Bird of the Week – Pine Grosbeak
A bright color in our monochromatic winter, and a truly lovely song besides, the Pine Grosbeak is a favorite winter bird.
The females and immature birds are grey with a goldish wash across their crown and nape. They are wary and not present every winter or all winter. You will hear them much more often than you will see them, but they are a treat on a grey winter day.

Ah, another week (and another year), another beautiful bird. Thanks so much, WC.
What did Slip say? I was distracted by a pink commie to the right of the bird above.
I dunno . . . that bird looks like a commie pinko to me.
Let me disagree with Conscious and say I can ignore the adds to surf w/o a subscription. I’ve avoided the NYT subscription charge. This limits my consumption of Krugman to 20/mth.
..and I too..came to enjoy a beautiful bird. Indeed it is a cheery fellow..and captures ones heart..just enjoying the fullness of his feathery soul. As to..the intrusion..of adverts..I have the ability to tune them out. I do not care for the cell phone conversations..in store aisles..but, I can manage. I would love a world..without..the little, intrusive labels..upon shirts and jean rumps..but..commercialism..must be served. Even my much enjoyed OPB and NPR..have small notes as to..sponsorship. At almost..76..the fine detail..or arranging my world..in a forwardlooking way..has been honed, refined..and thus..is great help as I hike the trails of wild, and urban..looking to enjoy that which brings many..strength and joy. Since assorted..modest financial rewards..from ads..add up..I am happy with the space, depth..and wide-ranging news, satire and hardhitting ideas..that are covered here…due, in some part..from the accrued-coin..of the realm. (Pating-g-g-g..as moi 2 cents..hits the screen..;)
What a sweet bird and what a treat it would be to see it on a snowy winter branch!
Dear Mudflats,
I came here to look at a beautiful bird. I must say, honestly, that the advertisements are distracting. They diminish the spirit and creativity of the background photo and the overall layout.
It’s your blog and your business, but I am disappointed.
It’s a beautiful photo….REGARDLESS…
