Open Thread – MudMouse!

~~MudMouse~~

~~MudMouse~~

I thought I’d introduce you to one of the other inhabitants of Mudflats Central.  It’s MudMouse.  Often it is the squeaky sound of the spinning of the mouse wheel that is the background noise while I type posts, particularly in the evening.  Mudmouse has a pretty good life.  He’s generally either sleeping in his little hut, gorging himself on seeds or Wasa Rye Crispbread, or running a zillion miles an hour on his wheel.  He’ll get the wheel going and then all of a sudden he clamps his little toes around the wire, and takes the thing for a wild ride.  I’m sure he’s figured out how to keep it going because in his youth, we counted him spinning around upside down on the wheel for 34 revolutions.  I’m not kidding.  Now a days, he’ll do 6 or 7.

MudMouse is a rescue mouse.  A feral mouse from an undisclosed location whose days would surely have been numbered if it were not for a couple particularly kind-hearted souls in my house.  So Mudmouse came home with us last November.  Knowing the brief time upon the Earth to which most mice are bound, I’ve tried not to become too attached to MudMouse. That plan met with abject failure.  He’s quite  a nice, and amusing little fellow.

Anyway, MudMouse is not his real name.  But, because I have a staunch policy of not “outing” anyone’s identity, he will remain….. Anonymouse.  (You knew that was coming)

That looks like a pen to me unless blackberries got smaller.

I’m beginning to think Donald Trump is losing his grip. First, he makes Joan Rivers his apprentice. And now Miz Prejean keeps her title.
    ————-
The Donald is a ‘loser”! he’s shallow, objectifies women…being ruthless, cut-throat, & a bully in business does not make you intelligent!
additional photos surfaced of miss california (damn those photographers! – “it was between takes and it was windy”) …THEN WHY ARE YOU STARING RIGHT INTO THE CAMERA?!!!…more hypocrisy…more lying…it’s so commonplace anymore…like a genetic flaw.

I had to laugh when I read comment #8 at TMZ. 😀
    It reads:
” Wh*re. I can’t wait to hear what these religious fanatics who keep defending this girl have to say now. You have a sl*t as a spokesperson. That really lends to your credibility.
Sl*ts against gay marriage! Unwed mothers for abstinence! You conservatives really know how to pick your leaders. Get a clue.”

Cronyism. Most of the people in her administration she went to school with or are her neighbors, church members, etc. Now they are in a place of power, if they should go against the queen, they will lose their job..ie: power.
    Sickening isn’t it???
    ——————
Y E S !!! it is sickening! …she should have never been allowed to get away with sitting unqualified people in a power position! …no way to infiltrate her circle unless they break their silence and loyalty.
maybe we should be checking THEIR bank statements, house renovations, per diem, back taxes, etc! monkey see, monkey do

Thanks for the pic – LOL. I had a receptionist come to me one day to complain the guys weren’t taking her seriously. She was dressed about like that. I felt bad having to explain that while she had a great figure for it, it was more appropriate for a Friday or Saturday night out at the bar. Sure enough, she started wearing more clothes to work and the guys started looking at her face and listening when she spoke.

So sorry to hear of tragic events for the 3 sisters.

Using the OT thread to express my dee-light (NOT) that 27 Dem Senators joined 39 Repubs to legalize carrying handguns in national parks. WTF? One of those stealth amendments on the credit card restriction bill. We have 3 national parks in my state, and I hate to think of people carrying HANDGUNS in them. Gonna go ask Mr. Google if my senators were among the 27.

Aha, another finger in Alaskan’s eyes…one for you and you and you and…YOU

Might as well let her do it, then file another ethics complaint. If you file too early, she’ll just practice abstinence and pull out early and claim she never received any money…yet.

Doesn’t her admission of having ”after hours” help one of the other already filed complaints in the complainant’s favor. I can’t remember which one off the top of my head (maybe one where she left the state to run for v.p.)

Henning alleged that the governor used her official position and office for partisan political purposes because she conducted interviews with reporters in the Atwood Building in Anchorage on November 7, 2008, and again on November 10, during which the recent vice presidential campaign was discussed. After what he called an “exhaustive review” of the ensuing news reports, Geraghty concluded: “There was no indication that Governor Palin presented her official position as governor of the State of Alaska for an improper personal or financial purpose.”

Martin alleged that the governor and aide Kris Perry violated the ethics act during a trip to Georgia in which the governor campaigned for Senator Saxby Chambliss. Geraghty concluded: “The (ethics) act does not prohibit a public official from engaging in political pursuits independent of their position as a public officer, and the campaign efforts undertaken by Governor Palin are not prohibited by the act.”

Palin signs book deal! Says it’s going to be written by herself and she’ll be telling the REAL story unfiltered by the mainstream media. She’s happy to be able to put good use to her journalism degree.
    ———————-

Her timing of announcing the book deal is odd. Thought she was busy dealing with the flooding disaster.

Given she doesn’t understand the 1st amendment, I’d say her journalism degree might be worthless.

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/10/palin-fears-med.html

SP’s idea of “unfiltered by the mainstream media” means she can lie, mislead and exaggerate without being questioned. Also…she probably believes that using either a ghostwriter, a collaborator or an editor working from recorded interviews means the same thing as “written by herself”.

I’m not even curious what she will write and will not be buying the book or borrowing it from the library.

OMG; I can’t believe those shoes!!! Also, too, her skirt is too tight, imo; you can see the outline of her thigh.

Here is a link to another picture–smaller, but you can see the shoes better.
    http://gov.state.ak.us/large_photo.php?id=299
Any woman who wore those shoes in my presence would have ZERO credibility to me. Unbelievable!!!

I am an attorney and carefully choose clothes to wear for work. I wear fun clothes when NOT at work, but I am careful to look professional while working.

Any person who thinks those shoes (and the skirt) are appropriate to wear to work (much less as the GOVERNOR!!!) is CRAZY. (of course we knew that)

  92. InJuneau says:

This from the HuffPo piece was priceless:

Palin’s book will address, and complicate, the push-pull between home and public life. With the release date just one year away, the governor will have to work quickly. Barnett said that the governor has formed an outline in her mind, but has yet to start writing. Burnham said Palin did not submit any writing samples when she met with HarperCollins executives in Washington, earlier this year. She will work with a collaborator, to be determined.

“She’s obviously going to be engaged in the whole process of the book,” said Burnham, adding that the role of the collaborator would depend on who was chosen.

“Every word of the book will be her words,” Barnett said.

How are the Alaska State statutes going to apply to the governor? Will she have to resign to write?

    Alaska law says:

    AS 39.52.170. Outside Employment Restricted.
    (a) A public employee may not render services to benefit a personal or financial interest or engage in or accept employment outside the agency which the employee serves, if the outside employment or service is incompatible or in conflict with the proper discharge of official duties.
    (b) A public employee rendering services for compensation, or engaging in employment outside the employee’s agency, shall report by July 1 of each year the outside services or employment to the employee’s designated supervisor. During the year, any change in an employee’s outside service or employment activity must be reported to the designated supervisor as it occurs.
    (c) The head of a principal executive department of the state may not accept employment for compensation outside the agency that the executive head serves.
    =================================================
I would think that (c) would kill it for her. What happens if hundreds of people file an ethics complaint over the same thing? 11 million WOW!

Gindy, thanks for your comment, although I wasn’t suggesting that AKM try to live in a bubble. LOL Apparently the Washington State Health Dept succeeded in drilling the message into my head while I lived in the state. Their message went something like this: wild mice=hantavirus. Hantavirus=fatal illness in 50% of cases. Therefore wild mice=dangerous animals. That’s the simplistic, boiled down version, but that’s the general idea. More people have died from hantavirus in the US than Swine Flu or SARS combined. After I had quickly posted that comment this morning, I did check it out further, and no cases of hantavirus illness or death have been reported in Alaska. We all know that the Palin administration is sure doing an excellent job so we can be certain that those statistics are correct. 😉 There have been only 6 cases in British Columbia, so it doesn’t sound like there is much cause for alarm. I have to admit that I would refuse to allow my kids to adopt a wild rodent as a pet, just because the fear is so ingrained in me. We currently have about a dozen tadpoles that were rescued from a local swimming pool . . . that’s about as wild as we get around here.

It’s the first one I’ve seen on our property since we moved in, by the time I got something to kill it with it was gone, now I think it’s in my strawberry bed or under the deck, dang! The previous owners 2 dogs got bit by one, they had to be put down.

Be brave my soul……I was just headed out to mow. I don’t like poisonous snakes or poisonous spiders!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska’s rank in a rating of states’ ethics laws is declining, and stands at 40th.

The list comes from the Better Government Association, which ranked all the states based on the strength of their ethics laws as of 2008.

The association says the strongest ethics laws are in New Jersey, followed by Rhode Island, Hawaii, Washington state and Louisiana.

The Better Government Association also did the ranking in 2002. Alaska was ranked 23rd then

  211. Hmmm, the mouse is, erm . . . cute. But not in my house. I’ve had dogs, cats, birds (when I was little because my dad liked them), a chicken (in the house – yeah, weird, I know), and a rabbit. The rabbit was last and she was as much of a rodent as I’ll ever have for a pet.

Ethics complaint filed against Palin staffers McCallister and Perry

    Mon, January 26, 2009
Posted in Alaska News, Top Stories

An outspoken critic of Gov. Sarah Palin has filed ethics complaints against two of the governor’s top aides, saying they misused their official positions for Palin’s personal and political gain. Anchorage resident Andree McLeod filed the complaints today with Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg. Named are Bill McAllister, Palin’s press secretary, and Kris Perry, the governor’s top aide in Anchorage. McLeod maintains the two worked on State time to benefit Palin’s interests during and after her Vice Presidential quest.

Do you realize it’s been 9 MONTHS!!! since Andree filed a request for emails they withheld and she still hasn’t gotten them…….WHY? this is getting ridiculous, is THIS why she’s racking up legal fee’s? Because she has a lawyer going through all these to see if anything in them is gonna bite her in the backside?

I wonder if any of the many news organizations that requested emails (before the election and didn’t get them) are still trying. Maybe somebody should check on that, I can’t remember who was waiting but there were quite a few.

Mudpuppies emailing the FBI should ask if those VERY high fee quotes for supplying the emails are legit or a form of price gouging and bully tactics meant to put off requests.

Speaking of my son, (of whom Austintx was speaking) and of rodents, I just remembered when he was bout 2 1/2 and we were living in FL, he had been talking about his friend Charlie, whom we all took to be an imaginary friend. He was out playing in the back yard in just shorts one day, and when he came in, he had scratches on his shoulder. I asked where he got them, and he said “Charlie”. I suggested we go see Charlie, and he pointed to a squirrel in a nearby tree. I nearly collapsed. When we were in Homer, my husband tamed a squirrel to eat out of his hand, and, of course, we had to name him “Charlie”.

UK Lady, I’m dying with laughter. I used to torture my mom by bring home salamanders as pets. They would get loose and then she would find their dry, shriveled bodies when she cleaned house. I would also bring back crabs from the beach. My parents got so they would check my pockets at the beach, which were of course always filled with crabs. I would also bury roadkilled snakes and other creatures. Had an entire little graveyard of roadkill with popsicle-stick crosses.

K8KZ, I LOVE that poem! I think there are even pet cards with it and cool illustrations.

rebekkah, preying mantises are such fascinating pets. I learned the hard way though that ants are their mortal enemies. I thought they would be food, and I found our preying mantis cornered by all of the “food” ants. Well I killed those mean ants and apologized to the mantis by feeding it some raw ground beef.

  224. LiladyNY says:

Anonymouse – LOL! Good one. With three kids, we had quite a menagerie of small “critters” when they were growing up (as compared to a slightly smaller menagerie now that they’re adults). We had a white lab rat (also a rescue) whom we named Leif the Lucky. He was sweet and affectionate and we had him for about a year. I believe the stress of his previous life shortened his life span. We have a pet cemetery in the back yard with hamsters, parakeets, fish, frogs, and our beloved guinea pig, Hugo, as well as several cats and the ashes of two dogs. The experience of caring (for a lifetime) for a pet or pets is so enriching and such a benefit so children can learn compassion and empathy for the small and helpless and receive the boundless, unconditional love of another creature. A child who grows up without caring for a pet, even a goldfish, is, I believe, as lacking as a child who grows up without books.

My son came home and pleaded with me to adopt a “preyiing mantis” bug. Biology teacher was overcome with a batch of babies in the school lab. I relented saying, to my son (12 years) as long as you take care of it. Well, we all know what that means. “I” became the caretaker, making a cute terrarium, filled with rocks, branches, a little watering hole. I would catch little tiny flies with a little glass jar outside my house and neighbors must have thought I was ready for the nuthouse. But, I grew attached to “Manty” and this little insect knew my voice and would dance a little dance in the morning when I’d come downstairs, cause he knew he was getting breakfast.

Really fascinating all God’s creatures. I probably would give in and take care of a mouse too.

I love all animals. We were adopted by a kitten last winter who wondered into our horse barn and although somewhat ferrel, has been a nice kitty. However, she is a mouser and brings home her kill to make a present to us. It reminds me of an old Kliben the Kat poem:

  242. womanwithsardinecan says:

I used to raise rats. It all started with four rats I got for a nutrition project in HS. I decided that it was mean to feed a couple of them a bad diet, so I dumped the project. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough cages, and the little buggers began to breed. At one point I had 35 rats, all with squeaky play wheels. At night they would keep me awake, running on their wheels and chewing on walnut shells. I also had a pet mouse I named Eddie. Eddie got loose one day in our old Victorian house and began consorting with the local girls. I never did catch Eddie. He liked his life in the walls.
But I was hooked. I once had a “scented” rat. If you have ever had one, the top of its head has an incense smell. I named her Jasmine. I also had a rat named Ratty. He would ride on our shoulders. I used to sneak him onto the bus, hidden under my collar.
I finally had to give up rats. The short lifespan was too painful to deal with.

I used to catch mice when I was 4-5 yrs in the grain barrels (for chickens) and made them pets in quart canning jars. Now, 60 yrs later I trap them in “mice cubes” and transport them back to the fields outside. It’s a never ending parade, one August I deported 26 of the little buggers. If anyone out there prefers, I could ship them to you.

  248. Jamie says:

AKM, truly a riot and quite brilliant!

We had a white rat named Pixie that would hoist her rear end up and pee outside the cage onto the kids’ bedroom floor. Needless to say, she got banished to the garage and she became my responsibility as no one wanted to trek downstairs to feed her or, heaven help us, clean her cage. I spent lots of time staring at and watching her and came to recognize her various moods and forms of communication. Quite fun to watch, but I came to prefer having a pet that did not need to be caged.

  249. Ripley in CT says:

HA! Saw that coming, in a flaming orange vest!

I rescued a rat from my rat lab in college. She was the “control rat” whilst the others had surgeries of various and sundry varieties. I couldn’t save them all, but I could save one!!

I second your statements, Tiredmom. Our first rodential pet, Glacier a white rat, taught us more about tolerance and humanity than any church or parochial school could ever have done. Humility was her greatest gift to us and we use it every day as we transform our Indiana farm to a wildlife sanctuary.
Maggie, any animal can carry any disease. Living in a bubble is not an option. Using good hygiene (washing hands, cage, cleaning bedding) is important no matter what species we share our lives with. My horses were more trouble than any, lining outside all the time. A house mouse, if kept properly, will no more harm you than a stuffed toy.

Certainly has the physique of a runner.

    Cute photo!

I am concerned, though, AKM, about Anonymouse’s wild past. I was under the impression that wild rodents are very hazardous to have as pets. Can Alaskan mice carry hantaviruses?

    Please stay healthy.

awwwww — we had several mice and rats over the years. One white mouse named Spike was a “pinky” meant to be fed to a snake…. oldest daughter rescued him from his fate when the snake didn’t take the first bite because he had a small spike of white hair on his head. He was my hubby’s bestest little pal for three years. He squeaked “thank you” (two squeaks) when we gave him potato chips, and when we went mouse fishing … long spaghetti noodle dangling in cage, and he would stand up and eat it. He always came out of the hut and rattled the cage wires when we came home from work. He was the best little pet, and we were heart-broken when he passed away. But he taught us so much about life in his own little way. We were never able to keep any fish we caught after he passed … we realized that all the earth’s little creatures (especially mice) have feelings and emotions. I assume he has now taken his rightful place on Kenny’s shoulder, maybe he won’t pee on him now – LOL
