Open Thread — Answer: Rogues, Wenches, Rock & Roll

Question: What does a typical summer weekend in Anchorage, Alaska involve?

On Sunday, husband and I braved the pirates, shifty-eyed musicians and other neer-do-wells at the Crooked Toad Pub during The Three Barons Renaissance Faire. We were treated to raucous entertainment, deliciously bawdy jokes, (We had the kids go to more G-rated events at the Faire) and the singing was sweet enough that I released my tight grip on my purse to spare a few coins.

Meanwhile, the kids found some kids:

Previously, on Saturday, the folks of Fairview kicked up their heals and had a blast of a Block Party with entertainment ranging from rock bands to the ladies of Mad Myrnas:

Here we have music by Wolf Electric. While I was there it looked like there was great participation!

The other two witches are heading off to Minneapolis on their Netroots jaunt so I’m here “alone” *sniff, sniff.* OK…not really…they’ll be posting from the hot and sticky Midwest!

Wish them a fond farewell and may it be a productive time for all!

Somebody in AlaskaArizona? Please do me a favor and ask her to call up Glenn Beck and either accept or decline his invitation to the “Restoring Whatever” rally in Israel.

Last week, Beck told his Fox News audience that he hoped Sen. Lieberman (I-Conn.) would lead a delegation from the U.S. for the event.

“I think the idea of the ‘Restoring Courage’ gathering in Jerusalem is an important idea and a very constructive one at a very important time for Israel, at a time that also could be destructive for Israel and for us, for the United States of America,” Lieberman said on Beck’s television show.

Lieberman added that the Beck rally is “not against anybody or any group” but is an opportunity “to stand with Israel at a time when a lot of the rest of the world is attempting to delegitimize Israel.”

I think old Joe made a new word there at the end of his quote also too. So Shakespeare.

    P.S. to Linda —

Heh heh, you’re the lucky one, believe me! Even if you do have to hold down the fort.

Minneapolis is my old stomping grounds, and that’s the last place you want to be in the middle of summer. Unless it’s air-conditioned.

Yep, for sure — they’re gonna be hot and sweaty, just waiting to get back to Alaska!

    • mike from iowa says:

So what you’re saying is Alaska is Minnesota with better mosquitoes?

  3. laurie says:

Linda, Glad you’re here holding down the fort.

I heard on CNN that Pierce Morgan will interview Chris Christie tonight. I see that Christie is Catholic. Now I am wondering if that is why the Republicans are wanting him to run? Get the Catholic vote? They seem to forget—-he is Not JFK!!!

    • benlomond2 says:

tue, but he’ll appeal to the anti-abortion crowd by being Catholic … although in America, Catholism is much more liberal…

    • laurie says:

I thought both Santorium and Gingrich were Catholic, also, too.

4:30 CST and it is absolutely pouring rain. My windows are rattling from thunder and there is water running everywhere outside. It is dark enough now I need house lights on. Just sent an Oriole to find Noah and Sons. May need an ark soon. Nasty looking weather popping up all around and my lawn mower is still sitting in the rain waiting for parts so I can put it in garage where it is hopefully dry.

Renaissance Faires are fun. There’s one in Tuxedo, NY every year. I last attended sometime in the mid-80s. I got a call from a friend to go one year, and turned him down. Later in the day, I thought it would be fun, and got a ride on the back of a motorcycle (no, I didn’t wear trashy leather and a crucifix). I was walking on the path through the woods when some kids started shouting at me to WATCH OUT. They were screaming because a garter snake was about to cross my path. About half hour later, I found my friend, and a good time was had by all.

    • mike from iowa says:

For the love of Saint What’shisname, that drove all the snakes out of where ever, what happened to the garter snake? Please don’t leave inquiring minds like mine, hanging. my original hometown of Cherokee,Iowa is advertising a Seussical at the local community theater. I’m gonna guess it has something to do with Dr. Seuss.

      • mike from iowa says:

Mag the Mick- I have an extreme excess of rain you can have. You and Thatcrowwoman can split it however it needs to be split, just make it stop raining here for a couple weeks, please. Please to be and stay safe. I would warn you about the dangers of forest fires, except I’ve never seen one live and don’t ever want to. I have led a pretty sheltered life.

  8. CO almost native says:

I agree, mike. I think if all of us are forced to pay very visible taxes to support these wars instead of using the (China) credit card, Iraq and Afghanistan would have never happened- or we would be out of there fast.

And I want the Department of Defense budget published in all newspapers and online- and on tv, too. also. The constituent screaming over the cost of their expensive toys might push some of our representatives to make major cuts, instead of protecting the all-important employers in their own districts.

    • fishingmamma says:

Agreed. All we hear about is how much is costs this country to feed the poor. Not a word about what it costs to feed the war machine.

  9. mike from iowa says:

America lost two more soldiers in Iraq. I thought we would have learned something after all this time. Iraq is a rat-hole and our brave men and women should not be there. They should never have been there and those that put the troops in harm’s way should be punished severely so the next nut case won’t decide to invade a sovereign nation for the hell of it. Where is the sense of urgency to bring the troops home? Nato is threatening to bomb ancient Roman ruins in Libya. I guess killing innocent people isn’t enough for some.

    • yukonbushgrma says:

“Where is the sense of urgency?…”

That is what distresses me too. I think our reps in DC have removed themselves so far from the people they represent, that they don’t even realize what they’re voting on or for. They get elected, get cushy benefits, like the limelight, and then their only job is to pander to the most likely voters. It no longer matters what their *constituents* think! — the people they represent!

Someday I hope the term US **REPRESENTATIVE** takes on new meaning. Right now most of them have no clue what their job is.

Don’t they know the average American citizen is their employer????

      Arrgghhhhh.

  10. jimzmum says:

What fun! I drove our youngest child and friends across Missouri to the KC Ren Fest for years. The trunk would be full of their costumes, and they had so much fun spending the day in their regalia. Middle school is perfect for Ren Festing. The first year we went, they had no costumes. The ride back to Illinois was spent by a gaggle of girls designing what I needed to make for them. The next year, they were set!

I watched a recap of that “debate” and was less than impressed. Seems to me they need to try harder.

  11. yukonbushgrma says:

Wow, brings back memories of the Renaissance Festival in Minnesota. Hub’s favorite memory is of two wenches in VERY low-necked garb putting ice cubes between their cleavage and hoisting them for the other wench to catch. ‘Twas quite fun to watch, actually! We also enjoyed riding on the elephants. And, of course, hoisting the meads (in the plural).

I’m posting this again below because the last open thread was a few days ago and I didn’t want to violate anything …..

Did anyone watch the GOP debate tonight from New Hampshire?

I’m not Rethuglican, but came home after a 10+ hour work day and just wanted to see what news I missed. And there was the debate.

Kept asking myself, if I were voting GOP, which one would I choose? Most of them touted the party line. The one renegade in the group, I think, is Ron Paul. He actually has some good ideas. I just wish I could see some compassion in him for the people who are hurting. I can’t look into the future with him as President and figure out what he’d do with all the folks out on the streets without jobs, health care, or homes. He thinks the free market and states can take care of that.

And I actually do think there are a lot of spending cuts that could be made without damaging the economy, mostly in top-heavy government and military [wars??]. Most of my working life was spent working for state & federal government, and mostly in budgets/accounting. I have seen first-hand how government spending can get out of control. I also have seen how cuts can easily be made when they are mandated and individual units have control over their financial destiny. It works. One of my former state units (not in Alaska) received a Malcolm Baldridge Award for Quality, based on exactly that … setting mission priorities and molding/monitoring your budget accordingly. That was in a time of budget cuts.

    Anyway, back to the debate.

I pretty much decided that if I were a Rethuglican, I knew who I would NOT vote for. And I think those who emerge will NOT be the ones the pundits expect.

Romney flip-flopped a lot and a few times didn’t even answer the question.

Santorum appeared, at least to me, to be a pretty boy with a huge opinion of himself.

Bachmann actually sounded more intelligent than I’ve ever seen! Certainly much more so than Palin. Maybe that means $P will go away? (Well, we can hope … ) Not sayin’ I want Bachmann, just that she didn’t sound too crazy tonight. I think she actually might have studied, unlike someone else we’ve come to know …

    • I didn’t watch. I can only take repub rhetoric in small doses. The problem with Ron Paul and libertarians, in general, is that their point of view seems to be “leave me alone to do things the way I want to, and you . . . the rest of you go somewhere and do your own thing and don’t ask me for any help doing it.” So, no, I don’t think he’ll ever get to the point that he cares what happens to others because I don’t think he does.

As for Bachmann – it does sound like she has been studying and I have to give her credit for at least trying. But it doesn’t take long to dig out all those stupid things she has said in recent years about government and the census and history. And then there are her views on climate change, light bulbs, and just about everything else, including that irresponsible comment about wanting voters armed and dangerous.

I can’t believe her opinions have changed but she does seem to be better at sounding more sane than SP or Sharon Angle did. It’s just going to mean that journalists have to do their job and ask her hard questions and then follow up with harder ones. And they can’t get all gooey about how well she did and give her a pass like they did with Palin.

      • yukonbushgrma says:

“…journalists have to do their job…”

Yep, Pat, totally agree. Let’s hope they do!

      • yukonbushgrma says:

Oh yeah, and another question —

Why has Ron Paul joined the GOP? Why isn’t he running as a Libertarian again?

I have to admit I haven’t been following him. Maybe someone has some links to info about this.

I know he’s attached himself to the Tea Party, but they aren’t really a party at all. And really, they aren’t even Republican! They’re just a group of political people, albeit pretty right-wing .

Is Ron Paul giving up some of his beliefs to get elected, and betting on the Tea Party? Is he pinning his hopes on the Tea Party taking hold in the GOP and then he becomes their hero?

        Inquiring minds want to know.

  12. GoI3ig says:

Always a good time. Time to go hoist a mead.

    • mike from iowa says:

      I’ll bite. What’s a mead?

      • MonaLisa (inCT) says:

It’s honey wine, a fermented beverage made from honey, water (and/or fruit juice), wine yeast, and often flavorings & spices.

      • Oh, it’s lovely – especially if you can find someone who makes their own. I wish I could remember the mead I had that was made in Washington state. I’m not much of a drinker but I liked that – probably a good thing I can’t find it anymore. 😉
