Open Thread – Boots on the Ground in D.C.

I arrived a little bedraggled, but happy in Washington D.C. tonight. I’m not even pretending to try to adjust to the time difference so tomorrow should be interesting.  If you see someone on TV napping in the middle of the mall, it just might be me.

My day started long ago, and as I arrived bleary-eyed at the airport and got on the security line I was standing behind a guy with a 1/2 beard and more hair gel than ought to be legal. I wondered to myself if this was going to be a new “thing” and if guys were going to start looking like Joe Miller.  Then I realized it WAS Joe Miller.  Ah, yes.  Alaska is a very small town.  But back to sanity…

I’ll be Tweeting from the event, so if you want to hear about the day’s events as they unfold, you can follow me at www.twitter.com/mudflats and if you’re already on Twitter following me, you’ll want to check out the hashtag #rally4sanity which will take you to all the tweets from those who are utilizing the hashtag.

I hope you all have a very sane day, wherever you are.

Good night, Mudflatters. And by good night, I mean good morning… I think.

    Wow. He needs some help.

I have talked to some people who have seen him in action in the courtroom and they describe him as a “Prima donna” and a “drama king/queen”.

He seems to fit right in with $ Payme. She seems to have had some of the same paranoia as well as delusions of grandeur.

It is interesting that so many people in Alaska are fearful of her and her vindictiveness and yet he chose to align himself with her. Alaska is such a small town that one can easily get blackballed by employers for speaking out. In that sense I understand some of the paranoia on the part of people who insist upon being cited anonymously, however, this case is so extreme….

  2. A Fan From Chicago says:

On the day that people rallied to restore sanity, this is a story of someone who seems to have gone round the bend. Alaska, Joe Miller is nutty as a fruit cake. And down right scarey. Please stop him on Tuesday.

  3. Some nice images showed up on the Facebook page for the National Museum of the American Indian. They had a bird’s eye view of the stage. They also took some long range shots of the crowd from a different angle than most of those I have seen so far. The place was PACKED. yeah!

  4. Moose Pucky says:

The Guardian is reporting easily one quarter million folks there.

  5. slipstream says:

Okay . . . has sanity been restored yet?

    Just checking.

  6. Tom the Bunny says:

On this WaPo web site, slide #26- Alaskans for Sanity! See, we do exist!

  7. LoveMyDogs says:

Kim: If you go to the forum you can find out where the DC mudstock is happening and meet AKM in person.

  8. Kimosabe says:

I was there! Holy smokes, what a crowd! The signs and costumes were amazing (can I upload pcs somehow?). I asked two people wearing yellow scarves if they were Mudpups, and they looked it me as if I didn’t belong at a sanity rally.

  9. Lee323 says:

Everyone fired up about returning sanity to the political debate?

If so, email David Ford at ABC news (link below) to express your disgust at ABC using Andrew Breitbart as a political commentator for election night, Nov. 2!…….Yes, THAT Andrew Breitbart. IT’S INSANE!

The public deserves more respect than having this despicable liar posing as a pundit!

  10. Hello everybody- today the same thing for me was to watch from my living room in my fuzzy house coat. Go sanity. 🙂

  11. Moose Pucky says:

Have fun in D.C. Is the sun shining there as it is here today?

Guess we’re just going to have to vote for sanity at all levels–
from the Supreme Court on down to state legislative seats.

  12. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Best sign I’ve seen so far (there are great ones!):

    I Can Spell (two sided)

  13. Laurie says:

Watching rally online. I believe God is waving the flags on the mall today.

  14. Diane says:

Why would miller leave the state this close to the election?
    Looking for a new home?

  15. JR says:

A friend of mine posted this on her Facebook wall earlier this morning, thought y’all might enjoy it. One of those goofy animated conversations in which a Teabagger tries to explain how our freedoms are being attacked:

    Something to think about…
Been thinking about it a lot since tea party madness has spread…

  17. pacos_gal says:

Comedy Central by 11am, reports over 200,000 people at the mall in DC. 10,000 people on 200 buses from NYC via Huff Post.
    Wow, this is great!!
Everyone seems to be having a fabulous time.

  18. ValleyIndependent says:

Wasilla Rally to Restore Sanity starts at 8am – live feed to DC and live music. It should be a blast! Come join the fun at the Wasilla MIddle School gym. Can’t get there at 8? No worries – we’ll be there until 11. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rally-to-Restore-Sanity-Wasilla-Alaska/156279901063275

live stream feed of rally from 12 – 3pm ET

  20. Buffalogal says:

Following the twitter posts over on #Rally4Sanity and saw some good signs:

    “Think outside the Fox ”

“Palin , O’Donnell, Bachmann? I burned my bra for this ?!”

“Paul Revere was an anchor baby ”

” Gay ? Sure. Fine by me ”

    ” I’m pretty sure you’re not Hilter”

and “Hyperbole is murdering America ”

The posts are coming in so fast! Everyone is in good spirits. No one is calling for revolution. The pics show quite a crowd already. Hope they are able to get some good arial photos for a decent head count.

Off to read the posts on the forum !

    • pacos_gal says:

did you see the pics of the crowd this morning?!
      http://thedeadline.tumblr.com/

      • pacos_gal says:

Reports of people dressed up as zombies and some in Star Trek attire at rally4sanity. Got to love the sane!

        • dreamgirl says:

Oh that’s funny. Any sheep wrapped in flags with crucifixes branded/tattooed on ’em holding misspelled signs (mispeld sighns)?

      • Buffalogal says:

Can’t wait to see photos later this afternoon. I wonder how the bots and Beckers are spinning this to themselves ? I’m sure Soros $$ will find its way in to the spewing.

        • Bretta says:

Borowitz said Fox reported seven people were at the rally. Went on to point out the pictures of the mall were of 12 hours before the start. He’s hilarious.

I read the count was about 250,000.

Three times more than the beck thing or the 9/12 teabagger thing.

  21. pacos_gal says:

More trains were added from Baltimore to DC as there are so many people showing up to go to rally.

If you are watching for mudpups on tv today, remember the scarfs are black and yellow.

  22. Alaska Pi says:

    Yay!
Waiting to hear from mudpups in DC!
    Waiting to hear from AKM!

  23. pacos_gal says:

Mudpups are hitting the ground running. Some are on their way now, others are already on site.

Gryphen had dinner with Malia Litman last night after her book signing. Very cool. AKM got to her hotel escorted by mudpup fawnskin and hubs. Forty Watt is on her way this morning with I am assuming, her yellow gogo boots on.

I understand there was a whole plane full of people from Dallas that landed to jeers of restoring sanity in DC.

The buses from NYC left at 5am as scheduled. Some were wrapped up (chilly) others dressed to then nines (Ariana Huffington looked spiffy we here).

Updates from the rally may be found here on the forum:
    https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php?topic=10745.new;topicseen#new

Check in and drop a line to all our mudpups on the ground who will be checking in and leaving updates throughout the day.

    • pacos_gal says:

eeeek…the plane landed to CHEERS not jeers. (refill of coffee cup needed Pronto!)

  24. jimzmum says:

Have a wonderful time. I will be watching and looking for Mudpup yellow!

  25. benlomond2 says:

Looks like the weather will be decent in DC- cool and cloudy…as for Joe, maybe he’s doing a Sheryl Angle ans is escaping from the pesky press with all their pesky questions….

  26. thatcrowwoman says:

Good morning from Orlando, mudpeeps, from my union cyber cafe.

I’m restoring sanity with you all in spirit, while Brian and I finish up our Union business before hitting the road for 7 hours northwest…but since we cross one time zone, it’ll only feel like 6 hours, right? Right??

Alex Sink will be speaking to us this morning, speaking of restoring sanity. We heard from Kendrick Meek yesterday morning (I already voted for him!) and from Governor Senator-Wannabe Charlie Crist yesterday afternoon.

Interesting times we’re living in, eh?

    much love,
thatcrowwoman (not afraid, but sane? well, I can see it from here!)

  27. Paula says:

I didn’t go, as I will be in DC next week. Have a wonderful time!

  28. Baker's Dozen says:

Revealed! The schedule for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Election-2010/Vox-News/2010/1027/Revealed-schedule-for-Rally-to-Restore-Sanity-and-or-Fear

  29. Califpat says:

First, rest AKM and then meet all our wonderful Mudpups and enjoy!! But at the same time, all you Pups be boots on the ground so we know who you met, where you went, and how much fun you had!!! I am so nosy, I know but I am excited for you Pups! At the same time, we want pictures!!! Have much fun and tell us all about it.Just waiting!!!!!

  30. stef g. says:

Never have a weasel trap on you when it would be handy.

  31. Oh, and AKM, HAVE A FREAKIN’ BLAST!!!!!!

BTW, where do you think Miller was going?

  32. If the weather is clear, I may go to the Wasilla rally. If not, the one at UAA it is!

Here is the AK Supreme Court Decision for those who haven’t seen it yet…Div. of Elections gets to keep their list:

    http://media.adn.com/smedia/2010/10/29/18/AK001.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf

However, voters cannot take it in the booth with them, there are no political parties on and a voter who “asks for assistance” must be specific…as in have some actual issue.

I’ll write about it tomorrow unless Legal Eagle gets to it first. I already did a big post for the AM on Scott’s full page Friday ad in the ADN.

    • Moose Pucky says:

This decision disregards the facts of how the list was used, that updates and corrections have not been provided in a timely manner, and leaves the door open for other abuses and ambiguities at the polls, and places a kind of trust in the Div. of Elections that will lead to further abuses.

I am deeply disappointed to learn this about Alaska’s Supreme Court.

  33. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

AKM – time zones don’t matter. Say that ten times while clicking your heels together. It works for me! Have so much fun that you can’t stand it anymore!

  34. Terpsichore says:

Well, unless I chicken out, I’m going to take my bari sax and my piccolo (for the size contrast) to the satellite rally in Fort Lauderdale tomorrow and play some patriotic tunes.

I might have to write the tune names and the key I’m doing them in on my hand …

Seriously, I think I’m spending more time planning this than SP spends on the speeches she gets paid thousands of $$ for.

Supposedly our little rally will be able to be seen from The Elbo Room cam:

    http://www.elboroom.com/page/roof-cam

That’s tomorrow, (or later today?) 12-3pm Sat. 10/30
