Book it, Dano. The Mudflats Family Emergency Plan.

For those of you who are loyal readers of the blog, I want you to bookmark the OLD blog site, in case you don’t have it any more. It’s mudflats.wordpress.com

Right now it’s used for archives of all the 2008 election articles, but the old site has much bigger better faster servers than the new site. SO… when something really exciting happens and everyone and his uncle in the world links to The Mudflats and crashes the site, check back to the old address. That way you can read and comment there, and relieve a little pressure from this site. I’m going to try to figure out what to do so we don’t have this problem any more, but in the meantime, this is Plan B. Think of it like a family emergency plan. If you can’t get home, we’ll all meet at the bus stop.

I’ll try to anticipate things which might have broader appeal than the usual and post them over there as a preventative measure. You just never know what may happen in the next week!

Also, you can always check on The Huffington Post if you suspect there’s been some extra-tantalizing news that caused “site swamp.”

In the meantime, thanks for your patience! Carry on!

(RIP James MacArthur, the original “Dano” on Hawaii 5-0, who passed away today. I loved Dano!)

I had trouble getting the page to come up yesterday but instead of being annoyed I was very happy, because it meant that Mudflats was getting a lot of readers! Nothing wrong with that! Given that I’ve been an almost daily visitor since late August 2008, I don’t mind waiting in line while others less fortunate get a turn.

Thanks so much for all you kids do.

  4. puffin shrapnel palin says:

I echo your farewell to James MacArthur. The League of Washington (DC) Theatre Awards hold an annual event named after his mother, Helen Hayes. Ms. Hayes attended every Helen Hayes Award event until her death, accompanied by her son, James. James has attended every year since to honor his mother and the DC theatre community. He will be missed.

  5. jimzmum says:

I am bookmarked and ready. Thank you, AKM.

  6. LibertyLover says:

OK. Which is it? I saw headlines saying that Murkowski could have her name spelled out and others saying she couldn’t.

    Which is it?

    • Bretta says:

The first ruling – no lists.
The “Stay the Stay” from yesterday – lists ok but no party affiliation may be listed with the names.
      Tomorrow – who can guess?

The rule is no electioneering within 200 feet of the polling place, but you can bring in your sample ballot or other names written to help yourself, but it must be discrete and not shared with anyone. Although I understand the names can be on a list posted at the “polling place” by the DOE but not in the “voting booth.”

That’s what I think I’ve recently gleaned… hopefully this helps.

    • Alaska Pi says:

To add to what Bretta said-
Supreme Court accepted /decided to review the lower court’s ruling at the request of the state.
In place currently, as court begins to review , is a modified list rule which includes the sequestration of any ballot a voter who requested the use of the list makes (pending final decision )
      Arguments start today.
Since everyone can vote without the list and have their ballot processed normally , this doesn’t change anything except the treatment of ballots folks use the list to cast and those folks have to ask to use the list.

  7. Ah, I loved Dano. So sorry to hear that.

The old site is book marked – thanks for the tip. I couldn’t get here the other day, so it’s nice to know what the problem was.

  8. fishingmamma says:

Over on AK Dispatch there are photos of the rally. Wait just a cotton-pickin-minute! Are people being wanded as they come in the door?

So – before the primary, we see Miller’s Humvee in a parade surrounded by heavily-armed …well…Guys in Miller t-sherts. Now we see his audience being wanded?

My head is going to explode.

    • Arctos says:

I think it might be convention center policy. I went to the Rage City roller derby Saturday night at the center, and they wanded everyone and looked in our bags. I didn’t really care for it (thought the staff were very friendly about it) but I can see why they would do it.

    • AKMuckraker says:

Yes, I got the third-degree “wanding”. It was quite something. I’ve been wanded (and so has everyone else) at every event Palin attended since the nomination.

  9. Chaim says:

Well, SP showed up after all, and she and Miller were photographed in a mutually-endorsing hug. According to the Alaska Dispatch,

“Miller, who had said repeatedly that he wanted to talk about the “issues,” found himself up against the issue no candidate really likes to talk about — the candidate himself.

“So with his poll numbers falling, Miller turned to old pal Palin and a gang of others Thursday in the hopes that celebrity might at this point be a better sales tactic than substance.

“You’re not getting the truth from the lamestream media,” Palin said to some of the biggest applause of the night.

“Miller is so qualified to be senator “are we even fit to tie his combat boots,” she added.

Pardon me while I vomit. Neither of you self-serving liars is fit to lick any footwear I own.

    • LibertyLover says:

And neither are fit to allude to our military in any way.

    • Bretta says:

I honestly wonder how he can show his face in public.

    • beth says:

Makes me right ill to know some people figure military service *automatically* confers integrity, intelligence, ethics, honor, sanity…

Don’t get me wrong, I do loves me some military folk!, but this notion that a person –just because they’ve been in the military– can never, ever, ever! be dishonorable, is absolutely nuts! If $arah’d just shut her yap long enough to actually hear *what* her darling Joe has done to disgrace himself, the law profession, *and* the military, maybe she’d figure out what a truly sneaky, sleezy, cheezy little boy he really is. Hell, if $arah could remember what her old pal McCain said and did during *her* fail to ‘win the White House’ (and since), she’d *know* that “military honor” is *not* automatic or life-long…it has to be earned AND maintained.

By her touting Miller’s ‘military honor’, she is stomping all over the true military honor Mr. beth and millions of others of current and former military have *rightfully* earned and faithfully maintain. She isn’t even fit to utter those two words, military and honor, together — she is clueless as to what they really mean. She pi55es me off. Royally! beth.

    • tigerwine says:

“Fit to tie his combat boots?” It seems to me that we don’t know if his boots were even in combat, or why he left the service early. Chaim – please pass the barf bag!

  10. Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

Thanks for the emergency plan. I was starting to get worried. 🙂

  11. Lacy Lady says:

Just watched MSNBC —-Harry Reid talking about Sharon Angle!!!!! WHEW!!!!! She is one scary bitch!!

  12. Zyxomma says:

Ahhhhh, back at The Mudflats!! Feels good. Emergency plan noted. When I saw the article at HuffPo, I knew why we were having server problems.

Health and peace. Looking forward to Saturday!! And looking forward more to Scott McAdams, the Junior Senator from the Great State of Alaska!!!

  13. Laurie says:

I knew it must be something big when Mudflats was busy after about 6 tries this morning. Finally, I saw the tremendous news in the cross post at The Huff. Go Scott!! I have to admit that I was hoping the reason was a Palin implosion. I know it’s coming. It’s only a matter of time.

Found a small mention of the Miller rally at the Alaska Dispatch tonight. They mentioned it was after 8, Palin was still not there and people were starting to leave. They had 3 to 4 hundred people. Seems like a pretty small turnout for the princess and her special guests in her own backyard. The one and only comment about pay-lin not being there yet was priceless: “the check must not have cleared”.

  14. Chaim says:

Glad the website was just overloaded — I tried a couple of times today and like others was worried about “dirty tricks.”

Just visited Alaska Dispatch, covering the Miller rally at which Palin was going to appear. The update states that “as of 8:07 p.m., Sarah Palin had not appeared. Some people were starting to leave.” AD estimates 300-350 people there. I don’t know how many would normally show up in Anchorage for something like this, but it sounds like underwhelming support for “Joe the Plummeter,” and I wish I could take credit for that nickname.

  15. trishSWFL says:

I had tried several times to get here today, and nothing! I knew the server must have crashed. Never thought about trying the old site, even though I never deleted it from bookmarks. Thanks AKM, now I’ll know to try that next time the ‘flats is crashed.

Rally4Sanity: I wish I could go…will be watching, and will be with you all in heart and in spirit!

    • bubbles says:

((((((Trish)))))) i wish you could come to DC. i will miss you and think of you. one day, little pup, we will meet.

  16. TX SMR says:

Funniest take on the joe liar thing that I have read to date. If you can handle fresh language (I’m being diplomatic), this is absolutely great:

    http://tbogg.firedoglake.com/2010/10/26/douchey-joe-miller-was-not-having-any-fun-in-anchorage-so-he-got-firedquit/

oceanofpee have started some weird write-in thing? Those people are nuts.

  17. Elizabeth says:

Done, and thanks! This morning was another one of “those” days. I was thinking, its great AKM is getting to be so popular, but I want to get through! selfish of me, huh?

  18. A Fan From Chicago says:

AKM– the past few days in Alaska have reminded me of the great Lloyd Bridges lines from the movie “Airplane.” When things got especially out of hand in the air traffic control tower he said said at various times:

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to give up smoking.”

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.”

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.”

I’m sure you thought you had a really long trip to prepare for to get to Washington for the Rally. Then came Joe Miller’s denials, and then his acknowledgement of wrong doing, then the proof, then the debate, then the poll numbers, then the court decisions about write-ins . Then Rachael Maddow comes to town. Then Sarah on the cover of New York Magazine. Then Entertainment Tonight. Then Rove and Brock take her to the woodshed. Then she says it doesn’t matter and she’s ready to serve.

Have a great time in Washington.

    • Polly says:

AND…. Have you read the latest crazy- made me laugh – thing happening?

56 people signed up to be write-in candidates here in Alaska.

      http://community.adn.com/adn/node/154002

      • seattlefan says:

C4P instigated that whole crazy campaign. I won’t link them here but if you want to see what they did go over there and read about it. They are so juvenile. I wonder if what they did is legal or ethical since they “represent” Palin and she endorsed Miller.

      • Alaska Pi says:

yes- great big gut busting laugh!
        Have needed that!
roll on the floor laughing until I almost break a rib laughing…

      • seattlefan says:

I commented to you and it went to moderation. I’ll try again:

Peezoo instigated that whole crazy campaign. I won’t link them here but if you want to see what they did go over there and read about it. They are so juvenile. I wonder if what they did is legal or ethical since they “represent” Palin and she endorsed Miller.

        • Alaska Pi says:

None of it really matters as people can still, and have always been able to vote for a write in without resorting to a list for help (spell cheating) and their votes will not be sequestered pending final decision by court.
They can use their sample ballot or any number of ways to prepare themselves which don’t end up with the state in the role of electioneering-in-the-name-of-fairness with the stoopid lists…
I don’t care why they did it- the list is unacceptable in any way shape or form . Even juvenile comic relief from PZ ( I like that name ! ) is welcome at this point…

      • fishingmamma says:

A friend and I were talking about the political mess here. He told me about a big bank that was investing in Apartheid South Africa (I know, it was a long time ago), and they wanted to protest. So they had people go in all day long and open bank accounts, then close them the next day. There was a steady stream, for days, costing the bank tons of money. It was funny, it was clever, it was targeted, and it was effective.

Just like this. People are sending a very clear message, in a very clever way. I hope the state is paying attention.

        • Bretta says:

I thought it was a good idea, as far as civil disobedience goes. Beats stomping women on their heads.

  19. Lower48 says:

    Got it.

  20. Evelyn says:

Missed all of you today. I thought the Miller-thugs might have gotten to our beloved and brave AKM.
    Thanks for the alternate link.

  21. beth says:

AKM — My family thanks you a thousand-times over for the emergency link…they do not like having a grump-pot grump-potting around, and that is certainly what I am when I’m unable to get my ‘flats ‘fix.’ Is it any wonder I get that way? I mean what other site, among other things, pays homage to an actor the way you’ve done… beth.

  22. Moose Pucky says:

Got the Emergency Plan backup bookmarked. Thanks.

Someone had withdrawals so bad today, they created their own Emergency Meet-up Site on KOS.

Alaska News So Hot and Breaking, Mudflats is Down

  23. seattlefan says:

Is anyone going to be at the Joe Miller lovefest tonight in Anchorage? Is there any live blogging, news coverage, etc?

  24. tallimat says:

    My first crush was Dano.

When the search feature of Internet was getting started (post DOS), Dano was my first search. I was hoping to find his fan club.

    R.I.P. James MacArthur.

  25. Mudbug says:

You do know that Dano died today, right? He was 72.

    • Elizabeth says:

No, I didn’t. I’m sorry, I really liked that program.

    • mpb says:

I believe Dano was the sidekick. Helen Hayes’ son was the lead detective. Of course, most of us knew him from the Disney movie (Light in the Forest, I believe)

  26. cg says:

    What was the Sanity Rally(s)?
I’m in Alaska. I have the ability to get to things. So far, I seem to have missed stuff that was happening when and where it would have been very convenient for me to get there and lend support. It’s not just me, either. There’s quite a few of us with kids to pick up and work commitments, but WOULD go to these things and plan intentionally, because it’s critical!

The weak link is finding out that something is happening. Any chance of Alaska blogs posting a quick simple schedule of stuff happening between now and Nov. 2?
It might be too late, but maybe not. On the other hand, perhaps these events and activities are invitation-only and not public? If that’s the case, no problem.

  27. justafarmer says:

ty AKM! took me more than 10 hours to get to the Flats today.
    Backup plans are ALWAYS great!

  28. ks sunflower says:

Thanks! It will sure relieve anxiety that this site has come under attack from cyberpunks. It is good that the reason that the site gets swamped because of its excellent content and a breaking story, but frustrating for those of us whose day is somehow incomplete unless we check in to see what you or your guests have posted and what comments our fellow mudpups have made. Our brains are geared to working at a higher calibration because of this site.

So thanks again for making the emergency plan. It’s nice to have a safety net!

As for Dano – I will miss him as well. Glad we have reruns through which to enjoy his talent.

  29. seattlefan says:

Done and Thanks for that! I tried all day long to get on your site with no success. If and when anything HUGE happens, we need to be able to get here. This is like my family’s “earthquake/volcano emergency plan”. It’ always good to have a contingency plan. If we aren’t together when it happens we have a set place to meet no matter how long it takes. 🙂

  30. Kath the Scrappy says:

Done. Good work & thinking ahead! With your wacky elections coming into play, you just know the rest of the country is going to be racing to Mudflats to see results.

  31. OhioNana says:

I found this title ironic as I just heard that James MacArthur, the person who made the line “Book him,
    Dano” died today.

Thanks for all your great work..keep it up. I think the fact you are getting so many hits shows there is a real interest in what is going on up there.

  32. TheRubberRoomHotel says:

    Thanks AKM!

  33. NEO says:

done, i like having an emergency plan.

  34. UgaVic says:

Is done and now the ‘family’ plan is ‘in the book’!!

  35. psminidivapa says:

Done! Was in a panic all day b/c of Sanity Rally last minute instructions. Kudos for HufPo story. See you on Saturday!
