Open Thread: Baking a cake is not just a good metaphor…
…it’s a tasty way to make money! I made one today for the Service High Football Team cake auction. It’s in the center in the top picture…gingerbread cake with lemon buttercream filling and cream cheese frosting topped with two Danish gingersnaps and candied ginger. Mine was FAR from the fanciest but it did taste yummy! (The buyer shared!)
There were some really beautiful ones as you can see. Of course, my secret weapon was to “encourage” (strong-arm) people into bidding on mine. Thanks to Anchorage School Board member Pat Higgins, mine sold for $35.00! Some others even went as high as $50.00!
Leslie Lorentzen (with her daughter and Pat above) was one of the movers and shakers behind the event, which also included face and hair painting, a bake sale, a silent auction, a game of “heads or tails” for really nice prizes, several dance groups, singers, etc… I wanted to help support Lesile in her efforts for her son. While my daughter won’t be part of football when she goes to Service, she will be in cross-country skiing. Thanks to Mayor Sullivan, the costs of participating in all school sports are going up due to the extra fees. We all may need to start raising funds to keep going so it’s good to join forces.
Baking is not just a hobby. It’s more like a work of art (especially when you get into specialized pastries)!
Happy Mother’s Day to all you MudMoms!

If you don’t stop this—I am going to fall off the “wagon” !

After Easter and all holidays—–I am on a diet! But will think of you when I bake my next goodie!
Don’ t just think of me. Send that cake over pronto.
I have decided to back “Pants on Fire” for the Kentucky Derby. He’ll probably drop out half way, but I will have a lovely time to snark.
“Tanya McDowell Facing 20 Years in Prison for Sending Son to ‘Wrong’ School” (Kos)
A petition “calling on Norwalk officials to drop charges against McDowell and to fire prosecutor Suzanne Vieux who continues pursuing this case.”

Email Connecticut Attorney General George C. Jepsen: attorney.general@ct.gov
done Scout and thank you.
I wrote an impassioned, and even eloquent note on this, and when I hit “send” it said they couldn’t take it. Unfortunately, I didn’t copy it. Any suggestions? Others having the same problem?

“Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if schools had all the money they needed and the military had to hold bake sales tofill in the funding gaps?”
–I can’t take credit for that – someone said it back in the seventies, during the Vietnam war….

I’ve had quite nearly the same conversation(s) this week; just not in the vicinity of jet aircraft.
Hey, Linda, lovely cake — but not for me. I’m vegan. Good on you for taking part; the kids will be grateful even if they never say it.
These cakes make my mouth water. And I love anything—Ginger or lemon. YUMMY!
It doesn’t take much spice to put a cake or bread over the top.
I make a Greek Easter bread with a tiny bit of Mahleb. It is from the pit of the sour cherry. It is a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spice used to flavor breads, cakes and pastries. I purchased this spice from THE SPICE HOUSE in Milwaukee WI—-if interested.

Send me a slice ASAP. 🙂
It’s easy to see a lot of love went into that cake, Miss Linda. I bet it was the best one there.
It reminds me that I decided years ago to stop taking “chocolate anything” to public meetings, since we can usually count on someone to bring chocolate. Today, if I take something to share with others, I tend toward lemon, sour cream, or pineapple whatever. But I’ll look into ginger next time, just because you shared your idea with us. Thank you!
Yup, that’s exactly my philosophy. When it comes to a fundraiser, the drumbeat of chocolate this-or-that generally stops people from bidding on them after awhile. That’s why I usually make something unusual.
Yum! What a lovely day. Thank you for helping.
wow ! pictures of unsealed ballot bags in Wisconsin…guess which area ???

This is a MUST READ (and yes, I’m shouting, which I do only rarely). Thanks for posting, benlomond2.
What a mess! I’m more careful about closing up the garbage bags I throw out every week than those election workers were about properly sealing the ballot bags! Did they even TRY to close them up?
I can’t see how they can get an accurate outcome in Wisconsin without doing the whole thing over again. Unfortunately, from what I’m reading, there is nothing in the election statutes that allows for that and it doesn’t seem as though they can or will just make a decision to do it.
It’s just amazing that a long, involved system can be established to prevent fraud but, when that system is clearly not followed, there is no recourse and no alternate process for determining the winning candidate. Why have all these procedures and regulations in place if there’s no action taken when the procedures are blatantly not followed?
Makes me really worry about the validity of the 2012 presidential election and the tremendous opportunity for election fraud.
In 2008 OFA had a huge poll watching effort. If you aren’t already gotten involved it is a good time to get involved. We are having neighborhood meetings now every month to begin the effort to win in 2012.
It’s time to make Republican voter registration and election fraud a major issue.
Dang! That sounds yummy. Now you’ve got my stomach making noise growling.
