Open Thread – Deep Sea Fish with Swivel Eyes and Transparent Head!
Who doesn’t love a good weird-looking deep sea fish? (looks around and sees no hand raised) That’s right, we all do. This fish is particularly interesting as it has two swively tubular eyes, which seem to come in very handy. And the eyes aren’t where you think they are. They aren’t the dark spots that look filled with ennui. Those are actually more like nostrils. The eyes are hidden behind the green hood-like appendages. Oh, and then there’s the transparent head. Enjoy the video!
Never thought about bear meat but fter seeing this I wonderedf why alaska kills the bears while hibernating instead of hunting them for food,or do they???http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110123/ap_on_sp_ot/us_odd_bear_roast
Their has to be laws on the books to take can of what Justice Clarence Thomas has done. The way to remove a supreme court justice needs to be loooked at very carefully. There has to be a way after all we the people did not vote them in.
You need to send this video to the DNR and Pac-Rim and then distribute copies to all Alaska schools so citizens can see what your native salmon will look like after a thorough wash in coal slurry. I seriously doubt any of your native bears would snuggle up to something that homely on their dinner plates and I’m pretty sure bears ain’t particular what they eat. That thing acted like it was allergic to me and kept shaking its head(s) in disbelief. I enjoyed the video,I needed a good laugh after reading RWNJ comments about KO on yahoo all day.
A straw poll conducted by the New Hampshire Republican Party today put Mitt Romney way out in first place with 35%. Ron Paul came in second with 11% and Tim Pawlenty came in third with 8%.
Waaayyyy back in fourth place was our little Quitter Queen with only 7% of the votes. That whole Presidential thing’s not looking too good for you, Princess!

I am speechless at the audacity of some members of the Supreme Court who clearly think they are above the law.
Apparently, Justice Clarence Thomas has decided that the federal law requiring him to list a spouse’s income on disclosure forms doesn’t apply to him, even for sums totaling more than a HALF-MILLION dollars! The law was put in place to prevent people being able to influence or bribe a justice by funneling money through their spouses.
“Between 2003 and 2007, Virginia Thomas, a longtime conservative activist, earned $686,589 from the Heritage Foundation, according to a Common Cause review of the foundation’s IRS records. Thomas failed to note the income in his Supreme Court financial disclosure forms for those years, instead checking a box labeled “none” where “spousal noninvestment income” would be disclosed.”
Virginia Thomas was also involved in a group called Liberty Central in 2009 and received an undisclosed salary, but that year Justice Thomas again listed spousal income as “none”.
Who do you turn to when Supreme Court justices are corrupt and break the law???

We are one screwed up nation and I’m scared to death!
It was a sad day for America when that man was confirmed. A sad day indeed.
Reposting from Thursday when JuneauMissesAnchorage says:
“I don’t know if anyone has posted this or not: http://www.samsung.com/solvefortomorrow. The school in Kokhanok is competing for a million dollar grant and a trip to New York City. They’re one of ten finalists and are competing against some really wealthy schools. They created a video about math and science in their community. The decision of who wins is based partly on public voting, and I thought the power of Mudflats might help them out a bit.”
Can anyone tell me why my computer freezes when I go to Huffington Post? I am dying to go and check out the story about Keith. I am really going to miss him.
good read, know thy enemy…

Y’all have probably already read this, but I thought it was great. The video is on Rachel Maddow’s blog.
“This week we saw a white, Catholic, Republican federal judge murdered on his way to greet a Democratic woman member of Congress who was his friend and is Jewish. Her life was saved initially by a 20-year-old Mexican-American college student, who saved her, and eventually by a Korean-American combat surgeon. Then it was all eulogized and explained by our African-American president.”
— historian Allen Ginsberg, as recounted by syndicated columnist Mark Shields on PBS Newshour
A little British humor to brighten y’all’s day!

Hilarious Peach thanks.
Thanks, I needed that!
BTW, thanks, AKM, for the photo and video of that remarkable fish.
I also enjoyed seeing the mechanism used to take the photos and lure the fish at the end. There is so much, so very much we don’t know. How could anyone be bored? So much to learn!
Not everyone shares your passion for learning and seeing new stuff, witness the mindless minions that get their orders from the Faux Noise Corp.

Here’s some amazing footage of the flash floods in Toowoomba, Australia. If you’ve never seen the awesome power of flash floods and the speed at which they can overwhelm an area, check this out.
The footage is taken by some people on the second floor of a building overlooking a small parking lot at the edge of a creek. It is truly astonishing how quickly the water rises and sweeps away the cars.

There’s nothing like the awesome power of nature to remind us how fragile we are.
My heart goes out to those suffering in Australia.
At least I learned about the importance of letting the air of tires to gain traction – though that was a close call for that guy.
I’m so sad about Keith, yet I’m confident he’ll continue to raise his voice, somehow.
Love the fish, it cheered me up a little. Now I’m going outside, braving the cold to get the shopping finished. We’ve got arctic air in the city today.
If you aren’t sick of opinion pieces about SWWNBN, this is AlterNet’s take:

Of course she’s gone too far. However, it may not hurt her.
Health and peace.
I wish I could rotate my eyes to avoid being captured by scientists!
Since it’s not February yet: Palin to be prosecuted for inciting violence if she visits Australia, attorney says

Another reason to love Oz, one of my favorite places.
Ah, if only. Anyone for starting donations to get her a ticket?
May England follow them
what a cool fish!
Very cool!
Kinda reminds me of some people I’ve met (or “met”)…guess who?
How Paranoia Infected America
http://www.newstatesman.com/north-america/2011/01/loughner-palin-obama-politics
**** What Palin and others on the right in particular do have to answer for is not Loughner’s behaviour, but the diminution of political debate in the US; the way populist poses have taken the place of argument. They have seized on the First Amendment right to free speech and twisted it to encourage dishonesty and stupidity. Uninterested in facts, they offer a dangerously combustible mix of religion and politics, an elision of dogma, morality and “patriotism” which mirrors the similarly ignorant ramblings of other extremists. The internet fuels this ignorance, allowing myths such as Obama’s supposed foreign nationality to spread.***
Thanks for that post BuffaloGal. I wholeheartedly agree with the author.
“They have seized on the First Amendment right to free speech and twisted it”… around the Second Amendment right to bear arms, which gives them the right to always shoot off their mouths.
Now THAT’s funny!!
Great excerpt! So true.
Great. Very funny. So true.
For anyone who hasn’t yet been there, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is amazing. They have a great jellyfish exhibit, amazing seahorses, and (my favorite) sea otters. OtterQueen sez: check it out!
Check out the OtterCam for Live Nude Otters:
http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/efc/efc_otter/otter_cam.aspx
Love watching otters but I have a question:
“Live Nude Otters”…is there any other kind in an aquarium???
It looks like a toy made by “Fisher Price”. Deep sea creatures are just so cool looking.
oops I thought I put this at the end of the thread. Sorry!!
I haven’t been for years and it was wonderful back then.
When we lived near Tacoma, loved to visit the otters at the zoo there. In fact, whenever we needed a lift, that’s where we’d head. We were kind of nerdy, simplistic newlyweds, I guess. Still get our kicks rather cheaply, but, hey, that’s good, right?
We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium when my brother-in-law got married. It was a fantastic visit. I think we hung out all day with all the rellies. A few days later my sister-in-law and I kayaked in the Bay where we were sternly warned to not interact with the marina life. Seals come up to your kayak and try to get you to play [sigh… $10,000 fine if you’re caught].
Now for something completely different…a very fun video about reading:
http://publishingperspectives.com/2011/01/funny-rap-video-about-reading-books/
I love the librarian video! But then, my husband plays the banjo and I had once wanted to be a librarian. Sigh, roads not taken.
Guess that’s why I love the internet and the wondrous variety of things we find for each other here at mudflats.
The article is the same old stuff but the picture is worth a look:
http://seerpress.com/%E2%80%98just-say-no%E2%80%99-to-palin-in-february/23154/
had to laugh at that one
One day at a time, Dana. One day at a time.
When my kids were young we spent a lot of time in the Museum of Natural History in London. They have a fabulous section on the strange creatures of the sea that I loved.
On an open thread topic: The ADN has a great article on using language to inflame opponents versus real policy discussions. Of course Palin is used as an example (but it’s not February yet so I’m safe).
http://www.adn.com/2011/01/21/1661058/palin-aims-to-offend-liberals.html
I’m not promising anything yet as regards February. I won’t comment on her inane tweets or her FB. But if some serious scandal erupts, I will not be able to resist! 🙂
Fair enough.
I think it would be nice but I am sure she will do something to be back in the lame media as she calls it.
This may have been mentioned on a previous thread but I just heard it for the first time.
In reference to what plans are underway to turn our economy around, did our intelligent, well educated President actually say , ” We’re gonna build stuff. And we’re gonna invent stuff !!”
O dear.
( PS: I want a see-thru fish with swivel eyes! )
It’s somewhat lacking, but much better than “Hardy har har! Who don’t need Hydrogen cars! There’s plenty of oil!”
Agreed !
I think part of the answer will certainly come by way of tapping American ingenuity but I so wish he would’ve phrased it differently. I heard, ” we’re gonna invent stuff” and I was stopped mid-slurp as I sat there with my coffee. It was so out of character. Sounded like he was speaking Palinese!
Come to think of it, it might very well have been a ‘nod’ to the Palin-talkers and ‘bots on his part. What better way to point out the incredible difference between the thoughtful, the articulate, the intelligent than to have someone who unfailingly exhibits those traits come out with an intentional doozie of a statement? Kind of like your English teacher saying: “We ain’t never went yet and we ain’t gonna wash them dogs, neither.” OTOH, it might have just been that he figured since that was as much as their [the ‘Palin-talkers and ‘bots] little brains could comprehend… 😉 beth.
That was an amazing video! I love that we are still finding new varieties of life on this planet. Wish we could have a push to explore more of our deep oceans, the way we had a push to explore outer space and get to the moon. We know more about the moon than we know about our deep oceans.
Yes it is an amazing video. I always enjoy videos about new species or at least ones I never saw or heard of.
Good morning, AKM. That little video was fun. I loved the last bit! Thank you.
great looking creature.
Just got my notice that Keith Olbermann is done (fell asleep last night)
I’m in shock 🙁
