Hey guys–haven’t been around much for a while, but I’m back now.

I think my all-time favorite Palin quotes this year come from Palin (mater) sadly commenting how on Levi was “capitalizing on his fifteen minutes of fame,” and how she just had to bite her tongue (the irony of her criticizing ANYONE for capitalizing on their fame nearly slew me, and then, of course, there was the whole tongue biting thing, when she airs her views on the subject comprehensively.

My second best is less a quote than a global irony. Palin (filia) makes big bucks going around talking about how premarital sex doesn’t pay. Because of course in her case, it does…it does…

A key chain recording of some of her more memorable phrases and in her very own voice. This is
one that I think will ebay well down the line but, in the meantime, it will freak the heck out of any
unsuspecting recipient and be the gift to be most talked about.

    And then there was this…..http://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Palin-Going-Vogue-Magnetic/dp/B003FKAQ42

I saw one of these at a local store the other day. Do you think I should get it for AKM? I didn’t see a paper bag to put over her head but there is a teapot. Maybe she could the teapot over her head….

  5. LoveMyDogs says:

Are you stuck wondering what to give that special someone for Christmas? I was surfing the web in the midst of a cough and cold medicine stupor, looking for SP dog toys (I would just love to see my babies rip her to shreds). No luck with dog toys (although they do have John McCain toys), but did I find the ultimate toys for the politically discerning amongst you:

    Check it out: http://theweek.com/article/index/208435/best-election-season-toys-mdash-and-other-political-oddities

Politico’s Arena talks about Palin’s warming to the “lamestream” media (how I wish they would not use that term). This is my favorite (by Marjorie Smith, former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives):

” When Sarah Palin spoke at the Republican national convention, the country and the media were captivated. Her appearance, (looks matter), her tone, her energy and her clever one liners excited Republicans, terrified Democrats, and entranced the media that welcomed a new face, a new focus, and a change from the same, boring, campaign speeches.

“It took a while before many realized that other than a spectacular marketing tool, Sarah Palin was hollow. The problem was not that she was a “hick from the sticks,” the problem was that she had no philosophical, historical or analytical understanding of the world that we live in.

“I’m thinking of Sam Ervin, the senator from North Carolina who described himself as a country lawyer. I don’t have a sense that the ‘elitist’ media considered him a hick from the sticks, nor so did they consider haberdasher Harry Truman, William Fulbright, Lyndon Johnson or many others the reader might choose to name. Whether or not they had formal education, whether or not they came from privileged families, men and women who were – or are – hicks from the sticks, have been leaders in shaping America. The 43rd president of the United States, with his Andover, Yale and Harvard education, positioned himself as a hick from the sticks for the very reason that such a base appeals to the electorate, and to the media.

“No, Sarah Palin is not criticized by the media because she is a hick. She is criticized because while she may be a shrewd self-marketer, the only thing she can sell other than herself is know-nothingism..”

    • Baker's Dozen says:

      Palin is hollow.
Yes. The ultimate chocolate bunny. Looks great, but highly processed inferior ingredients molded to hide a hollow core.

    • โ€œIt took a while before many realized that other than a spectacular marketing tool, Sarah Palin was hollow. The problem was not that she was a โ€œhick from the sticks,โ€ the problem was that she had no philosophical, historical or analytical understanding of the world that we live in.”

It took me less than a week. Something about her first appearance put me off. I didn’t know she had been in a beauty pageant but that was the impression I had – that she was all show and no substance. Apologies to any who were in beauty pageants, but that’s what I see when most of them get up to talk.

Other than that, I think the assessment of Sarah Palin is pretty spot on.

      • nswfm says:

I thought she was unqualified when I hear the NPR announcement in the car. Then I saw her intro by McCain and knew she was unqualified, plus pimping/parading her kids. Seriously, who gives a sh:t about your kids? YOU are the one we are voting or not voting for, not your family.

  11. Dagian says:

“Friendly gesture from a neighbor who is now on her meds, or just some way to try to keep poking her nose in my business?”

How about this–you don’t know, you don’t have to respond and you will wait and see what she does in the future.

In other words, it’s not that you don’t trust her intent, it’s that you have a LOT of experience with her BEHAVIOUR in the past.

  12. merrycricket says:

Good morning mudpups. I have to tell you about something that happened last night.

Some of you will remember my stories about my crazy neighbor across the street and her opinion of my flower bed in my yard. Back in October, there was an incident with her and her next door neighbor that resulted in her yanking a rake out of the hands of a 3 year old and the kids grandpa having to be restrained from hitting her. I was omewhat involved in that I picked up the 3 year old and his 2 year old cousin and got them out of harms way. So, my neighbor hasn’t said a word to me since then.

Since that time, I have painted the whole front of my house, including the front door and removed an old fence. I know it was making her crazy that she couldn’t come stick her npolse into my business.

So, last night around 9pm, too late for visiting in my opinion, I hear a knock on my door and the dogs goiing nuts. I was actually in my pj’s so I felt no need to jump up and answer. I did go down to see who/what it was and found something inside my side storm door. It was a bunch of flowers from the grocery that looked like they had been tossed out by the grocery store. Really they looked like they had frozen at some point. There was also a small stuffed bear and a card in with it. The card was signed by my crazy neighbor and said “This card reminds of our neighbor with the red door”. Neither the card or the bear looks new. So, what say you pups? Friendly gesture from a neighbor who is now on her meds, or just some way to try to keep poking her nose in my business?

    • beth says:

I’d say friendly gesture, merrycricket. I’d treat it as such, at any rate. If crazy neighbor had meant to be ugly, she probably wouldn’t have alerted you to her presence at your door…she’d just have dumped the flowers and run. If she meant it to be a snark, it’ll bug her that you didn’t take it that way — if she meant it as a peace offering, you’ll be working with her towards that end. She knows you love flowers; personally, I’d accept them (and the bear) as a ‘random act of kindness’ from her. I do believe I’d accept them in the spirit with which I would have given them…neighborly, even thoughtful (if not somewhat odd, on her part.) beth.

    • Baker's Dozen says:

Take it as a friendly gesture and return in kind. Make her some cookies, thank her generously. If it was her intention to be friendly, then you’re getting somewhere on the road to peace. If it wasn’t, it’s really hard to say, “Wait, I mean those flowers to be an insult.” I mean, if your put down fails, how do you admit it? And if she really does lash out, take the high road and say, “Well, irregardless of how you feel about me, I truly wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.” (don’t anger her by using “holidays.”)
It never hurts you to take the high road.

    • Take it as a friendly gesture, but don’t get too friendly with her. She sounds a tad too unstable to me. I don’t think I’d invite her in for coffee, but maybe you could have a chat in the front yard sometime – you know, in a neighborly sort of way.

      • merrycricket says:

Funny, that was the FIRST thing my parinoid ex bf turned friend said. AND I did!

    • leenie17 says:

I told you months ago that your flowers just had to make people smile. Maybe they worked their magic on her, as crazy as she may be! Flowers have some seriously powerful mojo!!!

      • merrycricket says:

Too bad they couldn’t have worked their mojo on her before she went after the 3 year old. She really was crazy that day. We had high wind warnings and she was raking leaves out of her yard and putting them in a pile in the yard of the next door neighbor who owns the tree the leaves came off of. She was even sweeping them out of the street! Then the wind would blow and the leaves would start marching across her lawn again.

        • leenie17 says:

Yikes! I had a neighbor across the street who was so crazy and scary that, as soon as I saw him, I would make myself scarce. He would walk out the front door and just start screaming at anyone who happened to be around or at nobody at all. Every couple of weeks fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, social workers or a combination of the above would show up at his house to answer a complaint or because his very elderly and ill mother hadn’t been heard from.

When his mother finally died he was unable to afford the house alone and sold it (I heard that it was almost unlivable inside). It’s been reallly quiet ever since!

I don’t think even flower mojo would have worked on him so maybe there’s hope for your crazy neighbor after all!

  13. London Bridges says:

A suggestion: Gather up like minded folks (Shannon, Grypen, Dennis Zaki, even Lisa and Syrin) and record the 12 Daze of Palin and put it on You Tooooobe. Then we’ll get it to go viral !

I was at the library yesterday and there among the “library’s picks” section of new releases was Ms. Palin’s latest book. I glanced around and saw that no one was looking at me and sheepishly opened the book to the pictures.

I don’t know why, but I got the feeling that these photos felt staged to me. They didn’t feel like they were all that candid, except maybe the pic of Todd and Trig, and maybe the one with Sarah and Todd on their Blackberries. I flipped through the rest of the book and read a few passages from the middle… which is where I generally decide if I want to read a book. Nothing I read compelled me to want to read more.

Replacing the book back on the shelf, I MAY have pushed it a little further back than necessary. But who’s to say? I’m sure someone will find the book and check it out. After all, I live in Phoenix and McCain was her running mate. Or was that the other way around?

  17. OMG says:

I saw this clip over at Gyrphen’s…it seems that Haitians are not terribly impressed with Palin’s visit:

  18. OMG says:

Will the media act like journalistic professions or easily manipulated fluff producers? Will Palin dictate how she is to be covered (in the way that Sharon Angle suggested: “we want the media to ask us what we want to answer…”)? Is Sarah about to win the media war…or will the media “man up” and do their job properly?

LOL. I hadn’t seen your 12 Days of Christmas. This has to go viral on the last day. I am certain that Huffpo would publish it in the Comedy section.

That poor bludgeoned fish is now immortalized in song. A few days ago I would’ve never guessed that I’d be singing , ” And a dead fish on my tee veeeee”, every morning while making tea.

Finished my holiday shopping yesterday with the final gift being a copy of “Alaska Far Away “. Even though I’m going to give it as a gift, I’m going to have to watch it myself before wrapping it up. Can’t wait to see it! http://www.AlaskaFarAway.com If you haven’t popped over there yet, go take a look at the site. Such great photos. It looks like a fantastic documentary.

We’re fluctuating between freezing and 70 degrees here in the high CA desert. Crazy!

  22. thatcrowwoman says:

but at least Bristle “stuck to her guns” and kept those costumes and dances modest, right? Right? Riii-iiiiight….

So yesterday is went below freezing here, and this afternoon it’s supposed to be 70-something degrees. Florida in December. Set my compass North!

Oh, well, winter break/Christmas vacation starts at 3:30 Friday afternoon. Off to the library to see if I can learn something today. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • BuffaloGal says:

Here in Buffalo it’s fluctuating between 3 and 25 degrees. We may even see sunshine today !

The snow continues and our white Christmas is locked in.
( At this rate, so is a white Easter! )

      • bubbles says:

        ahhhh dear Buffalo.

      • London Bridges says:

On a positive note about Buffalo: The Buffalo News has a section on its weather page that tracks (no pun intended) the number of sunny days, year to date, in Buffalo and compares it with Rochester, NY, Syracuse, NY, Orlando, FL and Phoenix, AZ, and, guess what? Buffalo was in 2nd place after Phoenix and way ahead of Orlando. (At least this was the stat in mid November.)

        • leenie17 says:

I can personally attest to the fact that Buffalo gets a lot more sunny days than Rochester!

On the other hand, despite Buffalo’s reputation for snow, Rochester usually leads the way in seasonal snowfall total, although I’m not sure that’s a GOOD thing! We usually come in second behind Syracuse in the annual Golden Snowball Award. If you get as much snow as we do, you might as well win something for it!

Hey BuffaloGal – it took me an hour and 40 minutes to get home from work on Tuesday afternoon. It’s usually a 14 mile/20 minute ride. I spent a good part of the trip moving sideways instead of forward! Dontcha just love winter in western NY??? ๐Ÿ™‚

          • BuffaloGal says:

LondonB – that really is one of the nice things about Buffalo. We do get quite a bit of sunshine. Even when the winters are tough, we generally have plenty of sun. ( of course it’s then reflecting off of the piles of snow and for a chunk of morning and at sunset, we are walking and driving blind!)

Leenie – I DO love winter in WNY! Drives us all crazy but toughens us up at the same time. And I’ll take the winter tundra and trudging ANYday over the 95 degree weeks we have been getting during our recent summers.

Twelve Days of Palin is getting stuck in my head. I keep finding myself whistling “12 Days” and I have to stop and choose a new song because it’s driving me crazy. But no matter how many times I start a new one, I find myself slipping back .

H/T to the Godfather trilogy :

And then ….. just when I think I am out …. It PULLS me back in !

    • jimzmum says:

It iced stormed on us last night. I am not amused. At all. The salt truck hasn’t attempted our hill, yet. Smart move. They will wait till daylight so they can see how many trees they can bounce from on their way down. Bless them, they always work so hard, and our hill is so awful. I filled the kerosene lamps, charged up my iPod, have plenty of firewood in, got Himself out of the house for the walk up the hill to where he parked his car last night, and am now cussing the flickering lights. All our wires to the house are buried, but it only takes one whack on a powerline somewhere to kill the power. All of us around here are used to it, but it is bothersome. Our friends in Key West are whining about the weather, too. The lizards are falling out of the trees again.

Have a nice almost vacation day!

      • leenie17 says:

“The lizards are falling out of the trees again.”

Now THAT’S something you never hear in the northeast! Too funny (although I’m sure it’s not too amusing for the poor lizards)!!

        • BuffaloGal says:

The “lizards falling out of the trees” got me too. What does that sound like ? What does that LOOK like ? If you’re wearing a hoodie and a booncha lizards fall out of the trees and in to your hood, – Can you be forgiven for running screaming through the streets and causing chaos?

Poor lizards. Do they fall like acorns? Can you scoop them up in bushels and help them find new homes?

So many “falling lizard ” questions …..

          • Bretta says:

            New Koan:

“What is the Sound of Florida-Chilled Lizards Falling out of Trees?”

            Thanks for the giggle!

      • Elizabeth says:

        Keep warm!!

    • merrycricket says:

I sure could use a winter break and 70 degrees. Hard to believe we have all this snow on the ground before January. We’ve been 20 below normal for most of the month.

      Is it spring yet!?!?

      • leenie17 says:

Here in Rochester we’re well on track to set a new record for the most snow in December. As of yesterday we were at 43.3 inches – 3+ inches away from the record of 46+ that was set in 2008 and we’re only halfway through the month with more snow predicted for next week.

And it’s not even winter yet!

    • Bretta says:

It’s only zero in Anchorage – but it’s a dry cold.

took my kids to the airport this morning – off to have Xmas with the grandparents in FL

    • Baker's Dozen says:

At least Bristol didn’t quit. From what I saw of her dancing that’s about all you can say about it, but she’s superior to her mom in that way.

      • Bretta says:

Nice thought – Good Job, Bristol, you are one up on your Mother!

      • Dagian says:

That’s true. BUT…she quickly ran back into the family fold with this one:

‘Amidst reports of robo-voting fans of her mother helping the challenged dancer stay in the game and very bad reviews of her performances week after week, the 20-year-old single mom told viewers that winning would be like โ€œa big middle finger to all the people out there who hate my mom and hate me.โ€’

I wonder if her mother would have barred her from the family compound if she hadn’t said something so gauche, ignorant and boorish.

  23. Attagirl says:
