Open Thread – Love One Another
Every year, I try to get a new ornament for the tree. This year, I was standing on line waiting to buy a special present and my eye fell on this one – the only one like it in a display of little gold balls. It spoke to me.
Merry Christmas, Mudflatters. Count your blessings, and be grateful for every one.
According to HuffPo, Miller just threw in the towel. Murkoski wins.

pick your 10 most intriguing people of 2010 from a slightly lousy list (no nancy pelosi, no harry reid, no elizabeth edwards etc). as of this writing the palinbots had not yet discovered the poll and ol’ sowah wasn’t even on the top 10! hehehe – how we really feel.
I hope all Mudpups had a wonderful Christmas. I had an awesome Christmas with my family. I looked around at the beaming faces of grandchildren, neices and nephews as they opened their gifts and felt all warm and fuzzy. I watched my grown children as they oohed and ahhed over their presents (to me, they were chidren again) and knew how blessed I/we were. I had started cooking on Thursday and as usual I put my soul into it. My children were eating the same traditional Christmas meal we always have, with maybe one new additional, but they grubbed and commented as if they were eating something new and unexpected. I marveled and thought how blessed we were/are. I thanked God for such blessings. My finances are diminished, but my heart soars. I had a very Merry Christmas and hope all Mudpups did too!!!
…..and in the last few minutes of Christmas, 2010 here in Alaska, prayers for all who are missing the warm messages and warmth around us that most of us have gotten to experience today…..
..May we be wise and caring as we approach the New Year.. Thank you, AKM for your intelligence and wonderful humor, may it carry you and encourage the rest of us in the days ahead..
Night all…
I know it’s after midnight here and for most of you, Christmas Day has been over even longer. But I still want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas.
Peace, Love, and Joy to all.
I have the window open, and I can smell the approaching snow!
Send some back West- it was 55 and sunny today
I like to leave my window opened to smell the fresh air/snow and then snuggle under my down-blanket, still, even since I was a child. Something about fresh air…..
I used to do stuff like that, until the Mrs. complained about the cold. Used to put small, square grass/hay bales around the house in Winter, The Landlords dog would lay on the top bales next to my bedroom window and soon She would start to moan softly and turn it in to a soft howl. Kinda Freaky. On nights with sub-zero temps it was great to hear the howling and have a comforter and a warm body to snuggle with.
Zyx, close the window!
“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish enough “Hello’s” to get you through the final “Good-bye..”
Merry Christmas everyone!
that’s wonderful Liberty L. thank you. honestly, if i shed one more tear this week the kids are going to take me to the booby hatch. the beautiful, heartfelt words and expressions of love over the past week have touched my very core; the core wherein resides the personality you know as Bubbles. i am forever changed. ready now for many more hellos or the final goodbye knowing that ‘whatever is is best’.
Merry Christmas to all… I’ve put on 5 lbs just reading about all the wonderful meals! Just me and the cats enjoying a quiet xmas here; wife & daughters in New Mexico with Grandma, as poor ole Dad has to work thru the holidays- Thankful to have a job, and medical benefits for the family; there will be plenty more Xmases to come, and wife’s mom needs the support.
It’s been an interesting year, to say the least, AKM’s blog has been wonderful to read, as have all the comments. Snos- the site’s new format has been GREAT ! Thank you for all your hard work on it. May you all have a Happy New Year and smooth sailing for the year to come.
ps- those Greek boys in Tarpon Springs all fight pretty hard under the water for that cross – makes the dirty tricks in water polo look like a sissy game !
Right you are, Ben!
Back home after a wonderful holiday dinner with my family. I have enjoyed reading the thoughtful and perceptive comments of everyone here for the past two years+. And I have learned a lot from you.
Just want to wish you all the best holiday season ever.
Hey, pups! Just made dinner. First, a salad of mesclun, radish, tomato, Kalamata olive, Spanish capers, red pepper, artichoke heart, avocado, and love, dressed in homemade Balsamic vinaigrette. Now, butternut squash ravioli and fresh-roasted chestnuts in sage “butter” (actually coconut oil and fresh sage), and peas cooked in spearmint tea instead of water. Enjoying myself.
Tomorrow, NYC is supposed to get a blizzard: 12-18″ of the sticky stuff. I’ve been waiting patiently, and it appears my patience has paid off.
Health and peace.
p.s. To the mudpup in the Forum who posted Portable North Pole, thanks so much! My sister just loved getting that message from Santa, and was really excited by it. Immediately, she & the bf set one up for his nephew.
The aforementioned mudpup in the forum was Memphis NY — thank you so much, Memphis!
Loving the dinners! Looked for butternut squash, but alas, no where to be found.
I love hearing about dinners and traditions… makes me want to eat and learn more.
My stepmom is Greek, and taught me many recipes; I always make spanakopita, no matter what else I serve. And koulourakia (yum).
Best wishes for a warm and peaceful season to mudpups everywhere-
Thanks to all of you wonderful people for your comments. So glad to be able to facilitate the amazing meeting of the minds that you are.
And also, happy holidays to Hushpuppies (lurkers) who are out there by the thousands. *waves to you*
Thank you all for journeying along through these crazy times with all of us here at The Mudflats. We appreciate you more than you know.

Love one another and cherish your loved ones and friends. Our time is precious. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays…..Best wishes for our upcoming and sure to be interesting New Year! Hugs to you all.
Thought this was an appropriate song for that ornament.

Merry Christmas everyone ~~
“Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself. ”
by Norman W. Brooks
Thank you for being here & keeping me sane!
Thank you and a very Merry Christmas to all connected to Mudflats.. we are very thankful for
many things..one being that Mudflats has always proven to give the readers…true journalism
on the important to all American citizens on important issues of the day. Keep up this excellent
standard in true journalism…some today seem to use words that do not actually apply but never
Mudflats. ie as one example..captivating..riverting S.Palin…well ..? more accurately shrill voiced
screaming Palin..anything for attention. Hopefully to the New Year will give political people like
McAdams at some point back again in political life..just the type of political person that is rare
today…and a real plus plus for places like Alaska..as well as the country.
Back from the usual amazing Christmas Eve family and friends dinner and equally amazing Christmas brunch. Four-ish inches of snow made the outdoors look incredible.
Great gifts that normal people get but also received: from one of my brothers, the “Sarah Palin WTF (Did she REALLY just say that?)” 2011 calendar and from a niece/god daughter the Sarah Palin key chain that includes 12 sayings in her own voice (eg. “Quit makin’ things up!” “In what respect, Charlie?”) and the “Sarah Palin magnetic dress-up Going Vogue Mix n’ Match Wardrobe.”
I guess I had no idea that my Sarah Palin Derangement Syndrom was so obvious to my loved ones. May have to work on that in the New Year.
Thanks to all for the information, safe haven, head bangery, compassion, humanity and humor that this site provides.
Peace.
I saw that calendar in a bookstore here in my crazy red corner of TX! And I saw the keychain thing at the local Urban Outfitters. My 5-yr-old desperately wanted it.
Peace. Love. Hope. And Many Happy Adventures to All!
Mery Christma! Happy Everything!
Merry Christmas, and God bless us – every one.
Tomorrow, I’ll post something from AlterNet for your edification. I’m taking a breather from SWWNBN today.

There are wonderful communities I find thru this keyboard of mine that I am so grateful for. Thru wires and gadgets and science they connect us all from all over the place. We commiserate, laugh, encourage, and listen to each other. What a gift! Thanks MudPups.
I wish each of you a peaceful day where ever you are.
Wishing Mudpuppies everywhere a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
May you remember and celebrate the warmth and love of the holidays (whatever holidays are important to you) all through the year!
Ran across this and remembered Jan Brewer from AZ and how she refused a transplant to someone.Don’t know if this family was or not but they truly got a gift from God. http://www.sheboyganpress.com/article/20101225/SHE0101/12250385/1062&located=rss

Merry Christmas AKM and mudpups everywhere!
Merry Christmas from Juneau! May all the wonderful mudpups across the US and around the world enjoy the day in the manner and custom they are used to. Thank you AKM for the wonderful community you gave to us and your beautiful ornament above.
Merry Christmas from Texas!
The presents are unwrapped, the turkey is in the oven, and I’ll have to shut down this computer to have the dining room table back in service today.
Our little one loved her microscope — didn’t even mention the pony she asked for and didn’t get. She told me last week that if there was a really big box under the tree that it was for her, that she’d asked Santa for a little horse to ride/sit on, but not a real one (thank goodness!).
Our daughter in uni is here w/her boyfriend. He’s Jewish, so wore a yarmulklaus, an adorable yarmulke that looks like a santa hat, my dentist gave it to me for him, she’s Jewish, so I’m operating under the assumption that it isn’t total sacrilege……..
I am enjoying Bruce Cockburn’s Christmas songs and relaxing now. I hope that you will all have a lovely relaxing day too.
Sending warmest wishes everyone’s way.
xxxooo
♥ to AKM and my mudpuppy family! Hugs to all. Big ones!
The tree has wrapped presents tucked under and Santa has filled our stockings; the love of my life and I wait for our two sons and new daughter to arrive… I’m in love with all that’s good in the world this morning. I am content. beth.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to the most delightful folks I have ever “met”….
We stand tall together–shoulder to shoulder across many miles.
I love you all. Peace, happiness and safe travels to all my friends.
Here are the lyrics to one of my old songs:
Not But Once A Year
He was just a newborn child
Brought into this world of woe.
Didn’t ask to come,
Don’t need wise men to tell us so.
“What shall we bring him?”
Said his friends and kin.
“Where shall we search for him?”
Said the people of the world.
The kings proclaimed the Word:
“This birth will save the world!”
But children need a place to play,
And live, and laugh, and grow.
The Father shed a tear
For his baby, newly born.
“Our child needs Love,
Our child needs Peace,
And Hope from this day on.”
Next time when you’re wondering
What to bring on your sojourn,
Spread some Love,
And brew some Peace,
And Hope from this day on!
And if you’re searching
Where to chart your star,
You need not travel distances,
Just start right where you are.
She was just a newborn child …

beautiful London B.wish we could hear you sing it.
LB-help me out. I hate to be the skunk at any one’s picnic, but this is Christmas and it is so commercialized ,I swear I’ll go crazy.Perhaps you ,or someone could pen a song to Celebrities and celebrity rags that I,mikefromiowa, does not appreciate hearing who got divorced,or ran off with someone else’s else. I want happy stuff. I realize that I’m not a kid anymore, but Holidays when you are lonely don’t need the blues to lighten up the mood. I’m sorry,I just had to say that.
Merry Christmas, Mudpups! Guess what? It is really coming down here – yes, snow on Christmas in GA. I heard this is the first time in 50-60 years! What magic!
Well, other folks have mentioned what they are preparing for Christmas dinner, and so here goes!
I was given some smoked Alaskan King Salmon, so I’m planning my meal around that. No standing rib, turkey or ham for me this year! Guess I’ll fix some scalloped potatoes to go with.
I’ve heard so much flak about saying “Happy Holidays” instead of Merry Christmas, that I just have to say how much folks are missing by not taking advantage of ALL the holidays!
December 6th is St. Nicholas Day, followed by St. Lucia, then Hanukkah, Christmas, Boxing Day,
Kwanzaa, and all the 12 days of Christmas right up until Epiphany. I grew up in a Greek community, where Epiphany was celebrated more than Christmas, and young men dove into the chilly waters of the bayou to retrieve the cross thrown by the Bishop. Then when I lived western AK, the native Orthodox community would carol door to door for all 12 days. Wonder if that is still done. Then we had the “Burning of the Greens”. So, CELEBRATE ALL THE HOLIDAYS, Mudpups!
My daughter gave me a Kindle for Christmas, so off I go to learn how to use it!
Would that be Tarpon Springs that you grew up in? My DH was born and raised and I enjoyed the festivities for a few years too. Now back in AK and enjoying real Christmas weather, but do miss the beautiful pageant and fun of Epiphany in Tarpon Springs.
Oh, Bear Woman – It WAS Tarpon Springs! Wasn’t it beautiful with the procession from St. Nicholas Cathedral to the bayou, with the Byzantine Choir? And the moment when the Dove of Peace was released? Then the scrambling for the cross, with all those handsome young men thrashing around in frigid water? Do you remember Kourabiethes? I made some for Christmas, then had to warn everyone I gave them to to pull out the whole clove at the top!
Good to hear from a kindred spirit!!!
In Hispanic communities, including the huge one in NYC, Epiphany is known as Three Kings Day. They parade through the streets, sing, and roast a pig.
All over Europe, that was traditionally the day one received presents. Leave hay in your shoes, and find it replaced with a gift, either from Odin, Sinterklaas, or the Baby Jesus.
And, on January 6th, it’s apparent that the light is returning after Solstice.
A white Christmas in GA, wow, enjoy. I’m not familiar with Epiphany – it sounds like a beautiful and fun tradition. (Are the young men in Greek lioncloths by any chance?) Learn something everyday, even on Christmas.
Chicago got a beautiful blanket of snow last night. I love when it snows during holidays. Merry Holidays.
Not in the time I was there — 1999-2005. Just normal 16-18 year old boys swimwear. I don’t think so in the 60s either when DH dove for the cross as well.
Tarpon Springs is the biggest Greek community in the US. There are now many northerners (I was one) who live there now, but the Greek traditions carry on. Epiphany is VERY important and the Greek Orthodox religion and provides a huge influx of people watching the pageant as they parade through town from the church to teh bayou. The young man who retrieves the cross is said to be blessed and will have good fortune in that year and years to come. There are frequently 20-30,000 that come to watch the Epiphany Day celebration. After the dive, there is food and Greek folk dancing in the park next to the bayou. It is a wonderful celebration!
Thank you for sharing. I will read up on this as Epiphany Day celebration really sounds wonderful. Maybe one day I can experience it myself. (20-30,000 people? that’s huge)
Tarpon Springs!
Lois Weber is my (almost-ex) husband’s aunt (his dad’s sister). He & our daughters are in Cape Coral right now!
Small World, Tarpon Springs is lovely – and I have been in the Greek Orthodox Church – in fact, I’ll go pick a sprig of Rosemary right now i honor. Or was it Basil?
PS – Lois Weber is the woman who turned her property into a nationally protected site (a US Park, if I remember?) for the Monarch Butterfly.
yep!! celebrating all the holidays and all the people who celebrate them.
Many blessings to you all. Today my need to clean out my closet is converging with a call for clothing for our local families who will be coming to my church today for a special holiday lunch with many presents for kids and new and good clothing for adults. Considering how much extra I have it is like the harmonic convergence to have these two events on the same day. Busy Santa-ing and what a great way to be ready for the New Year. Love to you all – !
(Turns out one of my new BFF’s from this group that can use things is – my size!! God works in mysterious ways.)
So ho ho ho and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

“Bourbon soaked cherries dipped in chocolate syrup “????? !!!! Oh, baby, shoot me now !
The cherries are a long-standing tradition for me from a recipe I found way back in the 70s in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so it’s a taste of “home for the holidays.” Packed 2 quarts of big ripe cherries in a Jack Daniels infused simple syrup this summer. They’ve been marinating in the back of the fridge since then. Drained them yesterday, saving that magically cherried bourbon elixir for smile-inducing cherry cokes or drenching pound cake. Dipped the cherries in melted chocolate, cooled on wax paper. About 3 of those will keep you grinning for awhile. I’ll post the recipe in the forums later if anyone’s interested.
I would love to have the recipe. I almost asked when talked about it last summer.
And, also too, I love cherry coke. Thank You and Merry Christmas.
ooooo! Thanks, they are in my recipe file now. I do other spirited fruits, so this one will definitely be added to the list.
and Bubbles on her way to eat all the da cherries. have a happy Crow
Watch your mailbox next month, Bubbles. Til then, here’s some Irish Cream. *clink*
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I love that a kitty-cat adopted your DH Happy. that made my Xmas.
Charlie the King of the Kitty Cats (Littlebird named him; who am I to argue?) is a welcome addition to the family. Our last cat, Gabby the Wonder-kitty, died in November at the ripe old age of 15, and it’s been kinda lonely without a furry friend.
Yesterday, a great blue heron was warming his toes on our chimney cap…had his eyes on the goldfish in my pond! Last time I checked, all four fish were still swimming; they’re only finger-sized, barely a heron mouthful, eh?
and a friend’s brother just brought us a rooster and six hens (not French hens, and not all a-laying in December), so it’s a crittery Christmas in the forest. Warms the cockles (cackles?) of my heart.
Love it – love animal stories.
I have one baby cockateil, two parakeets, five finches, and nine hens (no rooster).
Hens are from Triple D Hatchery (of sarah slaughter fame) last July – at least one has started laying already before the change of light (that amazes me – they aren’t due until February) and the other birds were all adopted from animal control.
I saw a blue heron on the creek at my Dad’s house in the month before he died – incredible bird. Dad kept his Siamese cat going for 17 years and was so sad when she died – the poor vet tried to explain to him that 17 was fantastic – a grand old age for that grand old lady – that he had done well.
Happy New Year!
Awww… you just warmed the cockles of my heart yet again.
Caw, caw caw… forever and again….
With every drifting wisp of breeze, travelin’ lil beetle trail..floating cloud bank and wisp of mealtime cooking..we are all..joined around this globe..health and joy all..and warm supportive hugs.
By the way, Juan Cole has the most original of postings on Christmas in the Middle East, and the home of St. Nicklaus on the south coast of Turkey, etc. http://www.juancole.com/
Thank you for posting the url I have added him to my check out daily (aka the when I can get to it these are first)bar. Great stuff to think about.
Merry Christmas to all the Mudpuppies. I hope today brings you joy and peace and a wonderful dinner, too.

Well I suppose I could grouse about the fact that the two lovesof my life are summarily preoccupied
Sorry about this. My fingers twitch for some reason and I didn’t finish my post. I was gonna say since Molly Ivins is in a far better place that here and Shania Twain is engaged,My Christmas wish lisT is deflated. Then I realize,I have many new friends here that I’ve neve met it would be prudent for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. now I can’t wait for the further adventures of Queen Quittybritches and her brood. Have the best ever Christmas and A Happier New Year.
Scarlett Johansson is back on the market.
Merry Christmas!
A friend and I were just discussing Molly Ivins yesterday. To have heard her take on the Tea Partiers…
I love Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan and Molly Ivins….Texans, all…I don’t think they would approve of the school-book nonsense…not at all.
Yes, it would be worth the read for sure.
Merry Christmas to all the pups. Thank you for all you have done for this country. Peace, joy, hope, and continued research skills!
So grateful to my mudpup friends. You mean so much to me, even found safe haven for my son in WDC. Love you more than any emoticon can say.
Merry Christmas ♥
Well it surely shines the light of the many Illuminating individual’s that are here on the flats. Here in the hamlet we raise an arm of toast to you my dear.
Simply Beautiful.
My heart is full of blessings.
Best wishes to you all and your loved ones.
Peace, Love and Freedom
merry christmas AKM, and to all mudpuppies everywhere. thank you for your blog.
Merry Christmas to all you Dear Mudpuppies! I’m having a wonderful, low keyed holiday with my kid Sis (3yrs younger) and Big Bro, vacationing from Phoenix and Colorado. Gotta wake up in the morning to just turn off the turkey bird (Sis makes the moistest & best tasting bird ever, slow cooked) and then I can go back to sleep in.
So I’m wishing you ALL have a fantastic and safe holiday!
