Shannyn Moore is Moving – Nudge That Dial!

Starting Monday, our very own Shannyn Moore will be moving her radio show from its current location at 1080am, up the dial to 1020am.  Same time, same studio, same Dave the producer, but…  she’ll be back on a Fox affiliate station.

You remember when Shannyn was on one day a week at rightie KBYR? Well, it’s deja vu all over again, only with different call letters.  The oddly named brand new KOAN will be lighting up the dial, as KUDO goes dark. The owners of KUDO, the IBEW, have decided to get out of the radio business, so Shannyn has stepped a few numbers up the dial.

I’m not sure why the new station got the call letters it did, but I’d like to assure the practitioners of Zen Buddhism, that the new Fox affiliate has nothing to do with the ancient and fundamental practice of the Zen koan.  The koan consists of a story, dialogue, question, or statement, the meaning of which cannot be understood by rational thinking but may be accessible through intuition aided by the practice of Zen meditation. One of the more well-known koans is “what is the sound of one hand clapping?”

Whereas the KOAN is the not so ancient, but repetetive practice of sandwiching Shannyn Moore between a whole lotta wingnuttery. But that’s OK. She’s still on the air with the same show.  Now that we’ve settled that one, on to our next exercise:

What was your original face before your mother and father were born?

If that’s too much for you, you can settle on a nice round of applause for Shannyn’s new adventure. Feel free to use both hands.

Signal is much better today, and almost listenable at work. Still not good. Outside the hours of 11am-2pm, I’m not sure that it matters. Seems to be all Fox & friends on this new station. No Stephanie Miller. No Thom Hartmann. No Ed Schultz. Horrible. Won’t listen outside of Shannyn’s show.

    • St. Elias says:

      I agree. Same feelings here.

I so miss Stephanie when I head out for my morning workout early in the A.M. Now, tomorrow, it is Friday, and when I get out, no more “Brunch with Bernie” on Hartmann.

Life is not fair, so they say.

Label me as one pissed off S.O.B.

  2. Terise says:

I dialed her up yesterday…but the signal was terrible in my car. Had a hard time hearing anything, same with Alan Colmes last night.

Glad Shannyn is still with us and will always turn to her when I have the chance, but I think I will miss Stephanie Miller most of all :(.

Heck, I still miss Aaron, CC, and Alan Tesche.

  3. Millie says:

I cannot reach Shannyn from my home – retired too – so, now have no access to her except for Saturday on TV. Bummer! This move to FOX is a negative for her there is no doubt.

  4. GoI3ig says:

I tried to tune in to her show today as I drove about town. It was as if it was a 100 watt station. I could barely hear her, and when I drove past any power lines, it went to total static. I don’t know if this was only during her show, or all day long?

Perhaps I will give it another whirl tomorrow?

The previous posts are correct on their union assessment. APD and AST are full of conservatives who back the very candidates who stick it too them once they’re in office. I just don’t get it sometimes. Their hate for gays, poor, abortions, and minorities seem to trump their desire to make a good living.

How’s that Dan Sullivan thing working out for you?

    • Blooper says:

Yeah the new station definitely seems to be lower wattage. I wonder why they didn’t just leave the new station on the 1080 frequency which (at least to my ears) had a stronger output.

  5. AkLib says:

I’ve seen this coming for a long time; almost all the advertising was public service announcements instead of actual commercials. At least she found a new place to broadcast without missing any time. As I understand it someone on the station, which I had to assume was Moore, was paying for their radio time so they weren’t even paying for that time slot. This is a common practice in AM radio, the host pays for the slot and sells the time for themselves. The station was in financial trouble, and has never been the same since they got Kerry Kerrigan and ran off Selbig, the best they had. The emphasis on local programming was not something I supported because I preferred the national shows. Hopefully he will do well in her new endeavor and the t.v. show will go strong. I will just podcast shows like Hartmann, The Young Turks, Malloy, and the Majority Report which is back after years off, and might be the best show aside from Hartmann’s.

  6. St. Elias says:

I really can’t pick it up at home either. When in my truck, I have been able to. All right wing crap. The lunatic fringe rules the day. They have 100% of the AM dial wrapped up now.

This action sort of reminds me back when the Baltimore Colt owners snuck the team out of town during the dark of night as they didn’t have the guts to tell the populace they were moving the franchise to Indianapolis.

I shouldn’t pick on the IBEW hierarchy here, because they at least tried. Obviously KUDO, as a left wing media enterprise wasn’t paying its way.

I have a hunch though, this decision was made at the entreaty of a majority of IBEW members, who believe their union should not be involved in this sort of political activity. Like they are unaware that politicians across the country are the best, the best money can buy, that is. Antonin Scalia’s gang of four “Citizens United’ decision recently assured that the politicos will be paying even more homage to their corporate masters in the foreseeable future.

IBEW does indeed have its share of conservatives. You know why, give a Democrat a dollar and he becomes a Republican. Even then though, for this, the fattest union in the state, it would seem that the right wing overload on the airwaves would be cause for great concern. I constantly find myself in the position of defending organized labor, to those who believe unions are a detriment to the well being of America and an archaic relic of yesteryear.

Influential and intelligent individuals, like Ray Kreig here in Anchorage, have devoted considerable effort and money to the task of destroying unions, in particular, the IBEW. Furthermore, every single one of these right wing media talking heads, which I have heard, want to do the labor movement in. So, I can’t understand how come other unions didn’t monetarily participate in the KUDO effort. Unions are already on the endangered species list. This recent decision to close their radio station has just hastened their demise.

  7. Millie says:

I keep trying to get her – have switched between FM and AM at 1020 on the dial and do not hear Shannyn’s voice. Anyone else having the problem?

  8. Blooper says:

First off, I’m glad that Shannyn’s show is surviving albeit in a now harsh and alien environment (think of her show as the Mars rover). Having with the death of KUDO 1080 I do think this is a sad day for progressive talk radio in Anchorage as we basically are back to (almost) 100% right wing, conservative AM saturation.

KUDO was a nice breath of fresh air that got started riding the Air America wave in 2004. While it was constantly changing it always managed to nurture a spunky can-do attitude amongst its many local broadcast hosts which made it fun & interesting to listen to.

Besides Shannyn, some of my past favorite KUDO hosts were (drum roll please) Aaron Selbig who hosted ‘The Aaron Selbig Show’, C.C. who hosted ‘The Cutting Edge’, Jack Frost (who co-hosted a show with Aaron called ‘Frost & Fire’ which was like a conservative v. liberal themed show and of course the quirky yet interesting Joe Princiotta. And of course I always enjoyed hearing the late Anchorage Assemblyman Allan Tesche come on Aaron’s show to give his commentary.

Hopefully another truly progressive station will rise from the ashes that are now KUDO 1080 AM to continue the good fight. In the meantime I’ll hold my nose and wade into the conservative muck of 1020 to hear the beacon of light that is Shannyn’s show.

    • Blooper says:

Please excuse my typo in the first paragrah. I meant to say “Having said that, with the death of kUDO 1080 I do think this is a sad day for progressive talk…)

  9. Thx says:

Too bad they could not sell off KUDO in its entirety and keep all of the programming. The real loss is that there will no longer be progressive radio voice in Anchorage to counter the corporate media. Out of all the affiliate options, was it necessary to choose Fox? Do they not have a foothold in this market somewhere else. Did they offer a ton of cash, etc. to make this happen. Why would the IBEW hand their station off to such a douche bag network? Blech!

  10. rotonerd says:

Here is a nice site to listen to…. They also have an app to download for your iPhone / iTouch.

I hope Shannyn has a iTune I can download.

  11. GOSHRX says:

This is bad. Signal is bad at home, non existent at work. Fox “news” at the top of the hour. No Stephanie Miller show. Hope all is made better quickly.

  12. GoI3ig says:

This is a bummer. Ed Schultz, Mike Malloy, Thom Hartman. All my favorites will be gone. Even Glacier Pilot baseball in the summer. Drats!

  13. zyggy says:

I would if she’ll have the new stream that KUDO started using? Since the change I have not been able to listen to her. =(

    • lingonberry says:

I too have not been able to listen to Shannyn on KUDO for the past month or more. I would be happy to donate if we can find a radio station for Shannyn to buy!!!

  14. Susie Snowflake says:

This is totally distressing news. I’m glad that Shannyn will still be on the air, but everything else about this whole thing stinks! I’ll miss Thom Hartman, (and especially his Fridays with Senator Bernie Sanders), Ring of Fire on Saturdays, etc. And this new station is a FOX AFFILIATE!!! Fox is = hate and misinformation, and it’s hard to reconcile the thought of Shannyn affiliated with Fox now.
I hope this is only temporary until a totally progressive station can be a home to her show.

  15. seattlefan says:

Will there be a live stream on the intertubes?

  16. wendycrew says:

The tears of Joe Hill for 1080. Cheers for Shannyn.

  17. St. Elias says:

Well, that is so sad, KUDO gone. I just finished peeling my 1080 bumper sticker off. Sort of tuff thing to do at near zero F.

Besides scheduling our girl from Homer does anyone know what this KOAN programing is going to generally be like? Is it a mix of right and left? No website as far as I can find or determine. They just came into being 6 months ago out of a failed FM debacle or something.

What is going to happen to my “Thom Hartmann”, “Brunch with Bernie” on Friday, “Ring of Fire”, etc.? Does that mean we have to listen to FOX News radio (puke), on the hour, if we tune in to 1040?

There is a religious AM station at Glennallen, that has been around for decades. In recent years they have gotten off their once mainstream Christian program drift and gravitated almost exclusively into lunatic fringe programs, both politically extreme right whack job and fundamentalist religious zealot, stuff. They now have FOX news too.

This ain’t a good day. At least we still have 91.1

  18. Moose Pucky says:

Go Shannyn! Looking forward to the day when you and AKM start your own multi-media company.

  19. merrycricket says:

Phooey! Can’t share links from my cell phone. Look up the definition of koan. Fitting call letters for the station or the show is it not?

  20. Millie says:

I’ve listened to Shannyn since she started her radio show and have supported her opinions the majority of the time.

But, having to dial into a FOX radio station? That is going to be tough as I dislike FOX (both radio and TV) as much as I dislike Sarah Palin, et al. I’ve noticed that Shannyn has not been appearing on either Rachel or Keith’s shows or talking much about Palin (negatively). Is she going to be able to cover Palin (truthfully) by being on FOX radio?

This is going to be interesting as there is no doubt I’ll be making horrid facial expressions each time I have to move the dial to 1020. We’ll see how long I can handle it. Shannyn will be ‘increasing’ FOX ratings in Alaska? Yikes!!!

  21. AlaskaDisasta says:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/12/sarah-palin-haiti-visit

And now the Bimbo’s going on the world stage (with the ever-present Todd at her side – does he not work for a living?). How are the kids doing, btw?

    • Hope says:

      AlaskaDisasta,
Is she a moderate Republican? I read the latest Time piece, thought she was conservative?

    • Susie Snowflake says:

Todd used to work for an oil company, going up on the North Slope to work. When Sarah quit as governor to pursue her financial fortune, Todd quit his job to be her full-time side-kick.

  22. MonaLisa (inCT) says:

I’d say, off the top of my head, that the sound of one hand clapping sounds kinda ‘wooshy’, punctuated with creaky pops….

One of my earliest pseudonyms was ‘Ken Zoan’. I tend to get a lot of things mixed up, so it fit.

Best of luck Shannyn, we’ll be listening!

  23. Motorhead says:

So… the avid listeners will be called KOAN-heads? [ but not QUITE like El Rushbo’s “dittoheads”]

Way to go, Shannyn! Glad you will be staying on the air.

  24. Rosetta says:

I hope everything goes well… Love Shannyn’s show. Will there still be podcasts? Good luck!

  25. jimzmum says:

    Will there be a simulcast?

  26. Bob Benner says:

I’ll be reprogramming my car radio button. Thanks.
