Open Thread – Fly On
Flyinureye at the Mudflats Art Department came up with this wonderful tribute to our dear friend Roger Ranch who passed away just a few days ago. I think he would have approved.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Flyinureye at the Mudflats Art Department came up with this wonderful tribute to our dear friend Roger Ranch who passed away just a few days ago. I think he would have approved.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
Roger was doing good work in Bethel when he was run off by morons with only their self promotion to gain. Bethel used to be a place where if you were able to accomplish the project that came your way, then more often than not that became your job.As has been noted, Roger was a very good fracture repairman, credentials be damned. Since yk became all modern and shit, Roger no longer fit in. The yk deltas loss.
This seems like a really cool way to volunteer for Alaskans and Washingtonians:

I have high hopes of finding a moment to do some volunteering through one of these sparked organizations.
You have to register to see the information?
I don’t know if you have to register, or should say at what point in the process you have to register…

It seems to be a great idea, volunteering based on interest/skillset — from home or not. I got directed to a fundraising effort and was very out of my element, so started over. However, if someone has skills + time, and wants to do some volunteering that’s very specific to their skills, it is a great tool, at least appears to be.
thank you!
Thank you – very sweet and nicely done. I am mourning the loss of one of our school nurses. She was an extraordinary artist and very caring. Her door was never closed and she took care of her students – and her staff. Catherine Doss Senungetuk – we miss her, too.
One of my dearest friends also left this world his past year. She wrote me once–with those exact words–when I needed a little cheer up with local Alaska politics.
Perfect tribute to clearly a mighty-fine man (that I never got to know until now) and to some other mighty fine folks who have waved their good-byes this past year.
Thanks a bunch, flyinureye.
Just for chuckles this fine Boxing Day, compare and contrast the following two family photos. They sure made me chuckle. (Meow!) beth.

Lovely, beautiful poster – tears in my eyes.
Wonder why only the good die young? (and I think Roger was still young – if not young at heart).
Not that I knew him – just of the nice stories written of him post-life – feel your loss and offer my condolences.
Oh, that’s wonderful. Absolutely perfect!
Here’s a great opinion piece, that illustrates Alan Grayson’s “the war is making you poor.”

From the article: “• The United States maintains troops at more than 560 bases and other sites abroad, many of them a legacy of a world war that ended 65 years ago. Do we fear that if we pull our bases from Germany, Russia might invade?
• The intelligence community is so vast that more people have “top secret” clearance than live in Washington, D.C.”
Stay safe, blizzard people!
Thank you for the great graphic, Fly. Perfect, from what I have learned the past few days.
It is the afternoon after everyone goes home around here. I am going to spend it trying to find the kitchen counters, and shoveling out the fridge.
The blizzard has started here. I have to go out shopping, but I love the snow, so I don’t mind at all. It’s going to be fun!
Safe travels to everyone who has to drive or fly in it. Be careful, and arrive at your destination.
Health and peace.
That’s an awesome photoshop… wait IS that photoshop, or is it…. Why YES it is! It’s Roger Claus! Perfection.
Getting ready for the blizzard here. It’s been snowing since noon. I don’t mind the snow at all, it’s the wind that scares me.
Blizzard hint- Fill the cat food so that they don’t start to eat you right away and give the rescuers time to ID you.
Flyinureye, this is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person. Thanks for creating it, and thanks to AKM for publishing it. I hope those who gathered for his tribute will tell us all about it.

Of course, you-know-who makes an appearance.
Fly, this is just fabulous !! With Bubs – laughter and tears.
I do love the last week of every year. Very special feel that comes from looking back, taking stock and getting ready to move forward – hopefully better and stronger.
Onward !
As I promised yesterday, here’s the link to Alternet’s crowning of $arah Payme as “misinformer of the year:”

Do watch the video.
“…His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
…And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow…”
forever in our hearts, and in the things we do to make our world a better place.

Fly!!!! I believe Bones is laughing this morning at this tribute from you. boy! did you get this one just right. i am laughing through tears here. i accompanied Slip to the tribute the other night though only Slip knew i was there and i think Roger would be well pleased. happy New Year dear Fly.
Hubby & I were there as well, but I couldn’t stay because we needed to be at an event for our youngest daughter at roughly the same time on the other side of town. I didn’t really know anyone, but I wanted to show respect for this wonderful, larger than life man of principles.
I was about to leave our card & angel candle on the bar, when in walks an old friend from 4th grade at Sand Lake Elementary, waaaay backin the day…….{{{{{Chris}}}}}} …(C.T.rox, btw)
He assured me he would pass on the card & candle to family of friends of Mr. Ranch.
Wonderful tribute Fly!
May Peace be with us all
Cxxxs Txxk who I knew at Dxxxxd High School (which means I may also know you)?
yep, yep.
I moved to Hawaii in 9th grade, but if you attended Mears, we may know each other.
i didn’t see this thread earlier so am repeating this here: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2010/12/specials/interactive.most.intriguing/index.html
pick your 10 most intriguing people of 2010 from a slightly lousy list (no nancy pelosi, no harry reid, no elizabeth edwards etc). as of this writing the palinbots had not yet discovered the poll and ol’ sowah wasn’t even on the top 10! hehehe – how we really feel.
Interesting poll. I certainly would have chosen some different people to put on the list. When I made my picks I refused to choose any of the tea party nuts. I won’t give them any more publicity than they’ve already stolen.
Yeah, it would have been nice if Elizabeth Warren had been one of the choices…
