Open Thread: Game of Thrones, Arctic Style

The Ocean Conservancy just dropped this stunning parody video to promote their new report on the effect drilling on the Arctic. It’s worth a watch and the report is of course, worth a read. I’ve been down with a mindblowing flu the last week, so I apologize for the lack of updates on the site – anything I would have written probably wouldn’t have made much sense anyway. So what have I missed Mudpuppies!?! What news have I missed in this 5 day feverish haze that I’ve been in…?

Open Thread – The Alaska Highway

It’s a new year and so I figured it’s time to bring back the weekly open thread posts. I want to know from everyone what their New Year’s resolution is – and how long they think they will last. My resolution is to stop spending all my extra money on camera gear and related accessories. I’m betting I’ll last a month. Completely unrelated to my question, here’s a fun video I found a while back discussing the creation of the Alaska Highway. January 4th, 2 years ago I was driving this highway during the Polar Vortex, shockingly I survived without…

The Weekend Off – News You Missed

Alaska ADN – Jail contractor calls for end to free local phone calls In the jailhouse phone business, the usual practice in the United States has been for the company that provides telephones behind bars to pay a “commission” to the government agency that allows it to serve a captive customer base. Fairbanks Daily Miner – Lockheed Martin wins Alaska spaceport contract The state-owned space agency on Friday named Lockheed Martin the winner of a bidding process to reconfigure a launch pad to accommodate larger rockets than what the Kodiak Launch Complex can currently handle. Juneau Empire – South Korean vessel heads to…

Open Thread – Climate Change March

I’m in NYC right now covering the Climate Change March. I’ve already met people from Texas, California and even Guatemala and they’re all here to tell the United Nations to take immediate action on climate change. You can find out more about tomorrows march at peoplesclimate.org/march/ Will you be participating in local marches? What’s going on in your area environmentally?

Open Thread: Warren Zevon

It’s been 11 years now since we lost Warren Zevon. He was taken from us way too early by cancer. Warren was probably known best for his song Werewolves of London, but my all time favorite from him is ‘My Sh*t’s F**ked Up‘ off of ‘Life’ll Kill Ya.’ That song has been playing on loop for the past couple of weeks on my car stereo. But my dear editor has made the decision that it’s a bit too raunchy for the site. So here’s my second favorite ‘Lawyers Guns and Money.‘ [Editor’s Note: I believe I said “nsfw.” Think of the…

Open Thread: Brian Goes on Vacation

Well, actually it’s Brian’s east coast twin. He’s on vacation on Cape Cod, soaking up the rays and meeting the locals. While it looks in this photo that Brian might be stuck in the mudflats, he’s not – it’s just the sandy beaches of Provincetown Harbor. More post cards from the Cape to come…

Open Thread – Hello From the Atlantic

I’m with my family out on Cape Cod, MA enjoying the solstice sun and trying to stay away from the news. So, mudpuppies – what am I missing?

Open Thread: Found Aurora

Just searching through my Alaska archives and came across a folder of some wonderful aurora photos from late last year. You can see the rest over at my new photo site (and get prints, if you like) at www.zdroberts.com.

Open Thread: Think Warm Thoughts

I know Alaska has had a weirdo Winter, but here in New York we’re ready for it all to end. For now, here’s a photo from spring of last year at Bird Creek. Think warm thoughts.

Open Thread: The Super Bowl, The Day After

Well, people here’s your open thread to vent. Did your team lose? Win? Didn’t have a horse or hawk in the fight? Want to go on a Chomsky-esque rant about how the game is a distraction from the big issues that face our country? Go for it.
