OK, back in ancient times, an event like this would throw the masses into mass hysteria. I just think the timing is interesting, considering that the world is supposedly supposed to end (if you believe the Mayans) in 2012. So is this event the beginning of the end? Or Just an interesting little quirky kinda neat scientific coincidence?

We’re only a few days away from a Happy Solstice, y’all. Happy dance for longer days!

    • jojobo1 says:

I have lived thru to many years of end years time to believe in any of that stuff. i think if there will be and end no one will know till it happens and some might be surprised where they end up even thought they claim to be christian, they talk the talk but do not walk the walk.

    • AKPetMom says:

Happy Solstice, a few days in advance. And yes, there are those that prescribe to the latest end times philosophy, be it christian or mayan or the people that think we’re done for next May.

However, there is solid scientific evidence that our Sun, old Sol, will keep shining for another 5 billion years. At about 4 billion it will become a red giant that will consume little old Earth. The Earth will exist as a planet until that time.

However, mankind may find a method to eliminate us, as a species. It probably won’t happen for another few hundred years, but we won’t last. At least Earth will, and will most likely be better off without our kind.

  4. Zyxomma says:

I’d like you all to see what I got in the mail from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY):

    “Dear [Zyxomma],

I’ve got some wonderful news! The Senate has just voted to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Finally, we have overturned the ban on openly gay men and women serving in our military. Not only does DADT prevent our brave LGBT servicemen and women from serving their country freely and truthfully, but it poses a threat to the readiness of our armed forces and stands in direct opposition to the equality and fairness that America stands for.

It’s been a long, hard road, and I couldn’t have done it without your support. Yes, I’ve always known that the American people are overwhelmingly in favor of repeal. But you’ve given me what no poll ever could – the inspiration and encouragement to keep pressing on.

What a great feeling it is to know that you’ve accomplished a goal that will literally change the lives of thousands of people. But we’re not done yet.

The Senate still has some very important business to finish before we adjourn for the year. Next week, I’m aiming for a Christmas miracle to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act so we can finally fulfill the moral obligation we have to our 9/11 heroes and provide them with the health care they need.

Whether I’m fighting for gay and lesbian servicemembers or for our 9/11 heroes, I can’t tell you how much it means to have you by my side.

As we approach the final days of this Congress, I’ll be in touch to update you on our ongoing progress.

    All the best,
    Kirsten”

  6. bubbles says:

this my friends, is an historic day. this is why i am forever glad we got an intelligent man; a patient man sitting in the oval office: and Lisa Murkowski done a good thing. make no mistake this vote was an acknowledgement and a thank you to those who sent her back to Washington
    ____________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 63-33 on Saturday to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, defeating a 17-year policy of banning gay and lesbian service members from serving openly in the military.

Five Republicans crossed the aisle to vote against the policy: Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio).

The Senate vote is a vindication of Obama’s decision to push for congressional repeal as opposed to unilateral executive action, though activists note he could have done both. The Senate will make a final vote on ending the policy at 3 p.m.

“The important thing today is that 63 senators were on the right side of history,” Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, told HuffPost, adding he sees the bill as a “stepping stone to further advances for the gay and lesbian community.”

      :] ((applauding wildly))

What a great Christmas present to the country and to the members of the military who have been hurt by this policy. Thank you to all the members of Congress on both sides who voted for this bill and for our President who pushed to make it happen. It’s long overdue but I’m grateful that it will finally be repealed.

    • Joe Solmonese is the coolest of guys…! I bet tomorrow morning, the channels will be going nutz over DADT….

Don’t ask Don’t tell could have been a good thing (as in irrelevent to serving). Until it became a dirty secret, a reason to fire people. It backfired

So tired – my kitty Pippin lost use of his back legs yesterday. He isn’t in pain at all and has been blind for over a year. He doesn’t use a litter box. potties outside – he let’s me move his legs to potty but I don’t know how long he will be okay. He is purring and loving his mama. I scratch the snow with him (o:…..)o:

I will not let him suffer, he will be 17 next Spring. I don’t want to have to put him down especially before Christmas. Please pray in your own way for strength for much more than me and my Pippin.

i don’t watch Fox news but happened to see an article on Huffpo about Shep Smith’s show dedicated to the first responders on 9/11. i have to say that Shep is the only person from that non-news organization that i would watch he he ever left to work at another station. i saw him one day on the uptown ‘F’ train. i tweaked a smile at him and he tweaked me back.( tweak smile is a brief sideways sort of almost smile that we New Yorkers give to personalities we meet ’cause it ain’t cool to drool.) here is some of what he said:
    ______________________________________________________________________________
“Who’s going to hold these people’s feet to the fire? We’re able to put a 52 story building so far down there at Ground Zero, we’re able to pay for tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them and it’s not going to stimulate the economy. But we can’t give health care to Ground Zero first responders who ran right into the fire? Went down there to save people? Do people know what this city was like that day? People were walking over bridges, they were covered in ash, they were running for their lives, they were crying, their family members were dead. And these people ran to Ground Zero to save people’s lives. And we’re not going to even give them medicine for the illnesses they got down there? It’s disgusting, it’s a national disgrace, it’s a shame and everybody who voted against should have to stand up and account for himself or herself.”

good on you Shep. good on you.

      “it’s a national disgrace” :*-(

    • frsbdg says:

Sorry to say though, he never ONCE mentioned that it was REPUBLICANS who are blocking this bill. He just kept saying “Congress” as if the Dems had something to do with it, too. So I can’t give Smith a tip of the hat on this one.

      • sarafina says:

Agreed, frsbdg. Why didn’t he call out some of the shameful individuals by name? The roll call is available.

    • leenie17 says:

Anyone who blocks this bill or votes against it should be mortally ashamed to ever show their face in public again. It’s truly despicable that the very same people who are fighting this legislation are the ones who wrapped themselves in the flag and gnashed their teeth about how the NYC Islamic community center is such a dishonor to the memories of those who died.

Many of the people who tragically died that day were given no choice and were killed as a function of where they happened to be at the time. The first responders, however, made the conscious decision to go into the chaos to try and save lives. To imply that tax cuts for the wealthy or any other legislation is more important than providing them with basic health care is despicable. These funds should have been approved years ago and to hold them up any longer is a crime.

I am grateful to Jon Stewart and Shep Smith and any other members of the media who continues to shine a spotlight on this issue and keep up pressure on Congress to pass this bill.

    • I do like him, but I wonder why he stays with Fox when he could get a job anywhere else? It just seems that if he had real integrity he wouldn’t keep working for and with people who are so bent on making up their own truth. And sometimes, I’ve seen clips of him sitting with all the others at Fox that wouldn’t know honest reporting if it slapped them in the face. So, I have to wonder about just who he is and what his motives are.

      • bubbles says:

i wonder too. i can’t make sense of it and since i don’t watch Fox i ‘ll probably never know. i will say though that has the same sour expression in person as he does on TV. so maybe that’s what it is.

        • leenie17 says:

“has the same sour expression in person as he does on TV”

If you had to go to work every day every day at Faux, wouldn’t you have a sour expression too? You couldn’t pay me enough to spend my time in a place like that. Being around all that negativity and hate has GOT to just sap your energy.

      • Dagian says:

    • jojobo1 says:

But people are right he does not say that it is the republicans holding this up.He just says it is wrong to hold it up while not mentioning the names of those who voted against it.

    • Thank you for that. Good to know that my fondness for Shep is not misplaced…He’s the only one at Fox that I like..!

Heh. Good Saturday morning/afternoon/evening, all. This is my first post, although I have been following this blog for a long time. And enjoying it and the comments immensely. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, have never lived in Alaska, but have long been fascinated by the enchantment of The Great White North. As a proud possessor of both Canadian AND American citizenship, I hope my comments are accepted. Notice, I didn’t say Politically Correct, just accepted! Or not. Also too.

The main reason for this post is to ask – did anyone else notice the guy in the background of the “turkeys draining” picture. Hm now might that be a version of the one finger salute?? Just askin’.
    Maybe I need new glasses.

BREAKING STORY – In about 10 minutes the DADT vote is going to happen in Senate – that will be 11:05 AM CDT.

Call Senator Check Into Cash Corker (R-TN) and let him KNOW that he will not be re-elected in Tennessee in 2012 IF he blocks the START treaty AFTER DADT passes- which it WILL, FINALLY, and he has threatened START – What a nasty hatefilled JERK.

Bob Corker – Hater of All Americans except the WEALTHY:

Yea!!!! Finally justice for so many of our troops.

      • twain12 says:

        i’m so happy !!!!!!

      • Baker's Dozen says:

It’s justice for all our troops. No one should have to serve with people who have things to hide, and no one should have to hide who they are. Now, the military can concentrate this energy they’ve used to kick out perfectly good military personnel to actually police people that are doing something wrong and harming our country.
I mean, is it more demoralizing and worse for the troops to serve with a gay, or to serve with an incompetent or someone who enjoys killing and torture or who would turn and run, or give aide to the enemy? This whole thing, and with our country as a whole, just takes our minds off of what’s really important by making up fake emergencies. The modern day version of cry wolf.

  13. leenie17 says:

I’m trying very hard to find a silver lining in the latest flush of political insanity.

The one positive thing I’m seeing since the recent election gave the Republicans a false sense of their own importance is that they’re no longer hiding their true motives. In years past, they would have supported or tried to defeat legislation based on what most benefited themselves and their small posse of corporate supporters, but they at least tried to hide their sleazy goals. Now they’re proudly standing up and admitting that they have absolutely no interest in helping any group of people who doesn’t have the ability to heavily contribute to their campaign coffers.

I was shocked to read about some of the latest bills they have blocked or voted against. One, of course, is the Zadroga bill for 9/11 responders which, thankfully, Jon Stewart has been loudly calling them on. One of the newest and most incomprehensible for them to defend is the vote against the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010; a bill that would “ensure that child marriage is recognized as a human rights violation, and develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such marriages around the world.” Some Republicans falsely claimed it would add to the deficit while others claimed, wrongly, that it might funnel money into government programs that support ab@rtion and family planning. Apparently, they have no concerns about 12-year-old girls being subjected to domestic violence, sexual abuse and a life of poverty.

Republicans, through these last few weeks, have provided incontrovertible proof that their ONLY concern is helping the wealthy retain more of their wealth. They proudly stand AGAINST 9/11 first responders, child brides, the unemployed, nuclear safety, equal rights, the middle class and development of new technology (such as high speed rail). We can only hope that the Democrats learn how to use these disgusting displays of their complete lack of humanity against them in the next election. AND that the American people recognize that the Republican party is the LAST party that wants to make life better for them and their children.

Have you seen this column by Paul Krugman?

      http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/17/opinion/17krugman.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

The Nobel laureate in economics explains it all for us.

      • leenie17 says:

I don’t always agree with Krugman, but he knows his stuff. Did you ever notice how most of the big problems we’ve faced in the past couple of decades were directly caused by deregulation or the failure of the government or industry to enforce the existing regulations?

        – the economic meltdown
        – the Gulf oil spill
        – repeated instances of widespread food contamination
        – dangerous chemicals found in toys, pet food, baby products
        – damage caused by Katrina as a result of substandard levee construction
        – massive chemical leaks in Texas
        – military fatalities in the Middle East caused by substandard construction
        – military fatalities caused by substandard equipment and vehicles
        – and so on and so on…

Yeah, let’s just get rid of all them pesky gubment reg-yoo-lay-shuns and see how much better we live. Of course, we likely won’t live as long, but we’ll have our ‘Freeeedumm’!!!

        • A fan from CA says:

Ever since Reagan started with the “small government” meme, the R’s have been systematically disassembling our society. It is the death of government by thousands of small cuts.

The PR campaign has been very successful at convincing many that the government can’t do anything right and that the government is “them” rather than us.

I think it might be time to remind everyone that the government is Us, we the people, all the people. We can demand safe food, fewer nukes in the world, reasonable prices for health insurance, protection of our water supplies and that the rich pay a fair share of supporting the government. Etc, etc, etc.

          • I looked up Raygun’s small gov’t non-sense. He cut taxes for the rich from 70% to 28% and National debt went from 700billion dollars to 3 trillion dollars. Gwb tried the same policies with even worse results.I’m happy to report that the richest Americans did very well under both Rethuglican Potus, the rest of America-not so much.

        • Zyxomma says:

Yes, leenie17, I have noticed. How about those zero-bid Halliburton showers in Iraq electrocuting our troops? Because privatization is so much better than wasting our soldiers’ time building things.

          • leenie17 says:

The Halliburton showers were what I was referring to with ” military fatalities in the Middle East caused by substandard construction”.

Thank you once again, Dick Cheney. What a legacy of destruction and hate that man left behind!

    • Dagian says:

Unless things have changed dramatically for the better since I last looked, the US is one of the few POWERFUL countries that has NOT signed the treaty making the sex trafficking trade illegal (children & women?).

      *heaves sigh*

  14. I see the plot thickening,oh,the horror people endure at Christmas time. Is there no hope? Will a “rill” American hero show up on time to stop this madness? Only six more days to endure(or shop)Please, the suspense is killing me(sorry,no offense turkeys). Make it stop. I can’t run away,I’m housebound. Insert Howard Dean shriek here.

  15. leenie17 says:

The folks at Faux News are getting their knickers in a knot over a recent poll by World Public Opinion that shows that regular Faux viewers are (be prepared for a shock) less informed about political issues than viewers of other news sources.

“As Mark Howard at AlterNet notes, this data coincides with results of previous surveys finding that Fox News viewers are more misinformed about public policy issues. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll out last year found that Fox News viewers were overwhelmingly misinformed about health care reform proposals. A 2008 Pew study ranked Fox News last in the number of “high knowledge” viewers and a 2007 Pew poll ranked Fox viewers as the least knowledgable about national and international affairs.”

    http://thinkprogress.org/2010/12/16/poll-fox-news-misinformation/

Typically, Faux is not denying the poll findings themselves, but instead attacking the university that sponsors the program that conducted the poll, saying that the University of Maryland is just a party school. Apparently, if some students who attend the school like to sow their wild oats, you shouldn’t pay any attention to results that just confirm what several other studies done by other organizations have already shown!

    • beth says:

LOL — love it! By going after the source, the fine folks at FOX, yet once again, show how they consistently fail to even semi-accurately and semi-truthfully inform their audience on/of the actual issue at hand. What a hoot — their spin-attack of the messenger unequivocally proves the results of the poll(s)! Oh, the irony… beth.

    • Dagian says:

University of Maryland has long since shed its “just a party school” image. Like…shortly after Len Bias’s death. Believe me, the days when ANYONE who graduated a Maryland high school had a guaranteed berth at UMd are ancient history.

In other words, Fox is attacking the messenger, rather than learning anything from the message. Quelle surprise!

    • NEO says:

Yes, no surprise here. Faux news has it’s own agenda. I have family that watch it, we can’t have any conversation about politics.

  16. OMG says:

This Washington Post column was written by the winner of the Post’s pundit contest and I can see why he won. Not only is he an excellent writer, but he makes good points in this piece about Obama’s recent compromise in the tax bill.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/17/AR2010121705533.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

    • I read the article, and must say,Imust be a proffessional Liberal or something. I don’t like it when Obama “capitulates”.With the new tax deal done- can someone tell me what did the Right give up? Their form of compromise is making Dems fall in line with Repubs.

      • BMA says:

Pretty brilliant move on the president’s part. He actually made the Republicans do the one thing they vowed they wouldn’t do, and that’s legislate. Plus, his goal from the start was bipartisan cooperation, which happened. If the Democrats were so keen on tax cuts for the middle class only and if Americans truly cared, then the bill would have been passed six months ago and the rich would have had to suffer with “higher taxes.” The president outfoxed the Republicans by getting them to support a second stimulus package. What will be interesting is when the Republicans have to face continuing the payroll tax holiday or continuing the tax cut for the rich. Brilliant strategy, Mr. President.

        • A fan from CA says:

I’m with you. We’ve no got 2 years to remind the voters that R’s only fought for tax gifts for the rich. They were willing to throw the middle class under the bus unless the rich got huge tax breaks paid for with borrowed money.

          • North of the Range says:

And the cuts expire again in 2012, isn’t that right? So in order to keep tax rates for the ultra-rich from going up then, the Rs will have to take the same position of “no consideration for the rest of you until we get this.” During a Presidential election year, when more people are listening. And they will have just been on record as holding everyone else “hostage” to get it in 2010.

Although I was unhappy because this legislation gives the people who least needed a break the biggest per capita break of anyone, perhaps the scenario will play out better than we think.

Hilarious Gail Collins’ stocking stuffer column! She had such great zingers. Here’s a favorite:

“Sarah Palin is out with ‘America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag.’ One of the reflections missing is who did the writing. You have to get to the very end of the book, and work your way through the acknowledgements of Palin’s family, friends, our veterans, ‘Common-Sense Constitutionalists,’ ‘Prayer Warriors’ and her lawyer before she notes that conservative speechwriter Jessica Gavora did ‘most important work’ on the tome.”

Hey Silly Sarah maybe your two older girls Bristol and Willow should stop eating cookies and instead sing Christmas carols, it is less fattening. If they follow Mrs. Obama’s advice instead of your advice maybe your two girls would not look like two overly fed pigs looking for their next meals.

Your girls really got fat, life must be good in the Palin compound with mommy’s gone all month and the kids are left to fend for themselves. Silly Sarah is such a wonderful mother and role model for families every where – NOT!

There is a creature outside my study window yargling this morning. Yes, yargling. I have no idea what it is, and it won’t be light for a while. It is a contented-sounding yargle, not a danger or hurt yargle. Just a “nice Saturday morning in the neighborhood” yargle. Probably a blood-sucking zombie coyote waiting to rip my throat when I go get the paper. Or not.

Thank you for the newest verse! I am loving the fun of finding a new one every day.

Please make sure you let us know what the creature is and don’t leave us in suspense!

I’ve never, to my best recollection, heard ‘yargling’, but I can certainly imagine what it must sound like. I suspect it must be rather disconcerting to hear such an odd and unidentifiable sound in the dark of night!

We had a neighborhood cat that yargled. There’s no mistaking a yargle once you’ve heard it. It can’t be called anything else.

Hope you got to discover what yours was, Jimzmum. We’d like to know!

Hey Leenie – it’s warmed up to 22 degrees. Woohoo!

I don’t know how to turn this into a Christmas carol…maybe it would work in another language. From another planet.

    First!

OK, I know I’m in trouble now. But I’ll be forgiven by Christmas, right? The vision which “draining” brings to my mind is Sarah’s humanity, so make that 7 turkeys!
