Bird of the Week – Red-Throated Loon
The smallest and slenderest of Alaska’s loons, in breeding plumage the Red-throated Loon is a beautiful bird.
This species is much better than other loons at taking off, needing a shorter distance. So it is sometimes found breeding on surprisingly small ponds. It breeds inland and on the Arctic Bering Coasts. It winters down the coast in in-shore waters, as far south as southern California. The species is in decline in Alaska, and science doesn’t yet know why. WC has found them to be uncommon breeders on alpine lakes, but always a treat to find.
Camera geek stuff: f7.1, 1/320, ISO400.

I love the photo of this loon and its reflection in the water.
I can’t remember ever hearing a loon’s call so I looked online and found this:

What is the obvious difference between real loons and fauxknee wingnut loons?
Jerry Falwell Jr,head of Liberty Uni wants all students to carry guns on campus to be able to shoot Muslims if/when they step on campus. Jeebus said much the same thing to his disciples when he said love one another as you would love yourselves. I think jeebus was lying through his pie hole.

this one sounds a bit different than the common loon.
the common loon was the favorite bird of my folks.
it’s wail brings them both back…
Thank you for the picture..and ‘extended grounds’ information. The call of a loon..up in the mountains..and..hearing it..over time..is a ..key..to our soul. It resonates..in those who lived, hoped and..soldiered-on. Wishing ..great grace..upon the loon family..and ways to keep them..watching/listening..on the edges of their world..which we..should most gently..enter and move around in..
