Open Thread – Salmon in the Trees
In this insane political season of mudslinging, and chair throwing, everyone needs to clear their calendar for Wednesday night, October 20 at 7pm. And then, go to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art to refresh your spirit and learn about Alaska’s crown jewel (OK, there are lot of them, but this is a BIG one) the Tongass rainforest.
Amy Gulick, the author and photographer of a new book called Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska’s Tongass Rainforest will be on hand to take you on an incredible journey of stunning visual beauty, and fascinating science. You’ll also meet John Schoen, senior science advisor for Audubon Alaska. What could be better to cleanse your palate?
I got a copy of the book and found it absolutely breathtaking in images and words. It’s a treat you won’t want to miss. I’ll post some pictures as a little appetizer to get you energized for the main course. Here’s the first of a black bear cub.
I am so angry about Palin talking about Pat Tillman.
Bakers Dozen, I will sleep a little better tonight. Just hope her undeserving self is on a downward slope!! Thanks for the infomation on that side of California! I am attending a rally next Friday at USC where our President will be speaking. I’ve already RSVPed. I was invited via email. Yes!!
You said it Benomond! (Yawning and falling to sleep) nothing new!
same ole speech…San Jose
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/politics&id=7725328&rss=rss-kgo-article-7725328
“Organizers were hoping and expecting a crowd of 1,800. They got a little more than half that for the forum. Palin hosted by the Liberty and Freedom Foundation, a far right conservative group and the crowd that paid $25 to $200 a ticket loved her.”
Do you realize how large the San Jose Metropolis is? While it’s no New York or LA, it’s an area with over 7.5 million people, including SF and Oakland. Not including those areas, the Silicon Valley is somewhere between 2 and 4 milling people. Many of these people have more money than they know what to do with, and they could only get about 900 people to pay that little to see her? That, frankly, is terrible. Pathetic. This is an area where people are used to going places and doing things and paying for them. It has good public transportation to downtown San Jose. It has a good highway system that’s crowded, but no LA. And they got 900 people. I grew up 15 minutes from downtown San Jose. We got more people than that at high school football games and still do. (My dad still works the games sometimes). We got more people than that for school plays, but that was over a couple of nights, since the theater only seats 550. 900 people for anything like that in the South Bay Area is an abject failure, as I’m sure Ben Lomond knows.
If they paid an average $100 for a ticket, that would make, hmmm $90,000. Think that covered her fee, expenses, and the costs of renting the venue and so on? Not much of a money maker, was it! If transportation was anything near what Karen Handel’s campaign paid, the sponsoring entity went seriously into debt to have her. Wonder if she’s had to drastically drop her speaking fees? Wonder if my cousin went?
An article about the Half Term Celebrity’s new show (with some about Bristol’s thrown in) The Monitor may try hard to be balanced, but that doesn’t keep them from being funny.

I had a wonderful day on the links in Monterey… sounds of the ocean and a golf ball being struck. Thanks ZYX ! SOO much better than driving to listen to The Screeching One…

yw. Glad you enjoyed yourself.
I like these paragraphs from your link:
“While acknowledging that Palin has “a real following in the Republican Party,” the former eBay chief executive added: “But you know that I have actually supported other presidential nominees, whether it was John McCain or my long-term friend Mitt Romney. That day, I’m going to be out with voters talking about the things that matter to Californians, and that is jobs.”
Skipping a chance to appear with Palin is a politically savvy move in California, according to the results of a recent Field Poll. The survey, which was released Oct. 6, found that 58 percent of California’s registered voters hold a negative view of her, although she remains quite popular among Republicans. In addition, two-thirds of independent voters — who are essential to the campaign strategies of Whitman and Fiorina — would be less inclined to support a candidate endorsed by Palin.”
Where is aussigal? She has been missing for a while now.
she was around yesterday i believe. she ‘s been busy but keeping up on her reading she said. i was thinking about her and there she was. i figured we was gonna have to go find her if she didn’t check in soon.
With deep bows to Gilbert and Sullivan, enjoy this musical interlude…

Miller hits the real media markets
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Election-2010/Senate/2010/1015/Is-Joe-Miller-too-tea-party-for-Alaska
“According to recent polls, Miller’s support is equivalent to the current Alaska approval rating for former Gov. Sarah Palin, the conservative celebrity whose pre-primary endorsement of Miller propelled him out of obscurity and attracted about $600,000 from the California-based Tea Party Express. More support and money from national conservative groups have rolled in since the primary.”
My favorite part is where they call Sarah a “conservative celebrity.” Yep, that describes her.
When you get that from the Monitor, you know she isn’t being taken seriously as a politician by much of anyone.
Palin disses Michelle Obama in her latest hate speech.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/15/palin-takes-jab-at-first-lady/
Does she not realize that The First Lady is one of the most popular people in the country right now? Does she not realize that one of Michelle Obama’s focuses as First Lady is to support the families of the troops?
Of course she doesn’t. All Sarah Palin knows is how to take shots at anyone she feels stands in her way. What a nasty, evil, vile, repulsive creature she is.
Have I mentioned that I don’t much care for her?
No….never felt that from you. 🙂
No. geddoudaheeyah! wassamadda you?
now if someone would stand up and mention that her HUSBAND was a registered AIP member, and she broke her oath of office by quitting as the Govenor,,, it just brings a tear to my eye…
The timing of Palin’s jab against Mrs. Obama?
Lemme see….Oh, yeah, Michelle Obama was named Forbes #1 most powerful woman last week. Palin didn’t make the top ten.
Jealousy, pure and simple.
Must suck to be a narcissist who can only maintain the delusion of her own superiority by trying to cut down other people.
thanks OMG. now maybe we see some real action:

I respectfully request that you bring this matter of your company’s sponsorship of hate speech leading to violence to the attention of your fellow directors as soon as possible. I believe no responsible company should advertise on Fox News due to its recent and on-going deplorable conduct.
While we may agree to disagree about the role our citizens and our government should play in promoting social justice and the common good, there should be no disagreement about what constitutes integrity and professionalism and responsibility in discourse – even when allowing for and encouraging contending diverse opinions intelligently argued. This is not a partisan issue. It’s an American issue. No one, left, right or center, wants to see another Oklahoma City.
The next “assassin” may succeed, and if so, there will be blood on many hands. The choice is yours. Please join my call to do the right thing in this regard and put Fox News at arm’s length from your company by halting your advertising with them.

Another real Fuehrer? If we think things are getting extreme here:

“Yet xenophobic rhetoric has crept in. Germany is currently enswathed in debate over comments by Horst Seehofer, president of the Bavarian Christian-Social Union, who stated days ago, “It is clear that immigrants from other cultures such as Turkey and Arabic countries have more difficulties. From that I draw the conclusion that we don’t need additional immigration from other cultures.” The CSU is a sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats.”
A very good reason for us to be funding economic recovery. Not that the economy is the whole cause, but it sure doesn’t help here or in Europe.

As this is an open thread, I’m including this comment from the Washington Post site:
By week four, we can pretty much say that Bristol has never looked happy to be here and we’re beginning to suspect that somebody else talked her into doing this gig to serve, well, somebody else’s ambitions. Bristol keeps bringing up the Big Contradiction in the Room, and she does it again tonight, in a rerun clip from Monday: “I go around and I talk about abstinence and then I’m here in my underwear doing a dance about sex and stuff, so hopefully it goes well — hopefully I can pull it off,” she’s heard to say as we see her, wearing only a large white shirt and opaque stockings, preparing for Monday’s dance. We can see her future speaking engagements: “Don’t be like me girls. Don’t get pregnant — and don’t go on celebrity dance competitions!”
po’ little baby girl… what a sad young woman. i am a mother and my heart goes out to Bristol. a mother’s love or a mother’s hate follows a child their whole life long. it can twist and make ugly the natural life force of young love and sexuality or it can make beautiful the act of love and of loving the world entire. this, above all, is the reason we must bring this woman and all who admire her doings, down. we must not let them win!! no matter what happens on election day our fight is not over. for we fight not flesh and blood. we fight the evil that has possessed these unfortunate non empathetic humans. we fight against their sponsors. we fight against all who would bring their ugliness and their ignorance into our homes and our schools. gird up your loins pups. we are going to do battle!!
I wouldn’t allow my daughter to do that. I’ve held my tongue on this. I’m not familiar with the rumbas and whatnot…but I would give my approval for “dancing” because I believe it is part of the arts…what Bristol did was not art.
Anther political cartoon. Those miners are better off than we are!

And on a different note – Sojourners has been actively involved in promoting civility in the public dialogue – especially since our *ahem* ‘friend’ Glen Beck called the founder out as one of those dangerous social change progressives.

Just a little something to munch on.
Quelle surprise!
Miller’s pomposity and piety with regard to government aid programs has all along been in line with the usual screechingly hysterical self-righteousness Tea Party candidates bring to such matters, railing against Obamacare and other “entitlement” programs and promising to end the “welfare state.” That makes it all the more delicious now that he and his family have been exposed for taking state medical aid, unemployment insurance, farm subsidies, hell, even for using state equipment to run a private political campaign.

Great post. Matt Taibbi’s new book should be fun. He wrote for one of our local papers for a while, and I think he’s much more talented than his dad (a newsreader).
Rick Scoot of course thinks drug ‘testing’ is a jooly good idea ….
Sure he owns some service that does this.
Ah … feels like Saturday today. Mr. Terps and I went to workout at the Y and then bought chicken wings to grill and I just finished baking the sweet potato fries! Yum!
He has to go to work later, though.
Anyway, FL gov. candidate Rick Scott’s great plan to ‘save’ the Florida economy includes eliminating corporate taxes!!!! I’ve written an article outlining in brief how the tax savings (5.5%) cannot create jobs except at corporations that currently make a vast profit – and even then it is contingent on whether they use that savings to hire more people.
He also thinks drug tesing welfare recipients is a grand idea.
Why is this man, this crook, running neck-and-neck with a true Mama Grizzly, Alex Sink?
Arg!!!!
Must go comment on the FL blogs now.
See y’all later. I smell baked sweet potato fries!
Alex Sink for Governor of Florida!
Yes She Can!!!

Okay, it’s open thread, so I’m tossing this into the mix. From The Washington Post site:

Today on Amy Goodman , she suspended her planned program to devote the whole hour to:
Hermann Scheer (1944-2010): German Lawmaker, Leading Advocate for Solar Energy and “Hero for the Green Century” in One of His Final Interviews.
Hermann Scheer, one of the world’s leading advocates for solar power, has died at the age of sixty-six. The German economist and politician helped make Germany a renewable energy powerhouse and inspired many across the world to expand the use of solar power. Scheer had been member of the German Parliament for three decades and was the president of EUROSOLAR, the European Association for Renewable Energy. In 1999, he won the Right Livelihood Award for his “indefatigable work for the promotion of solar energy worldwide.” When he received the award, he described solar energy as the energy of the people. We met up with Herman Scheer last month in Bonn, Germany, for what turned out to be one of his final interviews.

I live in bear country.
The dog can chase the black bears away, but the browns, not so much.
We really try to embrace the bears here. They are such wonderous animals. Till the cubs climb up onto the 2nd floor balconey and decide to rough house.
In all honesty the bears can annoy greatly. But to trap them, as our Board of Kill Everything Game contemplated, is re-donk-u-lis.
Ever watch a four year old watch two black bear cubs play tug of war with a tricycle?
It ain’t purdy.
Question about those bears, please. Are the brown bears grizzly bears?
yes- browns ARE grizzlies
—–
Haven’t seen fight over a tricycle but had to restrain my guy from running outside when he was 4 , when a black bear was batting his beloved lil wheelbarrow all over . Holy moley!
Beloved wheelbarrow made it through better than I expected and after some patching and repairing was it pronounced fit for duty by it’s owner…
It lopsidedly delivered many , many more loads of 1-stick-a- load firewood, bounty from the garden, buckets of berries, and dreams before it finally had to be retired.
Always got put in it’s place in the mud room when not “working” after that also… too.
I imagine not. Especially if the toddler who belongs to that tricycle is nearby. 😮
Would love to spread the word about McAdams 4 Point plan for Veterans and Military Community.

Beautiful post. Thanks for sharing it.
Way to go, angelajean!!
I hate animal cruelty such as is espoused by Parnell’s latest plans. It’s all so anti-Alaskan. I mean who exactly wants to torture small and large bears in traps? Who? Who? Why are they here? Why are they running my Board of Fish and Game? Please explain that to me. I’ve lived here nearly sixty years. Why do these johnny come latelies have to get in my face and do this stuff. Get them out! Get a new Governor in there please!
Hear ya, sudsy.
Thank you!
I agree, sudsy. I know that Miller is the fly paper right now attracting most of the negative press, but Parnell is definitely a sleeper rogue who is probably enjoying being under the radar right now. If Joe Miller is Palin with a beard, Parnell is Palin with a milquetoast demeanor (but no less frightening). I really enjoyed the Anchorage press article that came out yesterday about how the gov race is getting eclipsed by the senate race. If you want to read it go here.
Here’s hoping for a Berkowitz/Benson victory!
I want a bumper sticker that says “Real Alaskans Don’t Trap Bears”
I love the pensive expression on that bear’s face. Can’t wait to see this exhibit!
Ed Schultz wants to get McAdams on his radio show and TV show can someone let his campaign know this
Thanks
Cynthia
Will do! Also, he got a great atta-boy on Chris Matthews last night.
Yep, posted on the last open thread. Both Chuck Todd and Chris Cisilla (sp) said their sources show Scott picking up the support of the Anchorage business community. Guess that Chamber meeting went really well. If you watch the show at MSNBC its about 20 minutes in.
The state of Alaska lawsuit does NOT represent my position regarding the healthcare bill. What can we, who are Alaskans and who want the healthcare bill implemented do? This is a rogue action I believe by the rogue (as in “I’m going more rogue…” Queen of ignorance) department of law run amuck? We’ve got to get a different Governor in there. Clap if you agree.
CLAP! CLAP! CLLLLLLAAAAPPPPPP!!
Vote Ethan Berkowitz and Diane Benson and Scott McAdams!
Agree with your thought that the B-Queen is behind this!
Thanks for agreeing with me. Governance has been slipshod lately. I’m seriously worried about this state if we do not change things out immediately! Thanks for your hand there. Right on!
I was just day dreaming the other day that Ethan pulled off an upset and Scott won his own race. You gotta visualize to make this happen, right? 🙂
I love your dream. Please make sure every democrat you know votes and encourage them to vote for a return to an Alaskan viewpoint. To heck with “the tea party”. The billionnaires can take their balloons and private jets, bozoes, and just vamoose from our politics!
I’ll be sure to do that, sudsy. Thanks for the encouragement!
… and don’t forget their party planners! Big claps above, too.
Vote for the Democratic candidates in Alaska. All of them.
All of them. Any of them. Oh, just everything that is out there, Katie.
Anyone covered this article about Joe Miller?
http://newsminer.com/view/full_story/9902197/article-Former-mayor–Alaska-Senate-candidate-Miller–not-truthful–about-borough-employment?instance=home_news_window_left_top_1
it’s been on adn. I keep waiting for AKM to post something on it, but I’m sure she is researching all the info before posting.
It’s pretty much covered on the Miller isn’t going to answer any more questions post.
Funny thing, that! Yesterday I was joking about how the Miller cackle would start doing two things to smarm Joe’s way back into the race – round those kids up and put ’em out there, and discredit Whitaker.
“Whitaker’s allegations against Miller don’t add up, GOP leaders say”
http://alaskadispatch.com/dispatches/politics/7165-miller-tonight
We have a temperate rainforest here in Anchorage. It’s called the Chugach National Forest. Dogs are not indigenous species. I do not bring mine into the forest. They would hunt and kill the squirrels and perhaps the birds. I hope the forest plan is not to “waste” the forest closest to the industrial areas and highway to make way for extraneous human eternal playing or recreation. Human living is ok; but “swashbuckling” trailblazing is antithetical to forest health. For each tree that is cut down six more will fall in the opening. They do not fall straight down; they slip sideways; get hung up; and fall without warning. Just make your way through; do not build fake “iditarod” trails. Let the owls, eagles, squirrels, voles, song birds, martins keep their homes untrashed by human “trailblazing”. Thanks. Lots of love…
This was written two years ago and still rings true about Palin and now O’Donnell and some of the other Teanuts.

Too cute! I can hardly bear it!
Oh no you didn’t! The pun police are now searching for you. 😉
I have accepted my punishment, and am now in the punitentiary.
So, did you hear about the man who walked up to the cute bear and asked, “What’s ursine?”
Okay, that was a good one..!
Come here and let me smite you just a little bit.
….and then he got ate….LOL
Oops!
Illinois candidate’s name misspelled as ‘Whitey’
By Karen Hawkins / Associated Press Writer October 14th, 2010 04:24 PM
CHICAGO – An Illinois gubernatorial candidate’s name was mistakenly listed as “Rich Whitey” instead of Rich Whitney on thousands of Chicago electronic-voting machines and will be corrected, elections officials said Thursday.
TYPO OF THE YEAR
Wow, that is a spelling error you do NOT want to make!
giggle..snort..heeheehee
My very own state. Mark Kirk teabagging on the stealth for our POTUS’s old seat; Daley retiring, Rahm’s rising, and Vrdolyak (who visciously fought Harold Washington) has been resentenced (first to mild), Blago’s defense in the millions…what can I say? But, we keep on keeping on. Because it’s what we do.
While Palin tells a Canadian audience “When I do run again I will be more rogue”, others in the Tea Party seem to be favoring another candidate:

Putting the NASTY in dynasty for far too long already.
DH Happy says a Tea Party is for little girls with imaginary friends.
From his lips to God’s ears, eh?
Well, bless your DH. I had to laugh at that one.

I did…I believe she attended the graduate course: Palin Victimology and Ignorance.

I have tried a couple of times to post the lyrics to my song on the NeilYoung website, but apparently there must be a word or two which are not permitted. Is there a link to the words which are not permitted so I can sanitize the lyrics? (I thought it was family friendly. Is GOP a curse word?)
.
In the meantime you can listen here @ #38 Contract (On America):

London Bridges says: Is GOP a curse word?
Well, it is around here.
Heh heh…good one.
even my die hard Republican golf buddies don’t like Palin politically… did I describe their attraction to her in a PC manner correctly ?? 🙂 I was thinking about going to the San Jose event, but after dealing with funeral expenses, have opted out for a round of golf instead of listening to a screeching Banshee…
Condolences. Enjoy your golf game.
My condolences for your loss.
Re: San Jose, sounds like you made a wise decision. I got ill just reading about it in the Mercury News this morning.
Perhaps the real reason that Palin is speaking in California:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130585091
And then she’s off to Reno to launch some Tea Bagger bus, or something like that.
A few months ago, I had a bear and 3 cubs up in my willow tree behind the house.
ok. i’ll bite. why was they in your willow tree. was they sleepin’? was they having a picnic? was they singing a song?
seriously, London Bridges i didn’t know bears could or would climb trees. i always thought that if a bear was chasing a person then that person could try to climb a tree and be safe.
DRAT!! there goes my contingency plan for bears who might try to harm me should i ever find myself ‘eye to eye and belly to belly’ so to speak.
Alaskee folklore: What’s the difference between a black bear and a brown bear? If you climb a tree to get away, the black bear will climb the tree to get you whereas the brown bear will knock the tree down to get you! 😉
And if there are no trees, it’s…a polar bear!
If it’s upside down, it’s a koala bear!
And black bears growl only in the movies 🙂
Black Bears eat you first, ask questions later. Brown Bears (should say Grizzleys since bears come in all colors) will, might possibly give you the benefit of the doubt. Bears are much more intelligent than Princess Wind Between Her Ears. Even if she tries to claim she’s one of them.
I haven’t heard or seen a word of what she thinks about being relations with thrice-divorced-400-pound Limbaugh & PRESIDENT Obama.
And Alaska reality: Never climb a tree to get away from a bear because you will just end up fighting a bear in a tree.
What’s that other story about identifying from scat? If it’s got berries and plants it’s a black bear. If it’s got berries, plants, bells and smells like pepper, it’s a brown bear!
Good Grief!! what’s a Bubbles-like critter to do if said critter was to find herself surrounded by nature and “gulp” bears? do they like peanut butter and honey sandwiches?
As an appetizer…
bubbles- do NOT plan on climbing a tree to get away from a bear! LOL
http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2010/10/06/sleepy_bear_in_tree_challenges_oregon_firefighters/
I love this pic too
And I know there’s a great big mama bear hanging right nearby.
I’ve seen her …
The Tongass is all around me- it is an amazing forest…a neverending vibrant drama at the intersection of land, sky, and sea
see??? that’s why my kids don’t let me go a roaming around and exclaiming the beauties of nature by myself…..Hm-mm-mm…come to think of it they don’t like for me to roam by myself and exclaim the beauties of the cities neither….for some reason they have convinced themselves that i will somehow get into trouble. i don’t know why that is…..
The three babies were sleeping in the tree. The mama bear came down just like it was climbing down on a ladder. The willow tree is a huge tree.
Also, don’t try to outrun a bear. They run very fast!
You are so lucky! I do enjoy our mountains, but Tongass is unique. TGIF, everyone-
Last spring, we had a young black bear in a tree about four miles from my house…on the edge of the Rochester city line, not far from the giant Kodak factory complex! Poor thing ended up climbing up about 40 feet, trying to get away from all those scary hoomans standin’ below him, flashing cameras in his face.
Here are the lyrics to my election inspired song, Contract (On America):

Don’t Get To Go To School.
Contract With America
Began Pre-’95.
Don’t Want National Healthcare
To Keep The Poor Alive.
Contract With America
Everyone Needs A Gun.
In Case The Poor Rise Up
We’ll Have A Little Fun.
Contract With America
Ain’t Welfare A Bitch?
Eliminate For Everyone
Except, Of Course, The Rich.
Chorus: Trickle Down (4X)
Contract With America
Preys On Our Hates & Fears
Just Vote The GOP
Ignore Poor Children’s Tears
Contract With America
It’s Really Quite A Scare
They Brought In The Elephants
Clowns Already There.
Contract ON America
I Guess It’s Pretty Cruel
If You Think About It,
It’s Not The Golden Rule.
Pledge To America Inc.
The Great American Hoax
It’s Really Quite A Stink
A Plague On America’s Folks.
Chorus: Trickle Down (4X) Ken Swiatek ©

So… did Sarah & Todd drive down to CA again? Or are they making their way back to AK with a stop in San Jose?

“With husband Todd standing offstage – he’d just driven the family motor home down from Alaska – it was Palin’s first stop in her three-city swing through California over the next few days…”
I’m thinking that if the Palins truly owned a motor home there would be half a million pictures of them with it – just like the famous book tour bus that nobody traveled on.
How’d they fit a motorhome on a chartered jet?
Maybe they towed it behind…?
LOL
October 20 will be my dear old daddy’s 79th birthday, also, too. He’s a life-long supporter of wildlife and forests and rivers and Mother Nature. Salmon in the Trees sounds like the perfect birthday present for him.
Here’s my gift to all of you this fine Friday morning, in the spirit of Yes We Can this election season.
I’ve got a hammer, and I’ve got a bell, and I’ve got a song to sing all over this land:

Ahhhh. I listened and tear were just rolling down. I do miss Mary. Saw them in concert at least 15 times. Walked with them twice. Loved them forever. Thank you for the nice way to start my day. Finishing two quilt tops today, starting four more, and getting a haircut. And, driving!!!!! I am cleared to be around people! Free!
So very happy for you! Enjoy your haircut, and your drive. Big hugs!!

Garcia-Maturey told reporters inside the courtroom that she was excited because she would like to vote.
“Ahora voy andar por todo el mundo,” she said in Spanish. Now I am going to go around the world.
