Now that it appears that Spring may actually happen, I thought it might be helpful to make ourselves a little checklist so we can chart our progress. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some key indicators, so feel free to leave some in the comments if you think of anything I’ve overlooked.
This is only my personal list, so others may have witnessed some of these things. I’m only counting the things I’ve seen personally at Mudflats Central, elevation 1100 feet above sea level.

‘Tis the season!
Yesterday at this time, there was ice on the driveway river. Today… not!
A raven rummages around, and comes up with a couple dead leaves and a gum wrapper.
…and heads off with nesting material, although the image didn’t capture it.

Just saw my first Baltimore Oriole(buck) at 6 a.m. mikey time,May 9th,2013. 49 degrees and mostly cloudy. High near 70 and got to mow. Saw first deer tracks on gravel road yesterday. They migrate east to the river/timber valleys for the winter and choose mikey’s place to have their little ones.
NYC, East Village edition: Opening tree bud-YES. Flower-YES, in profusion. Stays above freezing at night-YES. Bear-NO. Baby moose-NO. Tour bus-YES. Carwash-YES, but not in my neighborhood. Swallow-NO. Mosquito-YES. Butterfly-YES. Robin-YES, in February, on an ice bank around the corner from home. Green leaf-YES, everywhere. Can hike to Creek-YES, if one counts the creek in the community garden a block away. Annoying motorhome-NO. Can hike to the Iris Place-YES, it’s right across the street, and they’re blooming right now. Ice free morning-YES on the driveway-NO, have no driveway. End to flooding/puddles-YES, as of yesterday. Seagull in the lowlands-YES. Boat pulled by trailer-NO. Geese-YES. Mud encrusted dog-NO. Dust clouds-NO. Highway garbage cleanup-NO. Creek open at Mudflats Central-N/A. Lichen-NO. Minnesota House of Reps passed the same sex marriage bill today. Senate is expected to pass it Monday and Guv Dayton said he will sign it, people will be allowed to marry same sex partners as early as this summer. Minnesota will be the 12th state to allow gay couples to marry.
Swallows have returned to the low lands.
