I had many ‘controlled’ screams at the radio and TV today. It seemed all were talking about the ‘Sherrod incident’ and all were trying to figure out if the WH-Admin-Ag Dept-NAACP was/were out of line *or* if the GOP-T Baggys-Briebart was/were. Those were the two options. Only.

What I was yelling at the radio and TV, was what some have mentioned on this thread… the media –from ABC, to NBC, to CBS, to NPR, to our local newspaper, all those in between– are equally culpable; possibly even *more* culpable.

Had even *one* of them stopped to investigate what they were reporting *to the masses!* before they reported it, the ‘story’ would have been told in a totally different voice. The story would have been that, once *again*, a website had posted a heavily edited video and unsuspecting people were being exposed to what was obviously a fabrication *specifically* intended to thoroughly discredit an employee of the US Department of Agriculture.

    But, no.

Instead, all of them picked up –as totally, fully, and wholly legit– what Briebart posted online. And they ran with it. Lazy!, lazy!, lazy! and completely unworthy of the profession they’ve chosen to practice….leastwise as the profession was before the advent of instantaneous ‘news’ via the intertubes and the whole www thingy.

Hell, even I know that when you do the googles on something, if the first 3, 4, 5, or more links that pop up have the *exact* same wording, there is something a bit screwy…that they (the links that pop up in response to your query) are all from the *same* source and Cannot be used/trusted *unless* you investigate further (like go to the *source* for confirmation and/or to the *parts* making up/reported by said source, to make Sure all the parts ‘fit’ and are all legit.)

I think, I hope, this’ll be a lesson to the DNC/Admin/’liberals’ to *not* –ever again!– take as legit *and* actionable the cr@p spewed by the likes of Briebart, Faux, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, etal, without *first* checking it out six-ways-from-Sunday. They’ve already fallen for the [completely manufactured!] ‘outrage’ over ACORN and Van Jones — hopefully ‘third time’s the charm’ and they’ll finally “get it” this time.

I hope, even more!, that ALL the media will learn from this…and, if not, that ‘we’ will keep their feet to the fire until they do. There is *no* excuse for the media to spread total falsehoods to the public just because they are too lazy to bother actually *investigating* the story *Before* they report it. (Well, except for ‘Fox: The mouthpiece of, and for, the perpetually outraged and the terminally stupid’ — I don’t know if they’d be able to tell the complete, whole, and full truth about the vast majority of things even if they had a twinge of conscience pestering them, anyway…it’s all about the ratings, don’cha know, nothing else.)

Guarandamntee, once the media starts (again!) holding their *sources* to standards of honesty, the likes of Briebart, Palin, et al, will become the laughing stock to the *entire* nation that they already are to us. They’ll fade into the garbage heap, irrelevance, and obscurity in which they belong.

‘sides, which, I *really* don’t like yelling at my radio and TV. People look at me most strangely when I do. beth..

beth I do not disagree with you, but will be a little bit of a devil’s advocate here.

It’s only been maybe ten-fifteen years now that we’ve had a 24/7 news cycle AND massive consumer access to internet with feedback (kinda like what we’re doing right now). This is still really a new animal and we (and our candidates, representatives and POTUS) are going to have to adjust to it.

That being said, naturally there is no manual. There are no instructions. We are making it up as we go along, and the current administration is making the best guesses it can as to how things will ‘play’ with the public, in, as KO says, ‘this atmosphere’. Mistakes can be made and clearly were in this case.

The clear answer to “how can we keep from making this mistake again?” is to take time to talk to the people involve, take time to investigate, take time to research the facts before you make a big judgement.

Taking time, is unfortunately at odds with today’s news atitude that if one does not get the story out right away, they lose.

But the fact is, the taking of at least a little time is the right thing. Everyone should do it. We should all do it.

Does anyone familiar with the AK rules know if you have a kid who is not Native and they’ve been getting health care as though they are, what happens? That seems like insurance fraud, to me. But if the kid is adopted? What are the rules for covering the non-Native adopted kid? Was Menard part Native? Any one know? Could this be the Al Capone moment?

Netroots should have a multi-day round table/brainstorming of what can be done in situations where out of context video or quotes is used. Containg specific good strtegies for the accused, employers of the accused, and groups associated with the accused (past and present).

Maybe I’m not expressing what I mean very well, but if there were a manual (or rather, a short pamphlet) on “what evidence should be checked before just believing what you see when watching any edited video” the over-reaction portion of this travesty probably would never have happened.

True, though, if they knew FOX news’ source was Breitbart, that shoyuld have raised the red flag right there to check it out first, let her at least tell her side of the story, before sacking her.

I hope they (WH and Dems) use this a seriously learning-filled teachable moment.

*”On behalf of our administration, I offer an apology,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said during Wednesday’s daily briefing, acknowledging that the administration had not seen a full tape of Sherrod’s comments prior to Tuesday evening. “Look, a disservice was done, an apology is owed. That’s what we’ve done.”

Gibbs relayed that Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack had been trying to speak to Sherrod on the phone. And later in the day, the Secretary held a press conference of his own during which he relayed that he had, indeed, talked to Sherrod, offered to hire her back, and apologized profusely for the episode.*

AKM and Shannyn – Have a blast in Vegas – I cannot attend Netroots this year (and I am less than an hour away via airplane). Meeting you last year in Pittsburgh was amazing, and I cherish that time.

I had a dream that AKM put $5 on #5 on the roulette wheel, and she won – hey, you never know!

Looking forward to updates from Vegas, and please give my regards to “K,” aka “enough with the trainwreck.”

Here’s a link to a story about teachers in TX. Great.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/21/texas-teachers-taking-sec_n_654444.html

Our neighbor has her parents living w/her/husband/2 kids. Her mother just got a job as a teacher’s aide in a 9th grade class for students w/behavioural difficulties. $13,000/yr. Astonishing. That’s less than her husband gets on disability. At least he isn’t a teabagger.

And a couple of days ago while driving down the road saw two cars following each other, local constables, one of them driving a brand new camaro, the other a brand new mustang. What, the standard (cheaper) cop cars aren’t good enough anymore? I don’t get it.

And of course while shopping for school supplies yesterday on our list (among many other things): a ream of copy paper, clorox wipes, baby wipes, dry erase markers. WHAT IN THE WORLD? It’s been a long time since I had to purchase grade school supplies (daughter #1 is entering year 2 of uni this fall), and I remember having to supply her with her own box of kleenex, and I can live with that, but copy paper? Clorox wipes? Dry erase markers? What next, toilet paper?

Meanwhile teacher’s aides get $13k/yr and constables driving brand new sports cars.

And let me point out that our little pocket of tx has 90,000 people, and the average family income is probably over $150k/yr, average education is masters.

Well now, good morning mudpups. I live in a very red part of Alaska. Our local paper has a poll going about whether you would vote for SP for president in 2010. Bwahahahaha. So far the results are 28% yes and 73% No. You can go and vote and even leave a message as to why or why not. It is just a little something to make you feel good for the day (to punch that no button). Anyway, if you want to indulge, go to http://www.peninsulaclarion.com, the poll is about half way down the page on the right.

  37. Have a great time in Vegas. Not my favorite place, but you will be with a lot of fabulous people. Yes, it’s hot, but it’s a dry heat, and building there are air-conditioned. It does always seem to be an odd place for a summer convention, given the weather. I went there in 2006 with my daughter and son-in-law for a Harry Potter convention, and we had a great time. But it would have been nice to be some place a little cooler so we could have spent some time outside.

The legend of Sarah Palin set to music.

The Ballad Of Davey Crockett song link: http://www.televisiontunes.com/Davey_Crocket.html

    THE BALLAD OF SARAH PALIN

(sung to the television theme song “Ballad Of Davey Crockett”)

Lives in a compound up in Wassilly,
Behind a big fence so Joe can’t see
She got a taste of being “Mavericky”,
So she quit her job as Alaska’s G
Sarah, Sarah Palin, the lipsticked mama bear!

Tea-Baggers follow her where she goes,
Starin’ at their tv’s when she’s on Fox shows
A Palin sighting sets them all aglow,
As she shakes their hands and then takes all their dough
Sarah, Sarah Palin, spreading her hate and fear!

Through Red State woods she’s a marchin’ along,
Makin’ up yarns like her “death panel” song
Her looks are frightenin’ and she smells quite strong,
She’s really just a liar with facts all wrong
Sarah, Sarah Palin, the brain-dead buccaneer!

Letterman said that she dresses like a whore,
Then she screamed so much that her throat got sore
She had money but she needed some more,
Got herself a Greyhound for her book tour
    Sarah, Sarah Palin, profiteering pioneer!

She says the Lord is her guiding hand,

Thanks for this information. What a fascinating story.

I am sickened by what happened to Ms. Sherrod. I am listening to Morning Joe and Company spinning this story further. They have talked about it for at least 15 minutes and are blaming the White House for her firing and how this is bad on President Obama. Vilsak is also getting it (as well he should) along with the NAACP. Fox News hasn’t been mentioned, just the news being broken on a “conservative website.” Pity they didn’t watch Rachel last night.

Ooh, Morning Joe and Mika ended the segment laughing about Glenn Beck and what he would say about this tonight. Joe pretended to be crying like Beck and said “Seriously, the WH is afraid of a crying man with a chalk board?”

If only Beck could be dismissed that easily. He is still dangerous in that so many whacko-types listen to him. This whole incident disgusts me and I am hoping Pres. Obama will just come out and blast the living —- out of that far right crap. Enough is Enough. Like Rachel said last night- Van Jones, ACORN and now this. They are wrong in their smears, but end up winning.

KO twittered yesterday that CNN and MSNBC spend all day yesterday trying to fix the damage of FOX’s wrong and misleading information. True (except for Joe.)

      Enough is Enough. Seriously.

Seriously!, did their parents never teach them to be plain old *honest*?

It’s because of people like them that our court system demands those testifying swear to tell: “The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” beth.

      • I was glad I watched Rachel and Lawrence, in for Keith, last night. They gave a lot of useful information. There was also a brief interview with Ms. Sharrod, who seems to be very forthright and truthful. Wish we could say the same for Fox. I don’t like Morning Joe for just that sort of spin he often puts on things. The truth, but twisted. Besides, by the time he comes on here, I should be asleep.

I think Rachel really got it right – FOX lies and doesn’t research their stories and they continue to get away with it. I’m glad that Rachel and Lawrence called them on it and showed clips of their over-the-top reactions to the lying story.

People connected with the White House really need to start doing their own research on these stories before reacting to them. Firing someone for being a racist is the right thing to do, but only if it’s true. And this obviously wasn’t and didn’t take as long to sort as the Acorn story did. Shame on them for adding to smearing a good woman’s name. Now they need to apologize and offer to re-instate her in her job.

I sincerely hope that the White House has finally learned its lesson about rushing to judgement before having all the facts, especially when your source is Fox News. Fox may delight in smearing people with no evidence, but I expect more from our intelligent, reasonable President and his administration.

I saw an interview with Ms. Sherrod last night and she seemed most upset that the NAACP had issued a statement without ever contacting her and asking for her account of what happened. On Rachel Maddow last night, Ben Jealous of the NAACP admitted to making a mistake by making the statement as soon as the story broke in the middle of the night, before waiting to find out what the true story really was. Rachel did a great job, as always, in showing how the main point of Ms. Sherrod’s speech was actually the complete opposite of what the edited video implied and how important facts were left out, like that the incident that Ms. Sherrod was describing in her speech actually took place more than 20 years ago.

The most frustrating thing about this whole situation is that Fox and their right wingnut viewers seems to be seeing this as a great victory, rather than an embarassment for being exposed as the liars and manipulators they are. They give me agita!!!
