And now a little campaign levity. Goodness knows we all need it! And who better to come up with the perfect Alaskan political campaign ad than the incomparable Mr. Whitekeys!
This is an super piece about how O’Donnell and Palin get away with their nastiness and the boys can’t strike back:

Thanks for the wake up humor!!!
Had to share.
We were lucky to have gone to Mr. Whitekeys years ago on our visit to Alaska. My brother and sister in laws insisted! Wow were we glad they did. Still have and wear my spam apron lol
I would vote for him
and love that Obama bests Palin in polls in Alaska!
A dear friend emailed me the link to an inspirational three-minute film:

Enjoy!
Alaskans – I have my vote by mail ballot since we’ll be out of town for the general elections.
Does anyone have a good thought or bad thought on Ballot Measure 1?
Ballot Measure 1
Name: Increase Number of Legislators and Districts
Election: General – 2010
Type: Legislative Referendum
Summary: This Act would amend the Alaska Constitution to increase the number of state legislators from 60 to 66. The Act would increase the number of senate members from 20 to 22. It would increase the number of house members from 40 to 44. Six new legislative districts would be created as a result 4 in the House and 2 in the Senate. The changes proposed by the Act would go into effect on or after January 1, 2011, after a new redistricting plan based on the 2010 U.S. Census is adopted.(7659)
I’ve read the pro and con from the booklet, and they all make sense.
http://www.elections.alaska.gov/doc/maps/area/statewide.pdf
look at the map of districts we ended up with last redisrticting…
count how many more folks there are in South Central now… how much bigger will districts be outside SC after reps are added to SC? how will people in Western, Northern, and Northeastern Alaska stand a chance for effective representation with districts as large as some Eastern states?
We would likely add some Republican seats in Southeast if we do this but we can make that a temporary situation if we work at it 🙂
Rural Alaska stands a chance for districts of a decent size if we add Legs… I’m voting to add em.
And already planning to watch what kind of carving goes on here in Southeast…
OK that makes sense. If you got your pamphlet today, look at the “against” argument and tell me what you think. It sounds like he’s saying we’ll have less representation by having more representatives. Is that confusing or what?
ummmm…
rather interesting to have Gatto taking the liberal mantra of one (hu)man /one vote to heart…
http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/020310/sta_558290115.shtml
Baker v Carr shifted representation to that model. Rural America lost ground then and continues to do so with shift of population to urban centers.
There was value in the ruling but unintended consequences as well.
Rural America, rural Alaska , within total numbers of reps allowed under law, ended up with larger and larger districts ( and will continue to do so) with fewer and fewer people in them.
To me, over time this has shifted too much power to urban centers on issues which affect all of us- but have different outcomes in different places.
The “just move” folks in urban Alaska have no clue about rural Alaska’s needs for infrastructure nor anything else… Most of our wealth flows out of the bush, not enough flows back. Smaller districts, more voices might adjust some for that.
Gatto is pretending he’s being fiscally conservative here but he’s the fruitloop who embarressed the state with his “I love to hate the fed but I love me some pork also, too” interview with the NYT recently.
He’s more worried that northern and western Alaska might end up with a couple more Dems ( opposite of what we might end up with here in Southeast ) than anything else…
oh, forgot- an example is the effect the Los Angeles basin has on the whole state of California ( no offense to any So Cal mudpups here, esp our beloved fawnskin )-
Water politics, slice-of-the-pie politics, etc are deeply affected by the huge bloc of voters there.
The far northern part of the state is largely ignored because of low numbers of people and yet that is where water politics have ended up damming important salmon streams/rivers for power and in one huge project , to send water south …
This is in response to Alaska Pi but no reply button.
CA is a good example of how the growth in districts shifts influence to urban issues for the most part. But for the water fights the biggest influence are corporate farmers in the Central Valley who are supported by Faux noise to take the water from the urban areas. Corporate Ag hates environmental rules so they even recruit in the red areas like Orange and San Diego counties. It’s amazing to see urban dwellers go against their best interests in the water wars because of the faux brainwasting. But they really have been taught to hate little fish.
In fairness, the CA water issues are very complicated and most folks don’t even touch the surface of understanding what is going on so it always fought on emotional issues like “little fish”, “fairy shrimp” or some frog. The R’s generally set the agenda and the Dem walk around sounding confused.
I’m so looking forward to Jerry because he knows the issues and we will finally have a Governor who can cut through a lot of the nonsense that is usually tossed around regarding water.
Pew: Growing Cell Phone Poll Bias Favors Republicans
……….”Before the 2008 election, they found that calling only landline phones introduced a “small but real” bias in favor of John McCain, an average bias of 2.3 percentage points on the margin on nine national surveys conducted between June and October of that year.
This year, according to today’s report, the Pew Center finds that sampling only landline phones creates an even bigger bias — “differences of four to six points on the margin” – in favor of the Republicans. The most recent survey in the study, conducted in late August and early September, also involved comparisons based on a subgroup of “likely voters” chosen using a traditional seven question turnout scale (similar to the classic Gallup likely voter model):”…………………….

I’ve always believed you, MUYS, this article is more vindication.
Yay! Vindifudiation is a good thing!
A great link to forward to all our progressive & conservative friends & family – we are being and will continue to be swamped with Political ads from BOTH sides. We need to fact-checking the statements/ allegations, who approved it, and who is paying for it.
snip] Not only are the ads themselves getting widely debunked, but the justifications the groups are offering for the ad onslaught attacking Democrats (that liberals and labor do this too) are also demonstrably false or misleading. We’re witnessing a massive disinformation campaign flooding airwaves across the country that could change the outcome of major races and shift the balance of power in Congress, funded by money from undisclosed sources, justified with still more falsehoods and disinformation. Former mayor: Alaska Senate candidate Miller ‘not truthful’ about borough employment

Hi AKM, This is off topic but last night I asked my daughter< Nicole Porter to post pictures of my "Stop the TeaParty" calling party I held Saturday before last and to post pictures of my daughter's "Stop the Teaparty" calling party and I gave her the forum link and she called me and said she had signed up on the forum and she was asked if she had a website and she put her "Scentsy" website in and she said that she was banned because forum does not silicit. She was not trying to solicit, she thought you were asking about her website. She apologizes and would like to finish submitting her profile and the pictures.
Both parties were sucessful. People we did not know who were all Moveon.org members showed up at our houses, with cell phones, cell phone chargers, and goodies and over both Saturdays, across the country where phone call parties that were being given, we collectively made over 200,000 calls to remind Moveon.org members to get out and vote and to take everyone with them. We had very good experiences. I can tell you that the media is wrong, the Democrats are fired up!! One of the members we called said, " I am fired up and ready to go with my family and friends. Do not worry, we will be at the polls with bells on"!! Those were the kinds of responses we got. We would like to share the pictures with Mudflats.
califpat, all is good now. 😀 I have PMd you.
Thanks Forty Watts!!!

We have McMentum! Yes we can!
Rachel has a McAdam story on her blog today. Still calling AK a red state? Let’s go add comments to straighten this misinformation out.

Get the barf bags out muddies…
“Standing in front of a row of American flags, Palin said the “lamestream media just doesn’t get it, and when they don’t believe what perhaps your message is, so they want to belittle you and mock you and treat you with much disdain, you know, I think, well they can do that to me, that’s fine, because I know truth.”
“You know what, you can say whatever you want to say about me but I raised a combat vet and you can’t take that away from me,” she added.
http://www.sandiego.com/news/sarah-palin-speaks-at-san-diego-fundraiser
Don’t think she is telling the “whole” story!!!!
Meant to add—-I haven’t heard anything from this son —-never see him with his family. Is he now out of the service already?????
IF he could stand his mother she would have wanted him in that military audience so she could show him off.
But either he can’t stand her and wants no part of the circus, and/or he is too messed up or there is something about his service that won’t stand scrutiny.
He also doesn’t want to answer questions, ever, about the school bus brake lines he cut, which is how he ended up in the military in the first place. Granny Grifter always glosses over that part of the story.
Palin: “I think, well they can do that to me, that’s fine,”
Except…..it’s not “fine” with Sarah Palin. It infuriates her….and she just can’t stop herself from whining about how much it infuriates her.
The MSM proper have actually treated Mrs. Palin with kid gloves. She and the MSM have a symbiotic relationship in which they publicize her every move uncritically, and she lambastes them as villains, so they react by more feverishly covering her every move….even more uncritically.
Reality check: It’s the comedians, bloggers, and opinion columnists who mock, disdain, and belittle Palin, but she has to stick to her narrative that it’s the MSM out to crucify her because that’s how she keeps her base defensive and unwilling to listen to any other views except her’s. Ultimately, this strategy will fail….because Americans admire people who are stoic, roll with the punches, don’t QUIT, or cry “victim” at every opportunity.
The polls continue to show her declining popularity, reflecting the fact that her narrative doesn’t resonate with the majority of Americans. A normal person with a modicum of self-introspection would be able to make course corrections, but Palin is as rigid and inflexible as a drill pipe….and the intelligence of aforementioned pipe. OOPS! I just mocked Sarah Palin. Now I’m part of the MSM….
yes. we can take that away from her. what she raised was a self centered, arrogant, delinquent. if he went into the military it was because the other choice was jail. i, for one, have never seen any reports that said her son was any where near combat field operations. all i know is that while everybody else is being held over two and three rotations this “combat hero” is home after a year. gimme a break.

If McAdams wins this election, Alaskans can take credit for their good sense.
Imagine Scott McAdams in the U.S. Senate with Mark Begich!
Because this is an open thread, I’d like to run it south to Chile for a moment. Here is a country that was savaged by a horrible coup in 1973 and forced to live under a nightmarish, right-wing junta for decades. After taking thier country back from that bastard Pinochet, Chileans faced a myriad of challenges rebuilding their society, their economy, and their mutual trust. After one of the most porsperous parts of the country was devastated by an earthquake, they suffered a subsequent blow losing 33 miners in an underground mine collapse. But when it was found the miners survived, the entire country mobilized. Anyone who watched the Chilean President and his wife, along with President Morales of Bolivia keeping watch at the drill site had to be moved. Watching thouse tough miners being pulled out, cheering and defiant, is one of those times when we realize how lucky we all are to be part of the human species. Chile and its brave people have given us all a lesson on how to survive, how to live, and how to be human. Viva la Republica de Chile, y los Chilenos heroicos!
And all the other countries helping out. Fabricating the the rescue cylinder in a short time. Things can get done cooperatively and quickly. It does indeed give hope.
mag – thanks for bringing this up. This has been the most amazing day. I get a lump in my throat (tears, as well) as each miner is brought up. Can’t help but think it might just be luck, but it seems to me that Chile’s mine safety laws and procedures are much better than ours. I do know the drillers are from the US, and could handle the job here at home. But the mine itself seems to have been prepared to handle an accident, much better than any of ours.
Can you imagine miners surviving in our country for 69 days?
I agree. Congrats to the driller from Colorado, pulled from his job in Afghanistan (helping the military, I think) by his company, who completed the delicate operation of drilling through to the miners. International cooperation can work-
Our military really is fabulous! and yes I am a proud Liberal too miss wasilla you idiot.
If only we deployed them like in Chile and Haiti, for GOOD we could live up to that “American Exceptional ism” I keep hearing about.
I’ve been watching it too today…..shedding a tear as each man is brought up from the bowels of the earth. It is sort of overwhelming in a really good way.
They can blame Pinochet on Kissinger.
And WE should blame Kissenger for Chile and a host of other disasters.
But this mining miracle has reminded me that we really are more than our collective past, if that makes sense. We can use our good powers to work with othrs and literally move mountains. Score one today (or maybe score 33) for the power of hope and humanity.
oh well said!!
After only four hours of sleep the night before, I was exhausted yesterday but simply HAD to stay up and watch the news as the first miner was brought to the surface. Anyone who didn’t shed a happy tear watching them smell fresh air and embrace their families for the first time in weeks should check to see if they still have a pulse.
How heartwarming to see all politics, egos and blame be put aside to bring together people from all over the world in the amazing effort to rescue these brave men. And how inspiring to hear the stories about how the miners worked together to stay healthy and sane during their captivity.
This story says so much about the indomitable human spirit.
I spent a few hours last night and a lot of today watching this…. In fact, I was glued to it, couldn’t seem to turn it off….
I shed many happy tears, and like you, felt it was inspiring, heartwarming, and said a lot about the indomitable human spirit, as well as how wonderful and cooperative humans can be when they come together unselfishly to aid those in need.
It is an amazing story. I have followed this since day one, and am truly awed by the effort that was so carefully directed at the rescue. Every single resource was brought to the table and every problem was worked out.
This effort has been a huge contrast to the gulf oil spill, which was ‘handled’ by a corporation, in secrecy.
When you go to the polls in three weeks, ask yourself who you really want running this world. Corporate shills or statesmen?
This link came into my inbox today from Senator Sanders (not my senator):
http://sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/news/?id=875c3ef4-5598-4bb3-9515-5692d0cc2a24
“Wall Street banks, investment banks, hedge funds and other financial firms are set to pay $144 billion in compensation and benefits this year, a 4 percent increase from the record-breaking $139 billion paid out in 2009, according to the survey by The Wall Street Journal.
“Wall Street caused the economic disaster that led to the loss of more than 8 million American jobs. At a time when the middle class is disappearing due to the greed and recklessness on Wall Street, it is unconscionable that big banks are rewarding the same executives that caused the worst financial crisis since the 1930s with record-breaking pay packages,” Sanders said. “Instead of doling out huge bonuses, Wall Street should be investing much of this money into the job-creating productive economy. These Wall Street executives would not have jobs today if working-class taxpayers did not bail them out.”
As this is the Open Thread – just got a Land’s End catalog today. What is with all the unshaved men? Is this the new style? They sure don’t look rugged!
I heard there will be a U.S. Senate Debate tonight on Cnn and Cnn.com @ 7:30 PM.
between Christine O’Donnell (R) and Chris Cons (D).
Even though I cannot vote in this election—-it will be interesting to hear just what the “witch” has to say.
I am not sure about the time–Eastern standard maybe?
Andrew Halcro blog says Miller was fired from Fairbanks North Star Borough. Is this revelation that caused Miller’s tantrum yesterday?
`
That he was suspended without pay. Rumors about the DD-214: I can’t recall the exact verbiage, but – it was “Unflattering”. I do remember the word “Discharge”.
I also heard about “Multiple Anonymous Sources” from the North Star Borough. Emails between Miller and Palin about Ruedrich in 2008. Using multiple employees borough computers for political gain… maybe they’re getting the necessary sign-offs from said employees before releasing names / docs? Nothing about what his 2:00PM press conference talked about: HIPAA, etc.
One thing I did find note-worthy Mondday & yesterday that I also noted on HuffPo & adn.com was this:
Palin was SILENT about good ole’ Joe on her Twitter and Facebook. Given the gist of the press conference, wouldn’t you think she would have been the first person saying “YEAH! Shut down that LSM! You Go, JOE! Talk only to Fox from now on!” – but nothing like that happened.
One of her bots responded to me that she was at Bristols DWTS show in LA, but THAT didn’t stop her from tweeting on her blackberry right after (during?) Ted Stevens funeral service… very, very odd silence regarding the whole matter… and we KNOW $arah ALWAYS has SOMETHING to say!
`
I’d bet that she knows a lot of secrets about Her Boy Joe that she is worried about being discovered. She can’t afford to be connected with any more candidates with skeletons bursting out of their closets. Perhaps she’s quietly distancing herself while she can.
Is that yet another ‘thump, thump, thump’ I hear under the Palin bus???
Murkowski, Miller would be members of the Republican gang
By Barbara Belknap | My Turn
……….”For those Alaskans who are thinking that a vote for Lisa Murkowski is a good idea because it might stop Joe Miller from winning, think again. The Murkowski of 2010 is not exactly the same Murkowski her dad appointed to the Senate in 2002. She is a Republican gang member, and she votes accordingly.”………….
http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/101310/opi_719721726.shtml
Again, I bow to Juneauites!!!
Scott McAdams for Senate!
HP has a story on the polls but it doesn’t make it clear that Scott can win if misguided Dem don’t vote for Lisa to stop Miller.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/13/new-polls-show-senate-con_n_760809.html
I commented about how Scott has raised more money from individuals than either Lisa or Miller recently.
Scott can pull this off. Voters just need to be reminded that Lisa has become and obstructionist and is not good for AK or the rest of the USA.
There’s an interesting article (also on HuffPo) that talks about the increasing lack of accuracy in polls that rely only on landlines, since more and more people have only cellphones. Those polls tend to lean more towards the Repubs.
So any of the races that the polls show with a slight Repub lead may actually end up going to the Dems on election day…as long as they get their lil’ hineys to the voting booth!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/13/pew-research-cell-phone-p_n_761760.html
Yep! Polls are famously bad up here. Nanner, nanner.
Looks like Think Progress reported on a portion of the funds from “foreign corporations” – although the Rove-bots are stating “it is ONLY dues” and we co-mingle funds so … well – we can always SAY they aren’t paying for attack ads
snip] The Chamber is being deceptive. In addition to multinational members of the Chamber headquartered abroad (like BP, Shell Oil, and Siemens), a new ThinkProgress investigation has identified at least 84 other foreign companies that actively donate to the Chamber’s 501(c)(6). Below is a chart detailing the annual dues foreign corporations have indicated that they give directly to the Chamber (using information that is publicly available from the Business Council applications and the Chamber’s own websites): [end snip

lol great video, he’s very talented. At least Zyggy thinks so.
Love Mr. Whitekeys! We had a chance to see him the year before he closed up shop in Spenard at the club. He never fails to miss hitting the nail right on the head. We turn to him first in Alaska Magazine each month.
Thanks for sharing, AKM!
The continuing saga of princesses and dwarfs. Dwarfs being a stature thing .I intend to make sure that the ticket prevails.
Thanx, nem
Keys has put the risqué back in discussing the mating habits of birds.
There is a yahoo birding group for Alaskans. I been a member since day one. The keys retired and became a birder and joined the group. Thank goodness. Like I always wanted to know the vibrant mating rituals of frustrated male grouse on some earthen back road in the wilds of Wasilla.
Okay that last sentence was a bit of a stretch. But the first one wasn’t.
Actually I understand am aware of the habitate, thanx to you description. nem
I had another idea, but it just left. Enjoy, nem
Hey there- I’m going to the Restore Rally in DC and understand there are some MudPups going too?

Keys! We still miss that Whale Fat Follies! I was just going back through some old pictures and found one of Mike at the Crow Creek Mine about a year before he died. No one sang the Alaska song like him. The Whale Fat Follies kept politics interesting, fun, and crusty!
“These astonishing images show an extraordinary new artificial reef off the east coast of Mexico made entirely from human statues.”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1319593/Amazing-new-artificial-reef-Mexico-sculptures-real-people.html
Peep-reefs, that is amazing and sad. Too bad we’ve destroyed so many natural reefs we have to try to make some in our own human-parasitic likeness. Gah.
I kinda like the idea of turn-about.
For centuries we’ve destroyed the environment and the homes of other creatures to make a place for ourselves. Now the coral can ‘destroy’ these people statues and create new homes for themselves. Seems only fair!
Mr. Whitekeys is amazing! What a lovely spoof of the repuke party and the teatards!!!!
Thank you AKM and Mr. Whitekeys….:)
🙂
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Whitekeys when I came up for the Crafters’ Smackdown in February. He MC’d the event. What a neat man. Just funny and nice as can be. It was one of the highlights of my trip.
Daal is good! You might have to fool with it some to get used to it, but keep going. KtS, you can use the flours for about anything, but you have to adjust everything to make it work. The one bomb we had was with rice flour. Just a mess.
That was a Hoot! I now begin to understand why you all love Mr. Whitekeys (first time I’ve seen him). But so many people have mentioned him, he’s got a big following.
When he’s showing that fish on a plaque, I bought my dearly loved Brother-in-Law one just like that for Christmas before he passed away. Gave us all massive laughter. This was fun! Think I will watch a 3rd time.
Anyone else can’t eat wheat, delicious Italian bread, Margarita Pizza? Damn, just found out after over 30 yrs. What’s up with that…. after 30 yrs?!! Not cool. Frankenfood has apparently caught up with me. (hybrid wheat?!)
Well I just found Chickpea and lentil flour at our Indian Grocery store here in Chicago. I am a happy camper!
I googled ‘Chickpea flour Indian’ and found out about Daal, an Indian like crepe but with no wheat ; chickpea and lentil flour, salt and water. (that’s it! really)
If anyone’s interested just google Daal crepes or Indian chickpea crepes. (cast iron skillet best to cook on)
Does it taste different? Like, could it be used for Christmas cookies? One Sis has a grandkid that’s allergic to wheat, but maybe this would substitute?
I found the batter with more chickpea flour was almost better than normal crepes. just to experiment I added a bit of baking soda to my own mix of Polenta (like cornmeal, 1/3) and Chickpea flour(2/3),( water to make soft batter, they came out like pancakes(thicker) or crepes (thinner batter) I loved it!
The Chickpea flour is actually more tasty and nutritious than frankenWheat. Try substituting Chickpea flour for any recipe . But I highly recommend googling “Chickpea Indian Crepe, Youtube”. They show you how they do it, I tried my Polenta/chickpea blend and they were both amazing.
To answer your question, I think you can substitute Chickpea flour for any recipe. Experiment and find out. My tries have been the same or better so far, though haven’t tried cookies yet. (lentil flour wouldn’t be as tasty for most Americans I don’t think)
This stuff makes fairly decent biscuits, though I haven’t tried it for anything else yet.
http://www.gooddayglutenfree.com/Bobs-Red-Mill-Wheat-Free-Biscuit-and-Baking-Mix/productinfo/1BM20511/
Just don’t bother with the rice bread. Yuuuuch!!! Each piece weighs about a half pound. Otherwise, yeah, I’m right there with ya. But boy do I feel better after eliminating gluten from my diet.
My wheat-allergic daughter has for years eaten a rice-almond bread that’s not bad, especially toasted. We used to use it as a base for homemade pizza, too.
Try King Arthur flour (you can google it) for gluten free and wheat free products, too. And you’ll be supporting an employee owned company, not the Kochs’ or someone else like them.
{{{{{dreamgirl}}}}}
same thing happened to my “baby” sister…she’s lived gluten-free for a couple of years now.
Love King Arthur flours!
(I’ll be in Chicago next summer for the NEA convention…maybe we can meet up for a mini-mudstock.)
I am five hours from Chicago. We WILL BE MEETING.
Mr, Whitekeys should run. He’s got it all figured out and has a leg up on the competition. The years of the Whale Fat Follies really helped him hone his skills.
