Open Thread – Alaska Women Not for Sarah Palin, Part 5

Alaskans for Truth Rally, September 2008

As you may have noticed, the blogging has shifted into low gear for a little while.  Lots going on in my other life, and attention must be paid to the job that pays the bills before I head out to Netroots Nation next week!  I’m looking forward to the trip.  If it’s half as productive and informative and fun as it was last year, I’ll be happy.

And I will definitely be blogging from there, and keeping you updated via travel log.

    Help!!!

I just went to the Forum to check a message I got regarding the magnet/pin swap. I logged on, answered the message and followed the link to the forum page(? – not very good at forum stuff and I’m not quite sure what to call it!). When I went to send a message to the person who sent me the swap package, I got an error message and it wouldn’t let me do anything. I tried to log in again but kept getting the same error message. Then I tried to click on the Help link but got the same error message again. All I sent was a quick message to my swap partner so I don’t know why it says I spammed.

    Help, anyone?!?!?!

Here’s the error message I got:

“Sorry leenie17, you are banned from using this forum!
    We don’t like spammers here”

My one thought for the day.

I think I have said this before (a while back) but it bears repeating. My DH is an avid baseball fan. We were rewatching one of the Ken Burns pieces from his series on baseball the other night. It happened to be the episode about Jackie Robinson. I think that PO is facing exactly what Mr Robinson faced when he crossed the color barrier. The first person to do this, in any venue, is hit with a barrage of racial epithets and general ugliness in this still very racist country. Sadly, he has to take it with grace and try really hard not to fight back because that only makes things worse. Jackie Robinson’s friends say that the stress actually contributed to his death. I can believe it. I cannot imagine the kind of stress that PO must be under having to deal with so many of the country’s very real problems as well as putting up with this kind of crap. I salute his grace and control under fire. I am often ashamed to have the same color of skin as many of the people who propagate this kind of thing. But somehow, I knew that this is part of what he would have to face. This is why I have to have his back. We cannot allow these people to have control of the discourse all of the time. They need to be called out on it every time it crops up. At least it got news coverage and at least someone was shamed into removing it. I’m sure that there are those who will scream that it is an invasion of their first amendment rights (to slur and abuse others in public). Those people have to be shamed over and over and over again. I pray that one day our country will get past this and truely judge people by their merits. Perhaps the whole nation needs to go blind for a day….

The teabaggers would do so much better to just voice their grievances in a rational way than to stir all of this up. Perhaps they are doing the whole country a favor, though, by outing themselves so publicly. Better that your enemy be in the open…ugly as he may be….

I think Bristol and Levi are getting back together for pretty much the reasons they state. I think they sanitized the break up to an extent, saying it was because Sarah ran for VP, but not about all the other stuff that went on. The fact that they were afraid to tell her privately says truck loads about her parenting style/skills. And none of it–NONE–is favorable. And the fact that Bristol and Levi would say so says al lot about how they really feel about Sarah’s qualifications as a mom, MIL, and as a national leader. And none of that is flattering, either. Name another time this happened to a national figure. It wasn’t flattering to their public person.

I’ve taught high school for years and worked mostly with dis-functional families for a good many. This is exactly how many teens/young adults choose to handle things with out of control/controlling parents. They make their plans in secret, hint at the results (Levi apologizing) hoping to soften the ground, and then make the announcement in a public place (like with school personnel or in a restaurant) where they have protection from the wrath of the parents. Bristol has already separated herself from the family nut house by moving to Anchorage, right? She got out of there, and her life began to be more sane. She wasn’t bombarded by the wackiness hour by hour and began to formulate her own thoughts. Then Levi comes back, finds a much more sane Bristol and no body to interfere because Sarah’s on her Retread Speech tour, and they’re able to have a sane conversation and get to know each other for who they really are again. Don’t you think Bristol began to see Sarah’s over reactions for what they were as she watches the good neighbor fence go up via the internet and the out of control screeching that ensued? Watching from the outside was probably a real eye opener.
Will the marriage last? Who knows. So many marriages break up these days. My suggestion to them is that they move away from both their families where they can think their own thoughts and talk to each other without the crap flying in from every side. I think they’ll both have toxic MILs, and they’ll be happier as a family if they leave “As the Wasilla Churns” to their parents.
Good luck Bristol, Levi and Tripp. Go make your own lives. I wish you all the best.

My question is why does SP’s face book page never have opposing views? Is that against our constitution? Freedom of Speech anyone????

      Ditto Baker –

That’s what hubby & I did – moved 100 miles away. Close enough but we didn’t have EITHER side of the family dropping in. Made us depend on each other, learned to do for ourselves.

      • Baker's Dozen says:

We did, too. It made life so much simpler, and neither of us had crazy parents. 🙂

    • Wolf Pack says:

Good idea about moving away but Levi and Bristol are already on the grifter train. Surely they got paid to break this story to all of us.

I thought maybe their 15 minutes was over. What other stunts will they pull to remain in the news?

Even if they wanted to, I think that it is an impossibility at this point for them to move away from Mama Bear. What with her bendy-straw stocked private jet, Sowa will never be more than 4-5 hours away.

To make matters worse, Levi will have the perfect mother-in-law from hell. Can’t say he wasn’t warned though. I do wish the young couple the best, though. I just don’t have high hopes.

    • lilybart says:

I would like to think that Bristol went rogue, but alas, nothing is normal with this family and this is just another ploy to create the perfect family for the First Family Miss Wasilla dreams of.

Of course Palinbots will automatically say “OBAMA Is a Narcissist even MORE!” Which proves the point that everything Palin does is driven by obsessive intent to outdo the man who defeated her in 2008.

one of the comments on this article:

“Sarah Palin was arrested today in possession of an original thought. Police spokesperson Maede Apnaem stated “We still do not know whose thought it is but we are certain it does not belong to the accused. We are trying to track down its original owner but the facts surrounding the accused are horribly distorted.”

According to eye witness reports, the thought has been horribly abused and it is in terrible condition. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Thoughts has been called in. Local head of the SPCT, Sam Ottergiy tells us “The thought has apparently been starved and beaten in an attempt to make it violent. It has also been isolated from other original thoughts though we are not sure if this was intentional. We are not sure if it can be rehabilitated and may have to be put down.”

Sarah Palin is quoted as saying something unintelligible.”

Has the nation gone nuts? How is it that a total fraud like Sarah Palin can garner such attention? She’s a combination of Chauncey Gardner and Paris Hilton–how can anyone in their right mind think that she can be the President of the US? Ben Smith writes his take on Politico (and sadly, he’s not alone). Kathleen Parker (who had written scathing pieces about Palin in the past) also wrote a flattering column in the Washington Post about her today. Once again, has the world gone mad?

But there is a whole second string of better spoken GOPB’ers in the wings.

One to watch is Kevin McCarthy. I live near his district and went to his townhall last year. This guy is as slick as they come. Saw him on Mathews a few months ago and Chris was trying to trip him up but Kevin is to smart and quick on his feet. I’d love to see if Rachel could out this guy but he may even be a match for her.

Read someplace yesterday that KM, Cantor and Paul Ryan have a book coming out soon. These three should be watched. If for nothing else, they will represent a more well spoken wing of the GOPB.

She needs to draw them from FOX, or she will be an also ran.

Once again, has the world gone mad?

now that i am a grown woman i understand the longing, the desperate longing to find rest. to find safety..from the kind of people who occasioned Juneteenth

from Wikipedia…Though Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had minimal immediate effect on most slaves’ day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas. Texas was resistant to the Emancipation Proclamation, and though slavery was very prevalent in East Texas, it was not as common in the Western areas of Texas, particularly the Hill Country, where most German-Americans were opposed to the practice. Juneteenth commemorates June 18 and 19, 1865. June 18 is the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. On June 19, 1865, legend has it while standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3”:

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.[9]

That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a name derived from a portmanteau of the words June and nineteenth.

Former slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebrations. Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas the following year.[9] Across many parts of Texas, freed people pooled their funds to purchase land specifically for their communities’ increasingly large Juneteenth gatherings — including Houston’s Emancipation Park, Mexia’s Booker T. Washington Park, and Emancipation Park in Austin.[9]

US Weekly Magazine article about the engagement :

    http://www.usmagazine.com/healthylifestyle/news/exclusive-bristol-palin-levi-johnston-are-engaged-2010147

Now comes the hard part: Getting the blessing of Sarah Palin, who has made no secret of her feelings for Levi. He irked her last fall by claiming that she referred to her infant son Tr ig (who has Down syndrome) as “retarded.” She fired back, telling reporters that anyone who posed for Playgirl would “say and do anything for even more attention.” Later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she dubbed him “Ricky Hollywood” and called his “aspiring p*rn” career “heartbreaking.”

Says Bristol, “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board.”

    • Freakout in Kansas says:

        I wish them the best.

Right on Aussie I wish hem the best and would also tell them to stay away far away from her parents,at least as much as possible.and Levi also is the one thatneeds to forgive the plins for what they did to him.palin the fraud tried to destroy the young man.The both need to get on with their own lives and not worry so much about how the parents react to this.I think Levi’s mom will be fine with itonce Bristol says she is sorry for how she acted towards the family.

      • leenie17 says:

She might have said that she and LEVI were being abstinent until marraige, but did she make similar claims about that other guy (Ben?) she was seeing before the Big Reunion?

For the sake of their son who needs some stability in his life, I sincerely hope that this works out for all three (or four) of them, but, with all the history and dysfunctional family drama they have to battle, I don’t have high hopes. They’re both very young, extremely immature and are very clearly under the thumb of Her Highness, Queen of All She Surveys, which doesn’t bode well for the young couple. Even if she was 100% behind this marriage (which she doesn’t appear to be), she is so unpredictable that whatever she supports this morning, she could be completely opposed to by tonight.

Since Levi has already tossed his family overboard, the best move for them would be to get the heck out of Wasilla and start over somewhere else where Mommy Dearest’s influence is somewhat diminished.

      • BigPete says:

        You might be right!

Apparently they got back together three months ago, and engaged two weeks ago. They told the magazine they are waiting for sex until the marriage, as Bristol has pledged to be abstinent. Fortunately they want a short engagement and hope to marry in the next six weeks.

It reminds me of the comment last night about nobody noticing the gorilla in the room!

      • aussiegal77 says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s all a little too close together. Some commenters over at Gryphen’s blog even predicted it already. Levi apologises, falls on sword for Palins and voila, engagment!

        Bristol probably is preggers again.

    • thatcrowwoman says:

So they tell the world before they “ask” Sowa?
Sowa, motherhood’s Epic Fail. Must s@ck to be Sowa.

Says Bristol, “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be…” Which is timely evidence for my Radical Leaders comment.

      Sowa, j’accuse!

      • Yeah, that comment from Bristol is probalby an honest one, but I find it very sad that she is still so afraid of her mother and what she will say. I’m glad I’m not part of a family like that.

I do wish Bristol and Levi and Tripp much happiness, though. I just think they will need to move some place else to separate themselves from the family drama on both sides. It’s not healthy for them and it’s not healthy for their child, or children, as the case may be.

    • BuffaloGal says:

There’s no way Palin didn’t know about this already. It ain’t fer nuthin that her Twitter post of last night announced that she, Todd and Willow were leaving for a mountain climbing hike. When I read that early this morning I thought, ” Ok – something’s up. She’s getting out of town for some reason ”

And, by the by , does that woman EVER spend time with her small children ?!?! ( though I suppose she might be hiking with both of them strapped to her back. Can’t rule that out )

      • leenie17 says:

“Well, of COURSE I’m leaving Cessna, uh, …Gulfstream, uh….oh yeah, Piper at home because SOMEbody’s got to watch that other one…what’s his name again? …Treck, Trundle, Trudge, Trinket…Truth (no, I KNOW that’s not right!)… “

    • G Katz says:

Update in the HuffPo article http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/14/bristol-palin-levi-johnst_n_645580.html. Sarah says that Bristol believes in “redemption and forgiveness.” Of course, the article also says that Bristol blames her mom’s candidacy for her breakup with Levi in the first place. So, does Sarah mean that Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness for the Grizzly Mama herself? Ha. I don’t think so.

I have to admit. I feel very happy for them. I think they were robbed a very important piece of their life and the joy of starting a family together, whether they planned it or not. I hope it will work out for them.

      • barbara says:

i find it interesting that her statement says that bristol believes in “redemption and forgiveness” – what about bristol’s mother? hmm. apparently not, and that’s based on her words and deeds since that dark day in 2008 when i first learned she even existed, not on her wording of this statement, which i just find interesting in a psychological sort of way.

        • G Katz says:

Yeah, we’ll see about that, won’t we? Levi has apologized for misrepresenting things around the old Palin compound. Will GM (Grizzly Mama) apologize to him for the demands she made of them during her campaign and for the things she’s said about him since? If I were a betting woman…

    • leenie17 says:

Has anyone else noticed that in the cover photo, Bristol looks nothing like Bristol?

      Overdone makeup?

      Excessive airbrushing?

A little ‘work’ done while Mama was getting nipped and tucked (gotta take advantage of that group rate, ya know)?

I had sincerely hoped that the rumors that Bristol had some plastic surgery were false, but the cover photo seems to indicate they were true. I just don’t understand why a pretty young woman would want to ‘fix’ something that’s just fine and end up looking like a nondescript Barbie doll who can’t be distinguished from the multitude of young harpies running around Hollywood.

      So sad…

    • Natalie says:

How sad that Bristol is so intimidated by her parents she felt the need to hide her engagement to Levi. What should be a happy occasion is not. Sarah and Todd’s response to this news was underwhelming. I wish Bristol and Levi all of the happiness their lives can hold. They will be okay, if they can keep Sister Sarah away.

  38. BuffaloGal says:

Let’s start a pool on the next kid’s birthday…since the engagement was announced today I’m going to guess Bristol has been preggers for a month or two…I’m going with January 8th.

      • barbara says:

lol that made me laugh- but, you’re probably right. abstinence-only contraception tends to result in little ones.

      • aussiegal77 says:

Abstinence? Pfft! way to practice what you preach Bristol!

But all snark aside – I am happy to see them married, I hope it’s the real deal (rill dill) because Tripp needs full time parents – not full time attention whores.

        I wish them the best.

Memo to Bristol: Getting your mom’s blessing is important but if she doesn’t jump onboard – your family should come first now, Tripp needs you to be a mother too.

        • lilybart says:

They got back together for reality show bucks, mark my words. And Miss Wasilla’s fundie cred. Will not last.

          • KayE says:

You’re right. I did hear on tv today that they are talking about doing a reality show. Maybe something about being young parents. Gee, wouldn’t that be just sooo interesting? Whatever!

        • jojobo1 says:

This is a late reply, but I have to get my pool entry in, so I’m saying Groundhog Day — Feb 2, 2011.

And, BTW, I hope I’m wrong, and it’s actually 2012, or never.

But I will accept the virtual prize if I’m right.

    • Irishgirl says:

Now isn’t that interesting? I wonder if Levi let his family know before he made this public announcement?

      • merrycricket says:

Irishgirl, If I remember correctly, Levi isn’t speaking to his family because Mercede refused to stop blogging. I think Mercede had it in a post.

I’d like to know what this will do to Bristol’s little scam er I mean “consulting” business.

      • lilybart says:

I just read that Sherry did NOT know. Levi asked her to give him a haircut for a photo shoot but what the photo shoot was.

        • aussiegal77 says:

Wow. Not sure why Levi is treating his mom this way. The Palins may be difficult to deal with but from what I have seen, the Johnstons have been much more supportive of his decisions, however hard it was for them to undestand.

          • lilybart says:

This happens to kids. My divorced friend “lost” her daughter for a short time. Father told her the child support was HERS now that she was in college and the daughter bought it and rejected the mother. Months later she realized what was going on and now is back knowing mom is the sane one!

    • B in Co says:

Yes, thanks for the memories. I was there. So when Glenn Beck comes in Sept , is there a plan to let him know what ALASKAN WOMEN think of Palin? and him? No doubt the 2 will huddle together, probably at his event. Kind of a 2 birds with 1 stone possibility for us & truth. The show will get some press so this provides a chance to show the lower 48 what many Alaskans really think. IMHO, it’s crucial to let the truth get out whenever possible. Thanks for your efforts.
