Moose Appears in Finnish Passport
How cool is this? The Mudflats’ Brian the Moose has a cameo appearance in Finland’s new passports. So, in the US we get security chips in our passports and they get cool animated moose? I think it’s time for me to find someone in Finland to marry for citizenship. Be right back. [hat tip to Business Insider]
Open Thread: Remembering Pearl Harbor, 72 Years On
To the Congress of the United States Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the…
Open Thread: Alice’s Restaurant
It’s a Thanksgiving tradition in my family to dust off the Alice’s Restaurant record and give it a listen. Please enjoy this extended version of Arlo Guthire’s awesome song and have a great Thanksgiving.
Open Thread: Aurora is Coming
I know some places in the Fairbanks area have already spotted the elusive aurora but down here in Anchorage I haven’t gotten a glimpse yet. But prepare yourself folks, it’s coming… and with that, The Darkness. So make sure you bask in the light as much as you can and grab up the last of the summer crop at the local farmers markets.
Open Thread – Alaska Grown
As the Alaskan summer enters its final weeks, we at TheMudflats.net enjoyed some late summer carrots and strawberries bought at the South Anchorage Farmers Market. So, as school starts here in Anchorage next week, we ask, “What did you do over Summer vacation?”
Open Thread–2012 Highland Games
I don’t know if it was the smashing success of the Disney Movie “Brave,” which introduced new generations to Scottish culture, the incredible weather on Saturday, or some combination. Whatever it was, this year’s Highland Games at Eagle River Lions Club attracted the largest crowds Alaska Scottish Club organizers had ever seen! I admit, I grumbled a bit at the lines. But once my friends, family and I got a table and had our traditional tea and shortbread at the Tea Tent, I set forth to enjoy the day the same way I have since I attended the Games in…

You might remember that in September, a coalition of organizations launched the One Anchorage Campaign: The One Anchorage campaign filed an application this morning with the Anchorage Municipal Clerk’s Office to place an initiative on the April 2012 ballot asking voters to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Alaskans in the same legal protections already provided to women and minorities in employment, housing, and public businesses. Arliss Sturgulewski, a former state senator and Republican gubernatorial candidate is the Initiative Sponsor and Co-Chair of the One Anchorage Campaign. Former Alaska Gov. Open Thread – Scenes from Setnetting the Kasilof (LKB)
Here are just a few pictures from my weekend at the mouth of the Kasilof River: The constant, beautiful view from the beach is Mt. Redoubt Volcano — if you remember, it was the one spewing a bit in 2009. Occasionally in the nets we catch more than just Red Salmon — here a King decided to join us as well. In the other net, we also got a few small flounder. Saturday on two nets after both tides, the camp ended up with 34 Reds, one King and 3 Flounder. This is looking down in the direction of the…
Open Thread — Answer: Rogues, Wenches, Rock & Roll
Question: What does a typical summer weekend in Anchorage, Alaska involve? On Sunday, husband and I braved the pirates, shifty-eyed musicians and other neer-do-wells at the Crooked Toad Pub during The Three Barons Renaissance Faire. We were treated to raucous entertainment, deliciously bawdy jokes, (We had the kids go to more G-rated events at the Faire) and the singing was sweet enough that I released my tight grip on my purse to spare a few coins. Meanwhile, the kids found some kids: Previously, on Saturday, the folks of Fairview kicked up their heals and had a blast of a Block…
