In My Cottage Garden: Dohnn Wood at the Anchorage Garden Club
Well, it is truly spring in Anchorage and even the flowers are undaunted by the snow. This was a picture taken at UAA yesterday. As the melt continues, the flowers have already pushed their way to the surface under the snow and even have blooms!
As promised, today’s post is all Dohnn Wood and container vegetables.
I apologize for the video. The meeting is at Pioneer Schoolhouse, which is as old as the name suggests. They turned the lights off to better see the slide show so I had to decide which to focus on, the speaker or the show. That’s why Dohnn is in the dark. Also, I missed the exact time when the video camera hit it’s 30 min cutoff so there is about a minute or so missing between the part one and part two.
In the video, I asked the question about planting brassica seeds (cabbage, kale, broccoli, etc…) directly into the ground early. I should be doing that within the next week as soon as I can buy some of the fabric.
Everytime I see his presentation I so desperately want my yard to look like his!
For those of you who wanted to keep track of how my seeds are doing…
From left to right: Garlic Chives, Spearmint, Basil Trio and Lavender
The other seeds (Strawberries, sage, parsley, etc…are a little slower but several are showing themselves.

Oh,thank you for sharing the videos, Linda!
I do a lot of container gardening but saw/heard some cool ideas I’m going to try.
Do you remember the name of the book he held up about co-planting?
I’ve got beets, spinach, and multiple greens all started outside under double covers now, all in containers.
The cover dealie really works!
(h/t to Ugavic for challenging me to try it last year. Best bet I ever lost 🙂 )
Seeds placed in the ground will not germinate until the soil has warmed up to a certain point. Placing visqueen over it will speed warming.
Dohnn Wood says to use a permeable garden fabric wich allows the sun and water in but still keepe the heat in.
Yes. I was thinking to spread out of pre-planting season, to speed up the warming and snow melting, then remove..
