Mudflix – Whose Books Would Chicagoans Ban? (You’ll Never Guess)
OK, just to be clear, we here at The Mudflats totally heart the first amendment. It’s actually one of our favorite ones. We would never want to sound like we wanted to limit speech, or squelch the marketplace of ideas, no matter how mind-numbing, head-banging, or downright painfully idiotic those “ideas” may be.
That said – Your average Chicagoan on the street was asked which books they would like to see banned at the Printer’s Row Literature Festival in their city. Guess who won.
Here are the results:
Sarah Palin 36%
Glenn Beck 23%
Ann Coulter 22%
Adolf Hitler 0.5%
Ayn Rand 0.4%
Michael Moore 0.3%
Andrew Breitbart 0.2%
Bill Clinton 0.2%
Barack Obama 0.1%
Hmmmmmm. No books with over 200 words and a third grade reading level? Shame on then! Banning pop up and children’s books.
What’s next? The Cat in the Hat?
Happens to me all the time …! Durn it!
I am sure $arah Palin is pleased that she finally beat President Obama at something
and
that she is not, for once, Number Two.
At the very least, could we please get some book jacket warning labels that state the contents may contain hate, half truths and downright lies?
I don’t believe in banning books, but could we at least ban her movie?
Does NOT buying them by the droves count as a ban? I think all of the non-purchases speak volumes.
Heh.
Yes! This adopted Chicagoan agrees with the number 1 spot!!
Palin – Undefeated in turning off just about everyone….
Course they’re not in real Amerika.
By the way, while many say Palin is not running her BFF Greta thinks that she is:

Hmm, she hasn’t said no. But even when she would say yes, sometimes she meant no. Even if it were for something she supposedly espoused, like anti-abortion (I can’t call it prolife). One of the later chapters in the Bailey and AKM book, he describes how she stood up a supporter to be the first to sign a petition for parental notification. Don’t have the book here in front of me, don’t recall all the details, but it was one instance in a long line where she said “yes” but it really was “if something better comes along, I’ll do that” or “I’ll do it if you don’t piss me off in the mean time”, or any number of other than “yes” replies, which translated into NO.
I have to say their choices are good, but I just can’t ban books – even those obnoxious ones that topped the list. I have been known to turn the books over in the book store, however, so the cover isn’t so obvious. And I had to laugh the other day when I found Glenn Beck’s books all turned over. I actually picked it up to see what book just had the back cover showing. 🙂
Cool!
Like you, I believe COMPLETELY in freedom of speech.
That said, it tickles me that READERS feel those writes are unworthy of ink and paper!
I know the dedication of “The Mudflats” but aren’t we over this trash yet ???
nem
Well, I’m from Downstate but I have to tell you that I admire the Chicagoans good taste. Those first five are the ones I will never read.
And I never would have thought to add Breitbart to the list, but then I never believe a word that comes out of his mouth anyway.
Way To Go, Chicago!!
Breitbart is a nasty liar…a nasty human..!
Speaking of banning books–how about banning some magazine covers? That “elbows back” shot of Palin on Newsweek is awful. At first I thought it was a joke. Compare that with Michelle Obama on the upcoming cover of Ladies Home Journal, or Home & Garden, or WHATEVER–can’t think of the name of the magazine–hate it when I go blank like that (happens all the dang time!)
me to Auni.♥
Don’t worry about going blank on a name or 2 or 6 or whatever, you’ll remember it in the middle of the night sometime. Or at least I do.
Not sure what’s more disturbing — Brietbart being nearly half as bad as Hitler or Palin being 72 times worse than Hitler!
Ha! Love it. Don’t worry AKM, the Chicagoans were exercising their First Amendment rights by making their vote. There is some kind of symmetry or balance with this.
Bwahahahaha! It pleases me so that the majority (top 3) were all RWNJ whackos. 🙂
Sarah proclaimed in Newsweek with her insane photo shoot that she could win. Well, yes she can….
😀
I would never ban a book .
But most of the authors in that poll actually wrote the books with their names on the cover.
She won!!! She won!!! She’s number ONE!!!
Seeee, all you haters… 😛 …everyone just LUVS Sarah, our next Prezzident!! Woo hoo!!!!
(Oh, wait a minute. Winning this is not really a good thing, is it? Never mind… )
😉
All Sarah, All The Time
[thumbs up icon] Like! beth.
sweet! i knew she could do it if she tried. go Buttercup go!
no, leenie…it would not be a good thingy…..lol
That tickles me to death!
Haahaahaahaahaa!!!
*sigh* This is hard for me. As practically a native Illini, having lived here since 1996, and realizing that the whole danged state political orbit revolves around Chicago, I have to applaud their great intelligence with these numbers!
Hmmm Palin,Beck,Coulter considered literature. Not my choice of definition.
Totally unsurprising considering the sample set was skewed in favor of people who can read more than 20 words per minute.
