    Such a lovely photograph.

    Okay–open thread, here goes!

    Who’s supplying the popcorn?

    There Will Be Blood
    By PAUL KRUGMAN
……..”The fact is that one of our two great political parties has made it clear that it has no interest in making America governable, unless it’s doing the governing. And that party now controls one house of Congress, which means that the country will not, in fact, be governable without that party’s cooperation — cooperation that won’t be forthcoming.
…….How does this end? Mr. Obama is still talking about bipartisan outreach, and maybe if he caves in sufficiently he can avoid a federal shutdown this spring. But any respite would be only temporary; again, the G.O.P. is just not interested in helping a Democrat govern.
My sense is that most Americans still don’t understand this reality. They still imagine that when push comes to shove, our politicians will come together to do what’s necessary. But that was another country.”………….

  3. sierraseven says:

More competition over cooking halibut. And Sarah squalling about why, oh why, does everything have to be a competition?

Ooh, ooh, me, pick me, teacher, I know the answer, I know!

Because insecure narcissists make everything into competitions, because it’s never enough for them to be good at something – they have to be better than someone else.

    • benlomond2 says:

is it over yet ? chortle… let’s put her on one of those crab fishing Alaskan boats, and see how she does !!! Sarah in a slicker at the rail as a wave comes over…. hehehehhehee!!!

      • Baker's Dozen says:

My cousin used to work as a translator on Russian fishing boats–did it for several seasons, though she gets terribly sea sick. I suppose Sarah could see her from her house and figured she could work on a fishing boat too, you betcha!

  4. sierraseven says:

Ah, they’re off in their little ol’ family RV – a huge, concert-tour style bus. Earlier in the show she comments about being “cooped up” in the bus – cripes, I know plenty of folks whose houses aren’t that big.

  5. sierraseven says:

Commercial break – and some questions so far:

How many rounds did Sarah actually fire before she hit a clay?

Does NOBODY in the Palin family know what a briss is? Have they really been calling Bristol that all her life?

Does no one in Alaska have a name except for the Palin family?

    • Dagian says:

I’m guessing that “No”, no one in her family knows what a bris is…and that makes me laugh.

  6. sierraseven says:

OK, so I’m more into it than I thought.

  7. sierraseven says:

Oh, lord – a preview of next week. Apparently there’s going to be a lot of focus on Trig.

  8. sierraseven says:

Now the slime-line – which Sarah has obviously never done before, either.

    • Bretta says:

Hillary Rodham (before she was a Clinton) worked the slime line in Alaska as a summer job, in college, I think.

      • sierraseven says:

I remember reading about that. What, was Sec Clinton more of a rill pipple than Sarah?

  9. sierraseven says:

Now they’re doing another of those outdoors Alaska activities that Sarah just loves but somehow never got around to in her 46 years – kayaking. She delivers the squawking “tranquility” line form the trailers, which ends in asking why they always have to compete – uh, what? She was the one making it into a race. I never raced anybody in a kayak – I always just liked doing the equivalent of strolling.

  10. sierraseven says:

“Most every Alaskan kid has worked on a slime-line at one time or another”. Really? Show of hands?

  11. sierraseven says:

Sarah and “Briss” (gotta love Sarah’s cultural obliviousness) hold a still-beating halibut heart in their hands! Oh, this isn’t gonna play well with the Libruls – but Sarah already expressed her contempt for the eebil leftists, who get “wee-weed” up at her shooting firearms. Not political, oh, not at all.

  12. sierraseven says:

Ah, I’m just not into it tonight. I’ll just comment that Sarah seems to be endlessly providing her family with bits of wisdom – turning every experience into a “lesson learned” or a moral. And I love the tight, “I’m a good sport, yes I am, sure I am” smile when not one, but two rill pipple want to congratulate Todd on his Iron Dog stuff!

Oh, wait – there was just a warning coming out of the commercial break about disturbing content – well, ALL of it is disturbing – I think this may be in reference to the halibut-bonking.

  13. sierraseven says:

Shall I live-blog the show tonight, yea or nay? I’m not watching the 1700 showing – but being, as I said, of strong stomach and having a fascination for the grotesque, I’m going to tune in for the 1900 showing.

    • benlomond2 says:

I just finished dinner after taking oldest with her BF to see Harry Potter… Stomach settling , so I will NOT be watching Miss Quitty Pants…. seeing Voldermont was enough for me,,,scene where Ron destroys the locket was GOOD ! Can’t WAIT for the final movie to come out !

    • vyccan says:

SS, Are you sure you want to add to her viewing numbers?

      • leenie17 says:

Does cable use the same system of counting viewers that network does – the Nielsen family – or do they have a different way of assessing audience numbers?

    • GAmom says:

I just watched Paul McCartney’s concert at the White House on PBS, I know it’s a rerun but it was a great show. And I will keep the good feeling for tonight.

  14. vyccan says:

‘Palin’s trajectory is still upward because of the push she’s had, but the fuel is sputtering out.’

-“Lord, please hear our prayers.” You must know we all hope you are right. Is this your first prediction, or are you an expert? 😉

    • BuffaloGal says:

” Palin’s trajectory is still upward because of the push she’s had, but the fuel is sputtering out. ”

Damn – Too long to be the best bumper sticker of the year! Such a good one , tho!

    • slipstream says:

      Is that what’s sputtering out?

  15. leenie17 says:

I hope that your prediction is 100% correct and I believe the recent signs indicate that you just might be right.

The RNC knows that no candidate can win the general without the middles of both parties and the independents. She may be good at firing up her base and raising money but, outside of her Sea of Pee ‘bots and many of the TPers, everyone knows that it would be a national catastrophe of previously unseen proportions if she should ever be elected to the White House. However, if there are enough candidates to split the votes, she just may have enough support from the far rightwing to win the primary, which would guarantee that the Dems win the general. The RNC will now allow that to happen.

Her unfavorables are rising and even the number of people who say they like her but would NEVER vote for her for POTUS are increasing. The campaign to bring her down seem to have started and I sincerely hope that, however they do it, she will be removed from the spotlight for good. I would be a very happy camper if I never had to listen to her screechifyin’ lies or hear the name Palin again!

  16. Baker's Dozen says:

    I, Baker’s Dozen, am making a prediction.

Palin is done. Like a missile heaven sent, she continues its rise even as the fuel sputters out, and she continues her way upward for a time in conformity to one of Newton’s laws. (Let me see. Newton’s laws.
“If you’re an elitist intellectual, you’ll get hit on the head by an apple.”
    No.
“Gravity is what Lisa says I lack.”
    Nah.
“An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
    Ding! We have a winner!
Palin’s trajectory is still upward because of the push she’s had, but the fuel is sputtering out. You can tell because in the last several months, prominent Republicans have said things about her. At first, they walked them back, and they went into the left-handed compliment column (I’m left handed, so wish they’d come up with another phrase). Now, they’re not being walked back AND they’re being given by people who are hard to attack and who are hard for the right not to believe because they’ve always believed them (Barbara Bush). That comment was no accident. Lisa has put her in her place, and very deftly (it’s like pushing on a rubber band–stretch it too far and it can let go and get you. Stretch just a bit, and it falls to the floor when you let go. Hard to push back against her mild statement.)
The establishment isn’t there for her. Their money sin’t there, and Murdoch’s won’t make up for an RNC that’s finally seeing the light of day about her, Steele, and her candidates that are doing more harm than good. There will continue to be little snarks–they’ll start gently referring to her entertainment value–and they’ll be promoting her for that skill. They’ll find a more viable candidate with hard right views to energize the base, and then they’ll expose her as a phony right wing Christian, which won’t be hard because she is a phony.
She’ll fall hard unless she decides to go the entertainer route. She’ll always have her followers, but we have some really obtuse people in this country that still refuse to believe the earth is round, that we went to the moon, that there was a holocaust (ask my dad. He helped liberate Dachau. He can’t talk about it and can’t imagine how anyone survived it.), there is no climate change, and the earth ends in 2012 (which, if she believes that, means she shouldn’t bother to run, right?)
Yes, she’ll continue to rise for a while, and the fall to earth may be slow (due to that gravity Lisa says she lacks but obviously doesn’t), but the events that make that fall happen are already in motion.
Thank you, Sir Isaac! You intellectual elitist, you!

What a beautiful photo. What is so intriguing about it is you can’t tell if it is a shot taken from an airplane of a drift just feet below the camera. Nice!

Winter has arrived where I am. Light snow, early darkness and a definite “chill” in the air. Bring on the Winter Solstice!

  18. Lacy Lady says:

Bretta—–I think you hit the nail on the head. The Palins are just wanting more attention!

it’s going to be a long two years

  20. Bretta says:

Dang, Summer’s over? I’ve been telling my mom (newly transplanted from WA to AK) that the thermometer fluctuates – that it’s not Winter yet (hey, I’m telling the truth; it’s not officially Winter for a few more weeks!) but I did see a ring around the Moon last night and pink sky this morning – that’s usually an indication that snow is imminent.

I don’t mind driving in snow, that’s all right. Ice is what is wicked. Do Not Like Driving on Ice. Not Good. Even with studs and four-wheel drive. Slow Down – Take it Easy – Sleep In. That’s my plan.

  21. ibwilliamsi says:

    Stunning.

  22. BuffaloGal says:

Thanks , everyone, for the well wishing. It was definitely an eye opener. I had been feeling increasingly exhausted for the past months but due to lack of insurance, I just kept toughing through it, along with other symptoms like muscle weakness, shortness of breath and heart palps. Word of advice from a stupid woman ? Don’t DOOO that !!

I had even decided to reduce engagement in all things “Palin” because it had been making me feel really awful. I thought it was just a mental thing but while I was in the hospital and hooked up to all sorts of monitors I made an interesting discovery. Palin’s commercial for her TLC show came on at one point, and I swear on a stack of bibles that, my monitors showed a jump in heart rate and blood pressure. I had a BP cuff on continually and pressure was taken every 15 minutes. I went from 145/90 to 155/94 directly after seeing her.

I had arrived in the ER with a BP of 205 / 165 so thank goodness I didn’t get there to find her face on the TV in the waiting room!

The Surgeon General should have a look in to this . She’s bad for our mental and physical health !

    • Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

She’s sure bad for MY blood pressure!

    • leenie17 says:

Yikes, girl, you’re lucky the top of your head didn’t pop off with BP that high!

Put on some cozy flannel PJs, listen to some soft, calming music, drink some hot tea and relax…and that’s an order!

      • BuffaloGal says:

        You’re so bossy! ( but that’s a goood thing !)

Would it be ok if I watch sitcoms instead of listening to calming music ? ( and can I swap wine for tea??)

        • leenie17 says:

Laughter is the best medicine (and no side effects!) so two thumbs up on the sitcoms.

As for the wine, I was going to suggest that in the first place but didn’t know if it would cause havoc with any medications you might be taking. Since it won’t, imbibe away and enjoy!

In the meantime, I will be raising my glass of chocolate milk in a toast to your good health. 😀

  23. Marnie says:

To spin Angle when you get snow you have to make snow ice cream.

  24. Baker's Dozen says:

BuffaloGal–Good to see you back, though I can’t help but think that your problems were caused by the Bills using Trent Edwards as a scapegoat and letting him go. Yes, I blame the Bills. But he’s now in Crow’s vicinity. (I watched him play in high school, so am rather attached to him).

May your recovery be swift, secure, and full of joy.

    • BuffaloGal says:

Bakers Dozen – You might be on to something. The past 2 games I’ve told my son that this team is going to kill me. Come to find out – the games really WERE sending my pressure skyrocketing! Between Palin and the Bills , it’s no wonder I ended up in the hospital !

I did like Trent Edwards and thought they cut him much too quickly.

And on that note – Bills just won!

      • leenie17 says:

        “Bills just won!”

        The lottery?

        American Idol?

        Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes?

        A free turkey from Wegman’s?

Couldn’t possibly be a football game, could it????? That makes TWO this season!!!
Woo hoo…something to REALLY be thankful for! 😉

        • BuffaloGal says:

I know! Right ??? And what a game it was!

Doing the “Yay for Us” dance with Leenie. Lord only knows when we might get to do
          it again!

          • Baker's Dozen says:

            I want Trent!

            I want Trent NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • leenie17 says:

And damn, I missed it all!

I spent the afternoon doing one of my least favorite chores of the fall…cleaning the garage in preparation for the coming snow and ice season. My poor car loses its spot in the garage from April until November to my collection of gardening ‘stuff’. After the rest of the yard is tidied and readied for winter, I tackle sorting out all the stuff in the garage to make a spot big enough for my little car. It’s always a messy, dusty job with the added bonus of worrying that I’ll discover that the mice who moved in last winter are still there (no sign of them so far in the garage or my attic…whew!).

We’ve been lucky with the lack of snow so far, but I doubt that our snow-free weather will continue for much longer so I decided it was time to hunker down and tackle the job. Figures I’d miss the one good game of the season! 🙁

  25. Moose Pucky says:

Snow and wind. Beautiful. Must be November. Have a good Thanksgiving week, all.

  26. vyccan says:

WIND 10 TO 15 MPH. ALONG TURNAGAIN ARM AND HIGHER ELEVATIONS…EAST
WIND 10 TO 20 MPH INCREASING TO 25 TO 40 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON.”

    UGGG!

  31. barbara says:

a beautiful picture but i’m glad i don’t live there. here in NC we’ll have some snow. a few days. that’s ok.

  32. thatcrowwoman says:

So I’ll try to restrain my snow lust, which my sisters in northern climes find totally obnoxious…especially since I reside in Northwest Florida on the Gulf of Mexico… Sunny and 78 degrees here this morning (dodging snowballs and other projectiles)

but I do so love the cold and snow…and will retire to colder climes one fine snowy day (10 years and counting, unless I hit the lottery first!)

Set my compass North, I’ve got winter in my blood.

I find it fitting that Thanksgiving is coming up and turkey is around the corner. There are so many articles about her -it is like an overdose (of enough) tryptophan to knock out a moose.

I enjoy reading and it seems like there are always singing about the, “Dems fear her.”

She has been using our President as a human pinata for years now.

I think the Republicans are projecting their fear. What is going to happen when she comes after them with her big stick? I find it funny that the only voices we hear are coming from Republican women. Reminds me of the mother who yells out, “be careful.” Perhaps they better start listening. I will coin OMG’s words. (Man-up!!!)

  35. BuffaloGal says:

    Morning, All !

Back from the hospital. Scary stuff, that was. Had collapsed twice and by the time I arrived at the ER it felt like my heart was going to absolutely explode right out of my chest. Have to go back for many tests but for now, it’s good to be home. Even if I end up spending the holiday with a turkey sandwich and a glass of cranberry juice, I’m going to mighty thankful, indeed ! ( and, being one of the millions of uninsured Americans, after I receive the bill, I’ll be lucky if I can even afford a turkey sandwich and soda!)

Love the snow photo. Not only because it’s beautiful and calming but also because it’s not outside my Buffalo window, quite yet. Won’t be long, though.

Bobby Jindal is on Meet the Press. Had to mute him for most of it. He irks me. Unfortunately , I took him off mute just in time to hear him say that Palin is a compelling figure as a presidential candidate. Of course he had to qualify the statement by saying she’s only one of many potential candidates. I don’t think we’ll be hearing too many Republicans say anything differently , at this point. They won’t be able to afford to say anything negative about her but they all know better than to seem like they are ” Rah Rah for Palin “. Hopefully it’s the beginning of the end for her.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

    • OMG says:

    • Firecracker says:

Hope you are feeling better. I helped a friend recently that had to go to the hospital. Most hospitals have a program for uninsured patients that will at least reduce your bill. I had to ask for my friend to get the paperwork. You should check with the hospital if they didn’t give you anything. I wish we would just wise up as a nation and get a single payer system. Nothing will ever be perfect but I hate to hear about people that have to go to a hospital and then stress about their finances while trying to get better.

      • jojobo1 says:

My daughter just had an accident on her motercycle last week and since she just started a new job,no insurance.Thhey do have programs and did talk to her but because three of us own a home togedther she said she did not think they would help her.but we still over 200,000 on the mortgage so the house shouldn’t count for much even divided into thirds. She had emergency surgery and will have to go back to have a cast put on..after the swelling goes down????No wonder people go bankrupt from hospital bills.

I suppose I could leave the carrots in the ground and cover them with straw, but they’re at the back of the yard and I’d have to shovel through 60 feet of 3 or 4-foot snowdrifts in a couple of months to get to them!

This article examines what most of us have been forecasting about a Palin presidential run. The GOP thought that they were using Palin but she has successfully used them to propel herself forward. She will dispose of them when she wants to with little damage to herself and likely become the GOP candidate for 2012. It’s time for the GOP to “man up” and destroy the monster they created.

He seems to have hit the nail right on the head with this analysis. I’m ashamed to admit that the truth revealed here does scare me as it confirms my observations. Since the last election, my confidence level has been severely shattered. I look at Bachman, Rubio, Perry et al and I no longer assume that she’s too dumb to win.

    • Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

He is exactly right, and it is terrifying!

I would love to see a website that exposes all her lies and manipulations in a very factual (i.e. non emotional and without an excess of exclamation marks) way — starting from her city council days and progressing through her terms as mayor & governor, and any other offices she’s held, and also covering the last two years.

I’d love to see the facts and the claims, perhaps side by side in column form, with links to articles that demonstrate what she has truly said and truly done. I think something like this, with the facts all laid out in simple form, with no smears, attacks, judgements, etc, would speak for itself to a lot of people who are on the fence about her but are tempted to think that she’s being smeared by the Liberal Left.

Palin and Reagan – nice contrasts,,,,

    • OMG says:

Excellent piece. I hope that Nancy Reagan joins with Barbara Bush in suggesting Palin stay in Alaska (sorry Alaska but I know you all can effectively deal with her). I dream of a day where Mrs. Reagan says something like, “Mrs. Palin, I knew Ronald Reagan and you Madame are no Ronald Reagan!”

If members of the GOP really did care about their hero (Reagan) and the future of their country they would do everything they can right now to discredit the fraud Palin and put an end to her political career.

Snow. Ugh. I hope we only get snow on weekends, so I can enjoy it from inside the house, rather than inside my car. Hate driving in the white stuff.

    • TNbluedot says:

      Amen!

    • Baker's Dozen says:

I love snow. I enjoyed driving in it, as long as it wasn’t white out conditions. And now I live in a place where I can expect snow pretty much when he!! freezes over. I love it here, but I do miss the white stuff, the skiing, some ice fishing, hiking, and the quiet.

First BIG rain of the season here, even had a thunderstorm, which is unusal here. will be another difficult holiday season with me working thru it, but wife and kids will be at Grandma’s. Not complaining tho’, at least I’ve got a job ( did 5 mos on unemployment 2 holiday seasons ago- boy did THAT suck!) and oldest doing well medically! Thankful things are getting better, not worse..:)

    • Ben in SF says:

Seems as if the Bay Area always gets one big thunderstorm as the seasons change. And it’s now a lot cooler (my sweetie snuggled up to me all night). Yesterday started with a big double rainbow over the Golden Gate as the sun rose beneath the edge of the gathering clouds.

Sounds to me like you need a Thanksgiving encore. No law against having a Turkey Day, Part II when the whole family can get together and celebrate. Just think…double the pumpkin pie!!!

      • benlomond2 says:

ooohhhh Pumpkin Pie !!!! wife makes two, has one slice, and I get all the rest !!!! YUM ! chortle, I freeze the 2nd one so I can eat it next week !

        • CO almost native says:

Pumpkin pie! And pecan pie, and brandied cranberries, and spanakopita, and… dang, I gained five pounds just thinking about it 😉

          • tigerwine says:

Spanakopita – now you’re talking! Which reminds me, I’m out of ouzo.

          • benlomond2 says:

spanakopita !! Looks like I’ll be making a trip to local Greek deli …wife is a California Girl, so Greek food is not in her resume of cooking ( makes a MEAN Chile Verde, tho’ !) She DID do baklava one year… came out good !

    • Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

Yep, I’m loving our first big rain and the thunder too (I’m in SC, just down the hill from you). So glad you have a job and that your oldest is doing well.

      • benlomond2 says:

Thanks… no matter how tough life gets, so long as I can keep everybody alive and healthy, I can overcome the rest of it…

I love this time of year. Everything slows and the quiet just screams. Waiting for the next dump of snow so i can enjoy. Was watching the Rachel Maddow talk at the John f Kennedy school. Worth listening to. Sorry but i guess you will have to look it up. I know it is important now to write or call our state reps as to what they will do to fix our broken electoral process. I wonder about the status of the villages in Alaska for this winter? Perhaps a roundup or feedback here would be good. I know i could ask at other sites but my time is limited.

  47. Kath the Scrappy says:

Yeah, we appear to have snow heading in tonight or tomorrow too in Seattle. This town shuts down (and I don’t even try to drive in it). Ran to Sam’s Club, bitter cold tonight, after thankfully realizing upfront I’m almost out of toilet paper! Stopped and bought Stouffer’s turkey TV dinner just in case we find ourselves snowbound. If not, I’m planning to do the restaurant gig and the neighborhood Shari’s makes homemade turkey with trimmings. Got my fingers crossed.

    • Kath the Scrappy says:

My Sis and Big Brother are coming for 3 wks at Christmas. So I’m saving my celebrating for after Dec 15th. Her present, the last one, arrived today so I’m done with the shopping. Nice.

  48. WhichTruth says:

Only 30 days till the days start getting longer.

    • Okay, I take the snow, when I remember that. Thanks WhichTruth

      • Hope says:

That is a gorgeous picture. Many of my family members have been to Alaska, I need to get on a plane and go. I hate flying!!!

        • Baker's Dozen says:

You can drive. That’s how I got there–pre pavement!

        • Bretta says:

Driving it is lots of fun – especially on a motorcycle – especially the Canadians – they are nice people and will take care of you even if they are mostly amassed on the northern border of the contiguous USA (cue the Pay-lin Paranoia Machine!). British Columbia is pretty but looks mostly like Eastern Washington – The Yukon Territory is the Best. Go up the Klondike Loop to Dawson City then over the Top of the World Highway. Well, you’ll need a snowmobile for that this time of year. Heated gloves would be good, too. Well, it would be best to come in May or September. The rest of the Summer it just rains… see you then!

          • MDB says:

I do not ride any longer, well some, but, old-age-pains and all started to kick in 🙁 Anyway, I used to visit the harbor towns in Canada and some off-road hikes, very beautiful, fun, overly-dang friendly people 🙂 , plenty of good eats and conversations. I have to admit, of all the places I have traveled, Canada has been one of the most welcoming-a warm community feel, Maine Bar Harbor area as well – http://www.barharborinfo.com. Never been to Alaska, but plan to soon…….need to have in-depth chat with you guys over this monstrous meanie you let loose on the lower 48.

@HopeNo: I didn’t care much for flying either until a friend took me up in his cessna and we flew over the Appalachian Mountains…..the beauty from above, takes the fear right out of you….that is until errrr friend decides to play a poorly thought-out-planned pilot error joke…..after a change of cloths and a long…long stern talk, went back up and anytime I have an opportunity to fly over scenic destinations I do.
