Open Thread – Transitions
It was overcast in Providence today, but fortunately for you in Alaska, the day was clear and an event that will never again be visible in our lifetimes was on display. Venus passed before the Sun, and thanks to Spouse, a great camera, an even greater telescope, and a solar filter, the image was captured. Breathtaking.
And on a different note, those of us who are here getting ready for Netroots Nation in Providence, Rhode Island, would also like to send out a message of solidarity to those in Wisconsin who have worked so hard for so long on the effort to recall Governor Scott Walker. Many, many of us across the nation were with you, and share your disappointment. But we also celebrate the fact that there are so many of you who cared, and put your efforts, and your time behind this effort. It is hard to lose battles, but we will win the war. The key to it all, and the hardest part, is that even in the face of defeat, we must always persist. It isn’t for us, but for those who follow. After a period of mourning, we must rise, and dust ourselves off and be ready for the next battle. We do not always lose, but we will once we stop trying. Peace to you, and thank you from all those who watched from afar with respect and awe for your efforts.
“When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall – think of it, always.” ~Mahatma Gandhi
Just heard this on MSNBC/Lawrence O’Donnel show. Interesting!

Everything about Romney is creepy. I remember another story of someone in the Kansas City area who was impersonating a police officer. Only this guy would follow women who were alone, stop them and rape them. At one point the police even told women not to stop in dark out of the way places if it looked like they were being pulled over. Instead they said to drive to a police station or a well lit populated parking lot of a store.
So I wonder if good old Mitt remembers this particular youthful prank. I know a lot of people did things they shouldn’t have, but he seems to have done more than his fair share.
“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” – Ray Bradbury. I think we’re seeing that very thing happening. What a fantastic legacy he leaves behind. Thank you !
I got an email from Oceana, inviting me to nominate an Ocean Hero. I nominated Rick Steiner of Oasis Earth (and frequent contributor to The Mudflats). It made me feel REALLY good to do so. If you’d like to nominate an Ocean Hero, you can do so here:

It was overcast and rainy at times in NYC yesterday, so I watched the transition via NASA. The commentary from Hawaii was really fun (it was impossible to get on the site sooner). Here’s a great collection of photos to supplement the terrific shot from Spouse:

Wisconsin, I’m looking forward to Walker’s indictment, trial, and conviction. I agree with merrycricket, misinforming voters should be a crime.
When does the indictment trial begin?
If found guily as charged, could he spend some time in jail/prison?
WoW
I know I’ve been busy getting ready for fishing and not able to make my daily visit to the mudflats….
However, it is looking rather nice around here. Nice. Enjoyable.
The “Upper Left Corner”! Ha! I love it.
“The tragedy of human history lies in the enormous potential for destruction in rare acts of evil, not in the high frequency of evil people. Complex systems can only be built step by step, whereas destruction rquires but an instant. Thus, in what I like to call the Great Asymmetry, every spectacular incident of evil will be balanced by 10,000 acts of kindness, too often unnoted and invisible as the “ordinary” efforts of a vast majority.”
— Stephen Jay Gould
Thank you, AKM
and spouse, also, too,
for putting this transition in perspective.
“In the end they always fail.” All we have to do is wait for his indictment. What I don’t understand is how they get away with giving voters misinformation. It should be a considered a criminal act to robo call voters and tell them if they signed the petition they don’t have to vote. Anyone that would stoop that low is not trustworthy enough to be a public servant.
