I’m not an engineer, so this question springs from the depths of my ignorance – what are the reasons that diesel-fueled automobiles are not pursued more vigorously in the U.S., generally speaking? Also, why is it so very difficult to develop diesel engines that can run well on biodiesel? Are there specific standards regarding biodiesel or does it vary widely throughout the country in its formulation, quality, etc?
I know that the diesel engines of passenger cars & trucks of the ’70’s were dreadful (*cough cough*) in many ways, but I was under the impression that they’ve improved vastly since then. The ones that I’ve compared side-by-side with their petroleum counterparts (same manufacturer, same model, different fuel for engine/different engine) certainly have better EPA estimates.
I have noted that Isuzu issued a statement at one point backing their diesel engines (trucks) regardless of whether the fuel was B5, B10 or whatever. How can they do that if it’s a money-loser for them overall?
Thanks to all who will take a swing at this question. I’m not trying to stir up an ideological argument, or pit engineers against one another.

I’ll see what I can find about bio fuels. When they first introduced bio-diesel for tractors,there was a major problem of jelled filters as b-d wasn’t suitable for colder weather use.Number two diesel has to be treated to remain stable in cold weather. Number one diesel is the winter fuel and costs more. Number two has to be thoroughly mixed with winter additives or it will jell up until treatment gets through filters.

The Tenth Circuit is infamous for decisions such as allowing Hobby Lobby to avoid fines while it continues to pursue its case against ACA- wanting to not pay for care it religiously opposes, like birth control.

Err…that TransCanada business deal is crooked as a dog’s hind leg…first of all our Grifter Granny handed them 500 million dollars of money that was not “State of Alaska” and belongs to another…birthright owner…
