Palin Galluping Off the Chart
In these days of political woe and want, when fiscal cliffs, and debt ceilings, and oil rig groundings get us down, there’s really nothing like another little piece of confirmation that Sarah Palin is slipping into oblivion to make us at Mudflats central clonk our coffee mugs together and smile. It doesn’t really mean anything, but it’s still nice. It’s like the empty calories from a butterscotch candy.
So, here’s one.
Every year since the 1940s, Gallup has done a poll asking Americans two simple questions: What man/woman that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire most? And who is your second choice? And thus, the pulse of the nation is taken, and we get a quick snapshot of who springs to the mind of the American collective when they think of their fellow humans who are important, relevant, admirable people.
It shouldn’t surprise us that despite the obsessive right wing loathing that has followed her ever since she had the audacity and uppity-ness to be a strong First Lady, the most admired woman of 2012 was Hillary Clinton. She’s been put through the Republican wringer more times than we can count, but has risen above the fray. She has been named the most-admired woman for a record 17 times since she became a national figure back in 1992. Eleanor Roosevelt had previously held the record, named 13 times as the most-admired woman.
But, back to our little piece of candy. Sarah Palin continues her steady plummet off the charts. In case you were unaware, Sarah Palin used to be governor here in the state of Alaska, but she decided she’d rather write books and star in TV shows, and go on Fox News where she opened and closed her mouth while making sound for money, so she quit. Why she has not become utterly unadmired by this point is still a mystery, but her trajectory is true and clear, and it mercifully points straight down.
In 2009, Palin was nipping at Clinton’s heels for most admired status with 15% of the vote to Clinton’s 16%. It was a scary year, but she never did surpass our Secretary of State, sparing future generations of Americans who look at the results of the poll the humiliation of knowing they are part of a species that put Palin on top of that list.
The top five for 2012 fell out like this: Clinton tops the list with 21%, followed by Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Condoleeza Rice. Palin shares fifth place with Queen Elizabeth II, Malala Yousefzai, and Margaret Thatcher, all with 2%.
Completely off the chart this year is Palin’s political twin (only with elected office), Michele Bachmann.
Barack Obama has some catching up to do if he wants to break records, but he was named most admired man for the fifth time in a row. Dwight Eisenhower holds the record, named 12 times.President Obama had 30 percent of the vote, followed by Nelson Mandela, Mitt Romney, the Reverend Billy Graham, George W. Bush, and Pope Benedict XVI.
You can see the full results of the poll HERE. I have a good feeling about next year.
While I cannot deny a certain amount of chagrin when I consider the fact that Sarah Palin is tied with a young girl who nearly died for the opportunity to educate herself, I am delighted that Honey Boo-Boo is not in the top five. I seem to have a smidgen of hope left for humanity.
When the dark mountain that contains the cave of the Monkey Queen and her mindless minions is finally sealed shut for all times, we’ll all have to get together virtually, for a toast…
It would be attended by LOTS of folks… From all over the planet, that were lucky enough to find the Mudflats to tell them the TRUTH about this stain on American rationality…
Thank you very much Mud. If it weren’t for you and your tenacious pals, things could have been a LOT different. We owe you a great deal…..
Slipstream is not tenacious. Slipstream is, at best, sevenacious.
Sarah who?
the sign of her insignificance is how few comments are made on articles about her. remember when it used to be different? now, she barely raises an iota of interest. hahaha
Humankind has tried for decades to eliminate contagious diseases-with little real progress. Just saying.
Actually meant infectious diseases.
Mike — imho, contageous and infectious both work, when it comes to that woman. One nasty piece, she is. beth.
Ummm…. so who is Sarah tied with?
The Queen of England – what can you say?
Margaret Thatcher – research chemist, barrister, first and only female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom as well as the longest serving PM of the 20th Century (11 years).
Malala Yousefzai – started campaigning for rights for girls in the Swat Valley when she was 11. Continued publicly campaigning despite threats to her life. Gravely wounded in an assassination attempt when she was 15. Winner of Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize, nominated by Desmond Tutu for the International Children’s Peace Prize.
then, of course,
Sarah Palin – youngest person and first woman elected as Governor of Alaska. Quit after 1/2 a term. First woman nominated by the Republican Party to become Vice President, only to then destroy her party’s chance at the White House by her inability to articulate a coherent sentence, let alone policy statement. Has apparently retired to appear on reality TV and shop in Arizona.
only because the Queen gave birth to a child out of wedlock in 1966…even a Church in Anchorage named after her…so anyways now that the information is global that has the Queen in a panic to attend meetings…
That won’t work anymore either…it’s all coming undone now and galluping off to jail many will be going…
Pretty bad when the child she gave up rocked the Catholic Church when Murkowski reversed the Statutes of Limitations in 2003…and now that Russia is in carnal knowledge of this dirty deed what did that do to adoptions??? Gotta love those ties hu Sarah? hows that working for ya nowadays? Mum’s the word…
No one that I know would ever think to include Sarah Palin on any kind of list of “most admirers.” But then the Gallup poll is skewed toward the Republican side so I guess this means that Republicans don’t want to be reminded of her existence anymore. Someone in Wasilla should give her a job, maybe at Walmart as a bagger or greeter.
I don’t like to shop at WalMart, but if I saw her as a greeter, I would run the other way!
Can you just imagine seeing her face with her fake smile and insincere manner………greeting you with a cart…………..? Nope……….
