Open Thread – Anonymous Blog Commenters Have the REAL Power…

I just had to share with you this piece by Andy Borowitz of The Borowitz Report. If you are not familiar with him, he is truly one of the most brilliant satirists of our day. You can subscribe to his commentary at borowitzreport.com It’s a great read. And I knew you all would get a kick out of this one. Ohhhhh, the power! (All the Mudflatters rub their little hands together like flies)

Obama Braces Self for Wrath of Pajama-Clad Blog Commenters

Anonymous Posts Could Be ‘Really Mean,’ White House Fears

A mood of tension has gripped the White House in recent days as President Obama prepares himself for a new round of criticism from one of the nation’s most powerful and influential constituencies: pajama-wearing Internet users who post anonymous comments on liberal blogs.

In the West Wing, Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel has set up a high-tech “war room” to monitor the blog comments from the President’s basement-dwelling critics, postings which one White House source said could be “really mean” in the days ahead.

“It’s no secret that the President is very worried about what these anonymous blog-commenters might be typing over the next few days,” said the source.  “They are very angry, and they have a lot of time on their hands.”

The source said that the pajama-wearing chorus could grow louder this week “because most of them have already seen Star Trek and they’re back in front of their keyboards.”

“Some of them are so furious they’re not even stopping to use spell-check,” he added.

LiberalCatGirrrrl999, a former Obama supporter who has turned on him in recent days, said that the President ignores her irate, long-winded blog comments at his peril.

“There’s been so much emphasis on the influence of liberal bloggers, the White House has ignored where the real power is: anonymous blog commenters,” she says.  “Hold on, my mom is yelling at me from upstairs.”

    Night UK Man! 🙂

Yes, I do remember sister Violet! and her husband Bruce, also too.

I once had my own personal “Hyacinth” – until she became angry at my politics. It’s been real peaceful around here for the last few years. Thank goodness.

Glad to know I’m not the only Keeping Up Appearances fan here. My father and I have always had a soft spot for Onslow, he being the classiest of the bunch, despite outward appearances.

Speaking of which, c4p is telling themselves the RNC clothes only enhanced haraS image as a down-to-earth middle-class hockey mom. Riiiight. If I were into drugs, I’d want some of what they’ve been smoking.

  4. Aussie Blue Sky says:

    @ sauerkraut & Nan

Onslow is married to Daisy, and Rose is the one with the hot pants. M’sister Violet is married to the ‘turf accountant’ and has a big house “with room for a pony” …

We have a pet magpie named Onslow because he’s fat and lazy. We have another named Princess Margaret, but she’s really a working-class magpie.

  5. mlaiuppa says:

California voters just defeated all of the ballot propositions.

Arnold shouldn’t be surprised. He’s cried wolf so many times no one believes him when it’s really important. Like…now. The only difference is that this time, after crying there is no money and then suddenly finding some…..there really isn’t any money and everything is going to be heavily cut some more. Including schools.

California 48th in the nation but working on being 50th.

  6. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

Lee323…….speak it, lol…..UKMAN “does” have it! gifted with words for sure.

Fight off the flu uckies…….Be strong UKMAN!……..we care about you, and your UKLady, also, too.

  7. Nan says:

Oh, sauerkraut, I think it’s much more of Lionel & Jean (As Time Goes By) than Onslow & Rose, (wasn’t Daisy the lonely sister with a yen for the vicar?)

UKMan, I was reading from your post to my husband, who muttered something about understanding just how you feel. Honestly, the way you menfolk stick together!

Feel free to pull up a chair and settle in. Refreshments are free…

    1. There needs to be a logo and link to Netroots voting on the right side of the Mudflats homepage.

    2. Three suggestions for the Mudflats amazon shop:

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Really excellent book and audio CD. I have both.
    http://www.amazon.com/Art-Racing-Rain-Novel/dp/0061537969/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242785363&sr=1-2

Also by Garth Stein (but I have not read it yet) is Raven Stole the Moon. If it’s as good as The Art of Racing in the Rain, it’s a winner.
    http://www.amazon.com/Raven-Stole-Moon-Garth-Stein/dp/0671004603/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242785363&sr=1-3

Lastly, don’t forget the soundtrack to Northern Exposure. I really, really enjoy this soundtrack, more than any other TV or movie compilation soundtrack CD.
    http://www.amazon.com/Northern-Exposure-Music-Television-1990-95/dp/B000002OMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1242785555&sr=1-1

UK Man……Awwwww! Your heartfelt plea was sweet and charming but has endeared UKLady to me more than ever. Why don’t you join the Mudflats party?

  21. UK Lady says:

    Curioser

Fact checker for that book is a job that will send the checker into therapy for life. It will be an impossible task because Scarah has lied and contradiced herself too many times. Even the facts for when she told her family about the VP shout, she told differing stories as did the Dud. Whatever they put for stuff like this, once it is in print under her name she has to stand by, consequently calling herself a liar.

  22. TBNTJudy says:

UkMan: This is a great community of friends, and we would love for you to join us. Some nights, we have gin and tonics, margaritas, wine, good food, good conversation, and as austintx puts it, “Da blues.” After mixing with us, you can mix 😉 with your UK lady!

Say No @41 “she’s said so many things she can’t keep them straight, lol……how will she write her book? lol will her ghost writer have to fact check then get back to her on what needs “revising” lol……”………………….

Either the work is going to be shoddily done and the book put out anyway, or the massive fact check-recheck process will ensure that the book won’t be out in the timeframe outlined (which seems really short) AND it would aggravate me no end to have to sit there with SP and say, “But at the speech you said X, but in your journal it says you believe Y”. “You say now you called and talked to X, but earlier you said you never called X”.

Anyone want to set odds and place bets?

    ———————-

I haven’t been able to read all the comments so don’t know if others have jointed the bet.

I vote for ‘shoddy’. I am expecting this to be SP unfliltered as of the time of the ‘writing’. Don’t believe there will be any fact-checking at all.

    79 UKMAN Says: May 19th, 2009 at 11:40 AM</b?

Can I have my wife back please?

You’ll have to forgive me – I know virtually nothing about US/Alaskan politics, but you may be familiar with my better half aka UKLADY. I’d better set a little background :

Since Barack Obama and Sarah Palin hove onto her horizon our idyllic life has been rent asunder. Evenings spent sipping gin & tonic and discussing the issues of the day and our perfect love for each other were violently and suddenly ended – she found Mudflats!

Gone were my perfect evenings of gentle romance and intimate teasing, to be replaced by the form of my beautiful wife, hunched over her laptop, dutifully ensuring that the people of Alaska knew they had not been abandoned by the UK populace – alone she struggles to reassure you that you are not forgotten, that we care. From long discussions of love and poetry I am now reduced to monosyllabic grunts as each evening she gives the best of herself to you, and leaves me with the conversational left-overs of “OK!”, “In a minute”, “I’m busy”. . . .

I fully realise that you are all wonderful people, gifted, intelligent, and with more insight than I could ever hope to acquire – how can I compete with that! I’m just a sad, middle-aged old boy, sitting alone at night, gazing at the object of my affection, the love of my life, as each evening she betrays me with hundreds of Alaskan democrats and ignores me (and the dogs) completely.

I’m not so worried for myself you understand, but the dogs miss her dreadfully!

Could you please mount a campaign to convince her that she’s too pretty, too vibrant, too young, too intelligent to be a part of your blogosphere – I’d count it as a personal favour, and the next time I’m in Alaska I’ll buy you all a drink. (OK, OK, I’m probably never going to be in Alaska, but it’s the thought that counts!).

My experience of Americans leads me to believe that you would never willingly lie to get rid of a like-minded fellow world citizen, and that my desperate plea will fall on deaf ears, leaving me a wilderness crying in a voice – but I had to try.

I will leave you now and return to my lonely evening, watching the light of my life attempt to light up the lives of hundreds of people thousands of miles away, and leave you with this final thought –

    I blame Sarah Palin!

While listening to the TrueOldiesChannel.com (it’s a oldies, 50’s-70’s mainly, station that is broadcast in multiple cities, as well as online) simulcast, I heard DJ Scott Shannon talking about Tiny Tim’s “hit” single, Tiptoe Through The Tulips, and of course (d’oh!) had the perfect title come to me…way too late for consideration.

  29. ValleyIndependent says:

UK Lady, I can only presume those who can read choose not to be bothered by such mental exercise. It is so much easier to believe everything you’re told than to take the time and effort to actually fact-check anything.

From the Chicago Tribune’s blog The Swamp:

“Joe Scarborough, the former Republican congressman from Florida who hosts hours of political talk on MSNBC each morning, says the former independent governor of Minnesota and big-time wrestler is fighting out of his weight class in the torture debate.
Ventura ‘should stop smoking whatever he’s been smoking,’ Scarborough said at the anchor’s desk of his Morning Joe show. ‘It seriously should be a crime, to be that dumb on TV.’

    wanting (poster)

egnalag – Thanks for that morality lesson – sorry, hard to understand you as you stand there covered in blood – on a pile of money you did not earn and certainly do not deserve. Perhaps you should stick with something you actually know.

You elected your gay drunken, cowardly, drug snorting sniveling failure of a frat boy – who has failed at everything he has ever tried to do except make sweet love to a man – and with him the most cowardly, bitter, dishonest, adulterous, lying cheat of man who should be charged with treason – and want to lecture us about tax cheats and bimbos. Maybe all you have ever known in your worthless nothing of a life is failures – look at me – I said may — but you nor anyone you know or will ever know, thank God, is America. Your ignorance is only exceeded by your pathetic need to fall to your knees before nothing.

4,500 dead American soldiers – 31,000 crippled and wounded American soldiers – 91,000 dead Iraqi men, women and children – an amazingly profitable war – 600 billion spent thus far – with billions of dollar officially missing – and an estimated final price tag of 2 trillion – all to fight a country with no real army or no real weapons – is it incompetence – stunning greed – or a little from column A and a little from Column B. How many young American soldiers have to die to make Republican Gods of War richer than they ever dared to dream – can you even put a number on it – or does it even matter?

You offer up your whore from Alaska – who never met a federal dollar she could not stoop to pick-up – without using her hands – who went to DC to a Republican-controlled-male-dominated Congress and walked away – assuming she could in-fact walk – with 28 million of my tax dollars for her little town of 5,500 – and you want to talk about Pelosi? You can’t spend my money fast enough can you?

Yeah, why don’t you tell us all about choices – maybe if your men were not chasing dick in men’s rooms or teenage boys down the halls of Congress – and your women were not popping out of cakes to pick up the almighty tax dollar without using their hands – we might be more inclined to listen.

A Mr. Jim Nowka of Northville Michigan has written a letter to the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman published today in which he indicates that he is confused as to why Scarah “was not able to sweep support of American women” and ponders whether our “reluctance” to support her has to do with a lack of self-esteem on our part. Perhaps a few of you would like to attempt to answer his queries?

Thank you, UK Man for sharing your lady with us. I enjoyed your post as much as I enjoy hers and hope that you will continue to join her here rather than take her away to that idyllic life we were all so much enjoying before Scarah appeared on scene and scared the living beejeebers out of us. Alas, Scarah and her not very bright but rabid fans are apparently here to stay for a bit, so we still need all hands on deck.

  66. UK Lady says:

Lol, Irishgirl, my hubby posted a plaintive cry about how he was missing me, coz of Mudflats, I just went mad when he told me and asked AKM to not post it in an email. Apparently it went up for a few minutes and it was very sweet and funny. Some posters saw it and replied to him, which he loved. I wish AKM would put it back now, as it was nice and it might make him take more notice of what I’m interested in if he gets a few replies.

  67. Irishgirl says:

OMG, was chatting on the phone to the outlaws……what have I missed as regards UK man?

  68. UK Lady says:

Well, there was nearly just world war three in our house when UK Man informed me he had posted in the open thread. I went ballistic, then I read his post and had to apololgise (not something that comes naturally, unfortunately).

Anyway, thank you so much for your lovely and witty responses, which he is reading!! What a turn up for the books. Maybe we can convert him to the cause, if you can’t beat them join them sort of thing. 😆

  69. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

LOL…..{{{{{{{{{ Hugs UKMAN }}}}}}}}}}} we can’t help it, we’d love for it to be over, also, too. It’s just that Scarah won’t give us a break, not one day!

  70. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

yes my dear Scarah groupie I agree with you, about the pattern part………

“First the Evansville pro-life dinner, next publicly coming out and supporting Carrie Prejean’s right to free speech, then voicing her opposition to Notre Dame for inviting Obama and now the interview with Christian Living.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

The moral of the story: these folks will remain with Sarah come hell or high water; and Sarah knows she will need them by her side if she is to prevail in any future electoral contest.”

  71. txindygirl says:

    UKMAN,

We deeply regret your loneliness, but must ask that you soldier on! All hands are needed on deck to counter the ignorant and desperate twits who are hell-bent on foisting the Clown Palin on our national stage. UK Lady may well be that voice of reason to turn the hearts of well-meaning, but breathtakingly uninformed Palin supporters. If it were only Palin we were facing, we could all go home, as Palin digs her own hole on a daily basis. But, alas, it is the slavishly enamored who must be corralled as they are armed with voter registration cards. When Duty calls, there is no option but to respond. We thank you for your service and feel sure you will appreciate your UK Lady all the more when we have victoriously completed our mission.

I speak as someone who has already sacrificed a marriage to this cause. A small price to pay, in my case, and I’ve been rewarded with many peaceful waking hours! 🙂

    New thread on clothes….

  73. Canadian Neighbour says:

Palin clothing decision has made it to CNN too.

She’s sure to twitter something about it. Now with Twitter, guess it saves on all those releases.

  74. Lilybart says:

Terpsichore: they don’t fact check anymore unless it is a non-fiction expose and the lawyers need to go over it carefully. (example, Rogues Gallery, a history of the MET musuem and its trustees, was carefully vetted by lawyers, too many major players in the book.)

Coultergiest’s “books” are not fact checked. She has bogus “footnotes” that are hilarious if you follow them, but she creates them. Her books and all those extreme conservative books are full of BS and lies.

Depending on what comes out about levi/babygate, the book will be her usual moose droppings OR a heartfelt confession.

The dismissal means nothing. It was dismissed on a technicality (party $ vs candidate $). I love how the RNC constantly says that much of the clothing was returned right away because of size. What that statement means is that they laid out MORE than the $150 to $180,000.00. You don’t have to report the outlay, only what you ended up actually spending.

But what of the coverage? What of the hours and hours of cable news devoted to Ms. Prejean? Are we supposed to forget it or, worse yet, watch it? We here at the Huffington Post wouldn’t let either of those things happen so we’ve condensed hundreds of hours of talking heads and sound bites to (roughly) 60 seconds for your consumption.

I rather doubt that they will since they do state a loophole allows this to happen, but I do think that they should publicize this loudly and work towards changing rules and regs so as to not allow this to happen any longer. I recall that there were quite a few people who were very displeased knowing that money they sent in to the RNC might be going to outfit the Palin family, as that isn’t why these people donate to their “cause”. I am sure that this kind of “reform” would get support on all sides.

Topic: Eagle Flooding- possible help for eagle

I mentioned yesterday on the open thread that I sent an email off to the ‘Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’ because their webpage has a section for ‘Emergency Relief’. Eagle and the surrounding area should qualify.

One voice is not heard as loudly though and so I have just emailed Senator Begich’s office asking him if someone in His Office (a US Senator’s voice is heard LOUDer ) would request/submit a Grant to the Gates Foundation for Emergency Relief for the area. I assume the Gates Foundation could act quickly with funds… IE… it is an emergency.

A few more emails to the Senators Office might help as well. Afterall… we are all sitting here in our pajamas just waiting to email someone…. according to the MSM.
    http://begich.senate.gov/public/

The more voices are heard… the better. This is no knock on the Senator… we are just trying to be supportive and use a resource that is there. We can’t rely on GINO… of course.
And how SWEET… would it be if someone like the Gates Foundation stepped up while GINO did the ‘usual’…. nothing. Embarrassing….. Yu betcha!
Wouldn’t find a note/chapter to that in her book.

    ***********************************************************************************
The vote counts are down for some of our competitors because they were chosen as First Round winners. The numbers we see for them now are probably votes after the cutoff for Round 1.
I suspect AKM’s application was accepted AFTER the May 11 deadline for Round 1, but she is now the leader in Round 2. It is up to us to keep the votes coming so there will be no question who wins Round 2. Remember, only the highest vote getter in each round automatically gets picked. The other nine are chosen by committee using many different sources to make their choices. I want to see AKM as the “Queen” of ALL the votes cast. How ’bout the rest of you mudpuppies??

Say No @41 “she’s said so many things she can’t keep them straight, lol……how will she write her book? lol will her ghost writer have to fact check then get back to her on what needs “revising” lol……”

Exactly why I wouldn’t want the job of being her collaborator or any of the editors.

Then Sarah will get aggravated for someone questioning her on things and asking her to clarify positions and tell her to just “to her/his job” and write the dang book and stop pestering her with stupid questions.

In my fantasy world, such a collaborator would then say, “No job is worth this. I quit”.

I hope Sarah understands that the collaborator will be a professional writer and human being who is working WITH her on a shared goal, not a person working FOR her, expected to just roll over and do her bidding without question. She (SP) had better be able to take some direction and criticism in the course of this project or my fantasy will probably come true.

This is by no means an average income family by any stretch of the imagination. Now they have a good thing going. The Legal Fund which can be used for anything they want while claiming it is relative to Sarah being Gov., The PAC to pay for all political activities, airfare, hotel, food etc…, the state picks up all costs for “state business”, and the book deal to add just a bit more $$ in their pockets.

So how do suppose this would have unfolded in AK if Palin “had not” been chosen VP……something like despair for her political future and family embarrassment. Troopergate would have gone much differently too, had McCain not rescued her bad butt. Another miracle for her, whew. Her God works in mysterious ways, lol.

  119. EyeOnYou says:

Earlier I posted this in the wrong thread (Palin Priorities) and wanted to repost it in today’s open thread.

The Palin’s did an interview for “Christian Living Magazine” and it is enough to make you sick with her answers (lies).

    Leading By Example

Like most people in public life, the Palins have taken their share of hard knocks. The 2008 political campaign delivered some especially nasty blows: Everything from criticism of Sarah’s wardrobe to shots at her administration and-the really tough ones-attacks against her children.

CL: How did those negatives affect you?

Sarah: During the campaign, I was insulated. It was not until I returned home that my eyes were opened to various things coming from the mainstream media. But most hurtful were the lies spoken about my kids.

CL: As a Christian leader, how do you deal with such difficult situations?

Sarah: I look back at Scripture that reminds me, hey, I’m sure not the first to face this. Criticism will come. Unfair shots will be taken. The question is how are you going to react? I like I Peter 2:12. It says to keep your conduct honorable, so that by your good works, which are observed by others, God will be glorified. When I read that I know others have faced this before me. They face it today. Who am I to exempt myself from a principle like that? In spite of it all, I’ve got to live my life to glorify God. That’s what I promised myself I’d do 30 years ago, and that’s what I must do now-not just to talk it, but to walk it.

    http://www.gofishproductions.net/home/T287-todd-sarah-palin

Quite hysterical that she believes she has acted honorably in her handling of criticism directed at her.
She goes on to state that her first reaction to Bristol’s pregnancy was “despair and embarrassment”, and then she goes on to once again restate how she made a choice about keeping Trig

I said it before and I’ll say it again, she is really trying hard to secure her bona fides with her base on her “Christianity”.

Now normally I don’t care too much if someone talks about their particular beliefs (as long as they aren’t trying to push them onto others) but I have absolutely no qualms about calling out someone on their behavior when they are proving themselves to be hypocrites.

If I remember correctly, AKM’s post about the scholarship and the voting was posted on May 15, the day of the announcements for the first round; so our votes would put AKM in consideration for the second round.

I don’t understand why they keep the bloggers who have already won scholarships in the list for the later rounds. If it were up to me, I’d take those names off the list and put them on their own separate page, to avoid this kind of confusion.

  130. I See Villages From My House says:

I read that satire gives people courage. Once Palin was announced as McCain’s pick, I was literally sick to my stomach. She was already bad for rural Alaska, I couldn’t imagine the destruction she’d wreak on the rest of not only the country, but the world.

If any doubter said so in the ADN or DNM comment sections, the onslaught of attacks was instantaneous and remains so despite the revelation that she is and in fact, has always been, in way over her head.

This is when the anonymous bloggers (and not so anonymous) came to the rescue – to give us courage to stand up and say this move for the country wasn’t an improvement over the last 8 grueling years. This woman already abused city, municipal and State resources to exact revenge on ‘haters’ and it is truly hard for someone like me to keep my public mouth shut against such glaring inequities.

Bloggers and SNL (god bless Tina Fey) were able to articulate our fears in someone like Palin and her caricature was sufficient enough to help those undecided make the right choice. Isn’t is funny that President Obama used the very word in his abortion address at Notre Dame that Sarah desperately tried to use in her foreign policy defense when she settled for Couric’s “mocked?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nokTjEdaUGg

Every time I wonder if we make too big a deal about certain Palin actions or developments, we have the sharp and saavy bloggers take up where the press fails. I’m glad we have made Sarah rue the day she asked us to “hold her accountable,” but then again, we anonymous commentators would have anyway.

  131. Confuzzle says:

Wow, they even have a “high-tech ‘war room” to listen to us b*tch , gripe and complain—I’m a little impressed. Well, guess our Prez figures this is the one the only true ways of getting the public’s real opinion. Kinda nice having a Prez whose up on the “internet/blogging/twittering” stuff and is actually utilizing it.
Guess I could work on some wittier and thought provoking comments in my pj blogging huge amounts of spare time.:)

  133. Well, I admit, I am still in my jammies, and I’m drinking my morning tea. But I’m not angry – should I be?

I just had a long chat yesterday afternoon with a friend that I met on-line a number of years ago. It turned out that, even though she now lives in South Carolina, she grew up about 30 minutes from my home in Washington state and comes home to visit her parents – so we get together when she’s on this side of the country. And eventually, the conversation yesterday turned to politics. No surprise there.

We both feel that our country is in such a better place with President Obama than we were in for the Bush years. And I think that bubbles said just what I’ve been thinking. I may not agree with every decision our President makes, but he has a whole lot more information about all that stuff than I do, so I trust him to do the job to which we elected him. I’m glad that he is willing to listen to what ordinary people are saying, but he really can’t spend his incredibly busy days hearing or reading through all the rants that are out there.

    Rahm? You there?

I hope by “mean” you are referring to former vice-presidential candidate, and first loser’s, folks. I don’t have a mean bone in my body…. *crossing fingers behind pj clad back*

good morning everyone. i absolutely adore my president and his lady. the man is not a puppet. he plays a very deep game. many bloggers were not so much for him as they were against mccain. the republicans left this country on its knees. they left the government bureaus stuffed with their barely literate, right wing , so-called christians. now, i understand that the president is not above criticism. in fact i believe he welcomes debate, however, you don’t send him long winded letters or rants and expect him to sit there and read your opinions. there is simply not enough hours in a day or a week. i expect him to run this country to best of his abilities [which are considerable]. i support president Obama and i will uphold him in prayer and in every fiber of my being…..b

Long live pajama clad bloggers! Thank God we have found our voices and have a platform from which they can be heard.

I’m not as angry as during the bush error and time is alway limited but we found time to help him when O was running for office. We can find the time. Some things are just too important.

Thanks to all Mudflatters for a sane and powerful voice. Not too mean usually.

President Obama will draw new irate blog critics after releasing the government’s plans for reducing fuel emissions. If your name is Green, you’d better duck.

To enjoy cleaner air, all you have to do is buy a new car and live long enough for everybody else to buy one. And, presumably, rescue the automobile manufacturers.

    But why wait?

    Save money
    Clean up your your environment
Lower the demand for imported oil
    Lower the price of oil
Use the glut of natural gas in the US
Help Alaska’s economy in two ways

Convert your car to LPG or dual-fuel. I did it years ago, and I ain’t dead yet.
