Open Thread – Brian on the Capitol Steps!

Brian the moose was lucky enough to attend a fabulous performance of The Capitol Steps at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday. He enjoyed it immensely. But the best part was getting to meet long-time Mudflatter and Palin impersonator extraordinaire, Bari Biern (right) and new Mudflatter in the cast Janet Gordon (left).

When “Palin” entered stage right in her red blazer, and started off by saying, “I may not be your governor any more…” she never got to finish the sentence, because just that much brought down the house with thunderous applause and hooting.

“Laugh all you want,” she went on, “because there are plenty of people who want me to be President.” [Booing from the audience] “Most of them are Democrats.” [More laughter and cheering]

It did a heart good.

Do catch a performance if you have the opportunity. This is the second one I’ve seen, and I can’t recommend it enough.

    Oh, good grief!

The Republicans just can’t get out of their own way, and the GOP clown car keeps spitting out a new idiot in each place it visits.

It looks like Rick Santorum will win Missouri and Minnesota by large margins and is leading Colorado by huge numbers (although only a small percentage of results are in and I don’t think Denver is included).

What a great contrast with the Democratic campaign of 2008 where there were two qualified, popular candidates who were battling it out in a close race. This year it’s a matter of who they hate the least this particular week.

Although I still fear the rigged voting machines, voter disenfranchisement efforts, and GOP win-at-all-costs attitude, I am feeling more and more optimistic about President’s chances of reelection all the time.

Apologies if this is a repost. Thank goodness I was sipping ginger tea while reading. It helped with the nausea.

*****she wanted to run very badly against President Obama’s failed leadership – it was so apparent. She really wanted to, but in the end she didn’t. She didn’t, because she put her special little baby, her children, and her husband first in her life. And this is such a rare, kind of a very visible example of somebody putting their family first in their lives and courageously speaking out about it. And that’s why she’s the Woman of the Year. ****

I will bet anything that this didn’t just organically happen and that it was somehow, someway put into play by the Palin camp or handlers. They’re going to try to build a fantasy story out of this and hope that it takes hold. Her next book will probably be , ” How I Chose Family First Over First Family ” , or some such gagging spew.

Ok, my retching has stopped!! It took a bit after reading that!!

What a bunch of moose dung. It would be ever so good if she put her family first given all the issues her kids have and the love and attention her youngest needs.

I am just thrilled that she is getting less and less media coverage. I wonder when her contract with Faux News is up, doubt it will be renewed!

    • beth. says:

At what point does a “special little baby” become a toddler or a young child? I’d always measured “little baby” (special or otherwise) as a wee one you could cradle in one arm, a baby as a chickadee bigger than “little” but not yet walking, and a toddler, obviously, one toddlling about. I’ve probably been wrong all these years because apparently a nearly-4-yo is now considered a “little baby.” I must be getting old. beth.

    • Diane says:

So it was OK to run for VP with a 74 year old man when she had a 6 month old special needs baby, an unwed pregnant teen age daughter, an 8 year old and 2 other children that had drinking and substance abuse issues?
      That was OK?
But because she didn’t have a chance against a sitting POTUS she gets an award?
She didn’t run, because she was such a failure on her bus tour.
This BS that she’s flinging now is because Game Change will be shown shortly and people will see how unprepared and how unstable she really is !

It’s a right wing speech site.. got a chuckle from their comment about how Luce took FDR to task because “he lied us into WWII “… Yup, those Jap planes and sinking battleships were just a figment of the goverment’s imagination !!! I’ll relay that to my HS buddie that his dad sank the Arizona all by himself….
Can’t wait to see them tell us Nixon won the war in Vietnam, and Ray-gun personally knocked down the Berlin wall with a mighty sledghammer in his own hands,,, twits !

      • beth. says:

I was struck by the “he lied us into WWII” rewrite of history, too, bl2. Dumbstruck. beth.

Does anyone have any idea why any parent would murder innocent children for any reason whatsoever? I am having a tough time with the recent murder/suicide of young brothers by their father. Like large parts of our world, this is unfathomable.

Brian looks star struck! What fun!

I have a cast-autographed show poster from their appearance in Pittsburg, KS back in the 1990’s. Bari’s signature is right there! Our younger daughter was in hospital, so I couldn’t go. But our son got the autographs for me.

The poster is one of my prized possessions!

  6. UgaVic says:

Just heard Karen Handel (sp?) resigned from Komen Foundation, due to the flap with PP!!
Wonder if they gave her a ‘golden parachute’?

    • CO almost native says:

Probably. They already are paying settlements to the four in management that resigned over the cut in funds to Planned Parenthood. I hope those four stuck it to SGK.

    • You mean with all that money that people donated thinking they were helping find a cure for breast cancer? I read her statement and she’s full of regret but there was no apology there. She also says that the discussion at Komen was already underway when she was hired on. So that tells us that their agenda to politicize women’s health has been going on for quite a while.

She may be gone, but the rest of them are still there. The board members signed off on the “new” plan without any dissent, apparently. What a disgusting organization.

      • Oops, we posted at the same time. I don’t have a problem with Komen having to pay those who quit out of protest. But money for Handel? She shouldn’t get anything beyond her salary for the actual time she was there – to get more is just stealing from those who need help.

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Nah, she got a pink one.

Good riddance Handel – your bitchy letter of resignation just cements your fake righteousness in my eyes. You didn’t help your organization by leaving and insisting you were right and everyone else was wrong. This is far from over – it’s just the beginning. Komen will never recover from your blunder and women will not forgive. Not this time.

      • leenie17 says:

With all of the information coming to light about the foundation’s questionable right-wing-leaning policies and the enormous percentage of money going to ‘administrative costs’, I suspect that SGK’s existence is running on borrowed time.

“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” she said in a letter to Brinker, dated Feb. 7.

“I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”

      LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!

You’re just another Fundie for the Lure. Grifting is going to be more difficult now, so I would recommend that you call the Wig Weasel in Wasilla for some true under the radar grifting strategy.

    • mike from iowa says:

Handel herself has said she doesn’t want a severance package. She also doesn’t want any blame for this fiasco. Vigilance always, troops. Now carry on.

    • Lacy Lady says:

Now if could only get the Catholic Bishops to apoligize to the Catholic women for their war on women’s rights. They don’t have to worry about getting pregnant. Nor do they have to worry about the caring for a dozen children——food, clothing, education and medical bills.
I don’t see them complaining about men’s health care.

  7. UgaVic says:

Thanks for the giggle this morning. From all I can see on the Internet the Capital Steps IN Anchorage is sold out.
If someone there knows something different …tips please on getting tickets.!!

  8. thatcrowwoman says:

Dear mudflatters, please do something for me.
Check your smoke detector(s), and if you don’t have any, or know somebody who doesn’t have any, make it a priority to get one that works.

Today our school district mourns the death of two young sisters trapped in a housefire. Rest in peace, little ones, and peace to all who mourn.

((thatcrowwoman)) and prayers to the family that lost their precious ones.

    • leenie17 says:

A cousin of mine is a teacher in Philadelphia. Last year they also lost a family whose children were students in his school. He started a campaign to collect new detectors for families in the district who had none. Some of the local stores donated detectors and the local fire department got involved as well (his sister is a volunteer). Many people from outside the area (including myself and my sister) sent gift cards for stores like Home Depot and Lowes so that detectors could be purchased. Who knows how many lives the hundreds of detectors he was able to distribute may save?

So sorry to hear about this needless tragedy. No person, especially a child, should ever die for the lack of a smoke detector. My thoughts and prayers to the family and those who are mourning the terrible loss.

      • psminidivapa says:

I’m so sorry, TCW! Our school lost 3 middle school girls (at a sleepover), along with one girl’s mom, grandmom and infant niece in same circumstances several years ago. Living in small rural community – everyone is related to everyone else – it still sends shudders. No working smoke detectors on second floor, smoke rises, fire started on second floor, family thought they were protected by smoke detector in kitchen….as well as making sure there ARE smoke detectors, one must assure they all work and are distributed around the house. (Also, from my sis who used to be a Red Cross PR person: make sure you PRACTICE fire drills at home!)

Virtual hugs to you and all at your community.

      • thatcrowwoman says:

Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts. There was faulty wiring and no smoke detector in the rental home. I had been holding myself together until I saw the paper when I got to work; the photo of their Christmas bicycles in the charred rubble of the front porch and a memorial of tiny teddy bears and flowers in the front yard just broke my heart. So many losses in our community this school year…

A smoke detector/home fire drill campaign is a really good idea; I’m going to ask our union locals, fire departments, and student governments to come together to do the same in memory of the little ones.
We get knocked down, we get back up again.
        We must.
        Together, we shall.

        much love,

Used to see the Capitol Steps on Iowa Public Broadcasting, along with Mark Russell and they are/were hilarious. Brtan looks gaunt, like maybe the “RUT” has him worn out. Does he have a mailing address? I would like to send some nice green alfalfa and good, high protein Iowa corn to fatten hisself up. I’d send willow shoots, but the Quitter would sue me for threatening her daughter.
