Open Thread – Chinese Christmas

An actual sign in the window of a Chinese restaurant in New York City.  Gave me a nice chuckle.

Love the sign! Reminds me of when Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagen was doing her hearings prior to confirmation. Up until then I had no idea this was common practice:

“She even made senators crack up in laughter several times.

When Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) brought up the Christmas Day underwear bomber, she offered a lawyerly remark about giving terrorists legal rights.

“No, I just asked you where you were at on Christmas,” Graham said.

“You know, like all Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant,” Kagan replied, bringing down the house.”

In our community, many Jewish congregants used to volunteer to substitute for their Christian counterparts in businesses that will allow it where the Christians might be forced to work on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I worked for a time as a secretary to a Cantor in a reform congregation, and this charitable volunteering to free-up others to celebrate their religious holy day was encouraged – not mandated, but highly encouraged.

I do not belong to any organized religion, but I was highly impressed by this interfaith gesture of support and respect. I hope it still an active project and happens elsewhere. Thing is, the temples did not publicize this as charity is not to be flaunted (at least in the congregation where I worked).

BTW, I like the sign and the humorous but real gratitude it expresses.

What a wonderful idea and a great way to show respect and caring for someone of another faith!

(I hope the Christians returned the favor on the important Jewish holidays.)

      • Leenie, that’s just what I was thinking. It’s such a nice thing to do for someone so they can celebrate or observe their holiday without the stress of having to take a vacation day or to work when they’d rather be with family on an important day.

Not quite the same, but my cousin used to volunteer to work on Christmas Day when he was single so all the guys with families could have the day off. Of course, it wasn’t hard duty – the factory had the day off and all he had to do was go in for an hour or two – then he got holiday pay for the whole day.

I like the spirit and sentiment of the sign and the idea of working for someone else just because it’s a nice thing to do a lot better.

  5. I love this. My Jewish best friend told me Christmas is her family’s favorite day of the year because they go to the movies and then out for dinner and they pretty much have the place to themselves.

Turkey chow mein? That’s our Boxing Day dish.
I keep wondering if the Uminak people got fuel in before the big storm and whether it drove ice up the rivers.

Does the Chinese Rest.Association have an official Chinese Hermain Cain lurking in their closet?

Ha ha, good one! I know of at least one non-Jewish family that has Chinese food on Christmas – mine! Our family gathers at my Dad’s house for a big Christmas Eve feast (Lithuanian tradition). On Christmas day it’s just my husband, son and myself – we open gifts, have a quiet and relaxing day, and order takeout.
