This cartoon is part true. I was making around 30 grand a year and my bank offered me a loan for up to 400,000. I knew I couldn’t afford that big of a payment. I ended up walking away. Later down the road I ended up with a much smaller loan on a much smaller house. Yes people were enticed by the banks but many people out there made poor choices.

  2. Moose Pucky says:

And Alaska Airlines profits dropped 37% last month due to bad hedge fund bets (see Wall Street Journal), then raised their rates and blamed it on other things. No Alaska media covered this!!!

    • Kath the Scrappy says:

Oh, maybe that’s why that lady was so adamant today at BofA when I tried to pay off & close my AK Airlines credit card. It frankly seemed a bit over the top, I found it almost insulting.

Ok, so today I headed to BoA to close that AK Air Visa card. Bk Mgr was helpful but he had to call someone to give the balance so I could write the check to close it. That lady on speaker phone was not going to give it up.

She kept saying I must not know, that I use this card frequently, she would waive the $75 fee, I do a LOT of business with that card, (& repeatedly!) that she just had to “make sure” that I knew what I was doing. I kept doing the “broken record routine” saying “I just want to close this card”. Over and over, and then I finally simply snapped & yelled it at the speaker phone. Bk Mgr looked surprised, but he could tell that I was getting frustrated. @ 60 yrs old, I’m still plenty able to make my own decisions!

Sending out best wishes and stay-safe! to all Alaskan neighbors in the path of big incoming storm. Not liking to hear it is forecast to be an historic storm in intensity and knowing sea ice is scant and so not there to help buffer effects.

Please note new e-mail address. Yahoo censored my apostrophies for the last time.

    Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!

Colorado became the first state in the Union to approve women’s suffrage in a popular (general) election on November 7, 1893.

    • mike from iowa says:

I’m not sure women suffering is all that much to be celebrating, especially with the women haters so prevalent and so willing to do away wiith hard won rights for the fairer sex.

  6. Lacy Lady says:

Sounds like Cain has woman #4 coming out today accusing him if improper ??????!!!
Gloria Aldridge is her atty. There will be a press release this afternoon. What I heard on WHO (Des Moines) is that the woman herself will speak. But I could be wrong–maybe it will be her Atty.
Me thinks Herman had best start packing his bags—–the bases are loaded.

    • bubbles says:

      ruh roh.
Merciful Mithras! the lady in question is no Anita Hill. let’s just say that old Herm is probably calling the Fruit of Islam for protection against a lynch mob as we speak. no doubt a mob made up of his wife’s relatives and church members.
i truly wouldn’t want to be a fly on his wall tonight. or any night.
the combination of hubris and karma is truly amazing. hey Herbie! the ancestors have spoken you are on your own. except for your brothers the Kochs of course.
      ROTFLMAO also too.

  7. OMG says:

Health care will be gone…DADT will be reinstated, or worse…a woman’s right to chose will be history…mandatory religious practices may not be far behind…another war will likely be fought, or many more…the rich will pay even lower taxes…unburdened by regulations, Wall Street might create an even worse financial meltdown…the rights of workers will be a memory…..

All of this can happen if we do nothing; all this will happen if the GOP gains more control.

Take a look at this video and pass it along:

PZ Myers has a disturbing essay today –

    http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/11/07/being-a-woman-on-the-internet/

It reminded me of a recent digby column, “Female Trouble”, which contains this great quote:

“My favorite all time comment has to be the fellow who complained, ‘You wrote a lot better before you came out as a woman.'”

Myers points out that foul misognyistic abuse is not confined to stereotypical right-wing knuckle-draggers clad in wife-beaters.

    Hmmmmm….

  9. mike from iowa says:

Discussion on Yahoo news today about how Cain is twice as Black as Obama and is a good conservative Black-according to rwnj sweetie Coulter-the bomb thrower. Last head count I got is there are exactly two(2) black conservatives in Congress and zero(0) in the senate. They must be better because they barely exist and only one has made any noise at all-Allen West and he is a certified whacko, rabid rwnj period, end of sentence.

There was a nice group of people at 10th and L street yesterday waiving Obama signs. One year until his reelection.

Hey, if corporations are people, why doesn’t Kim Kardashian marry one? You never see one of them get married. I got this strange idea from the latest Borowitz Report. http://www.borowitzreport.com/
    Have a good day.

    • mike from iowa says:

they would have to sign pre-nuptial agreements and sooner or later the extent of and how they obtained their fortunes would become public knowledge. They don’t like to share anything.

  13. tigerwine says:

Done like you’ve never seen before. This video from the small Yupiq Eskimo Village of Quinhagak, Alaska , was a school computer project intended for the other Yupik villages in the area. Much to the villagers’ shock, over a half million people have viewed it. For your turn to view, Click: HERE

Quinhagak is about 28 miles downriver from Bethel, where I lived. Got a lump in my throat when I saw that Lower Kuskokwim School District school bus! One like it hauled my kids to school. One started kindergarter the year after his older brother graduated from high school. Poor family planning – or lack of.

    • tigerwine says:

The lilnk isn’t going to work – go to you tube and search “Quinhagak” You’ll love this!

      • Baker's Dozen says:

        Which one? Lots come up.

        • tigerwine says:

Sorry – it’s the one with the “Halleluiah Chorus”!

          • juneaudream says:

That video..going..far further..than intended..was a true gift..to all..and I mean the world around. The innovation, the ‘message’, the time to talk it over, arrange the various backdorps, shooting, editing..was a joyous ‘happening’..for them..and for most of us. Since I have..spirituality..but not..religion..it touched me deeply. I think a god, any number of gods or goddesses..would ..lean-toward..a viewing of that loving gift of ..celebration..eyes glowing with joy..at the message..given. When it finished..they would..lean back..and smile..at each other..knowing many..have understood…The Deeper Message.

          • beth says:

I must need bottle juneaudream’s above words of “The Deeper Message” to keep close at hand for when the going gets rough. Thank you, juneaudream; the words put my heart at ease and make it content. ♥ @ you. beth.

          • Baker's Dozen says:

            Whoa. What fun

          • jimzmum says:

Wow! Wow! Wow! You have made my day. Thank you.

    • Carol says:

I really like that video, watched it multiple times – except it was done by the village and school teacher, which grinds my jaw because he misused an apostrophe to pluralize. Urgh! Still love the video.

    • Kath the Scrappy says:

Oh that was fun and FANTASTIC! Emailed to every friend & family I have. Frankly, it is more closely approaching 1 million viewers now. What a treat!!!

  14. mike from iowa says:

I bought any number of houses to live in in my dreams when I was young and dumb. Right now I don’t own a house, can’t afford a downpayment-even if dd supplied the downpayment,I can’t afford rent and heat where I live because of insurance to cover healthcare. On the other hand,I’m reasonably upper middle-aged,still have some teeth, still don’t much care for hard-core rwnj(and I’m surrounded by them),still waiting on back and hip surgery, still not going anywhere literally or figuratively. So why do I feel positively giddy about whining on the Mudflats?

    • juneaudream says:

“positively giddy about whining on the mudflats”..it’s because..it is the old time version..of the 1910 community store..with a wood fired . potbelly stove..with upturned old barrels..and a repaired kitchen chair or two..surrounding it, a cracker barrel..full and avail. to all who gather and an ever simmering pot o coffee to keep us..charged-up. We warm ourselves..be exchanging the news..from our various acreages-of-space..and then..comparing..the directions..various chamges..are happening..and how..they will impact us, you, them..and our kids..and their kids. So.”‘giddy” ?..what a wonderful word for..what the Mudflats experience..creates..for us all.

How is the Upper Mojave Desert not leading the way with solar power?
Actually, we discovered that putting in a solar field was going to require a tremendous amount of our limited water supply to run it. Not sure how that works, but when the numbers were published, we had quite an uprising against it.

    • mike from iowa says:

I’m surprised rwnj haven’t blamed Florida residents for living in a hurricane prone area as one of the stoopid choices libs make and then expect government to bail them out. Only the wealthy and greedy deserve to be bailed out. That is right wing gospel.

  17. Ripley in CT says:

I bought my house in 2002, and could afford it then. I have retained it, working my tail off to do so. Many things have changed in my life, and that is what makes it hard; unemployment through no fault of my own has made me consider selling my home, but I just can’t make myself do it. So, I work 3 PT jobs now and am grateful for it. Others might not have my same ability, impetus, or resources to keep themselves afloat. The banks did wrong by a lot of people. My bank didn’t, but I also chose something that wasn’t perfect. I do a lot of the work myself. I do know people who bought houses they had no business buying by lying to the bank about income. If they don’t check, they are abetting the fraud perpetrated by the buyers, too. I don’t know the answer, but it seems there are multiple layers to this issue. The big banks suck, for sure. I encourage everyone to keep their own money in a locally owned bank. I always have. The People are Too Big to Fail. The banks are at our mercy. Let’s make a difference.

  19. GoI3ig says:

The class divide is widening. Perhaps this American middle class experiment has just about played itself out? It’s hard to imagine the “Leave to Beaver” utopia where a family could exist on a single income.

Remember back when they made things in America? Now, one of the few products made in the United States are foreign cars.

In today’s world, you had better be a wall street executive, or a professional athlete (minus basketball) or you may find that you’re not that well off.
