Open Thread – It’s a Rough Life
I managed to catch this shot of Buf the Dog catching a few Z’s in the midday sun today. When she heard my phone make the clicky picture-taking noise, she opened one eye, then closed it, and resumed her nap. Life is rough.
I’m SO jealous of Buf and my kindergarteners. Naps are wonderful things.
They used to be even better when they came after milk and cookies.
I need some Mudflats detective help. I was behind a silver Dodge Durango in Iowa City this morning. The vehicle had Illinois personalized {vanity} plates that said MUDPHUD. Could it have been a “Pup”?
Possibly, but the phrase generally refers to an “MD, PHd.”
It’s one of the toughest—if not THE toughest –degrees to get, in that the medical and doctorate degrees are earned simultaneously.
Only a small handful of each medical class earns this distinction.
The driver of the van was deservedly proud of that accomplishment.
When I was a kid, I used to sing “Hey, hey – Elmer Fudd, It’s a treat to stick your feet in the Mississippi mud.” Could it have been Elmer?
Hope you all listened to the “Ed Show” on Msnbc last night. He got it right. Showed clips of Bush saying that getting OBL was “not important”. And as for Dick C and his water boarding—-nothing came out of this. OBL has been living in this million dollar compound for what—-5 or 6 years or more—and they say they knew where he was? Give me a break.

You beat me too! Yep, she was a journalism major alrighty. If she was stumped, why didn’t she simply say Walter Cronkite? She also says that she wanted to be a sports caster so why couldn’t she name someone from sports? She is lame, no doubt about it.
Another thought…this was the Washington Corespondent’s dinner after party, which means the place was wall to wall journalists and she couldn’t remember even one name?
I’ve always been of the opinion that she could’ve easily rattled off a publication or three to answer the Couric question but the answers would’ve tipped off the world to exactly how uber extreme her world view is. Her deer in the headlights moment was her being caught off guard and trying to come up with an answer that would fly with the McCain camp. Oh, she indeed reads and has a few favorite journalists but it’s not info that she wants to float out there while there’s still a chance she may have to court any voters outside of the crazysphere.
I think on the journalist question she also knew she had to tread carefully because of her constant blathering about the lame stream media. You’d think she would’ve rehearsed a few neutral answers . She sure had to know she was going to get asked something along these lines.
She’s such a noodge.

Oh cr…p Bad day for Canada.
We just gave a majority to the bad guys, who have contempt for public health care and have pledged to reverse such laws as those permitting gay marriage.
It’s due to the liberals being stupid enough to trigger an election when they had no money, no policy statement, and a leader that was so unpopular that he lost his own seat and resigned today.
Canadian politics has about a 25 year pendulum. In the 90’s the Conservatives were down to only 2 seats in parliament. They recovered by converting to religious conservatism.

Hush, my dear Kate! I know how much it hurts. I’m consoling myself with the fact that by the time President O gets re-elected Harper will be almost halfway through his 4 years, and happily this will be his final stint! You and I just have to hope that the Liberals will have found a ‘leader’ by then, or that Layton grew into his role as opposition leader to the extent that he could be given a shot at P.M. My strategy will be to be so focused on President O’s great leadership I will be easily able to tune out Harper. I’ve already been doing that, so it won’t be a problem. As majority (a joke) leader Harper is bound to show more of his true colours – enough to definitively turn voters against the conservatives. [I hope.]

I sure could use some of that sun. Rain again and rain it shall be for days on end. Sigh…. I have the day off today which is a change. It’s usually on Wednesday. Blessing in disguise. Last night when I came home I found that one of my beloved parrots, Tripoli a blue and gold macaw, had died. It looks like he got stuck upside down and panicked. He was still stuck there when I came home with his back side pressed up against the corner of the cage and his feet/legs twisted in the bars. I am heartbroken at losing this beautiful ray of sunshine. Tripoli always cheered me up. I will need to bury him today and I don’t need this rain. I think i’ll go find a tree or shrub to plant over him in his honor. All my other critters are quiet today.

I think dogs have it all figured out. Our beagle girls take mid-morning naps and then after-lunch naps and then mid-aftermorning naps. In the evening they really sack out and even share the giant cushion (something they do not do during the day) with elaborate sighs and snores. In between they guard the house from squirrels and chipmunks and anyone walking by especially if accompanied by a dog, go for walks (on a leash of course), eat breakfast and dinner with a Milkbone for lunch and a treat for tea party time. Oh, and then there’s bedtime.
Oops, mid-afternoon naps!
I have one horse who always takes a nap at 10 am.
YEARS ago, after I had to rush him to Leesburg for an emergency colic surgery (is there any other kind?) I got a semi-frantic call two 36 hours afterwards. He was laying down, flat out, in his stall. I was able to reassure them that was a good thing. It was routine. Heart-stopping, but routine nevertheless.
Hard to believe it was 15 years ago and he’s 25 now. Don’t they know they’re not allowed to age? Only me?

Reminds me of my dog – Mac. (He is not my dog. I am his person.) He is here because some A$$wipe took him out to the woods and left him there. He has become my family’s love — and also all of the people that know us.
My son brought him home after a camping trip, because I was voted the mom least likely to send this dog to the pound. Now — he sleeps next to my bed and is my best friend. He has a great sense of humor, and has better table manners than most people.
These four-legged hairy guys are so wonderful to know.
