Open Thread – Please Help if You Can

According to the Anchorage Daily News:
Dozens of dogs, cats and parakeets seized by authorities in two unrelated animal cruelty cases over the weekend have packed the Anchorage animal shelter and prompted a plea for donations of food, blankets and kitty litter.
One case involves 22 cats, the other 39 dogs and more than 40 parakeets. Details are available by clicking the link above.
The shelter is in need of the following items:
• Non-clumping cat litter, preferably a clay litter
• Parakeet food
• Small, clean blankets and towels
• Canned dog and cat food
• Dry Science Diet brand dog food for small breeds.
Donations can be brought to the Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center at 4711 Elmore Road during business hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
In addition, local groomer Arctic Tails has been bathing and grooming the dogs as a voluntary effort. People who want to donate money can contact Arctic Tails at 360-3220.
Information about the shelter operations, including pets available for adoption, is on its Web site, www.muni.org/animal.

I am slow on catching up but will get a donation in to help with this. Thanks to all, also, that we need to support our local shelters regularly!
For anyone who missed this little gem, here’s a link to a video of President Obama sending 90th birthday wishes to Betty White. He has a special request for her that’s hilarious.
What a special man he is!

Go Wisconsin!!! Woo hoo!!!
They needed 540,208 signatures to force a recall election of Gov Scott Walker but got OVER A MILLION!!! That’s almost as many as he got in the election in the first place!
They also expect to get enough signatures for recalls of the Lt. Gov and 4 other state Senators, including the smarmy Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald. The package of petition papers totaled 300,000 pages and weighed 3,000 pounds.
Congratulations, Wisconsin! 🙂
Donate directly to your local shelter but do NOT donated to HSUS. They don’t support local shelters at all.

There were several cases of hoarding that maxed out the shelters on Long Island last year. So sad.
A distant cousin of my father’s used to run a shelter in Freeport where my oldest sister volunteered when she was growing up. That’s where we got the two dogs we had for years. One was a mutt and the smartest dog I’ve ever known.
Over the years we also played foster home for several other hard-to-place dogs or puppies that were not ready for adoption – everything from a chihuahua/beagle puppy that fit in one hand to an enormous great dane.
Don’t know if that shelter is still around but it did a wonderful job of rehabbing injured and abandoned animals and finding good homes for them.
We have had several cases of animal hoarding in central Ohio. The shelters in several counties are stretched to the max. It makes me very sad to think about. My finances are stretched so donating money isn’t an option. I do have stacks of newspaper that one shelter accepts. Every little bit helps.
Aaaargh! I would like to have about 20 animals, but my landlord doesn’t allow pets. I donate when I can. My husband has agreed that when we buy a house, I want to help rehabilitate animals for either release (wild animals) or adoption.
I live too far away to donate goods but will contact to donate what I can. This post reminds me of the importance to support my local humane shelter…thank you.
Our local shelter was inundated this Spring from flooding and then again from Irene.
People don’t realize that when people lose their homes, they usually lose their pets due to relocation.
We also had a case of hoarding and that combined with the flooding, has stretched our local shelter’s resources to the max.
Please donate to the any shelter if you can. They do an incredible job with very limited resources.
We have gotten several of our kittens from them and they make the most wonderful pets.
