Open Thread for Anything But Dan Sullivan
It was Friday night until recently, and for those of you who are as up to your eyeballs in Dan Sullivan as I am, here’s an open thread to start the weekend and talk about other stuff. After today, I truly believe if I hear the name Dan Sullivan again my brain will start bleeding.

hubby and I cut fruit juice with Club Soda (Me moreso than he). Less sweet and more festive.
Of course, sometimes we substitute champagne for Club Soda!
Pomegranate juice mimosas are very pretty. And think of all the antioxidants!
I live very close to the border so I can get “manteca” in a lot of stores. I have some Farmer John brand in the refrigerator. I bought it in the meat section where it was kept cold. It doesn’t say anything on the package about being “hydrogenated”. Just “saturated fat”. No transfat either. The lard isn’t exactly a solid like Crisco. It’s sort of gummy. Not quite as soft as icing or pudding. There is an Iowa Meat Farms down the hill that has a butcher’s counter. They have free range chicken and grass fed beef. I could ask if they supply lard as well.
Here’s what I’ve found:
1. Butter contains about 20% less fat and calories per ounce than lard or saturated vegetable fat, because it contains some water. (When substituting butter for other fats, adjust quantities accordingly.)
2. All of these products contain a mixure of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats. Lard actually contains the least amount of saturated fat (11g per ounce) while coconut oil contains the most (24g per ounce).
3. Animal fats (lard and butter) contain more monounsaturated fat than palm kernel and coconut oil. In fact, lard contains more monounsaturated fats (13mg per ounce) than saturated fats (11g per ounce).
4. Butter contains twice as much cholesterol (60mg per ounce) as lard (27mg per ounce). Vegetable shortenings contain no cholesterol.
5. Lard contains 280mg of omega-3 fatty acids per ounce; butter has 88mg per ounce. (Palm kernel and coconut oil contain little or no omega-3s).
6. Butter contains a fair amount of vitamin A (700mg per ounce) whereas palm kernel oil contains a good helping of vitamin K (7mcg per ounce).
7. Both palm kernel and coconut oils contain natural phytosterols, which can help to reduce cholesterol levels by blocking the cellular uptake of cholesterol.
Apparently there is no good Crisco. Even the new stuff is bad for you. And it’s not so much the kind of fat you eat but how much. One slice of double crust pie (not including the filling) is about 80% of your daily allowance of fat.
All in all, I think lard is a lot more natural than Crisco. And butter more natural than margarine. Olive oil more natural than canola oil.
Well, if I can’t get the non-hydrogenated stuff, it’s apparently not that difficult to render it yourself. I’ll bet that butcher at Iowa Meat Farms can get me plenty of hog fat if I request it. And it keeps for up to 6 months in the refrigerator. You can also freeze it.
@mlaiuppa–turns out that lard isn’t actually as bad for you as all sorts of other fats, IF you can find some that completely non-hydrogenated. I don’t think any of the commercially available stuff in the US is, although Maple Leaf in Canada makes one that is, if you know anyone there who can bring/send you some. Otherwise, check around for a local farm that raises pigs that might make their own and sell it or check the internet. There are a number of places that ship real lard. Also, there are directions on the “‘tubes” for how to make your own, as well as info on how it’s not actually as bad for you as everyone thinks (and yes, I actually use lard (and bacon fat and lamb fat and real butter and suet)).

However, the swallows are back! And the sparrows and the juncos and the chickadees and the Stellar’s jays and the hummers! We’re putting out a feeder for those dears tomorrow.
Whoa, I feel healthier just READING this blog thread! Makes me think I should plant vegetables, but if I did that I’d have to a) root out flowers, and b) weed. I’ve been working on finishing a lot of old business this past week. I’ve got two of my books up for sale on Amazon right now, and two more headed that way in the near future, and the edits back on my second novel. Nothing that shows, but it’s all stuff I’ve been working on for twenty years now–time to get it out the door so I can sit back and enjoy my skyrocking credit card interest rates AND the upcoming audit (yep, the state has decided this is a good year to have me dig back into the dim and hazy mists of two years ago and just see how honest I was). Ugh. But hey–I’ve read about vegetables. That has to count for something!
I will say that I kept 3 orchids blooming for 9 months which I had bought about a year ago (and then my mom came over and cut them!) I bought a new one and am caring for the old three and hope that they come back, too.

Heh, heh … been there done that. One year I planted lots of carrots thinking they’d be small and stubby. They were huge and really good, not woody or anything. I canned 42 quarts and gave away just about that much. Also that year, I left a row in the ground over winter and covered heavily with mulch. In the spring, there were good carrots to harvest!
OK you green thumbs, I was happy that I got my African violet to bloom without violet food! UNTIL I READ THIS! I have salt spraying the plants that were doing so well when it was raining and the hose water has different salts…bummer.

This reminds me of my mom’s next door neighbor, who when she moved in from the San Fernando Valley (much hotter there), planted tomato plants and then asked my mom to can them.
My mom said, “Why do you have so many?”
“I planted 24 plants.”
“Why did you plant so many?”
“I thought some would die.”
Everyone of the plants lived, and she didn’t do that again.

We own our property, but the soil is all sand and gravel, and we’re not quite ready yet to start composting and building up the soil. So I grow a few plants in old discarded TIRES! I stack them two deep and line them with plastic – with drain holes in the bottom of the plastic – then fill with good soil. You can grow quite a bit in each set of tires. I usually have tomatoes (cherry only, since we have a short season), peppers (early), small winter squash (Gold Nugget is really good), and different kinds of greens & herbs.
Some other folks in our town grow in tires too, and then even paint them to go with their outdoor decor. I’m not that fancy.

Yep. Been using olive oil for a few years now. I actually have made cakes and baked goods with olive oil instead of canola or other oils. If you use extra virgin, you can’t taste that it’s olive oil. I would like to find a much better quality of oil, though. I’ve been reading up on it and apparently the stuff we get in the U.S. is quite adulterated compared with really good, pure olive oil.
As bad as lard is, I’m considering using that instead of Crisco. I don’t use it that often or that much of it. Our ancestors used it for centuries. So did my grandparents who both lived well into their 90s.
We have better medical treatment than our grandparents, yet our lifespans aren’t longer. Could it be because we’re eating more processed food? More sodium? More corn syrup? More “pretend” food?
I’ve been eating more yoghurt lately too. Mostly because I have coupons. When you have to buy 10 at a time, you eat a lot of yoghurt. I’ve also been drinking milk for breakfast every morning, rather than skipping breakfast. I can’t do the ol’ bacon and eggs without heaving. But I can manage some milk and a breakfast bar or other baked good.
I’m lucky my parents have more land than I had do a large garden every year. I can get local in season from them. I am going to try to expand my little bit of dirt this year. Last summer I supplied them with tomatoes. This winter they gave me lettuce. A friend gave them more cucumbers than they could handle and I got some of them too. One year I had so many tomatoes I canned them. I want to do that again.
I’m even using lump charcoal instead of briquettes in the ol’ BBQ. I’ll never go back to Kingsford again. Don’t even use lighter fluid. I have a chimney thing that works with paper.

mlaiuppa, good for you on the avoid-corn-syrup thing. And the avoiding sodas and syrupy fruit drinks thing. And margarine thing. My body, for some reason, does not take well to canola oil – don’t ask me what I had to go through to figure it out, only that did not involve being in the hospital (thank God) but did involve being in the bathroom a lot. And now that so many dressings and margarine products are made with it … nope, I’m a big non-margerine fan too!
As for soda, I haven’t drunk one, diet or non-diet for quite a long time, and really have no desire to. In fact, once, when I did maybe a year or so ago, it gave me an upset tummy, as though something was burning the linings of my stomach.
So yea for you and be strong in you commitment. It really is not that hard to avoid the things you mention. Go You!
I also try to buy local produce whenever I can. And I am SOOOOOOOO jealous of you all with your gardens. I love the theory of a garden but have never had much success. Of course, I have never been and probably never will be a homeowner, but I would at least like to grow something edible in pots or boxes, like radishes, which love (currently renting a house with spouse). Any hints? I live in So. Fla. near a Home Depot and many good nurseries. Oh, landlord is an organic gardener himself and the property is ALL trees and flowering plants, no vacant soil. We have a small but much appreciated wooden deck (and a grill!) in the back where my radishes could live.

My raspberry bushes are covered with baby raspberries. My chard and kale are just an inch high (from seed). My tomato plants have flowers on them. I’ve been eating my asparagus. My strawberries are blooming. My roses are blooming. My hawthorn tree is blooming. Shallots and chives are blooming. Herbs out of control. Poppies going crazy. Lilies almost ready to bloom. Scarlet flax is up (from seed). Yarrow getting ready to bloom. Columbines going crazy. Penstemon blooming. Calendula blooming. Cinararia and rununculus blooming. Petunias blooming. Lavender blooming. Oriental poppies blooming. Geraniums and lilacs blooming. Sweet peas 10″ tall. Cherry tree blooming. Freesia blooming. Azaleas blooming. Primrose blooming. Nemesia blooming.
Our new president and first lady are such good role models. We are all eating better, thinking of exercise, being frugal, and going for more education. (And better spousal and family relationships.)

Don’t forget the olive oil. I even use it with popcorn. Also maple sugar. I use it as a sugar replacement often … especially in custards like rice or bread pudding.
Make your own yogurt and flavor with good stuff or drain and make cheese and flavor that.

Update on the Produce Sale at Central Lutheran: It’s various starts for your garden, and flowering hanging baskets, and herbs. So I bought herbs today.
I’ve made a decision. (A little late for New Year’s but what the heck.)
What’s bad for animals is also bad for me.
If it’s bad for cows and pigs to have a constant diet of corn and have to be pumped full of antibiotics to prevent disease because corn is an un-natural diet for them, it’s probably not good for me either.
I don’t eat a lot of kernel corn. An occasional cob. But….I understand that corn syrup is in a lot of stuff.
I’m going to start reading labels. The first thing to do is any soda or fruit juice that has high fructose corn syrup in it. I attended a meeting the other night and they had Hansen’s fruit soda there. No corn syrup. Sweetened with sugar. Now I know there are those that turn up their noses at sugar. And it’s not exactly natural. But it’s a whole lot better than high fructose corn syrup with is very un-natural. Honey is natural. Fruit is natural. They have fructose in them. So eating fructose isn’t un-natural. But whatever they do to corn to make sugar out of it probably is. I’m fine with natural sugar. I’ll deal with that later.
But for now, no more margarine. I’m going back to butter and just using a little. No more corn syrup. Natural sugar and honey but cutting back on it. No more artificial food products designed to fix whatever. Low fat generally means they pump up the sodium. So I’m not going to eat low fat anymore either. Just… less of the regular stuff. I’d love to start cooking again and making my own “frozen dinners” and baking bread again. But that’s going to have to wait for work to slow down. Maybe I can make a start this summer.
But I can stop consuming high fructose corn syrup now. If it’s on the label, it’s not going in my shopping cart.
The goldfinches are back! Flying daffodils. And I saw a red-winged blackbird yesterday; be still, my heart: We have survived, yet, another year to see this glorious spring emerge from the depths of a dormant winter. And I’m getting $250 from the feds in my SS check this month! do not think of bills today, do not think of bills today, do not…
I am just now taking a break from mowing my lawn….. one one hand, I’m thrilled that it’s warm and sunny and that I have grass… on the other hand, I know this is the start of weekly mowing for an hour!
My lilacs just busted out over the last 48 hours…my daffodils are going by, and my perennials are looking great! Can’t wait for my gardens to be in full bloom. It’s lovely in my yard when that happens. I think I have *counting on fingers and toes* 12 gardens. Yikes, I’m out of control!!!

the gardening thing, I’ve been enjoying it for weeks now. I love workin in the yard and garden. Got seeds going inside. Sweet peas outside are up 10″, lettuce and spinache are up. We’ve eaten our first batch of asparagus, delish!
Little tiny peaches and nectarines are growin. Apple tree’s are finishing blooming. Strawberries are in bloom.
My gosh, the herbs are huge! I’m really surprised how early they came back, I hadn’t even expected them to over winter, lemon balm, thyme, oregano, basil anyone? Chives are blooming already.
And yes, the mowing is back too, about ready for the third trim. Weeds, are thriving nicely, iris and peonies are about ready to bloom.
I love spring!
Humming birds showed up 4 days ago, cardinals and bluebirds too. Wish I had my purple martin house ready.

Wow, I must be doing something right. Our peas are 6 inches high, snow peas & cucumbers are popping, grape vines blooming, strawberry plants flowering, lettuce almost ready for a first cutting, spinach following in 2nd place. Red onions are beating the white onions by over an inch, raished are open, beets have broken ground. You guys will have to come to our place for the first garden luncheon! Yummy!

Spring is in the air ~
I am sooo tempted to uncover my strawberry plants that wintered under a blanket of straw. I will admit to peeking last week to see how they weathered.
The lovely green leaves hiding under the straw are beginning to stretch their leaves in search of sunlight, not just warmth.
Patience – couple more weeks and we can be sure that Old Man Winter has completed his season and receded further North.

Guiness really is good for you. I donated blood during a drive in Dublin, and afterwards, a nurse came around with little cups of Guiness on a tray for us, so we could regain our strength.

Ha ha! Looks a lot like downtown Juneau. All you Alaskan cities look the same. I’ve only been to Ketchikan once, briefly, while waiting for a plane.
Our coastal towns in Wash, OR, and northern Cali all kind of look the same too.

Seriously, that came from a 100 % reliable source who was there and present re: her trying to schedule meetings in the late afternoon because she was to tired in the morning. They all knew in the legis. that she was up all hours reading the blogs and seeing what they were saying about her.
Over on Halcro’s blog during the campaign we had an individual that knew exactly what was going on during the campaign and would boast about it and defend Gino. I thought it was her father or the Dud, but now I am wondering if it was Gino herself. Now this addy has moved on over to the Alaska Standard and left Halcro’s site a few months ago. @Aussie Blue Sky – on the Mission Accomplished story…my take then and now is that someone who goes awol doesn’t deserve to wear the uniform…and I don’t if the Supreme Court *did* declare him president. BTW, did you know that the service men and women on that ship, on their way home from serving a hitch, were held out at sea for several extra days so the man appointed pres. could posture in a uniform he wasn’t fit to wear? oooh, don’t get me started.

Add to that yesterday’s failure of the Senate to approve the bill to help homeowners avoid foreclosure due to the fact that the Senate is owned by the banking lobby (which we, the American taxpayers, have bailed out).
And the continual assertions I hear from media talking heads that we really need the truth to come out about the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld torture program, but that there won’t be any prosecutions.
Really, we might as well just continue to drink. Kool Aid, Guinness, don’t matter. As long as we stay stupid.

I’ve always loved that one postcard in the black and white Alaska series that shows people in Juneau freaking out like Godzilla was there because the sun was out. Sunzilla.
What a beautiful week of incrediable weather we have been having here in Alaska! Down here in southeast Alaska the weather report is stating we may see record high temps. today.
Word out of the legis. Gino is a lame duck and has pi$$ed off way too many in the legis. to get any votes for her pet projects. A few days before she took off on her little jaunt and left WAR high and dry, she was remote and barely there. Of course one of the many reasons would be….she was up all hours of the night reading the blogs and could not make it to early morning meetings. Seriously…she was pouring over the blogs and would try to schedule meetings late in the afternoon, because she was tired?
For those of you who have never been to Alaska, I wish you could see how incrediable it is here when the sun shines. It’s absolutely breathtaking and a good reminder to me that on days like today, there’s no place like Alaska.
I’ll have a pint, please! Don’t know about Dan but we just returned from a whirlwind tour of Southern Ireland and I LOVE Guinness! Mother’s milk! Hope you got rested.
