I hesitate to bring this up as it involves a minister the polar opposite of MLK. I read in the ADN that the city of Anchorage in looking into possible law breaking involving Jerry Prevo and the Anchorage Baptist Temple and the twenty homes they own and which have tax exempt status. Apparently the problems came to light during the Pastor Jerrys sons divorce proceedings. It wasn’t the possible fraud that shocked me, it was that his son was getting divorced. What happened to the sanctity of marriage? I hope he disowns him. Right.
I sometimes wonder what MLK would have thought about us electing our first African-American President.
I suspect he would have been proud that so many people of different colors, religions, economic classes, and geographical areas voted for him. But he would no doubt be dismayed at the hate that has blossomed all over our country, inspired by President Obama’s victory.
Although it it discouraging, and often infuriating, that we have come so far and yet advanced so little, perhaps we should at least be grateful that the ugliness has been exposed. A festering wound only begins to heal when it is exposed to the air and sunlight.
I heard on NPR about the riverboat steamer cruising into Memphis that day. Folks gathered long willow stems and weaved a wreath, sprayed it black. It was a beautiful wreath. They had a ceremony and threw the wreath in the river. All passengers, black and white, came up to the deck as they threw it in the river. To the music of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”. (sigh)
We just came home from seeing an extraordinary film, “Nostalgia for the Light,” a Chilean documentary (and so much more) about the Atacanda Desert where the huge telescopes are located and where the remains of some of those who “disappeared” under the dictatorships. I encourage one and all to see this film if you have the opportunity. I think Martin Luther King would have liked it – he is probably among the stars right now.

And a tip of the antlers to MLK and a few tears.

I had never heard that story. Thanks for sharing, it is a nice snapshot of that day.

Too bad most GOPers, as well as others, have not absorbed this lesson. Peace.
