Spotted at the supermarket. Ho ho ho?!
When my nephew was about 4, my BIL shot a deer and hung it in the garage to do whatever it is that you do with freshly killed deer. My nephew saw it and, being several days before Christmas, promptly became hysterical because Daddy had shot Santa’s reindeer.
My sister had to explain to him, once she got him to stop sobbing, that it was okay because it was a ‘plain’ deer, not a reindeer. Fortunately for my sister, Santa made an appearance at the house a few nights later so all was well!
If there are any NJ mudpups around, have you seen the gone-viral map of your state created by a Rutgers research assistant?

Reindeer!
I love the meat.
Mom and auntie will tell you, that as youngins, they ate thier pets. Yuppers, grandma had moms pet reindeer dragged to the porch, post mortum, of course. She skinned, butchered and hung the thing in the porch. Mom always said it was the best reindeer she ever ate. No jokes.
Funny thing about mom. She practically ran from jello and hated the smell of Koolaid, powdered milk and cheese.
Me, I don’t want to know how the deer died. I would prefer any reindeer brought into the house be ready for the stew pot.
tallimat… chuckle,, you sound similar to wife,,, I go fishing, bring back trout… BUT ,, I have to clean them where she can’t see the process, AND wrap them in plastic wrap so it looks like it came from the store….. go figure 🙂
OK, this is for sure Alaska style. I made the mistake of sending some great sausage of this type to my family with kids. Thank heavens they were old enouhg to not freak:-)
DId not do it again, although they have eaten without an issue, we just tell them it is caribou 🙂
ah, caribou
the classic Alaskan evasion 🙂
My sister sends me reindeer meat. She marks it “Rudolph Meat”. My hubby won’t go near it. Won’t even put it in the freezer. I don’t mind. It leaves more for me…
Bernie Sanders proposed an amendment to the constitution to overturn Citizens United:
The Saving American Democracy Amendment states:
Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people.
Corporations are subject to regulation by the people.
Corporations may not make campaign contributions.
Congress and states have the power to regulate campaign finances.
“There comes a time when an issue is so important that the only way to address it is by a constitutional amendment,” Sanders said. He had previously described the Citizen United ruling as “basically insane. Nobody that I know thinks that Exxon Mobil is a person,” Sanders said in November.
Sanders is accompanied in his endeavor to restore fiscal sanity to the political system by Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), who has introduced a companion measure in the U.S. House.
Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Michael Bennet of (D-CO) have also introduced a similar constitutional amendment that would essentially defeat Citizens United by granting Congress and the states the authority to regulate the campaign finance system. Udall and Bennet hope that by emphasizing states’ rights, they’ll gain the support of a few Republicans.

I very much admire Bernie Sanders and wish I could vote him in to every political office imaginable. The problem lies in the Senate just because rethugs have more than enough votes to filibuster the entire world, and that is what they plan to do. As they were mumbling yesterday, they are willing to commit political suicide on the payroll tax extension now in order to reap more political gains in the future. They are traitors and should be dealt with as such.
I agree completely and have been saying so at every opportunity. Putting partisan politics ahead of the American people is an act of treason – or it should be. And the ridiculous 60-vote rule that the Republicans implemented when they were in power while Clinton was president is just plain unconstitutional. But then, traitors don’t care much about that “piece of paper.” Isn’t that what George W. Bush called the Constitution that he had sworn to uphold?
Overturning Citizens United is the the only hope we have of restoring balance between the corporations and the real citizens of this nation.
Until then, the politicians will work for the wealthy and not for those who elected them to office. They will continue to legislate for the benefit of their corporate supporters, not for We the People.
And the rest of us will pay for it – in higher taxes, unemployment, pollution, loss of services and crumbling infrastructure.

Open thread and I can’t sleep.
The funeral is today.
A week ago, a sixteen year old stepped out of his door and asked some folks down the street to please hold it down. 2:30 in the morning. Folks are trying to sleep, resting up for school and work.
BLAM!
One shot.
Hit our young brother in the chest.
He crawled from the street to his doorstep
where he died.
No Reset button.
Guns & People Kill People.
No Reset button.
The 25 year old shooter is in jail
but that’s cold comfort for now.
No Reset button.
The funeral is today.
I dreamed mycrowself
weary and heavy-hearted
wings wrapped around littleman.
All my Relations.
Then we were flying

stars twinkling all around
and
the dolphin and the jolly mon…
Littleman shines among the stars now.
Thank you all for sending so much Brian love our way.
We’ll all find our own ways to keep love alive,
to keep our little lights shining.
This one is for Littleman,
and for all of our children.

All I can think of is hugs for the so many that are hurting now, those who have hurt like this in the past, and all those that WILL hurt if we do not look at this issue seriously.
Know there are many standing along side you today and the many days to come.
I am of the whacky opinion that we, our society of ‘adults’, *have* to begin letting our wee chickadees whale at each other, again; not doing so keeps them from learning at an early age one of life’s most valuable lessons: S**t like that hurts!
We have become so dadgummed PC when it comes to physical and verbal attacks that we’ve completely removed the opportunity for our chickadees to find out — for theirselves! — what the heck we’re talking about and why such behaviour is a no-no. When 7-yo Susie clobbers 7-yo Tommy with a styrofoam block or 4-yo James kicks 5-yo Jana in the shins, we ‘adults’ immediately jump in … why? I say: *let* Tommy clobber Susie back, *let* Jana shin-kick James back! They are not going to seriously hurt each other (they don’t have the physical/proportional strength), but the ‘instigator’ will find out that what they’ve done to the other kid does hurt: the proof of that is in the return of the ‘favor’.
And if 3-yo Greg calls 3-yo George a “doodie-head”, why do we immediately jump in and tell Greg that what he’s said to George isn’t nice — why not back off and let George call Greg a “poopie-head” in return? Without ‘adult’ intervention, Greg will soon enough learn that calling names is hurtful…because George will come right back at him with a hurtful; ol’ Greg will figure out how much it hurts to be called names. Either that, or the two of them will dissolve into best-buddy giggles over the ‘forbidden’ words they are using. Without ‘adults’ butting in, it’s a win-win.
While I’m not advocating allowing one kid to take a baseball bat to another or letting them smack another with a foot-long metal toy fire engine, to my way of thinking, things will rarely (if ever) get that far IF we don’t jump in to ‘cocoon’ our wee ones from the get go. What I am advocating, instead, is we stop this gone-overboard PCness when it comes to “prevention” of physical and/or verbal attacks — please, can’t we let our wee ones learn, first hand, the consequences of their actions before they become ‘grown’?
I do not know the circumstances of the gun-firer and I am not making any excuses for the incredible pain caused by the 25-yo’s now-irrevocable decision to shoot at another human being, but I will tell you this: In my many years, I’ve heard yada, yada, yada about not physically or verbally attacking others –I’ve even done my fair share of yada, yada, yada-ing at folks on the subject — unfortunately, they are nothing but words; meaningless IF there is nothing by which the individual can personally relate to the message.
As for myself, to this day, I can still distinctly feel the consequences of one of my forays into the dark side: the ghost-pain in my left upper arm where a 1st-grade classmate, Gail, smacked me after I’d hit her shoulder and called her a “brat” for something she’d done (can’t even remember what it was, now…) That she pronounced me “selfish” while returning the turn-about-is-fair-play favor, only added insult to injury. IMHO, in today’s overly-PC climate, I never would have gotten that invaluable lesson; the lesson that finally made NOT [intentionally] hurting others, EVER!, ‘stick’. I have tried my darndest to live life accordingly since then — I do wish today’s chickadees were allowed the same opportunity to learn that fundamental lesson, one that has stood me in such good stead. /rant
{{{♥TCW♥}}} beth.
I totally agree with you,Beth. We should allow innocent civilians from Iraq the pleasure of dropping the MOAB(mother of all bombs) on the dumbass dubya/Dick Cheney compounds from about 10,000 miles away, just so they are in no danger themselves while killing a trumped up enemy. If the smart bombs miss and kill civilians, well that happens in wartime.
a life lost.
a gift stolen.
a mother’s tears.
a gentle touch
a sad farewell.
I am sending you strength and peace.
There is nothing that will ease the pain but time and the comfort of those who care.
Sending comfort to you and all the children who are hurting. Let the memories of Littleman lighten your burden and keep his spirit alive in all of you.
I didn’t know that Sarah Palin was involved in the canned food industry….
And speaking of Ms. Palin, take a look at the comment section from a Palin endorsement article in the Boston Herald–some are pure comic gold:

Great comments section – you are so right, omg. I especially liked the one where someone said he’d hoped for a Trump/Palin ticket – the “You’re Fired/I Quit” ticket. 🙂
Oy, vey!
That’s just Wrong in so many ways…
Somebody’s bound to end up on Santa’s Naughty List for this.
Run! Run! Rudolph!!!
Yes, Rudolph, run! Alaska needs a new governor!
I guess technically the name is correct. But that Reindeer is pretty deep on the ingredient list. I prefer moose in chilli anyway. Happy Holidays mud pups.
Well, you have to understand that “ground reindeer” is there to differentiate from “flying reindeer.”
Once on a cold winter evening I was up on the Matanuska River – you know the spot where the Chickaloon comes in from that steep canyon on the right, and then Carbon Creek comes cascading down from the left? Just me and Quackers – me with snowshoes on and him with his big yellow feets. Walking on the snow on the frozen river. Half-moon behind some thin clouds. I caught on a swirl of wind the scent of something cooking and we headed that way. Pretty soon we saw in the distance a campfire. And who do you suppose was gathered around that campfire? Maybe fifteen or twenty ground reindeer.
Those reindeer were busily chopping up celery, dicing onions, roasting and peeling Anaheim chiles, and one was rummaging through a box of little glass jars looking for the coriander. They had a big pot over the fire, and they would add this or that and stir with a big wooden spoon, let it simmer a while, taste, add something else. This being Alaska – and me not carrying a firearm, they are understandably sensitive about that – they of course invited us to join them. Of course Quackers makes friends easily and it was a great dinner.
Those ground reindeer sure do make good chile. But they like the kind of hot chocolate that has those little marshmallows in it, and I like mine without.
.
Well, who wants those little marshmallows anyway?
They’re just roadkill snowman.
Thanks for clearing that up, slipstream. Of course one must differentiate ground reindeer from the flying kind, especially in December. Roasted Anaheim chiles!!
