Open Thread – The Winner

Congratulations to Dallas Seavey, winner of Iditarod XL. Seavey is a third generation Iditarod musher, and the youngest person ever to win the race. He made the journey in 9 days, 4 hours, 29 minutes, 26 seconds, the seventh-fastest time recorded on the race’s northern route. Second place finisher Aliy Zirkle had the eighth-fastest time.

Back in ‘ought-12, when the snow was so deep that sunrise came an hour later, when it is was so cold for so long the bears didn’t come out ’til July 4, Dallas Seavey won the Iditarod, … the first time. Dan’s buttons must be popping off his suspenders.

Congratulations to Dallas, Aliy and all the mushers and dogs who finished. And safe journey to those still out on the trail.

Of the only two mushers I’ve met, Jeff King had to scratch but Mike Santos is still going, holding on to 34th place. He’s been in the mid 30s the whole time, which seems to me to be pretty darn good for his first Iditarod!

My..sturdy elkhide..custom muzzle..is ..attached. Immensly enjoyed a comment by Zirkle..as to the “P’s and Q’s”. Am awaiting the ..letting the confetti ..settle..and the tributes falling where they are being directed. Two months..four? There will be delicate evaluations, suggestions..and I am guessing..some..rule-clarifications. THAT..is what I..as a teacher and Elder..am waiting for. (Indeed..for those who ..’wonder’..at the mention of ..muzzle in place..think..her mind and senses..flowing like a childhood story..of butter being formed..as tigers join in flying circles….) That clothing accutromo (sp?)..is what..limited ..this..honestly!

MUYS I am lost in moderation on RGK blog please leave a comment for Joseph that I could feed dogs for him at home on Fri, Sat, Sun if he wants or needs to stay in Nome. He will need to let me know via the comment section. Tell him it is Laurie C. He doesn’t know the LMD handle.

So awesome to have three generations of Seavys in this race. And Allie. You are so special. Congratulations to all who try and to all who finish. Mushers and dogs rock.

  6. Zyxomma says:

Blessings to all the dogs and mushers, and everyone who kept track. Health and peace.

Congratulations to all who took part in this amazing race!

Now for an open-thread post about a situation that has been long in coming: Ann Coulter, that defender of Sarah Palin has just dissed her! While I can’t usual stomach listening to Coulter I did enjoy her this time:

    http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/14/coulter-on-palin-brokered-convention-gop-has-a-problem-with-con-men-and-charlatans/

Interesting too is that this was highlighted on The Daily Caller which is a far right site that also usually defends Mrs. Palin

    Sarah Palin, you are toast.

I have to put in NH’s two cents worth and say that the second place finisher Aliy Zirkle was born and raised in NH so the local news has been following the race more closely this year than most years. I also have to say that due to lack of snow in these parts a couple of dog sled races, one in predicular a national championship competition that is held in Laconia, had to be cancelled. We’ve had an extremely warm winter and zip for snow. Our luck we will have a blizzard in mid April just to keep everyone on their toes.

Congratulations to Mr Seavey! Ms Zirkle !
I’m excited this morning to see young rural musher Pete Kaiser came in 5th and Mike Williams, Jr, running for his dad this year, came in 8th.
We have a new generation to be proud of .
    John Baker came in 9th.
10th and 11th look to be going to 2 wonderful women- Ms Jonrowe and Ms Ekran. We’ll know which way round soon.
Most congratulations and hurrahs belong with the puppers though. Go puppers!

WOW! What a race! Although I was pulling for Aliy, I’m happy for the young man. Guess I can put my autographed picture of her away until next year, and cheer her on again.

Does Hobo Jim still sing his Iditerod Trail Song as the mushers cross the finish line? I credit myself with helping a friend get through the wind, snow and tractor-trailers on I-40 a couple of years back by singing her that song. We were attending a quilting event in Pigeon Forge and because of weather, they shut down US 441 in and out of the Great Smokies and we had to get on I-40 to get back home. Anyone who travels that highway around Asheville will know what I mean!

    On to March madness!

Outstanding job, Dallas Seavey! We are proud of you!

It’s nice to have his young efforts put Alaska in the national news in an outstanding way for a change!

    l’dor v’dor
    from generation to generation

How many of us have the vicarious glow from sharing in this race across the frozen North?
That glow is not just a fever dream induced by unseasonably warm weather here on the Gulf of Mexico; it’s a sweet winter dream of good dogs and wind in my face and starlight on snow, set my compass North.
