Open Thread – Pretty Girl

If you’re planning on wintering over in Anchorage like this beautiful female mallard duck at Cuddy Park in midtown, it definitely pays to have a really good down coat. And stylish never hurt, either.

Benlomond 2——This one made my day. We “older” women know how to take care of ourselves.
Recently I was hit from behind at a traffic stop. And I got out and had a few words with the woman driving the truck that slammed into the back bummer of my van. She said she thought I was turning.
I informed her—–Yes—I am going to turn when the light turns GREEN!!!!! And if you will look, the light is now RED and there is oncoming traffic coming from the East. She then said she would be more careful—and I told her that would be a good idea!.

friend of mine posted this on FB,and I just had to share…. with mike in mind 🙂

    Story from a Kansas State
    Highway Patrol officer :

I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding
on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS.
… I asked for her driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.
The lady took out the required information and handed it to me.
In with the cards I was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age)
to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and ask if
she had a weapon in her possession at this time.

She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box.
Something—body language, or the way she said it—made me want
to ask if she had any other firearms. She did admit to also having
a 9mm Glock in her center console. Now I had to ask one more
time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have
just one more, a .38 special in her purse. I then asked her what
    was she so afraid of.

She looked me right in the eye and said, “Not a f*******g thing!”

It is official. There is a newly recognized species of invasive, feathered fauna-appropriately named the Ubiquitous Foot-In-Mouth Conservative Grouse. Although this bird is rather ordinary in looks,it more than makes up for that oversight with exceptionally loud grousing about every subject known to Mankind. This obnoxious critter is native to all 57 states and has a noisy opinion about everything. When encountered, this bird gets in your face and starts squawking non-stop. Do your best to ignore its plaintive wails and never, under any circumstances, agree with it. Ignore it long enough and it will seek out a new victim. As Kelly Bundy once so eloquently observed,”to be forewarned is to have four arms.” Carry on.

There’s a flock of mallards that overwinter near 68th and Lake Otis Parkway, too – I’ve often wondered how they manage, but there must be open leads in the bogs there.

Those ducks over there amaze me with their hardiness. I have pictures of them from last year, all huddled together when it was really cold. They reminded me of those penguins in Antarctica.

    • What is the current feeding tactic regarding the ducks? It used to be that Fish and Game folks discouraged feeding, then they were encouraging feeding of the ones who winter over, then I heard they might be discouraging it because it encouraged more ducks to stay. Does anyone know?

Opps! Perry was knocking the gays to serve openly in the military. Think there is another debate here in Iowa tonight. It is to be held at Drake University. O’Rielly made a comment that this was directed to the conservitives on the right. O’Rielly was there to sell his book on Lincoln, which I heard has a lot of errors on the history of the man. Faux news just can’t get anything right!

    • Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

Billo’s book about Lincoln is pure unmitigated junk so far as I have seen in the review-o-sphere.

He didn’t just get some of his facts wrong, he got nearly everything wrong.

Billo is weapons grade stupid. He can’t understand why there are tides. Thus he is ideal for the Faux News stable of journalists without a clue.

  8. Lacy Lady says:

Watched Jay Leno last night. Bill O’Rielly was his guest. Jay asked what the H@@@ is that ad that Perry is putting out—–War on religion. Knocked in gay in the Millitary. Jay said that one really P@@@@ him off. Glad Jay is beginning to see the light! For awhile , he didn’t know which side of the fence to stand on.

    Wait!
Cuddy Park? How do we know that?
Looks like a sidewalk this purdy duck is sitting on.
I’m not sure if Cuddy park has sidewalks. Clearly I’m not familiar with Anch, but frankly this duck is sidewalk sitting in Alaska’s largest city.

Where is the bartender/mayor of Anchorage? He has a problem brewing. Over wintering birds are sidewalk sitting!

  10. Bob Benner says:

Cuddy park would not even exist had not the Cuddy family donated 9.5 acres of land and provided funding for park amenities… Those gosh darn one percenters and wall street bankers strike again…

    • AKMuckraker says:

It also wouldn’t exist without my dear and wonderful friend Helen Neinhueser who struggled for years to get the park. She’s no one percenter, but it never would have happened without her blood sweat and tears. Thanks to everyone who contributed together to make one of my favorite parks.

    • AK Raven says:

There is a large group of wealthy folks who believe in improving the life in their community/country for those who work to make a living and have contributed to their great wealth. The Kennedys, Ted Turner, Warren Buffet and the group of wealthy who say they are not taxed fairly/enough in the US and Germany are a few high profile names. They understand that the 99% having more disposable income allows for purchases that fuel their companies and the fosters the health and welfare of our economy.
The Republicans in congress and the super wealthy that support them and their dribble have had one goal since Obama was elected. That is to make him fail. They have fought against every initiative he has supported- even ones that they came up with before he was elected. They have not allowed his nominees to come up for a vote. There has never before been this kind of partisanship. It is based on the Republican party’s base’s hatred of Obama and the color of his skin. That is the bottom line. It would not be so easy for the wealthy to control the rhetoric if Obama wasn’t black.
If you want to see the healthy economy and surplus that Clinton left our country in, then fight for and vote for Democratic candidates. Kick the repulsive Republicans out on their “I’m not a racist” butts.

  11. Ben in SF says:

Is it legal for ducks to sit on the sidewalk? Will the ACLU come to her defense?

    • mike from iowa says:

If it is,it won’t be for long. Feathered domestic fowl love sidewalks in cold weather because the cement holds heat for awhile. Unfortunately, these foul fowl don’t bother to move to use the facilities and your sidewalk turns a real pretty green color. That stuff on your shoes does wonders in your vehicle with the heater going.

    • AKMuckraker says:

Ha! Almost did a coffee spit! 🙂 I think Sullivan’s answer would be “Dissident a l’Orange.”

  12. mike from iowa says:

Texas guv Perry doesn’t know how many Supreme Court Justices sit on the bench and apparently doesn’t recognize rwnj judicial activism when it favors him. He knows liberal judicial activism when he sees it,though. Someone called him a Mimbo-a male version of a Bimbo. In ki-swahili that would probably be Mbimbo, Mbogo is the k-s word for buffalo or bull-the stuff that sallies forth from Perry’s mouth at regular intervals. Ducks are better at predicting weather than most meteorologists and when things get tough she will either hit the road, tuck her head under her wing and patiently wait it out or let some animal lover take her into a nice warm building until Spring.

  13. GoI3ig says:

Someone didn’t get the memo. It’s time to head south silly duck.

    • slipstream says:

Not just “south.” Be more specific.

Jamaica, lounger next to the pool, one of those drinks with the little umbrella. Ducks know how to do winter right.
