Bird of the Week – Northwestern Crow

There are four species of crow in North America, but only one breeds or commonly occurs in Alaska, the Northwestern Crow.

Northwestern Crow, Cordova, Alaska

Smaller than the American Crow, there’s a lot of disagreement among ornithologists about whether the Northwestern Crow may just be a subspecies of its American Crow cousin. For now, based on the size difference and their quite different calls, the American Ornithological Union thinks it is a different species.

Camera geek stuff: f8, 1/250, ISO1000. The white drops are rain.

Thanks,WC. I really enjoy these bird photos and learn new stuff every week. Even when I have to dig around to find more. Spotted my very first bald eagle nest down on a tributary of the Little Sioux River. There was an eagle within a half mile, but the nest does not appear to be used this year. Got one close up look at a baldy when it bounced off my Jeep windshield right in front of me. That crack in the corner of the windshield will stay there as long as I own that Jeep as a reminder to watch the sky and the road/ditches at all times when I drive.

  2. Mikey, you have American Crows in Iowa. They are the largest North American Crow but, admittedly, pretty small in relation to a Common Raven.

iowa crows don’t look all that big from a distance. They do tend to be black, though.
