Open Thread – Super Bowl

I asked Mudflatters, when the matchup became clear, who they’d be rooting for to win the Super Bowl. It looks like The Mudflats is a Green Bay crowd. The results were:

1) Green Bay Packers (55%)

2) Whatever (23%)

3) Pittsburgh Steelers (22%)

It’s a tough day to be a Steelers fan.  Being beaten by “whatever” is pretty harsh.

I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but I confess to a little soft spot for Pittsburgh, for two reasons.  One, the very first Mudstock I attended was in Pittsburgh during Netroots Nation 2009, and the amazing local contingency of Mudflatters welcomed Shannyn and I in style with our very own “terrible towels” emblazoned with the Steelers logo.

Also, my very first monetary wager was on a Steelers game. It was Superbowl X, and I was just a wee little thing. But I bet $5 on the Steelers – a competetive wager with our class’ resident sports wonk who said Dallas was going to trounce them. I won.

But all that aside, the thing I’m hoping for most is just a good game. May you all enjoy the Day of Cheese and Steel.

And Ariana just sold HP to AOL for a cool $315M. I wonder if any of those who’ve contributed to its success by writing articles, commenting, and/or referring readers to it, will get a cut? beth.

  2. StElias says:

Hey, I think the crooner did a pretty good job. What is the big deal if she missed the tried-and-true lyrics or not? She is a person who has demonstrated concern for others by reaching out, particularly to the poor and hurting. In this case, I believe she was sincerely patriotic.

Besides, I like her version better anyway. Tell me who it was that cast those words in stone and decreed there shalt not be any adjustment? In my opinion, most Americans believe it is the meaning that counts.

All this hyperbola over her so called scew up reminds me of the ageless “All in theFamily” T.V. show when Archie Bunker was stuck in a jammed elevator with a Puerto Rican and his pregnant wife. Archie was panicked because he had to get somewhere in a hurry. The Puerto Rican was also under stress because of his wife’s condition.

So, the Puerto Rican started singing our National Anthem. Archie yelled out “Stop-Stop”. The Puerto Rican stopped and asked what was wrong. Archie said, you can’t sing that here, it is reserved for patriotic occasions only, “ballgames and such”.

    • beth says:

I’ve always thought the Atlanta Braves had an unfair advantage — afterall, the opening song always ends with their name… 😉

I think you might be on to something, StElias; it isn’t ‘written in stone’…but by the same token, I don’t want to have to wonder what the singer is going to do with it. I don’t want to have to worry if they are going to hit the high note they’d planned on hitting; if they are going to drag it out into a 10-minute on-and-on droning; if they are going to get so caught up in their fancy that they forget the words. I want to be able to concentrate on the words and their meaning –as I sing along (either in my head, or quietly)– I don’t want to have to concentrate on where the singer is going with it. It’s an ‘ode’ to the flag, not to the land or her peoples; not a particularily pretty song, to my way of thinking. It’s way too war-ish and battle-ish, imho, but it’s our National Anthem, nonetheless, and I sure would like to have it treated –across the board– with respect. beth.

  3. Cassie Jeep says:

    Cheese!

  4. dreamgirl says:

    So who won?

  5. beth says:

There ought to be a law. Maybe even an amendment to the Constitution. Something!

It would be for ALL singers (and wannabe singers):

When you are asked to sing our National Anthem, no matter how specially you can trill and warble words, DON’T DO IT!

When you are asked to sing our National Anthem, no matter how long you can drag a word or phrase out, DON’T DO IT!

When you are asked to sing our National Anthem, no matter how cleverly you can ‘echo’ the end of a word 4-, 5-, 10-times, DON’T DO IT!

When you are asked to sing our National Anthem, no matter how well you can ‘reverb’ your voice without mechanical assistance, DON’T DO IT!

Bottom line (and what should be the LAW!): When you are asked to sing our National Anthem: stand up, sing it, and sit down!

I’m sorry, but I just get ticked when our National Anthem is treated as a ‘cover’ that the artist feels they can –and should– ‘take liberties’ with. I don’t care who they are, how talented they are, how well-known they are, how mega their recording deal is, or how fancy they can sing, it is *not* a showcase for personal theatrics — it is our National Anthem! Treat it as such. Respect it. Just stand up, sing it, and sit down. Arrrgh! beth.

    • NOLA says:

I completely agree, Beth. She flubbed it, too. I have heard some well-done renditions, but this is not the time to showcase talents, it is the time to honor our nation and do it well. We all know she can sing, she’s got a heckuva voice, and I could never do what she does, but I wish she’d have toned it down and gotten all the lines right.

      • beth says:

It’s not just her, though..and it’s not the flubbing… it’s the showboating! Every danged time! No matter *who * it is singing, if they showboat, they’ve pizzed me off for disrespecting the National Anthem. Remember how everyone got all up in a huff when Rosanne Barr missed a note or two and then *intentionally* made it worse and worse? Why is it no one says a thing about when ‘real’ singers play fast and loose with the tune, tempo, and dignity of it? Playing it for laughs or showboating — to me, it is the same thing. Enough, already! beth.

    • Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

      Amen!!!

    • leenie17 says:

I was watching the news and missed it but heard lots of complaints about her performance. I agree…it should be done with minimal personal styling, especially at an event like the Superbowl.

And get the dang words right!!!

  6. slipstream says:

Prediction: Okay, it is early in the first quarter, and already I can tell: the team with the yellow pants will win.

  7. Dagian says:

Regardless of the winner, may I say that BOTH of those dogs are good sports and ADORABLE? Thanks!

  8. sallyngarland,tx says:

An announcer on the local Dallas news had a cheesehead cowboy hat on today. Kind of funny.

  9. vyccan says:

Hi Everyone, hope you are enjoying your Sunday so far! I know absolutely NOTHING about football, other than that I think it shouldn’t be called ‘football’ as that name already identifies a sport that uses the foot. The way these guys play around with the ball in their hands and throw themselves on it and on each other, is more worthy of the name ‘soccer’ in MY opinion – just saying. 😉

What I really want to do is point you to an interesting read about the President’s actions re Egypt. Please, please take a moment and give it some attention. Given all the ‘wisdom’ the pundits etc have been throwing around on this subject, this article is worth considering.

I’ve got to root for the “Stillers”, too since Southwestern PA is where my roots are. But we never pronounced “Stillers” with the sort of vacuous accent Miss Quittypants uses.

Go PACK, Go!!! Bring the Lombardi Trophy back home where it belongs!!!

  12. leenie17 says:

I’m torn about today’s game because I don’t follow either team closely, don’t have any wagers on the outcome and don’t have any really strong feelings about who wins. Since the Steelers beat my hometown Jets, I’m leaning slightly in the direction of Green Bay. And I LOVE cheese so that’s another consideration!

Mostly, I just hope that it’s a good game, has some creative commercials in between, and gives me the opportunity to indulge in some good snacks and a special dinner.

Snacks and dinner…I’ve got my priorities straight! 🙂

    • Buffalogal says:

I’m with you, leenie. I hope it’s a good game that both sides can be proud of. I’d love to see it come right down to the wire.

The Packers have a player from Western New York so I’ll be rooting for him. Our local news folks have been interviewing his family all week and he seems like such a nice guy. I guess I’d like to see the Packers take it so we can see his Mom interviewed next week. She’s just bursting with pride.

Hey – our Mayor will be partying with POTUS this evening. He’s one of 100 guests that were invited. For the life of me I can’t figure out why he was chosen. Did they pull names out of a hat?? As far as I know , there’s no connection between them and, truth be told, our Mayor doesn’t have a particularly sparkling personality. I thought maybe POTUS had a thing for Buffalo wings but I guess Mayor Brown was told he couldn’t bring them because they are a security risk. That really cracked me up.

      Enjoy the game everyone!

  14. Trini says:

Illinois governor, Patrick Quinn and Wisconsin governor, Scott Walker, had a friendly wager. The loser of the Bears-Packers game would have to go to the other’s state to work in a food bank, wear the opposing team’s t-shirt and fly the opposing team’s flag in front of the governor’s office the day before the superbowl. I cheered for the Packers because I really wanted Quinn to do some work.

I will be cheering for the Packers again. I am making sweet potato fries (dusted with powdered sugar and dipped in honey mustard sauce) as my contribution. What treats are you making Pups?

  15. CanadianGuy25 says:

This i sgoing to be a great game in another recent line of great games. I still remember when Super Bowls would be 40 point blowouts. There seems to be no reaqson this one won’t go down to the wire.

Vegas says the line is 2.5 points, the closest in 10 years. Most of the early money is on Green Bay, but Pittsburgh has a great defence.

In the regular season, Green Bay won on a last-minute touchdown drive, but Pittsburgh did not have Troy Polamalu, the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year, in the lineup.

I am cheering for a great game.

  16. A Fan From Chicago says:

I’m cheeering for “Whatever.” Bear backers and Packer backers don’t exactly have a natural affinity. And I really don’t like the Steeler’s quarterback. I think he’s a low life. But I do like the team’s owners. They were Obama supporters before it became fashionable.

    • bubbles says:

after reading Lacy’s post above and your comment i am going to root for the Steelers. although i will probably be lost in a book during the game. i got a J.D. Robb mystery and i will be solving a lurid murder in the year 2052. so let the games begin! have fun pups.

I just receive this e-mail and can’t believe people would put out just CRAP!!!!!
Up until now, I really didn’t care who wins the big game today, as I am a Vikings fan. But after reading this—-I will be routing for the Steelers!!!!!

Every Red Blooded American should jump in line to support the Green Bay Packers! The Packers defeated the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon thus earning them the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl. By doing so, they saved the Hard-Working, Red Blooded, Taxpaying Americans literally several million dollars of tax money. How you say? Simple… we were told that if the Chicago Bears had won that President Obama (and probably his family) would be attending the Super Bowl to cheer on his hometown team. Since the Bears lost…the President won’t be attending. The money saved from not using Air Force 1, the limosines, all the additional security, and let’s not forget Michelle Obama’s entourage, is literally several million dollars! Therefore every American should cheer on the Green Bay Packers at the Super Bowl to show them our gratitude. Oh…and let’s not forget to thank Chicago Bear’s Quarterback Jay Cutler for his role in the Packer’s success! With that said…let’s circulate this email to everyone we know so they can understand why they should cheer for America’s team….the Green Bay Packers!

rightwingers and obama haters. pathetic sad mean people. i hope you replied to all with a nice little smackdown.

      • The nutters forget a few years ago our former, unelected Potus was stalked and attacked by a rogue pretzel and it put Bush down for the count, during a Super Bowl. The pretzel was extraordinarily rendered in an Eastern European nation, that shall remain nameless, and tortured severely. As per usual, the wrong suspected terrorist was tortured and Bush finished out his destruction of America under heavy Secret Service protection. No dollar amount was ever assigned to extra security for Bush. I heard pretzels were banned from all White House functions after that.

Gonna watch the game and root for the Steelers! Or “Stillers” as the locals say.

Spent 2 more days in bed, but woke up feeling rather chipper this morning. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and I’m getting ready to make the welsh rarebit for today’s game. Cheese, it’s good! 🙂

Born in Wisconsin, so I’m backing the Packers. Praise Cheeses!

Truth be told, I’m not really crazy about football, but I do love cheese and long for Wisconsin winters of yesteryear… and it opens up some good-natured kidding and conversations in the halls of my high school during class changes here in Florida, also, too…

I’ma take it easy today…a little cooking, a little reading on the swing in the sunshine by the pond, a little football and fun food…then early to bed for the week ahead.

Here’s to a lovely day, wherever it finds you.

  20. PollyinAK says:

A lot of born and raised in Alaska, Alaskans don’t come from a state with a football team. I think many have chosen Packers as the team to root for, as they are community owned, and often the underdog. And of course Vince Lombardi, an incredible coach and the inventor of the Packers Sweep, a strategy that won them over a dozen consecutive games when he was coach. When he was hired, the players were “nobodys”… Did you know Lombardi was a teacher at a Catholic school, and one of his aspirations was to become a priest? He was coach of the school football team, and his goal was perfection. He used his experience as teacher when he taught the Packers team the various complicated plays. He never let a player leave without having them ingrained. He stayed up all night watching reels of football games, and designed his legendary plays. I was surprised to read about the precision of some of the plays, like: “take nine strides, pivot to the right”, and each player had his sychronized move.

    • Millie says:

Totally agree with you! I watched the TV special on Vince Lombardi too and so enjoyed it.

I worked, at one time, for a national corporation (business development/sales side) and some of our training included Vince Lombardi inspired education. Loved it! Go Green Bay!

    • sali says:

I am from Green Bay, and was in high school during Lombardi’s hayday. During playing season he would haul all the players into the Cathedral to attend Mass and take communion IRRESPECTIVE of their own religion. The players knew better than to complain or protest, and many of the locals, even the church-goers, were disgusted with this show.

  21. Lacy Lady says:

I agree with everyone that Palin knows Nothing about Egypt!!!!! The last I heard Obama is the president of the United States of America!!! Not Egypt!!!!
our president is having to walk a fine line as to what he says in public.

  23. I can’t tell you which team will win the Super Bowl until someone explains to me what the Super Bowl does. I noticed yesterday that one former,half-guv of a large Northwestern American state has a birthday on the same day as my oldest Granddaughter and I want it stopped before some nutter decides to make it a Federal Holyday. Clover has a much nicer ring to it than Quitty. I hereby declare February 11th as National Clover(Chloe Elizabeth) Day. Here in Iowa at least. Sweetness,if you happen to see this, have an awesome 12th birthday. Your check is in the mail. Grampa Mac.

    • dreamgirl says:

Seconded! Perhaps you could trademark February 11th too and also. Clover Chloe Elizabeth is such a beautiful, sweet name.

Clover have an awesome 12th birthday!

    • BeeJay says:

My sympathies to your granddaughter, Mike! It’s my birthday too, and having to be associated in any way, shape, or form with Guv Quittypants really chaps my hide. Of course, knowing her, it’s probably not the actual date of her birth, as someone probably forgot to sign the birth certificate. 😉

My best birthday wishes to Chloe (“Clover”) Elizabeth on her day of days! May she live a long and happy life, where her dreams become true.

      • barbara says:

    • Irishgirl says:

She is being roasted for this. She clearly knows nothing about the situation in Egypt and diplomacy in general. That whole interview was just unmitigated gibberish. Even people who like her want her to shut up and stop the hatred and spitefulness. I’m really enjoying reading all the comments on the news sites – I have seen very few supporting her.

Mrs Todd Palin, you really need to sit down and STFU. You are way out of your depth lady.

      • Buffalogal says:

Agreed . The roasting is long overdue and well deserved. Hopefully it won’t be much longer before someone can make the official call of, ” Stick a fork in her. She be done!”

And while the roasting continues, let’s enjoy, shall we ? **** Passing along the bag of marshmallows ***

        http://blogs.cbn.com/thebrodyfile/archive/2011/02/05/exclusive-sarah-palin-interview-with-the-brody-file.aspx

As you note, the comments are 99% against Palin.

        • Irishgirl says:

          I particularly liked this one.

        • barbara says:

i couldn’t read through her comments, but will go back to read the comments. at CNN the comments were great. 99.9% anti you-know-who.
what’s really obvious to me is that President Obama could walk on water, effect a lasting peace throughout the middle east and everywhere else in the world, put 10 million people back to work making a living wage, cut taxes and end all war, and sowah (“joan of snark” to quote one of the comments at CNN) would still have nothing good to say about him. THAT is what she’s about: she doesn’t LIKE our president, and she doesn’t want anybody else to like him either.
immature, vindictive, nasty, nasty, stupid sowah.

      • jojobo1 says:

After reading the comments I agree she is being roasted as she should be.

The freeway was slightly slower than usual on Friday–because of the International Film Festival. There were various road closures–for the film festival. I think they had a couple of minor, dead end streets closed for the Reagan Ranch Center, which you can’t drive to from the main street, though they claim that for their mailing address.
And did you notice that they interviewed a lieutenant and an officer. No offense to them, but if Mrs. Todd Palin was that important, wouldn’t you hear from the Chief or at least a captain?
Her event may have created what could possibly be called a “rush minute” but certainly not rush hour traffic.
We’re way too used to “important” people coming to town and the police are way too used to dealing with those issues for anyone as minor as Mrs. Todd Palin to have caused a blip on the radar screen.

    • bubbles says:

it is about time. when i think of Palin sashaying around our military bases hawking her book and those soldiers just back from Iraq and their families grinning and posing with that fraud it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. i don’t think i will ever forget that.
