Open Thread – Hope Truck Headed Home

eagleak

Well, it’s been a busy couple of days for Hope, Mr. Hope and Caravan Guy.  The truckload of supplies to help those rebuilding after the flood left the Lowe’s parking lot in South Anchorage, stopped off in Wasilla, and made it all the way to Eagle.  Mudflatter Yukonbushgrma met up with the crew, and said they had a great time visiting.  The details of the journey, and pictures are forthcoming once Hope makes it home and has the chance to send me her account of the trip.

While we wait, enjoy the open thread.

Welcome back Hope, Sir Hope, and Caravan Guy! I hope you will get a deep & restful sleep (in you OWN bed, lol), you must be exhausted and buttsore by now.

  2. Physicsmom says:

Welcome back Hope and team. Wow, I had no idea that Eagle and Emmonak are on totally opposite sides of the state, about as far apart as you can get in AK. Is Eagle also on the Yukon river? I knew it was big and followed it a long way on Google Maps, but I thought it ended up in the Arctic Ocean. I’ll have to go back and look again. Please keep putting up the little map graphics, they help us “outside” get a better idea of the vastness of your state.

I would not consider your usage of “feds” on the forum or blog to be the same as those whom I was speaking of. Palin used that in a public commentary and then so did the ADN in their “Opinion” piece. Those are awfully formal setting where one would think that most people would use “Federal Government” or “The Current Administration” instead of “Feds”.

I don’t think that anyone would have qualms about the usage of that in an informal setting, but Palin uses it all the time, in words both written and spoken. It reminds me of the years gone by and a time when you would expect someone to start complaining about the “revenuers” coming.

There is a huge difference. Heck, when I text my son, I do things like Whr R U? instead of typing it all out, but Palin is not only using it in a casual setting but in a professional one as well and it shows, in my opinion, her lack of professionalism, her lack of competence, and lack of journalism skills.

I have a confession to make. I don’t know that this is the thread but it’s an open one, so here goes.

I’ve used the word “Feds” and used it fairly often. I started feeling guilty about it when reading that post earlier (about calling the government in Washinton D.C. “the Feds”).

The only time that would have been intended as a slight would have been a certain eight years (remember them?? sigh). Any other time, I’ve used it because I’m a freakin’ lazy typist!

Think about it; “federal government” or “current administration” takes a lot more letters (and conscious spelling) than that little four-letter word “feds.” Hm. I maybe just added to your case there…

But I don’t like guilt trips, even or especially when they’re self-inflicted. So I hereby resolve to avoid Lazy-Typist-Syndrome. Hopefully, that resolution will last longer than my New Year’s ones. ha!

How amazing! Our Pressure cleaner petered out 2 weeks ago and we bought the same exact model. It works so well and is way better than the one we used to have. You are right about it being theraputic. Lol! When I get that thing revved there’s no stopping me. Deck, spiderwebs, bottom deck and driveway and sidewalk, not to mention the front porch……….beware! I wish I could take it inside my house and wipe out all that muck! Unfortunately, it would wipe out my whole house!

    Aglow’s Mandates

We believe that God has been maturing the women of Aglow to be able to receive His three specific mandates by faith, and live them out for His Kingdom’s sake.

    Our mandates are:

    1. To promote gender reconciliation between male and female in the Body of Christ as God designed.

    2. To answer God’s call to minister to the Muslim people, while bringing awareness of the basic theological differences between Islam and Christianity.

    3. To stand in loving support for Israel and the Jewish people, while helping to bring awareness to the Body of Christ concerning God’s plans and purposes for those people He calls the apple of His eye.

Very small town and at least 90% very very christian. Blue laws on Sunday, that sort of thing. Can’t get a beer or a bottle of wine unless you drive to a roadhouse at least 30 miles out of town on Sunday.

Please don’t beat me up but I get a strange feeling whenever I pass through there and stop only long enough to top off the tank and head on down or up the road.

honestyinGov, I am part of the TNR movement here.
    ——————————-
the problem child… your organizations sounds just like the previous group they were running and doing the same sort of things. Trapping feral cats, having them fixed and released and or trying to find homes for ones that were adoptable. The truly feral/wild ones of course would not make friendly house pets. Some of the friendlier feral cats do fine for someone on a farm or ranch.(and find a home) Just not good for a lap-cat. They had basically all ‘ volunteers’ as well as were paying expenses from personal money or contributions from yard sales they put on. Petco also let them set up ‘Adoption Tables’ outside their stores on weekends for adoptions. One cat food company used to donate bags of food as part of a program they had.

This new Clinic (starting in July) I think received a Grant from the County to try to curb the pet population problem. This particular county has some of the highest numbers with unwanted or feral cats.
They are in the process of getting staff on board and getting all the people. Not sure what the ratio is but there will still be ‘volunteers’ as well.
It sounds like your organization was ‘north ‘ of the Bay area as your comment related to the weather.
I’ll have to share more info with you as they get more things in place. Still a lot of work to do. Some on Staff travel to N. Carolina later this month for a weekend ‘Training Course’. This company has helped set up about 50 ( I think..?)of these clinics across the country. Not clear on all the details.
I’ll send your link along to them as well.

Thanks everyone 😉 … for your insight on my Forum questions.

It was not exactly going to be really going to be questions of a ‘personal nature’ per se. I have a friend that was working with and setting up a ‘ low cost ‘ spay and neuter clinic for the county. They have their own website and so the info I guess is not really ‘personal’. Everybody can see it. The prices vets charge usually prevents many lower income families from fixing their pets and then you have even more and more litters of unwanted animals. They were setting up a clinic to make it affordable to everybody….so you don’t have all the unwanted pets dumped in these shelters. And most people realize ‘what happens’ to may of these unwanted animals when the shelters become overcrowded.
They are trying to prevent ‘that’.
Here is a link to the website. They are supposed to open July 20th.
    http://www.acatteam.org/

Has anybody else in their travels seen a clinic that has a website that they might able to use as a model for what they are doing. Any suggestions….?

Truly. Sometimes you get comfortable with a forum, with friends and totally forget there are LURKERS who can are invisible to you yet you are opening up your life to them. Be careful. Be overly cautious about open forums. Even private cause some people screen shot & send your posts around the net.

HistoryGoddess Says “And, maybe I am being real picky, but she seems to imply that the people who weren’t there didn’t care as much. ”

Exactly, what she was saying. Wasn’t too bright to dismiss those elsewhere celebrating with other traditions. Basically she was saying anyone that was not there was off at the lake drinking.

How about when she runs off to New York, to exploit statehood with People Magazine instead of being IN STATE where the governor belongs. How insincere is she, very and hypocritical.

P.S. And, a lousy dresser. She better be careful running around N.Y. in a mini skirt and those red ho shoes. She might get a new headline in the New York Times, Cops & Criminals, section. Wonder if her trust fund monies can be used for bail?

If you have a discussion with someone on one the Forum threads…. those details can not be seen by anybody just browsing… Right…? You have to be a Member and signed on.

Anyone can read the forum, member or not, but you must be a member to respond to any comments. I would be very hesitant to put any personal details on the forum. There are a couple of areas of the forum that are only visible to members, but otherwise it is openly visible to the public.

mae lewis, your post had me laughing out loud!!! Twitter is exactly as you described. Watching, Palin, is for comedic relief and as you mentioned, possible evidence of misuse of governors office/state funds. The more she has access to public forums, the better.

Someone posted, Austin?, more then 60% of registered users for Twitter abandoned after a couple months. I get that. Unless you are keeping tabs with a celeb or someone who has a reason to mass communicate there every notion, for personal use, Twitter is bulky. Other medias are much better for keeping up to date with friends/family and you are not restricted by 140 characters, per message.

  73. honestyinGov says:

Thanks for the tips Nan and austintx. 😉

BTW…. are you actually from Austin.. ? I was driving home late last night and heard the Sports Radio channel doing some coverage of the NCAA College baseball games and it was the Austin team playing BYU…? I think…

The game was in the top of the 25th inning and Austin had just scored to break the 2 to 2 tie in the top of the inning. Not sure if the other team scored after that.
They said these kids (the game) had been playing for over 7 HOURS!!
And then…. they had to play again TODAY !..???
18 yo kids or not….. THAT is a long game.

I am too old for Twitter. I can barely do “The Internets” (It’s a series of tubes, according to Ted Stevens). Twitter sounds like high school. “Dear Diary, Today, I think that Todd looked at me. He’s cute.” My daughter has one friend who insists on doing The Twitter; “Hi, I’m going to bake brownies.” Twitter #2, “The brownies are in the oven.” Twitter #3 “Boy, do these brownies taste good.” (This really happened! Even my daughter says that she is too old for Twitter).

In this context, I really have to wonder about the Sarah Palin Twitters. Her list reads, “I am going to a meeting,” “I am taking my baby for a haircut,” “These brownies taste good.” At our state website, there is a factual, impersonal list of the governor’s accomplishments, schedule, pending programs– it does not read, “Then I (underline the I) did this” And please, oh please, why is Alaska interested in Piper and Willow’s camp or Trig’s haircut? Oh, I forget, these moments are probably paid for with state dollars. I would comment more about Twitter, but the brownies are almost done, and they smell delicious!

I’m not sure, frankly. It might depend partly on *what* it is. You can always PM Snoskred or AKM and ask either (or both) of them.

hope that helps even a little.

As a sort of a follow-up to my #18 post……Is there a certain Forum Folder or thread that I should visit to get more info about pets or one that pertains to animals.
There are a lot of threads there and am not that familiar with everything that is there. Could some of the Forum regulars give me their opinion or insight..?

I was going to post some comments that might include personal info…. that don’t need to be across the web. Within the Mudflats community…. no problem though.

I joined the Forum once the Eagle thread started up there and can’t remember what it was like before that…. as far as viewing comments.

NACOG; Northern Arizona Council Of Governments. These folks ran a piece in our local newspaper explaining that they ‘ve received federal stimulus funds. They were encouraging residents to apply for the winterization program. Of course, income level guidelines must be met. State, County, and local governments working for those in need. Wonder if those funds increased when Alaska’s Palin turned it down. The residents of Northern Az. are delighted to put to use what could have been Alaska’s. What a shame Palin is. And I learn from the ADN, and I don’t learn much, that Palin will not be picking a supreme court judge until Oct. But yet last week she reminded everyone that this would be her 3rd pick. On the same day our president announces his first, sick woman.

Obviously the kids were out there alone or dad, grandparents, someone would have brought them home.

LMAO, at Palin, saying the, “Greenery”, reminds her it almost almost June…AHaHaHaHa, yeah, like TOMORROW, huh? She is such a dip.

  82. HistoryGoddess says:

I just listened to the first few minutes of GiNO’s Memorial Day speech. (C4P’s site- I do try to read multiple viewpoints.)

Her speech patterns are hard for me to follow. I keep expecting a verb, and yet I hear a string of phrases and clauses that get so far away from the subject of the sentence that even she forgets. Plus, she seems to make up words. Is recreate- as in recreation- a word? She mentions people “recreating” (rec- cre-ate -ing is how she pronounced it.)

And, maybe I am being real picky, but she seems to imply that the people who weren’t there didn’t care as much. Only people who attended really cared? She doesn’t say that directly, but she praises people for being there when they could have been doing something else on that nice Fairbank’s day. She says this a couple of times. She later mentions that others ARE doing the same thing with their families, but I had already gotten lost in her word salad. She seemed to be stalling for some time before she read the proclamation.

Ending on a positive note- This seemed like a very respectful gathering. I am glad that the governor could join this group to honor those who have given so much. Kudos to all of those who worked so hard to make the event happen!

Wow, Palin, cannot afford her taxes on personal usage of the states SUV yet she can afford lake front property and a cabin out in the woods?

Wondering still what the effort was to include Willow’s name is. Curious to me sending Piper & Willow, away from home this past week. Maybe something to do with NOT having them around when People Magazine was there exclusively shooting Bristol? Piper, she can get chatty and Willow, at some point watching her sister get glamor and attention has to rub the wrong way. She’ll act out for some recognition.

“Yeah, wonder WHO will get the appointment.

Record 25 apply for Supreme Court
A record number of applicants are competing to be Gov. Sarah Palin’s next pick for the Alaska Supreme Court, including an attorney who tried to stop the “Troopergate” investigation of Palin last year.”
    * ** * ** * **

I read that a council gets to review the names and forward a smaller number for the Gov. to choose from. And I read that Bill M. implied the Gov. was ‘disappointed’ at having only two to choose from last time, indicating neither one fit her politics or she didn’t like them personally – after being reviewed by the council, I doubt any claim that both weren’t equally qualified for the position. Surely her role is simply to rubberstamp one of the choices, not question why their on the list in the first place.

If I’m right, that means once again we see SP bristle when anyone else but her gets any say whatsoever about a political appointment. She resented that the AK Leg. had to approve her AG choice. She resented that the AK Senate Dems. got to send up names to replace Kim Elton’s seat.

She just doesn’t seem to get that AK legislators (ideally) are the elected voices of the Alaskan people, and when she tries to insist she should have more ‘choices’, she’s undermining the whole process that allows the AK people to have a say in how their government is run.

How could she possibly staff a Presidential cabinet that would work? How could she possibly make thoughtful choices for US Supreme Court? She could no more do that than I could, without relying on the advice of other people, something she seems reluctant to do.

“The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life of Frances Perkins, FDR’s Secretary of Labor and His Moral Conscience”

The current financial crisis is widely described as the nation’s worst since the Great Depression. With the comparisons to the 1930s has come a renewed focus on the New Deal, the government initiative of social programs and public service jobs launched by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. A new book argues that no voice in the FDR administration was more influential in shaping the New Deal than Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, the first-ever woman cabinet member in the United States.
