When I lived in Houston, TX (rather than six blocks from Houston Street, where I am now), there were only a few places in town that I liked. The most peaceful among them was a little concrete temple. On each wall was a Rothko, and in front of each painting was a bench. I was often the only person there, and it was a contemplative paradise (compared to the rest of Houston).

I prefer AKM’s lovely photo, but I do have fond memories of the peace and quiet in Rothko Chapel. For a look-see, visit http://www.rothkochapel.org but there’s nothing like being there, and admission is free.

New York City is — believe it or not — much more peaceful. Maybe because it’s not in Texas.

News: the Alaska Supreme Court ruled today that the vote about Pebble Mine will go to voters in Lake and and Peninsula Borough for October.

    http://www.adn.com/2011/08/17/2019818/supreme-court-allows-pebble-initiative.html.

    One for the good guys!

    • Zyxomma says:

Thank you, slipstream, for some excellent news. Now it’s up to every voter in L&P to get to the polls and DEFEAT Pebble, once and for all. Salmon, si. Minas, no!

      • Alaska Pi says:

If the initiative passes, be prepared for the bigger fight which will ensue.
There will be multiple challenges to it as regards state v local authority on land use planning as well a possible challenge from the state that the borough cannot have initial ( therefore final ) say on projects which could be said to be reserved for the state to have more authority under our state constitution per natural resources.

Thank you for the Alaska Rothko—gentle and gorgeous, ours in Arizona are breath-taking (and heart-melting), too.

    Beautiful!

Yahoo News is finally letting unflattering articles on SP through. Am I the only one who thinks that Fox did this Pappas thing knowing that Sarah would blow a gasket and let the chips fall where they may?

  6. The New York Times reports a study done by Robert D. Putnam-Professor of Public Policies at Harvard and David E. Campbell-Political Scientist at Notre Dame concluded that the Tea Party was less popular than Atheists or Muslims.

    • Baker's Dozen says:

I say, let’s replace the tea party congresspeoples with atheists and muslims!

  7. Waay Out West says:

Let me rephrase that. Your photo is much more to my taste, less hard edged.

  8. Waay Out West says:

I has to go look up Rothko too and I am underwhelmed. Your photo is much better.

  9. leenie17 says:

Okay, I like animals. Most animals. I don’t mind sharing my yard with them and I enjoy watching their antics. Most of the time.

But I’m getting pretty tired of being reminded that I’m apparently growing my produce for the sole purpose of feeding the local critters. I really don’t mind sharing a LITTLE of what comes out of my garden but it’s getting ridiculous.

My lettuce patch was nibbled to the nubs by rabbits this past spring and I have one lonely, anemic bean plant because two sowings of seedlings have been left looking like sad little umbrella frames sticking out of the ground. Since the only other 2 bean plants that survived were eaten last night, I expect the last one will be gone by tomorrow. No green beans this year. 🙁

I am growing three kinds of tomatoes this year: celebrity, roma and grape. Because of the flooding we got in the spring and the sweltering drought we had last month, all of my tomatoes are very late this year to begin with, and now I have some rather brazen and greedy little thieves in my yard.

I have not eaten ONE SINGLE tomato yet this year. I’ve been watching them change from green to orange, drooling in anticipation for the first fruits to turn red but, somehow, there never seem to be any ripe ones. Yesterday I found out why. Something has been stealing all the red ones, eating them and being cheeky enough to leave the slightly chewed remains in places I’m sure to find them. I know the chipmunks have been after my grape tomatoes because I’ve seen them munching and the plants are directly in their favorite path along the back of the house. However, I found part of a used roma tomato in the grass yesterday and can’t figure out who the culprit might be.

The tomato was bigger than the chipmunks, and no doubt twice the weight, so I know it’s not them. I have a rabbit that visits my yard every day but it’s only a baby about 6 or 7 inches long so I don’t think it’s strong enough to haul the tomato (that was almost as big as he is) up over the foot-high fence and across the yard. I haven’t seen any adult rabbits in the yard for several weeks and have never seen squirrels eating tomatoes before.

    I’m stumped, I’m hungry and I’m cranky! 🙁

    • bubbles says:

      ROTFLMAO!! oh my.

    • Buffalogal says:

I say you need to snag the maters when they are orange, put them in a paper bag and let the ripen in the house. It’s your only hope.

And if you wake in the morning to find the bag empty and bits of veggie left behind on the floor, well then you certainly DO have a problem !

    • slipstream says:

      It’s probably Brian.

      • leenie17 says:

I was thinking that myself. He IS a crafty little devil!

I’ll have to look for mooseprints among the tomato plants.

        • benlomond2 says:

I’m dealing with deer again…tomatoes are safe ( for the moment) but have had to pull all my pears early, and the only plums left are the ones they can’t reach whilst standing up on their hind legs….. don’t know if I have enough to make my plum wine this year, may have to settle for plum jam..

          • fishingmamma says:

            May I suggest plum cordial…

pour a large amount of good vodka over 4 – 6 fresh ripe plums. Add some sugar. store in a safe place for several months, stirring gently once in a while.

Remove the plums, cut them up and serve over ice cream, but not to the kids.

pour the cordial in a pretty glass and enjoy.

          • I heard the name Ben Lomond mentioned in a story from Utah about young girls getting e-coli from campground water.Might have been the campground ot river name. You are gonna be famous someday.

    • Baker's Dozen says:

I’m having trouble with birds stealing my tomatoes. Dang blasted birds–and I love birds. My grandfather was an oologist–keeping picking them. Watch your crows and mocking birds. They may be boosting them over the fence. You may have to get a net.

So, OK — knowing how intellectually agile and spry DMs (darling mudpups) are, I thought I’d toss out a poser for them to decipher…

Right off the top of your head: Who, or what, would an “Audience Development Manager” be? [Hint: it is a title.]

When I finally figured out what it was referring to, I guffawed at its absurdity. Any DM want to hazzard a guess as to what an “Audience Development Manager” might be? beth.

    • I cheated and looked it up and still am not sure. BTW did you happen to look up the Grotto of the Redemption on your computer?

      • beth says:

We used to get two local newspapers – one from the town we live in and one from the nearest ‘large’ town. We dropped the subscription to the second because .. well, just because.

In any event, we received a letter from them asking if we were sure we didn’t want to continue our subscription — it came to us signed by the “Audience Development Manager”! Say what? Really; an Audience Development Manager? Seriously?

I’m still trying to wrap my mind around how a newspaper‘s Circulation Department morphed into an Audience Development Department. Talk about whackiness on a grandly circulating scale! Oy!

Yup – sure did check out the Grotto of the Redemption [ https://themudflats.net/2011/08/14/open-thread-brian-2/#comment-273815 ] I do believe it does the memory of Antoni Gaudí right proud! beth.

Love the photo. And Yes—looks like a watercolor.
I am knitting an afghan for a bridal shower which is to be held in Sept. it is called “impressionist”. It has many colors which blend from one color to another like a watercolor.(blues and greens). the afghan is framed with a border of flowers. Hope the couple will enjoy it, as much as I have knitting it.

    • The farmer that owned the winner of the “big bull” contest said that Quitty drew a crowd in the ag building, but a crowd that was just as big came to see the big boy. Take that you snivelling ex-guv quitter reject. No one commented on which crowd had the bigger BS.

Beautiful!! The sky’s have been beautiful here too in Northern NY. Yesterday bright cerulean blue with the white puffy towering clouds. last night was so cool, had to turn off the window fan.
We have had those Aug. rains, really heavy, that somehow change the feeling of summer. We still have hot days, but the nights are cool.
I love Fall, but I will miss summer. I dread winter!

  14. I see that some morally superior rethugs in Ohio want to install a basement bar in the capitol so they can relax and high five their friends for screwing the poor and elderly. Not all are in favor of a bar since lots of children visit the building. Of course you could indoctrinate younguns in alchol abuse at an early age and they wouldn’t have so many problems to cope with when they reach puberty. The public would be allowed to reserve space and probably bribe pols with liquor.

    • John says:

I think it is a good idea, actually. The lobbyists buying them drinks will all be in one place where people can keep an eye on them and know who is bribing who. 🙂

    • Baker's Dozen says:

      Can you drink ethanol?

Well, of course you CAN drink it, but would one survive the experience in an intact state?

      • Possibly. According to Wiki, adding a few % of ethanol to water sharply reduces surface tension of water. It used to have the same affect on Mikey. Also according to Wiki,in the 18th century a liquor such as rum was added to gunpowder and if the gunpowder still burned,it was considered 100 degrees proof that the liquor was good. That is where “proof” for alcohol comes from. To make ethanol undrinkable for most, scientists add stuff like benzene or bitter agents to make it less palatable.

        • Baker's Dozen says:

Well, then, I think that those Iowan Republicans should open a bar with Iowa’s drink of choice (Ethanol is good for Iowa. The rest of the country gets lemonade.) Anything that reduces tension in politics is a good idea.

Mixed drinks, I hear, can be popular. A little benzene, a few sour patch kids, red food coloring, and little umbrellas with Sarah and Michelle pinups painted on them should keep them so occupied they won’t notice that instead of R’s taking the country back, the Progressives are taking the country forward.

Good morning. I will be working closing shift today, so I have the morning off. The weather is fabulous! We go into liquidation mode on Friday and I am told that the next two weeks will be like black Friday every day. There was a right last night between two adult sisters right out on their front porch. These two women have three toddlers between them who were near by when the fight started. It took six man to pull them apart. I took one of them to rhw hospital to get looked at. One the way, I gave her some unsolicited advice about the effect her behaviour is having on her kids. I doubt it will change anything but I got it off my chest.

    • Best get a black and white referee’s shirt and a whistle so they can’t legally smack you around. Throw a yellow flag at them for un-sportsmanlike conduct and make them hit the showers and call it a day. Oh and mind your topknot in case they come hunting your scalp. No offense.

  16. Alaska Pi says:

    AKM-
Thank you for introducing me to Rothko. I went and poked around some on the tubes and found images of some of his work. I will have to go and look some more. 🙂
I met Morris Graves in the early 1970s through a friend of a friend of the family kind of thing. Astonishing man. His birds almost make me cry.
So, for you and all here who widen my horizons every day :
Spirit Bird and Goose and Gander …

This latest wet, wet, windy storm here in Southeast was preceded by a magical day of sun and warmth and a long sunset/twilight with THAT smell I wish I knew how to describe.
That smell of damp earth warmed in the day ,cooling towards evening, a hint of evergreens under the glittery tang of water full of oxygen from it’s tumble out of the mountains… that smell. I love that smell. Whatever it really is.

  17. thatcrowwoman says:

    Good morning, all.
School is off to a pretty good start, but I’m not there today.

DH Happy is having wisdom teeth pulled today, and he’s a nervous wreck, bless his heart. The surgeon will knock him out, put him under…such reassuring terms, eh? I’ve stocked up on protein shakes, yogurt, chocolate ice cream (his favorite), instant mashed potatoes (my sister swears by the Idahoan brand…we’ll see) and jars of gravy. I have 2 bags of frozen peas and 2 bags of frozen corn to use as ice packs….

Littlbird and Spider Man are coming in this afternoon, and they’ll keep an eye on Happy while I go to work tomorrow. They go back to college this weekend, but I’ll gather lots of hugs while they’re here.

Reassuring, calming, healing thought and/or prayers will be much appreciated if you are so inclined. We should be back home in less than 4 hours, “resting comfortably in no apparent distress.” (That’s one of my mama-the-retired-nurse’s favorite chart notations.) 🙂

    OK. Here we go.

    L’Shalom,
    thatcrowwoman

    • Alaska Pi says:

      ((( TCW’s DH ! )))

    • tigerwine says:

Hugs from the vineyard to DH!! If he is losing his wisdom teeth, does that means he loses his smarts as well?

    • merrycricket says:

Prayers to Mr. Happy. It’s so nice to see he has loved ones to help keep him company.

    • leenie17 says:

Happy, healing thoughts to DH Happy and comforting, patient thoughts to his nurse!

For future reference, you can buy wonderful reusable ice packs in most stores’ first aid sections. You keep them in the freezer all the time and they stay cold for quite a while. They’re covered with a cloth material so they don’t sweat like regular bags of ice (or vegetables) and they’re always handy. I used to suffer terribly with migraines and have a bad knee so I always keep one or two in the freezer.

    • thatcrowwoman says:

Home already, and Happy did great.
He’s still a bit disoriented, groggy, and restless, but he’s had his meds. He insisted on “checking on the chickens,” so I turned him loose out back for a few minutes.

Now I’m going to round him up, get him situated on the sofa with his ice pack, and hide his shoes! 🙂 I think we’ll have an Indiana Jones movie marathon. That should distract him, eh?

Thanks for your support and suggestions. I love the mudflats and the denizens hereof.

Oh, look, here he is, back on his own.

      later,
      thatcrowwoman

      • I’m gonna pull a Willard Romney and wait until the dust settles to chime in. Does your significant other look like a chipmunk with cheek pouches stuffed full of nuts? I’m glad you got him home safely and get some more time with LittleBird and friend. I get Florida sunshine next Wednesday and he will be an adopted Iowayan until October 5th. Have fun in school and learn lots of neat stuff.

      • Zyxomma says:

Try playing your 528 Hz fork for him. He’s in my thoughts and prayers, and so are you. Hugs to all of you (even the chickens, if you’re so inclined).

  18. ks sunflower says:

AKM, beautiful photograph, but what’s even more beautiful is reading a blog authored by someone who knows who Rothko is and who can identify similarities between a sunset and his work. It just reinforces our trust and appreciation of you. (Plus, it makes us all feel a bit smarter for having the good taste to be one of your readers. 🙂 )

  19. Albert Lewis says:

Wife and I stayed at Kantishna Roadhouse a couple of weeks ago. She hiked, I fished for grayling (catch and release). Beautiful, although the 6 1/2 hour ride in from the park entrance was tough.

Didn’t see a sky as gorgeous as the one pictured; ours were grey and cloudy, although Mt. Denali did reveal itself the last evening. We were 30 miles away from it, even after driving 91 miles into the park at 15 mph. Still, it *was impressive. Huge. Big. Enormous. Stunning.

Alaska’s great. I’m up there every year from my poky Western Massachusetts, which ain’t all bad itself.

  20. GoI3ig says:

The sunsets have been awesome the last couple of nights. Mt. Susitna and Mt. Mckinley have both looked stunning.

It’s been a decent August so far, but fall is just around the corner. Enjoy it while you can. (for you Alaskan Mudpups)
