Open Thread – Brenda!

It’s been a long, snowy, mooseless winter. Our hooved friends all headed for lower elevations where navigation was easier and roads were more plentiful. But all that’s over now, and we’re starting to see the reappearance of moose up here at Mudflats Central.

I stood out on the porch taking pictures of a beautiful girl in the driveway, and she seemed just as interested in me as I was in her. It was sunset, and she walked right up to the door, bathed in a beautiful orange glow. Look at those ears! Right after I snapped this shot I decided I’d probably better shut the door, but she must have felt the same way, and turned around and trotted off into the brush.

I’d like to think she’s one of the twins from a couple years back – right age, right gender. You never know!

Those of you on the west coast and as far south as TX will be able to do what I can’t — watch the solar eclipse live:

    I’ll settle for photos/video.

Friends of ours in northern Michigan (near Cheboygan) had a bear on their deck a couple of nights ago. He/she raided the bird feeder and moved a heavy wooden settee either to get closer to the bird feeder or to get a better view of the night sky through the trees. If he/she did stop to rest a bit sitting on the deck, it’s a good thing that he/she did not decide to open the sliding doors and try the beds.

Can I send a couple of racoons to anyone ?? My annual battle to keep them outta the garage has begun in earnest last nite…. 30 lb ,if it’s an ounce, racoon climbing up the garage wall, over my fishing rods and into the rafters…cats pffting away and ole Ben prodding the dang thing with a broom stick to get it outta the rafters and out of his last refuge ( women have taken over every room in the house! ) , gave up, opened the big garage door and 1/2 hr later the varmint was gone…. or so I thought until this am, when I went out back for my morning coffee, and lo and behold, not one , but TWO of the plump bandit faced rascals trying to stare me down!!! bounced a tennis ball just in front of one, and they both scrambled over the wood pile and outta the yard… It’s a jungle out there, I tell ya ! animals everywhere!! oh…… that’s right, I live in a rural forest area ,,, a-hem.. just send me your address , and I’ll send you a LIVE Davy Crockett coonskin hat, complete with original owner inside of it.. I’ll even ship it for free!

Sorry, benny, but I’ve got Big Momma Raccoon in the attic, with what appears to be her second litter this season. The whole forest to live in, but noooooo. Party in the attic! Big Momma’s too shrewd to go for anything we’ve baited the live traps with, and something has eaten all the goldfish from the pond, also, too. I’m going in after ’em if they haven’t moved out by Memorial Day. I really hope I don’t have to do that!!!

On a happier note, littlebird graduated from college last weekend.
      Best. Mother’s Day gift. Ever.
She’s staying in Mississippi, taking a year or 2 off before grad school, volunteering for President Obama’s reelection campaign, working for the chocolate shop, and doing some free-lance reporting/writing while she searches for a full-time “big girl” job.

2 more weeks of school for me.
      I think I can.
      I think I can.

Wishing you a fabulous Friday from the forest,

Counting the days till school is out for you, because I know you will be too busy to do so. Our schools were finished yesterday. No snow days! Such a strange thing.

Re raccoons..try buying some bobcat/couger urine from a trapping online shop. Put in a kerr jar with holes in the top..and see if they feel uneasy. Can work..not always.

indeed she has BufGal. she had a marvelous life. she gave so much pleasure to so many people. May she Rest in Peace.
the best accolade a New Yorker can give to another is to say that a person was “a class act” and so she was.

Gorgeous ! I love the thought it might be one of the twins. Welcome back !

    What a magnificent animal!
We have a couple of rather large rabbits that come out about 4;30 and play on the neighborhood lawns. They are large enough that our cats will not bother them and they seem unafraid of humans, one watched me put in tomato plants, not 5 feet from where I was digging.
I love Spring and the return of birds and our other friends.

  9. COalmostNative says:

Aww! So cute… from a reasonable distance 😉

    She is lovely!

Our Orson (or a cousin) the Great Horned Owl, stopped by for a visit about 2:30 this morning. We have had no owls for almost a year because of the storm last June. I had to go to the garage freezer for the stash of individually wrapped chicken livers to thaw him one. The deck is new, but I guess it worked, because the chicken liver is gone, and there is an owl sitting in the Grandfather Oak right now looking rather smug. These fellers can live over 20 years, so I do hope it is “our” Orson. Naptime for me!

I saw this headline and I ran over here as fast as I could to see. The 10 seconds it took for the page to load seemed like an eternity! (damned laptop).

    She’s just perfect.

it must have been hard not go close and give her a big welcome home hug. i guess that might not be good thing though maybe if you had a nice, fat juicy carrot…..
