and justify their fear of change & open thought. By the time they are done with “heart”, “patriotism”, “the constitution”, “the troops”, “the flag”, “911” and so on and so on, they no longer resemble the icons they once were. Throw in Palin who added “Alaska” to the list. The right seems to be very much about cheating, taking the short path, and selfishness. If I had any empathy left for fearful & selfish people, I would feel sorry for them.

        • 24owls says:

Yes I understand your point – the politics never end do they … the pathedic hacks that want to keep pushing their political view just keep pushing and pushing and pushing no matter what is happening. It would be nice in this moment of time for the US to come together as one and be proud of what has been accomplished but that won’t happen with nit wit twits like palin. It would be nice if justice was served to idiots like palin who should be behind bars for so many reasons but is not. Maybe the new tell all books that are coming out in May will help diminish her popularity but you and I know that palin should have been nailed by Alaskan justice a long time ago and should never even be a whisper on anyone’s lips. If justice is not found in Alaska then maybe the feds will have to be involved, who knows … as long as she is nailed I don’t care.

It is pathetic that Palin cannot bring herself to even grudgingly tip her cap to the President. I’m sure she thinks she could have planned this mission ever better than Obama. Huh? What? really? WOW!

        • bubbles says:

i thought he did too but it was only ugly snark.

time for Rash Limpballs to eat dirt and die. also. too . you betcha!

      • BigPete says:

Even more embarrassing for Reverend Huckadoodle who, during his fire and brimstone “Go to Hell” celebratory sermon, also disdained from any mention of our Commander in Chief.

      • Laurie says:

I read that the praise turned into sarcastic comments about how only Obama would have thought to use Navy Seals. I would listen to the audio but that would just ruin my whole week.

      • g says:

It was sarcasm. He’s been bragging about punking the media all day.

        Sick.

  53. Enjay in E MT says:

Plus all the Thanking Gawd for blessing the US / Military / Leaders….

  54. Muppet says:

Thank you for showing her unwritten and unspoken hypocritical diss of the President for what it is.

I wanted to post on my facebook: Did you hear that? That noise was all of the GOPers heads exploding because Obama got the head of the devil himself!

    • meena says:

THINGS WE WON’T HEAR THIS WEEK – “Mr. President, your hesitation and vacillation in the Middle East breed uncertainty. It’s symptomatic of the puzzling way you govern” (Sarah Palin, April 26)

      • D. Bastia says:

Only in America, would some people regard a character like Sarah Palin with any kind of seriousness. The woman is partially educated and continues to make a fool of herself. The news media should not give her a platform to spread her idiotic talk.

  55. Jan says:

Sarah Palin is a bad person. Don’t ever expect more from her. She is incapable of goodness.
