Open Thread: Rescued Dogs from Montana Creek Ready for Adoption (by LKB)

I went into Petco yesterday to buy food for our Sheltie and saw several dogs wearing “adopt me” signs (like “Baron” below).

It turns out that Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue were there with a few of the animals available for adoption. Baron was a sweet dog but very shy and the folks from the Rescue explained he was one of the over 150 starving huskies removed from a Montana Creek kennel (near Talkeetna) this past January:

Alaska State Troopers arrived Monday evening at the Montana Creek home of 53-year-old Frank Rich of Willow, near Mile 92 of the Parks Highway, to investigate a report of animal neglect.

Troopers say when they arrived at the house on Kashwitna Drive, there was no food or water for the dogs. There were about 150 dogs on the property.

Troopers say nearly all the dogs were malnourished and dehydrated. The animals were shivering and eating snow and their own feces. An additional 22 dogs that had already died were found on the properly, apparently dead from exposure, starvation and dehydration. They say there could be more dead dogs on the property.

About 30 of the dogs are puppies. Some are just a few weeks old.

According to the Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue personnel, the dogs are now physically healthy. Like Baron, they have also been working well in their foster homes and are ready to find permanent families. These dogs understandably bear some scars from their ordeal and require folks who are experienced and understand canine behavior.

While Baron seemed to be the most shy, Monty (above) allowed both me and my daughter to pet him. All were very sweet.

They also had several dogs who were regular rescues like the tired guy my daughter befriended (top photo) and lovable Benz who was so happy to see everyone, this was the only picture that didn’t turn out as a blur:

Later today, I’ll have a video of “Baron” posted at my YouTube channel.

If you are interested in finding out more or possibly can provide a home for one of the animals, visit the Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue website, email them at [email protected] or call them in Palmer at: (907) 745-7030. They also have a Facebook page and a donation button!

You can also adopt the dogs from the Mat-Su Animal shelter on 49th State Street off the Palmer Wasilla highway.

Oooo……a big motorcade just passed my house. Big black vans and buses and a police escort. I live close to the British Ambassadors residence so it might be for him.

The weather here is awful – wet and very windy. Poor Michelle’s hair was being blown all over the place.

You should have asked the Potus to drop off a copy of the newest best-seller on his way past your place. I’m sure he would oblige a fellow Irish Person.

Ptlease, if you can, adopt from a shelter. Put the breeders out of business. Love the mutts. Love the ferals. Love the lost.

  5. Laurie says:

So nice to see their fortunes take a turn for the better.

I have my hands full with my own 4 canines and 6 cats and can’t adopt but I’m so happy to see that these guys are getting the best publicity in order to find them new homes. I gave some bucks to feed them when they first showed up at the shelter and then spent a day running around purchasing all the towels and blankets I could find in our local thrift stores to give them bedding. I donated a bit more cash to Spenard builders to assist with building them shelters and dog houses at the pound. I wish I had the space and time to add a new member to the family but I can’t. I hope others find it within them to give a nice home to these very special dogs. There are very few things in life as rewarding as having a loyal canine or feline companion. My home is full; full of love, fur, and now Cottonwood “stickies” that make their way inside on every tail and bit of fur that my guys have! It’s a messy time of year for those with critters but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

PetMom i know how you feel. i rescued my dear kitty from some boys who were going to put the poor little one in a park where there were feral gangs of dogs. my little one didn’t even have his eyes opened yet so the first face he ever saw was mine. he has a been wonderful friend and companion for thirteen years and i love him so much.
when i am sick he comforts me by snuggling and purring like a tribble.

  8. SWrona from NY says:

Hope they find loving homes very soon.

  9. AKMuckraker says:

Thanks for following up on these wonderful animals, Linda! So many people were heartbroken when that story came out. Glad to see they now have the opportunity to get the love they deserve.

  10. bubbles says:

Linda did you get one of them cuties?

  11. jimzmum says:

Thank you, Linda for sharing pictures of those sweet pups. I do hope they find the best of homes.

It is not yet eleven o’clock in the morning, and we are about finished being outside for the day. Still have some things to do, but we came in to check laundry, email, and grab more bottles of water. Not a good idea to keep coming inside. We cool off outside before coming in. Takes a while to get used to the heat and humidity returning. Sheesh.

Forty Watt- The Atlantic Wire is reporting today that Satoshi Kanazawa is going to resign his post or be dismissed for his comments about Black women. Thank you for the heads-up.Karma strikes again.

      By Dudley Randall

She didn’t know she was beautiful,
      though her smiles were dawn,
      her voice was bells,
and her skin deep velvet Night.

She didn’t know she was beautiful,
      although her deeds,
      kind, generous, unobtrusive,
      gave hope to some,
      and help to others,
and inspiration to us all. And
      beauty is as beauty does,
      they say.

      Then one day there blossomed
      a crown upon her head,
      bushy, bouffant, real Afro-down,
      Queen Nefertiti again.
And now her regal wooly crown
      declares,
      I know
      I’m black
      AND
      beautiful.

Mike i will let this poem by a Black Man speak for me and my sisters.
note to Kanazawa in the immortal words of our beloved Irishgirl: go feck yourself.

Got your looting all done and made it home safely,I trust. We had thunderstorms and rain so I stayed home and dry.

me too. the whole rapture thing was a bust here in New York.
i think we got to wait for 11/11/2011 or 11/11/2111 or maybe 12/12/2012 or it could be
          12/12/2112…sheesh

If I lived closer, I would love to adopt one.
