Open Thread – Netroots Eve

Twas the night before Netroots…

And the packing is not yet complete.  But I remembered back to a strange tale that I never did share from last year…

(everything goes all blurry and you hear harp music)

It’s the last day of Netroots Nation 2009 in Pittsburgh. It’s been a fabulous time, and I’ve met so many Mudflatters face to face for the first time. We’ve had an outstanding Mudstock Meetup, and everything is starting to wind down.  Brian the Moose whom I brought with me on the trip has had his photo taken with many notables including politicos and bloggers, one of which was John Amato, the founder of one of my favorite blogs of all time Crooks and Liars, and fellow C&L blogger David Neiwert (left).

Well, standing out in the sunny parking lot of the hotel one morning, I see Mudflatter ‘EnoughWithTheTrainwreck.” I wave and smile, and she waves me over and holds out a moose that looks just like Brian.  It’s a strang coincidence because the one she hands me is missing an ear, just like mine…  A strange coincidence?  Hardly.

It seems that ‘EnoughWithThe Trainwreck” (EWTTR) had overheard a conversation between John Amato, and someone on the other end of the phone.  And she heard how John had mentioned how he’d ended up with a moose from the night before, and he didn’t know how to get it back to me.  So, EWTTR offered to make sure Brian returned safe to me.  She knew it had to be me, because how many bloggers are walking around Pittsburgh with a moose!?

Here’s where it gets hinky.  EWTTR goes back to John Amato’s room to fetch Brian, and he decides that maybe he kinda likes Brian and maybe he just might want to hang on to him for a while.  Well you can imagine EWTTR’s outrage at that!  She swiftly sprang into action and descended on the hapless blogger, disengaged Brian, and returned him safely to his blogger.  Disaster averted, through serendipity and brute force!

Thanks EWTTR for your courage, and for the best Brian photo ever.  I’ll try to keep a tighter hold on my wayward moose.  Just so they don’t have to rename it “Crooks, Liars and Moosenappers.”

Shannyn and Dave the Producer and Zach Roberts and I are all headed to Vegas in the morning.  I’ll be checking in with updates!

Many of you may know Kilia from her posts to this blog for almost years. She has also been a member of the Mudflats Forum almost from the beginning. Her husband and beloved partner and companion passed away recently. A memorial in his honor will be held in late July, about 2 hours from Anchorage.

There is information especially for AK mudpups here: https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,10336.msg115845.html#new

As well as information for everyone here: https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,10307.0.html

      Whew…what a contrast!

The Clintons parented while the Palins reproduced.

There’s a drastic difference between the two.

Nearly anyone can reproduce but not everyone can parent. For all the problems the Clintons have had during their marriage, there was never any doubt that their priority was always Chelsea. Like the Obama family, they took great pains to keep her out of the spotlight and keep her life as normal as possible. She turned out to be very grounded and clearly has her life in order.

So far, the Palins look like they’re 0 for 5.

Thank you, Benlomond. Even though the article pointed out the obvious, I’m so glad this topic is getting attention. But the poll! (I voted). How can 19% vote saying Sarah is the better parent???

good one. but you know, a lot of Palinites wouldn’t understand the significance of Stanford and Oxford. like you have to be good to get in, and you come out great. a thinker. funny Rachel Maddow went to Stanford and Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar), too.

You don’t need a twitter account to view the posts and there are many links to really good articles and info. It’s kind of like the junk drawer most of us have where we keep all of the local menus and coupons only it’s more organized and ….well…. it won’t help you order a pizza or lo mein.

The fact that there are hundreds of women far more qualified than you to be vice president of the United States of America but you emerged from the election as the new figurehead of women in politics undermines the fight of other women to be taken seriously in the public arena. the other side of that story is that i had no idea WHO john amato was at the time and told him “i don’t care how important you are – i WILL have that moose”. turns out he has a splendid sense of humor and of course an enlightening and important blog.

On my way to work this morning I kept hearing about $arah’s ‘rufudiate’ tweet on the morning newscasts. And I though to myself, why oh why does (seemingly) every one of her tweets make the front page news cycle? I honestly can’t think of anyone in recent history who has had the ability to make news like this on a whim. I’m sure this has been hashed out here before but it is a truly disturbing phenomenon. And to think it’s enabled mainly by the very media that she puts down so frequently.

I think my only comforting thought was that she is only relevant as long as people pay attention to her. Maybe someday we will stop. (And yeah, I know this post is yet another (small) example of keeping her relevant even though it’s to criticize her).

    • A fan from CA says:

I see what she is doing and I agree that it’s working. However – how long before this whole fake humanization of someone who doesn’t have the first clue about everyday humbleness gets old?

I know that her audience love it, why wouldn’t they? They love everything she does – she could steal from their wallets right in front of their eyes while stuffing a garbage bag full of clothes from their own wardrobe and have a tow truck haul away their car and they would STILL write her another check! But what of the rest of America?

Will Americans buy Palin’s schtick? I get that politicians have to do a certain amount of connecting with the electorate. But will Americans elect another feel-good commander-in-chief they can pal around with and feel cozy about? Or will Americans continue with the 2008 choice of electing someone with competence and actual policies?

It’s like those romantic comedies that I get sucked into all the time: the music, the setting, the loveable couple who are only too human. They baffle us yet we hope they get together in the end. All the while we know it’s an idealistic fantasy sold and packaged by Hollywood of another life that’s alien to the majority of the population. Love & romance is never this easy nor the solutions to relatioship problems so clear and straightforward.

Will Americans get sucked into the fantasy Palin is peddling? Not long ago, Alaska did. Will the lower 48 learn from Alaska’s mistake with its former flame? Time will tell……

Her fans adore her and many of her critics are praising her ability to push forward and be noticed. She has played victim and is winning the understanding of too many people who agree that the media has treated her unfairly (a point to which I disagree–I don’t think the media has gone after her enough). Say what? People “in the know” have not opened up at all about Palin – although that will change with time like it always does. A reality show showing Palin to be an @ss, if ever created, would likely come after she’s already blown it big time with some scandal, or monstrosity of stupid so big it creates a black hole and sucks her in backwards to disappear from sight forever. I kind of like scenario #2.

I’m betting mudflatters can agree with this from the article above:
“…Sarah Palin is, by the evidence at hand, dangerously simple-minded.”

He made a point that’s concerned me, although he did it much more eloquently that I can. But the point is that opposing the building of this Islamic center—which is not even a mosque—gives the extremists even more ammo to use against us. How many times have we heard each other and our leaders call out to the moderate Muslims to do something to help. When they do, they get this kind of a backlash? Not right, at least IMHO, based on everything I’ve read and heard so far about the project.

There has always been something that completely creeped me out about JD Hayworth (besides his generally skeevy personality, condescending manner and tendency to lie!). I have never been able to watch him speak for more than a few seconds, and there was something terribly odd about his mouth that just made my skin crawl.

I was flipping around the tv a few minutes ago while finishing my lunch and came across a debate between McCain and Hayworth. I forced myself to watch his face (probably NOT a good idea after just finishing a tuna sandwich!) and it hit me. The lower part of his face looks just like Howdy Doody!

Sarah Palin’s Endorsement In New Hampshire Senate Race Includes Geography Goof

CONCORD, N.H. — Sarah Palin incorrectly calls Alaska’s Kodiak Island the largest island in America in a Facebook post endorsing a Senate candidate in New Hampshire.

The Big Island of Hawaii is about 440 square miles larger than Kodiak, where Palin and her family were headed Monday.

In endorsing Republican candidate Kelly Ayotte (AY’-aht), Palin also strayed a bit from the facts in praising her for having “won” a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

As state attorney general, Ayotte defended a law requiring parental notification for teenagers seeking abortions. But it was repealed after the U.S. Supreme Court sent it back to a lower court.

*****How did Americans arrive at the obscene point where people routinely say, “If you don’t agree with me you aren’t a real Christian” or a “real American,” or a “genuine patriot”? By what measure of chutzpah did the Republican right challenge the patriotism of those who disagreed with their Iraq policy during the Bush years? That’s not American democracy. Rather it smacks of Europe’s bellicose totalitarian regimes of the past century.

Too often in recent years, the Republican right has smeared its critics as soft on communism and crime, timorous on defense, and only weak-wristedly engaged in the war on terror. The three Republicans I most admired in my lifetime were hardly liberals and two were personal friends: Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, and Bob Dole. But they never would have demeaned their fellow Americans for disagreeing with them on something as serious as war.*****

Elsie, if only that were true. It has been about 150% humidity for the last two weeks. We have been languishing like lizards because the slightest expenditure of energy causes the entire body to bead up and drip. It is supposed to be better this week. And really, a dry heat is way better. I will take 105 of dryness to 90 with humidity any day.

AKM, best wishes for a great conference. As it happens, I will be in the airport Sunday picking up my sister and step-mom. I will keep a sharp eye out for you and Shannyn, but I don’t have high hopes. If someone walks by and asks, “Where’s Brian?” you will know your cover is blown. Have fun!!

    • thatcrowwoman says:

hehehe WakeUp, welcome to My world! It’s the heat AND the humidity.

“They” tell me I’ll acclimatize, but it has been more than 20 years now, so I’m thinking maybe not in This lifetime. It took me a few years to finally “learn” how to sweat, but now I could teach a master’s class! 🙂 One of the many joys of living in the world’s largest outdoor sauna.

Actually, I’m fine with it…as long as I’m up to my eyeballs in the “humidity” of my big bag of water out back…but even it has been bathwater warm this week. I’ve mastered the fine art of floating with a book and beverage…DH Happy checks periodically to make sure I’m not like the proverbial frog/lobster in the kettle. Boiled/stewed crow…not a pretty thought!

On the upside, we’ve got a bumper crop of kiwis and peaches coming on strong. (thatcrowwoman…always searching for the silver lining, bless her heart…)

      • WakeUpAmerica says:

There are no pool heaters in this town either. In fact, the water often gets too warm from the sun. I too have lived in my town for 24 years and I’m still not acclimatized. I guess I should mention that I don’t live in Las Vegas. I’m in the Upper Mojave Desert on the west side of Death Valley. We have the same weather as LV though. Truly sucks in summer.

Bless thatcrowwoman’s heart, indeed. Wow, did you just make me miss my mother’s peach tree (that’s now my sister’s peach tree; she lives in mom’s house). And I’ve never had a just-picked kiwi, I’ll bet it’s SO juicy! Love, health, and peace, thatcrowwoman. Caw!

I checked to see just HOW bad the temps are in Vegas about now.

From Weather Underground and Weather.com, I got numbers in a range between “Highs around 103 on the west side of the valley…around 113 on the east side. South wind 10 to 20 mph.”

The GOOD news in all that is the humidity is so low….in the teens….that the heat index will make it feel like it is ONLY between 103-113. Righhhhhhhht.

Of course, with a 20 MPH wind, it’s probably like standing in a convection oven instead of an ordinary one.

Yo, AKM—That’s what air conditioning was invented for…Use it, Hon!

And have a wonderful time. Las Vegas will be a better place because you, Shannyn, and the guys were there.

    • lilybart says:

And Las Vegas should be all rooftop solar power for all that air-conditioning they need and will continue to need more as we heat up.

      OT, but so obvious.

Also, too, painting every roof white saves lots of energy, simple and cheap.

      • A fan from CA says:

Lost Wages actually came into existence because of the cheap, clean hydro-electric power created by Hoover Dam. Back in the day their was a big surplus of power created by the new dam.

        • lilybart says:

          Interesting, thanks!

Of course now, water is becoming a problem for the whole SW.

  65. Isn’t that Brian’s way!? I too, lost track of Brian at NYC Mudstock last August. Luckily, bubbles rescued him and returned him to me. That Brian… always looking for the party!

My Brian has a bite mark in one ear from my cat. Weird coincidences…

    Have fun at Netroots. Represent.

    • InJuneau says:

I remember the photo of that incident (the cat bite!). Hope Brian is recovered from the injury (and hasn’t had too much to drink lately!).
