Remember when THIS was a Republican President, and former General?
Do you people really believe their is any difference between a Democrate and a republican ? All i see is a bunch or liars spending millions to get a seat ion congress to join the other 247 millionairs that are in congress now. As far as the debates go, Paul is the only straight shooter, but he will never get the nod. Until we have term limits, buy back the Fed., No outside donations from anyone, including packs, eliminate lobbiests,.Have the Government pay PBS so each person running for office gets 3 hrs each to state their intentions, starting three months before the elections, No tv adds and a cap on spending so they are not as apt to buy the seat. As for the president, Same thing, and no time off from congress or the president to run around the country. There should be no Christmas vacation, easter, good friday, Because they have denied God in schools, money ect. Supreme court justices, same thing. Give them all 30 days vacation a year. Most of us (that are lucky enough to have a job, don’t get that many. Excuse the spelling, not on of my strong points.
What to do about Newt? I’m glad you asked. Simply change newt from a noun to an adverb-neutered-and he will be as meek and docile his own family will like him. He is guaranteed to be a better human in all ways and w/o testosterone he will never cheat on his spouse/spouses again.
THANK YOU to everyone who signed the petition when Hy-Vee fired Kyle Dowie from the job he’d had for decades. He’s being re-hired:
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120125/NEWS/120125021/0/SPORTS08/?odyssey=nav%7Chead
Yay! Though they should give him his old job back if that is what he wants.
he gets a different job if he decides to re-up.
This has me truly creeped out.
Newt Gingrich Names ‘Apostle’ Dutch Sheets to his Faith Leaders Coalition
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/newt-gingrich-names-apostle-dutch-sheets-his-faith-leaders-coalition
This Dutch Sheets guy is quite the piece of work. He claims God has given him visions and prophecies about Alaska, Palin, gays, Obama, end-times, etc. He is a big time believer in taking over the earth for Jesus. The very fact that Newt thought this appointment was a good idea tells me he has gone off the deep end. I wouldn’t doubt that this has something to do with Palin and her non-endorsement endorsement. Sheets has been a guest pastor at the Wasilla Assembly of God a number of times and believes that Palin has been divinely chosen by God to lead to great things ( gak ) I find it hard to believe that Newt ran into this guy on his own.
You’d think the media would eat this kind of thing up with a spoon. Let’s start asking Newt about these affiliations and asking him how he feels about Dutch insisting that we currently have a Muslim president and that God is going to bring severe punishment to America because we have embraced socialism and homosexuality. I’d like to hear him bluster and intimidate his way out of that sort of questioning.
so. much. crazy.
Another bit of Newtiness :
Gay marriage is a “Perfect Example of What I Mean by the Rise of Paganism” ( not only insight into Newt but also those that he’s courting. it’s a doozy )
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/gingrich-gay-marriage-perfect-example-what-i-mean-rise-paganism
Does he not realize that gays , family members of gays, liberals, moderates, sane Christians, scientists, intellectuals and the general population of the fairly balanced , can all read and are also registered to vote ?
Oh, and just in case you hadn’t heard – Newt didn’t want to run for president. He is volunteering for the good of the nation because all the other candidates were so gawd awful. He did so even though he realized he would suffer greatly.
( It’d be wrong to wish for the ghost of Ike to come back with a smiting vengeance , right ? )
It just floors me that Ginrich can say anything about what ‘traditional marriage’ should be. He has no right to determine for anyone what marriage is or isn’t on a secular level. Churches are free to make their own rules, but someone who’s on his third wife after marrying the women he cheated on wives #1 and #2 with has NO business telling anyone who they can or can’t marry.
agreed ( to the gagillionth degree )
Newt is running for president because all the others are awful? Well, I DO agree with him on that score.
But is he trying to make them look better by comparison? How thoughtful.
Ok – just one more post . After this I’ll take to pacing and mumbling to the cats. ( broken up by moments of cocktailing and then yelling to the cats )
This is a more detailed article about the appointment of Dutch Sheets to Gingrich’s , “Faith Leaders Coalition”. ( some really good links )
http://www.talk2action.org/story/2012/1/26/141614/312
Hmm. “Dutch Sheets.” Is that related to “French Kiss?” 🙂
Twould be nice if one of these “apistles” or other maroons would define their idea of “greatness” for America. They would probably scare semi-sane people to death.
Coming back from the grocery this afternoon, I drove along Hy 5 where 2,200 american flags are placed along the Hy from the City limits to the Lange Funeral home in honor of fallen Marine Master Sgt. Travis W. Riddick. If this doesn’t pull a person’s heart string—I don’t know what would.
The residents of Centerville are asked to fly flags at half staff. The flags will fly at half-staff until after Riddick’s funeral service on Friday.
“Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice”
“There’s no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.
“The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.
“Prejudice is extremely complex and multifaceted, making it critical that any factors contributing to bias are uncovered and understood,” he said….”
http://www.livescience.com/18132-intelligence-social-conservatism-racism.html
Now I know why Republicans reject science.
This fascinates me. I’m looking forward to reading it . I really like the quote about prejudice being extremely complex. I know that I’m given to knee-jerk reactions to the positions ( rantings?) from the extreme right – but at the end of the day, I generally try to talk myself down with a reminder that everyone has their own perspective, and our individual views are formed by way of many different influences.
Experience outside a closed community, be it family, community or broader region helps to open minds and hearts.
My mom grew up in a town that was covertly very prejudiced. You just didn’t say it out loud, like you could in the South. As an adult, she discovered that all those things she’d picked up were not true. She tried to get rid of them, shake them off, but found they were really emotional in nature. She always talked a good game, though, and never ever let us kids know her feelings because she knew they were wrong. We heard enough of that garbage from our uncle.
Anyway, she raised us to see all people as equal, and I didn’t find out about her difficulties along that line until I was in college. This was a Herculean effort on her part, as I dated a young man from Tanzania when I was in high school. She never made us feel uncomfortable, though plenty of others did. Prejudice was complex for her, all right.
And while she never beat down her general prejudice, she did manage to defeat it in specific cases and went on to genuinely welcome people of many different races and ethnic groups and orientations into the extended family.
I’m proud she worked hard to raise us right despite her personal feelings along those lines. Good job, mom!
Anchorage made the Forbes list of most dangerous cities, mostly due to its rape statistics. Might it be an impetus to make things better?
We will see. Despite the Gov’s push to reduce domestic violence throughout the state I am not sure the prosecutors got the word.
Most of the violence against women, children and others that occurs out in the bush, at least in our area, gets pleaded down.
I can’t blame the troopers and VPSOs as they seem to get good training and want to see the issue through but there seems to be an attitude once caught to get the entire mess over with as quickly as possible.
It’s easier to make Anchorage safer.
Just change the laws so that not so many things are listed as rape or domestic violence. Then, the police don’t have to investigate, DA doesn’t have to prosecute, and you don’t have to house all those now innocent people in jail.
Isn’t that what some town in the midwest did?
I don’t think I understand you ‘Baker’s Dozen”. I want to think sarcasm is at play here. This is too close to what the US House of Representatives has tried to do by passing a law that redefines rape. This is not a laughing matter. nem
I was being sarcastic. You do not cut crime by redefining it as “not crime.” (Not that there aren’t some things that shouldn’t be considered criminal).
Deny it all she will, Sarah Palin will forever be associated with threats of violence encouraged by crosshairs targeted on legislators. ‘Surveyor marks’ my @ss!
“Five Democratic State Senators in Missouri discovered large, orange crosshair stickers over their office nameplates on Tuesday in the Capitol Building in Jefferson. ”
Nah, those aren’t really threats at all, right Sarah???
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/01/26/412163/five-missouri-democrats-discover-crosshairs-outside-their-capitol-offices/#comment_link
Going back to the story some 9 hours later, I’m noticing that a lot of the comments place much of the blame for starting this crosshairs threat idea directly on Palin.
How does it feel, Sarah, to get credit for this violent new pastime?
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120125/NEWS/120125021?odyssey=mod|mostcom Fired Hy-Vee employee gets invited back for different job. Hy-Vee has caved into pressure from 19,000 signatures. Hy-Vee claims the Korporation has been mis-characterized. Boo-freaking-hoo.
Eisenhower collaborated with and took political advantage from McCarthyism, one of the worst unconstitutional scourges of American history. You might want to set Eisenhower in a more balanced focus. For Pete Seeger, who turns 93 this May, the best revenge was a long and healthy life. There is far more to be learned and emulated from Seeger than from Eisenhower.
Yes, Polarbear. I think this is a reminder that people and circumstances are complicated and that most people are neither all bad or all good. Speaking for myself, I find it important to try to grapple with these complexities. Sometimes new insights emerge – and sometimes they don’t. 😉

For those who do not visit the forums…..
Juneau was visited by mudpup Below the Beltway aka Puffin Shrapnel Palin and friends. They are great company!
A little amusement was had by BtB when she asked the front desk for the Corrupt Bastards Club. They were a little confused at first, but once she explained a bit, their eyes lit up and they gave quite the amusing replay.
Sharp wit, great humor, and many laughs abounded as we drank in the Bubble Room and then ate at a local dinery down the street. Our visiting mudpup and future pups seemed to enjoy themselves and I immensely enjoyed their company.
Will be off on a winter tour this morning — including the icy falls that Ben showered in — it’s still frozen so no showers in the waterfall for these visitors! No bears either — at least hopefully not as they should all be sleeping snuggly in their dens. If we see a bear, I’m not playing traffic cop or getting to close or I might be lunch. Of course, all I would have to do is out run our slowest visitor!
Will report more later and encourage Below the Beltway and friends to chime in with their perspective!
Sorry for the hijack away from Ike, who would be a leader for our country but who would be declared DOA according to the RWNJs that abound these days. It is an open thread, thus the report about our visiting mudpups!
nice Bear Woman. enjoy and let the visiting Pups know we would like to hear all about their trip…..Bubble Room eh? i have to go there someday. LOL
BTW
bubbles. Go to your room.
teehee.
Yay! Have fun in the snow – sure is lots of it right now!
Ike’s comment is from his “Cross of Iron” or “The Chance for Peace” speech in 1953.
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article9743.htm
In my estimation, Ike was the last true Republican to hold high public office. Today’s “Republicans” would look upon Ike as a flaming Liberal.
General Eisenhower was courted by both political parties after WWll.
Class War
Is it a coincidence that our government’s war on the poor and the middle class started after the end of the cold war? No more threat of international communism, no more pride in a thriving middle class!
My grandfather, as a young man, had been a republican as his father was born into slavery and became a republican–because of Lincoln. The first democrat my grandfather voted for was FDR and when Kennedy campaigned he officially became a Democrat. He always respected the GOP though. He’d be shocked beyond reason if he were still alive at what they have become.
Nice republican ladies having teas did much for women’s reproduction rights and republicans walked in the civil rights marches. As a teen I had always thought of republicans as the grounded ones and we democrats as always wanting to push to make life better for the everyman.
We’ve basically stayed the same. What happened to the republicans?
i have similar memories Leota. my parents might not be shocked at the racist evangelical co-opting of the Republican Party but they would be saddened that such people continue to dominate our national discourse. when i was a child the Dixie Democrats were just as ugly and evil as today’s Republicans.
Absolutely true !!!
A lot of Dixie Democrats became Democrats as a reaction against Lincoln. They eventually switched back to the Republican party.
Then there was LBJ, a Democrat, who was not above some dirty tricks….
Jim Wright at Stonekettle Station recently did a piece on exactly that. How he stayed the same and the GOP left him.
I find it interesting that modern twenty-first century Republicans seem to have no recollection that Dwight Eisenhower was a Republican president. It’s as if Ronald Reagan’s years in office completely erased the memory of the Eisenhower presidency from their brains. Nowadays, it’s Democrats who hark back to the Eisenhower days. But I can remember that my parents, liberal Democrats, did not like Eisenhower at the time but he emerges as a “saint” compared to all those Republican presidents who have followed him.
I have vague memories of Ike,more memories of JFK. I was a ten year old fifth grader when JFK was murdered and I was scared that my ten year old life was going to end with a war with Commie Russia. Ike is the only Rethuglican Potus in my life that does not rate being impeached. The other five scumbags should all be impeached for crimes against humanity. Even if we have to dis-interr the ornery varmints.
Even Ford? I thought he did a pretty good job mopping up after Nixon.
Ford pardoned the worst crook ever in the WH and even tried to impeach a Scotus justice. He was,IMHO,one of the most partisan pols ever. Besides, according to SNL,Ford couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time without falling on his face. Ask the people and journalists of East Timor what they really think of Ford and Kissinger. That is if any of them are still alive.
…except he PARDONED Nixon; which then opened the door for subsquent Presidents to do “bad things” , knowing that they would not be personally held accountable anymore…
Nah, we don’t have to disinter them, just have the Mormon’s baptize them as Mormons and then they will all be saved. Won’t that work? ;-}
YIKES. How did I do that? Apostrophe Catastrophe! Expletive Deleted!
beaglemom, I was just going to make the same point. My parents were very active Democrats in Kansas, of all places, back in the 50s. I still have two little donkey pins with 56 in rhinestones. It was after Eisenhower was elected that they seemed to lose their enthusiasm for the process. My mother later supported Kennedy but not actively.
Still, for all my parents support of the Democratic party, they respected the office of the president. For whatever reason, President Eisenhower’s plane landed in Garden City, Kansas. I remember we went out to the airport with hundreds of others, just to see the President. My dad put me on his shoulders so I could see and even at age 6 I knew that was an important moment. I think he gave a short speech, but I really was too young to remember any of what he said.
I really like the above quote from Eisenhower. It shows that he did have an understanding of what was important for the country and did really care about our making progress.
Ike was politically saddled with Dick Nixon. Ironic, is it not, none of the GOP even raise his name. He created the southern strategy that lives today.
Don’t get Rethuglicans all wrong. They actually do have a foreign aid policy that is very effective, depending on your perspective of effectiveness, They have little or no compunction about feeding the poor and children of Nations around the world especially when they disagree with those Nation’s leaders. Just feed the populace white phosphorous, depleted uranium in massive, unheard of tonnages and throw in the largest laser-guided bombs in the history of the world. It is amazing how fast so many innocent have their hunger and material needs resolved for all time. If it makes you squeamisnh, give it a fancy name like collateral damage or else blame the innocent victims for bearing the brunt of rwnj anger. Afterall,as G Hitler Weasel Bushs henchmen explained after the illegal overthrow of Noriega in Panama,we had to test our new military toys on someone.
Thank you for this post. No small wonder, is it, why the GOP of today will not speak of Eisenhower. They would drive him from the party today if he had the temerity to run for office amongst the current crop of clowns.
Then, it was great minds who truly wanted the best for America. Now, it’s, “Bring in the clowns!”
There is no comparison between the Lincoln or Eisenhower republicans and the current crop of demagogues. And speaking of demagogues (which is defined as: Political agitator who appeals to the prejudice and passions of the mob) take a look at this video from CNN which shows Gingrich in one of his many lies: http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/01/gingrich-admits-abc-claim-was-false-112344.html
Thanks for the link. Politico also listed a whole bunch of extra articles worth reading. Gingrich/rwnj lies-civility dies.
I hope that Palin attacks all of the people who have exposed Gingrich for the fraud that he is. Wouldn’t you just love to see her go after Coulter with her ‘panties in a wad’ quip then have sharp-tongued Coulter destroy her!
I know it’s a dangerous concept but I will not waste anymore energy on snewt. I lived thru the 90’s. politically aware.
Republican ideology requires a leap from Reagan back to the founding fathers and requires a connection of ideology and theology that only exists in fantasy.
It is difficult to talk to these people.
