Open Thread – Palin 2012: Drop Dead +5 (UPDATED)

With so much going on in the world these days, it can be difficult to keep track of information. Even critical information on which our mental health and the fate of the world depends can slip through the cracks sometimes. For instance, even the most Die Hard Palinbots seem to have forgotten that the woman leading the charge of the ambitious albeit incompetent and delusional forces of the Tea Party has missed her own self-imposed deadline.

Sarah Palin said that the end of September was to be her “drop dead date” in terms of her decision to enter, or not to enter the presidential race in 2012. So, I thought it might be helpful if we kept track. Way up on the 6th floor of Mudflats Central one can find the underused, but revered Math Department. Those folks have all the equipment necessary to track this important event, and how many days have passed.

For those familiar with the abacus, you will notice that our Drop Dead Count-up (It’s not really a countdown any more) has been marked at 5 days.

Never fear. Our bespectacled Math Department has been waiting for such a time as this, when their unique skills were called upon to aid the community in time of crisis, and they are on this like a raven on a french fry.

UPDATE:

We’ve done it , folks! The crushing pressure from the Mudflats’ Math Department and the power of the mighty abacus have forced a decision. Palin has announced that she will not seek the presidency in 2012. See new thread. She’s outta there, folks!

I came to Mudflats three years ago to get real news about Sarah Palin (sent here via Andrew Sullivan). I’ve stayed because of the community and the other great posts, but also to get the very best SP insights. How does this news affect the mudflats? Have you given any thought to this AKM?

  2. Lacy Lady says:

She will be out on the stage with the Rep nominee with Hank W Jr. , charging big money to speak in their behalf. We have not seen the last of her. UGH!

  3. Ah, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief. Will she really go away? I think not. She’ll find some way to try to re-insert herself into the news cycle. We can hope that most of them have wised up and will just not replay her comments, tweets or offerings on facebook.

  4. Irishgirl says:

    From the link above.

    “October 5, 2011
    Wasilla, Alaska
After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States. As always, my family comes first and obviously Todd and I put great consideration into family life before making this decision. When we serve, we devote ourselves to God, family and country. My decision maintains this order.”

The bots are in hysterics and some of them are sounding more than a little disgruntled. πŸ™‚

To the people who said they knew Sarah Palin wasn’t running:

You we’re right. She played everybody for the money. Good bye cruel world.”

  5. Irishgirl says:

    SHE IS NOT RUNNING!!!!

  6. GoI3ig says:

The GOP has re-branded itself with an awkward position. In order to win a GOP primary, you have to appeal to extreme whack jobs and the religious right. The problem that presents, is winning a general election.

McNasty went all “right wing” during the primary in 2008. He made a huge departure from his long record of moderate voting in the Senate. Sure, it won him a seat at the table, and then he got his ass handed to him.

The same thing will happen in 2012. One of the wing nuts will prevail for the GOP, and then the independent voters will send him (or her) packing in November. It’s a fine line trying to act “conservative” without looking clinically crazy at the same time. So far, Bachman and Santorum have failed. Perry has just about blown it. Romney is probably the only one who can dance the jig, and that disappoints the hard core republicans.

Herman Cain is the GOP’s attempt to gain some street cred with the minority voters. I don’t think the ruse is going to work. He’ll be another footnote like Alan Keyes.

You can’t get this kind of entertainment just anywhere. The GOP primary season is popcorn follies for sure.

  7. AKMuckraker says:

I think the pressure from the Mudflats’ Math Department and the mighty abacus has worked, folks. See new thread. She is not running.

  8. QED says:

Hmmmm… Whether or not Palin decides to run or not, we are left with a slate full of losers–all falling over themselves to be the most extreme on this issue or that…. Hell–the Republican Party is desperate to find someone to run who looks even remotely electable – hence all the flutter over Chris Christie. I can’t for the life of me envision any of them as POTUS. Palin would just be one more turd on the pile.

  9. leenie17 says:

At this point, I don’t care if she runs or not, as long as she just GOES AWAY!!!

I suspect she’s paying far more attention lately to her money people than the lawyers who are making those ‘anonymous’ phone calls to the primary states. She’s balancing the money she might make as a failed Presidential candidate on speaking tour (questionable since the offers for those lucrative speaking engagements seem to be rapidly dwindling and everyone’s already heard the speech she gives…over and over and over again) against the money she would continue to make from Faux.

The variables that none of us know are these:
    1. How much longer can she expect to continue at Faux? The bloom seems to be off the rose and her appearances seem to be fewer and further between. For Ailes to publicly admit that he only hired her because she was ‘hot’ clearly demonstrates that he thinks little of her intellect or political expertise. SInce she is quickly losing whatever physical appeal she may have had, her television ‘pundint’ career may be coming to an end much sooner than anyone expects. If that’s true, she may not have as much to lose by temporarily throwing her bumpit in the ring.

    2. How much money is currently in SarahPAC and how quickly are the new donations coming in? If there’s a substantial amount in the coffers that she would lose control over, and the donations are pouring in every time she hints at a run, she may just string this along as long as she can and then blame anything other than her complete incompetence and stoopidity as a reason for not running. Once she declares, she can no longer use that money for whatever selfish expense she wants and all of her financial records are open to scrutiny.

As it always does with the Quitter Queen, it all comes down to $$$$$$.

  10. OMG says:

A must read interview of Nicole Wallace about her new book that used Palin as the model for her VP candidate:

“When you were working on the McCain campaign, what about Sarah Palin alarmed you so much?

“Well, first let me just say that the novel is by no means meant to build a case against Sarah Palin. However, to the extent that the people around [the fictional vice president] Tara watched in this troubled state of confusion, despair and helplessness as she flailed around β€” that was something I experienced. Palin vacillated between extraordinary highs on the campaign stage β€” she ignited more enthusiasm than our side had seen at any other point β€” to debilitating lows. She was often withdrawn, uncommunicative and incapable of performing even the most basic tasks required of her job as McCain’s running mate.

“The decision to relocate debate prep from the campaign trail, which is where McCain did his prep, to Sedona, was to isolate her and help her overcome the shock of becoming an overnight celebrity. There certainly were discussions β€” not for long because of the arc the campaign took β€” but certainly there were discussions about whether, if they were to win, it would be appropriate for her to be sworn in.

“certainly there were discussions about whether, if they were to win, it would be appropriate for her to be sworn in”

Wow…that’s the first I’ve ever heard of that and quite an indictment of Palin. I am glad that they finally seemed to realize what a potential disaster it would be to have Palin anywhere near the Presidency.

Of course, I will NEVER forgive the McCain campaign for making that a possibility in the first place or for creating the hateful political monster we’ve been subjected to ever since.

  11. AK Raven says:

She wants to keep this going as long as possible so the money from hopeful fans will keep flowing into her personal PAC. Wasn’t there a recent plea that went like this “send in your money now, $arah wants to know if she will have support should she run”. Yes, send in your money to her. That way it won’t go to a Repub candidate who really will run.

  12. Irishgirl says:

I’m surprised Ailes didn’t praise her scintillating intellect. My heart bleeds for her. πŸ˜‰

  13. EatWildFish says:

I can’t wait to see the next ‘interview’ with $arah by her BFF Greta Van Softball.

Will Greta ask $arah to react to Ailes’ comment? Likely not, because although the Quitter is contractually obliged to make a weekly appearance on FOX, $he is the one who dictates what can/cannot be asked. … Also too: It has been three weeks or more since $arah has come out of hiding and made a post on twitter or fb.

Hmmmmm …. methinks it must suck to be $arah ’bout now.

  14. Forty Watt says:

I well maybe be confused – nothing new – but I have a question for the Math Department: shouldn’t the Heaven beads all be up, at least in the configuration of 5 you are using?

Not that it matters one bit to the post. I’m just interested. I would have represented 5 by lowering one Heaven bead on the right side (value 5), but my Math Department was long ago and far away.

I don’t expect she’s going to announce tomorrow so I’m happy to hang about and see what 6 looks like. πŸ™‚

    • Forty Watt says:

I just read Mike’s post above. Well! If I’d realized they were Snackwells, that would have changed everything.

In that case, I think you should have eaten the bottom one of the top two on the right side – or any or all of them….. πŸ˜€

  15. mikefromiowa says:

That’s an abacus? Bless your heart,I’d swear you took all the Snackwell cookies left in existence and skewered them so I couldn’t enjoy pigging out on the low-fat little beauties. They really do look like my favorite chocolate Snackwells. You guys are teasing me,aren’t you?

  16. Elsie says:

    Roger Ailes:
“I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings,” he declares.

There ya go. Now that the bloom is LONG PAST being off that rose, and even her Sea of Pee minions have begun to see they are being played for the fools they are, she’ll be out the back door of the Fox Poop Network, sooner than later. Especially if she continues to snipe back at the negative comments finally being expressed about her by a growing number of conservatives who not only see her for what she is, but can speak up now without retribution and openly criticize her for being the narcissistic “maroon” that she actually is.

    • thatcrowwoman says:

juneaudream, that sounds like a job for Victoria (she of Secret fame).
We could maybe substitute ashes-of-flaming-pants for kohl and call it eye-liner.
      πŸ™‚

      So the “maver-ICKY”
      –and I DO mean ICKY–
      one
is still dithering while ignoring her self-proclaimed drop-dead date?
icky poo, as Grandma Shorty, of blessed memory, would say.

Get thee to rehab, Mr$. Todd Palin.
      Thin ice.
      Icebergs.
You’re walking a mighty fine line, there, and your balance seems off, just sayin.’

Then go home to any of ’em, all of ’em, and take care of yourself and your family.

      Oy!
If $he spent half as much time on behalf of special needs children
(or any number of worthy causes) as $he spends stuck in junior high…
the world could be a very different place. Meh.

Brian and I are off to Orlando this evening (by way of Atlanta, oy, vey) for the state school librarians’ 39th annual conference. We’ll be home before sunset on Friday as that’s the beginning of Yom Kippur. I’ll be incommunicado until Sunday, but it’s all good, eh?

I’m a bit nervous about airports and changing planes, as I don’t fly much…
except in my dreams, and then I have my own wings and no machines are involved…

but I will be strong and brave.
and Brian brings all that good mudpup love along.
      also. too.

…hmmmm…i was thinkin’ of brian with lipstick,,,and with a bra he really might distract from the “quitter/grifter”…we hope…lol..oh, and pleeeze, don’t encourage her to expose herself…that will happen later when she has lost the msm’s attention…….

  18. Baker's Dozen says:

If you can’t adhere to your own drop dead date for making decisions, how could you make a decision as President?
Oh, that’s right. It’s easier. You just push the red button.

@Simple MInd…we must have posted simultaneously! Let’s see if we get any company. Otherwise, break out the cards and pretzels and let’s have play Go Fish!

It was a very belated Open Thread today… So we’re running about 9 hours behind in terms of comments. Fear not… Mudflatters will come. πŸ™‚

  21. puffin shrapnel palin says:

What? I’m the first and possibly the only one to comment on this thread? Guess that’s a pretty good gauge of Mudflatters’ interest in the candidacy of Governor HalfQuit!

  22. Simple Mind says:

Sorry. Had to put up a quote from the latest “the earth is flat” folks over at Conservatives4Palin. This nugget is by commentator Abie Rubin on C4P, explaining that Mrs. Palin is simply holding back her announcement to run sort of like we all keep birthday presents a surprise. “As for those who believe, or pretend to believe, that [Mrs. Palin]’s avoiding a decision due to her lust for fame and money, where and when have they seen her receive either of the two? If she would truly seek fame she would’ve joined Hollywood or some similar venue a long time ago … ” Ummmm…where do you begin?

    • Oh, my. Seems like Abie needs a new pair of glasses. Fox, reality show (maybe that’s not Hollywood enough for her), books (granted, the last apparently didn’t do so well). Now we know why those folks keep supporting the grifter – they can’t really see what she is doing or they are willing to turn a blind eye to the things they do see and call them something else. Wow.

      • I read through most of that drivel, well, as much as I could take to get the flavor of it. But I think this is my favorite comment – didn’t read all of them:

From Jonathan: Funny, was thinking today about Palin’s use of silence. It’s unnerving in the midst of a political campaign!!- which is all talk!! But it feels new & artistic. It goes along with her unusual use of language. In a book about Virginia Woolf, a critic notes: “Talk is often associated with men,” as “women’s silence, on the other hand, is marked as ‘absence’.”

It feels “artistic”? LOL, and “her unusual use of language” – well, at least he acknowledges that she doesn’t use English in any way that makes sense to the rest of us. And I’m not quite sure I follow his point on the Virginia Woolf quote. Maybe we aren’t supposed to understand that particular bit of “artistry”.

I left a comment. I’m sure it will stir up all kinds of angry responses or it will be deleted. I don’t plan to go back to watch them froth at the mouth.

    • Moles says:

My favorite from C4P is still: “Don’t worry, the ole moose hunter knows what she’s doin'”.

    • silverball says:

…wasn’t she the “flake”….prior to “quitter” and “grifter” that spoke an awful lot about obama being a celebrity???….”where do you begin?”… is right…….
